Product Features
Based on where the product will be located, its function and, accordingly, appearance (material, color, shape and knitting technique) will depend. Most yarn rugs are made by crocheting, but sometimes knitting may be used.
An economical but very beautiful way to update your interior
When knitting a carpet, the features of the interior are taken into account. The product will be a bright accent that should harmoniously fit into the overall style of the room.
pros
It’s not difficult to make rugs from yarn yourself, and most importantly, it’s very economical. So, for example, for a rug in a medium-sized bathroom you will need only 2-3 skeins of thread. Even if you compare the price of new yarn and a finished rug in a store, the difference will be significant.
Experienced craftswomen create real wicker masterpieces. But even if you don’t have the skill, you can make rugs from leftover yarn with your own hands, following the pattern exactly. Such a product will always be exclusively designer, since the choice of colors and material for its manufacture remains with the craftswoman.
And finally, this is a pleasant activity that will help you relieve stress, relax, and during it you can enjoy listening to your favorite music or watching a movie.

Types of carpets made of yarn
The choice of shapes and types of carpets is large, this allows you to choose a product for any part of the house. Needlewomen use a wide variety of materials and expensive wool, and even plastic bags of different colors.
This carpet will be a bright accent in any interior.
The advantage of wool products is their hygroscopicity, warmth and softness . The wool of sheep, goats and camels is used. Carpets made from such yarn will be more expensive and will lose their appearance due to frequent washing.
The yarn can be a combination of synthetic fibers and wool. This product will withstand regular washing and is durable. Rugs made from knitted yarn are light and delicate. They can be placed in any corner of the house, except the bathroom.
For warm feet in the children's room
Carpets are also made from tape yarn. To do this, use ribbons from old knitted items, which are sewn or tied together. There is also a special tape yarn, it is thicker than usual.
There are jute carpets, they have good durability. But their huge disadvantage is that when wet, the weight increases 4 times and it needs to be dried only in a horizontal position, and often turned over.
Drying jute carpets is not very convenient
There are carpets made from polyester cord. They are ideal for slippery floors such as tiles. In addition, they are not afraid of moisture.
If you still have a strong desire to place a carpet in the bathroom, then there are durable products made from plastic bags. They are also cut into small ribbons and tied or iron-glued together.

What materials can the rug be made from?
The most important element that you need to decide on before starting work is the yarn. The most popular option in this case is wool yarn. However, its choice is large; it is made from various materials: cotton, acrylic and many others.
It was described above that clothesline and tape ropes, plaits, twines and synthetic cords can act as yarn.
If knitting a rug does not fit into your planned expenses, then you can make a rug from old clothes.
As for the location of the rug, a linen cord would be an ideal option for a bathtub. To make rugs that act as covers for chairs, it is necessary to use materials that will not harm human skin.
Cotton rugs can withstand loads and do not deform.
Form
Carpets can be whole or knitted from individual motifs. A solid canvas is easier to make, but a product made from motifs will look much more impressive. The edges of the carpets are treated with openwork edging.
Handmade Knitting Yarn
Rugs can be successfully integrated into the interior, thanks to the variety of shapes. The forms are as follows:
- rectangular;
- square;
- oval;
- round;
- asymmetrical;
- curly (in the shape of a star, flower, snowflake, animal, etc.).
Select the shape to match the overall style of the interior
Advice To ensure warmth on the floor, choose dense products, and more delicate ones for beauty.
To prevent square carpets from seeming too simple, they are made by connecting several squares of different colors together.
Oval yarn rugs are suitable for longer rooms. They can be placed in the living room in the relaxation area. Small rugs in the shape of an oval or semicircle can be placed near an armchair, interior doors or near the stairs to the second floor, if available.

Master class on making pompoms
Every self-respecting craftswoman tries to decorate her product after it is made. The easiest way to disguise knots and other defects in work is with fluffy pompoms; there are several ways to make them:
- classic - the thread is wound on disks, cut along the edges and tied in the center, the advantages of this method are that the pompom is voluminous, the disadvantages are that it takes a long time to wind the thread in this way;
- fork - used in the manufacture of a large number of pompoms, here the yarn is wrapped around the teeth of a fork or a similar device made independently, also cut on the side and tied with an additional thread in the middle;
- rectangular - the easiest and fastest way, for which a toilet paper roll works perfectly. It needs to be folded in half, one thread should be pulled lengthwise to secure it, and the rest should be wound along the entire length of the sleeve.
Pompom carpets
To create a pom pom rug you also need yarn. Wool is best. Small pompoms are made from it, which are connected tightly next to each other on a mesh.
The good thing about pompom rugs is that they can come in a variety of sizes, shapes and colors.
The product can be placed in any room except the bathroom. A large rug can be placed in a nursery using bright colors. For a children's room, it is better to make pom-poms of medium size so that they serve as a soft bedding for babies, because they often play on the floor. And so, parents will not worry that the child will catch a cold. You can also make the carpet high; for this you need to combine several rows of soft balls with each other.
In the living room or bedroom, it is better to choose shades that will be combined with other interior details. Even small rugs will look good both in the hallway and in the bedroom.

Rug made from old things
This option is suitable for people who have a lot of old clothes that have nowhere to go. It’s a shame to throw them away, but this way you can breathe a second life into them. Almost any clothing is suitable for knitting a rug: T-shirts, wool, towels, sweaters, leather belts and tights.
Before you start knitting, old things need to be prepared. To do this, they need to be cut to make one long strip, this will be the yarn. After this, the yarn must be collected into a ball, now you can start knitting.
Using knitting yarn
Yarn is a universal material for creativity . Knitted yarn will stretch well during knitting, but at the same time ideally holds the shape of the finished product. It does not fade and is reasonably priced. A creation made from such yarn will look rich.
Products made from tape yarn will not turn out flat, unlike ordinary threads. It will look voluminous, airy and even lush.
Knitted yarn has good stretch
The product will be durable, the color will remain the same and will not fade, it will serve until the owners get tired of it.
Disadvantages that are important to consider
Choosing the right material plays a big role in making a rug. Each type of thread can behave differently when in contact with water. Therefore, when purchasing yarn for knitting in a store, you should consult with the seller about this. A product made from old rags that have survived more than one wash is not so susceptible to deformation.
The disadvantages include the loss of time, because it is much easier to go and buy a ready-made rug in a store. But it will no longer have individuality and will become an ordinary item in the interior.
Selecting a location
The product can be placed in any room and part of an apartment or house. For example:
- Children's room . Works in the form of animals, cartoon characters, or bright models from individual motifs are suitable. You can lay one large carpet or several medium ones for each area in the room (near the bed, desk, in the play area). Children can play on the floor while sitting; to avoid the cold, you can choose a carpet made of pompoms. It is dense, soft, and retains heat well.
Carpet in the nursery for the play area
- Hallway . Products need to be purchased durable, made from thick synthetic, composite yarn, polyester cord or plastic bags. Products made from other materials will not last long in the hallway.
- Bathroom and toilet . Products must have the same qualities as for the hallway. You just need to take into account that there will be high humidity in the room, and the material must be resistant to it. In addition, it should not slip.
- Bedroom and living room . Large openwork yarn carpets will become the main decoration of the room. Products can be laid on linoleum, parquet, laminate and even tiles. They can be placed in the middle of the room or closer to the sofa or bed.
In the living room, such products will be the main decoration
Round option
For knitting, use the circle pattern:
- From one loop, 6 air ones are knitted, which are tied in half-columns;
- The lift is done with an air loop.
Creating a circle follows the pattern with double crochets:
- In the first row, two double crochets are knitted from each loop;
- Divide the circle into six segments;
- At the end of each part you need to add a double crochet.
Work according to this plan is carried out to the required size of the rug.
Crocheting a rug for beginners using this pattern is not difficult. The main thing is to first choose the right material and the right color scheme.
Using the product in the interior
The attractiveness of yarn products lies in their beauty and uniqueness. Most of the products are handmade, which can complement any interior.
They will look appropriate anywhere
Shabby chic
The products will fit well into a shabby chic style room. This is a combination of romanticism and elegance. A knitted product will help create coziness. It is necessary to choose a not bright, calm color, perhaps with a small pattern or floral design. Use beige, white, light blue colors. Typically, these colors are rarely used when knitting carpets, but for shabby chic they are a good option.
Openwork knitting will fit well . It can be the same shade, or better if it is the same knit with a blanket, pillow cover, furniture, or table napkin. The carpet can have patterns or weaves.
Most often, calmer colors are used for this style.
Modern style
Many modern crocheted rugs are made in neutral colors. For example, gray, dark gray, cream. But, based on trends, knitted items can be bright.
A rectangular cream rug woven from wool will look good on a dark floor. It will go well with other elements of the same shade in the room.
A rectangular gray rug can be placed in a minimalist interior . A large chocolate-colored rug will help visually add space and arouse the interest of guests.
It is better to shade light floors with carpets made of dark yarn
If there are animals in the house, then a small rug can be allocated for the pet. As a sleeping place.
Classic
For a large room in a classic style, oval or round shaped products are suitable. If the room is small, choose a rectangular shape.
If a small living room has plain wallpaper, then you can visually expand the room with the help of this work. Select a product with narrow stripes of a dark color.
Oval-shaped carpets are well suited for a classic style.
The yarn in the living room should not contrast with the shade of the floor. The product is selected to match the floor or a similar shade. If the walls in the room are decorated in light colors, then the yarn is selected in cool shades. If the walls, on the contrary, are in dark colors, it is better to choose a product of brown color with an ornament or beige .
A good design move would be to use knitted items in the same style as the carpet. These can be various small items, baskets, napkins, curtains, tablecloths, poufs.
You can make toys or decorative pillows to match the style of the carpet
This element will help soften the straight lines of furniture and walls. By choosing the right texture, you can feel the softness and warmth of the yarn.

Popularity of home-woven rugs
Carpet weaving masters several decades ago were engaged in this type of folk art, which was passed down from older generations.
In villages, in almost every house, all generations of the family took turns sitting at the weaving loom when their hands were freed from other work. What wonderful bright flowers and patterns along the edges of the woven carpet came out of skillful hands.
In the modern world, industry offers a huge selection of factory-made products that can satisfy every taste.
But still, for creative people who know how to feel the living soul invested in simple things made with their own hands, homemade rugs are of much greater value than those made on factory machines.
The fashion for them does not go away and is revived when decorating houses in country, Scandinavian or ethnic style. Creative embodiments are not limited by conventional boundaries.
As a material for weaving, craftsmen use various types of artificial and natural yarn. A special type of weaving of decorative items from cut strips of old and unnecessary things is a do-it-yourself educational rug.
Materials and tools
- Yarn of any colors and thickness. The thicker it is, the fluffier and more voluminous the ball will come out of it.
- Yarn can be taken from any available material: wool, viscose, acrylic.
- Scissors, thread and needle.
- Material chosen for the base: mesh, fabric, foamed PVC.
- Cardboard, compass, pen or pencil.
- Crochet hook.
This is a sample list that you can vary. For example, a compass can be replaced with a bowl or plate.
Braided rugs-decorations
The only difference between the rugs of the past and those made today was their purpose. Previously, this was a thing needed in every home; in addition to creating a cozy atmosphere, it carried a functional load.
What does a wicker rug look like?
In cold weather, the use of woolen rugs protected the house from the entry of cold air from the basement. Now the need for floor insulation has disappeared. Modern floor coverings do an excellent job of this function. And so it became possible to use rugs as a decorative item.

Wicker rugs are original and interesting; they can decorate a corridor, kitchen or children's room. Such products are appropriate even in the bathroom

How to make a rug for your home using weaving?
- Cut a circle from the tarpaulin that will become the base.
- Divide it into sectors intersecting in the center. The number of sectors depends on the diameter of the base.
- At the end of each sector, make a cut and secure with twine.
- Secure the weaving thread in the center and begin laying it in even, dense rows on the base.
- Weave it with twine as you go.
- When finished weaving, fasten the thread.
- Process the edges.

How to make a pompom
There are so many ways to make pompoms! In our master class we will tell and show you only a few of them - in our opinion, the simplest and fastest to implement;)
On the fork
The method is only suitable for small pompoms, the size of a small plum.
So, we thread the yarn between the teeth of the fork, as shown in the photo:
We take the fork in our left hand and, holding the small tail of the thread with our finger, we wind the yarn with our right hand. More skeins mean a fluffier pompom.
Having wound the thread, cut it off from the ball and tie the ends, like this:
Tighten the knot well.
Remove the pompom from the fork and cut the loops of thread formed on either side of the knot, like this:
Using sharp scissors we trim the “fluffy”, forming a perfect ball.
Ready!
On rolls
Suitable for the largest possible pompoms.
We take two cardboard rolls in our left hand. We drag the thread between them and clamp it. We wind the thread onto two rolls at once, cut the thread from the skein and tie the winding together, as shown in the photo.
On the frame
Very similar to the previous version. The process is shown step by step in the photo:
Many pompoms at once
A method for the lazy :)
On "bagels"
Cut out two identical rings from cardboard. It is desirable that they be wider, that is, thicker.
We thread the tail of the thread into the hole and grab it with our finger. We wind the other end of the thread onto a “donut” in several layers, as shown in the photo below. Having finished winding, fasten the thread and cut the “donut” along the outer edge. Remove the ring and you're done!
On fingers
Dexterity and attentiveness are important here. The principle is the same as with a fork, only the pompoms end up being much larger;)
Illuminated rug
Sometimes at night you want to go to the toilet, go to the kitchen to eat, drink a glass of water or prepare a bottle of formula for the baby, so you have to get up and leave the bedroom. In the dark, and even in a half-asleep state, there is a risk of bumping into something, and turning on the overhead light is not always possible so as not to wake up other family members. For such cases, LED floor lighting in a rug will be an interesting and useful solution.
Craftswoman Johanna Hyrkas came up with the great idea of using an LED strip as a lighting sign for the way out of the bedroom. The ribbon is twisted in a spiral, located inside a round rug woven from ordinary rope, and a long tail leads further from the room. Soft, cozy light spreads across the floor without disturbing sleep.
Such a rug with LED lighting can serve as a night light in a child’s room. In addition, a strip of rug can be laid along the walls and lead to the toilet or kitchen. For such purposes, it is better to use a sealed closed LED strip. You can make a rug with your own hands, using a large crochet hook or using your fingers to braid a ribbon with thick yarn or rope. Of course, there are expensive models of LED floor lighting with a light power control. But often the homemade option is an excellent budget solution, as in this case.
Knitting a rug for beginners
For beginners who have not yet knitted complex designs, it is better to start making rugs with knitting needles in the shape of a regular square or rectangle. This basis is the basic one, to which decor in the form of fringe or braids is equally important.
Tools:
Manufacturing:
- on the knitting needle you need to cast on 58 regular loops + 2 more edge stitches;
- then there are two rapports connected according to scheme 1. it is called “putanka”;
- the structure of the braid is shown in diagram 2, after it there are 2 more repeats;
- in this way you need to knit at least 42 cm of the product;
- The fringe completes the composition and is done every other loop.
Important! DIY rectangular rugs do not always turn out neat on the knitting needles. The appearance can be spoiled by the untreated sides of the product. You can fix them by crocheting. But this is not a required step.
It would be better to have a rectangular rug next to the bed to make it more comfortable to place your feet.
