Gathered valances

Ruffled valances can be cut using both longitudinal and transverse threads. This depends on the pattern of the fabric and how many seams you intend to make.

Cutting fabric

To determine the footage, measure the width of the mattress and add two of its lengths. Increase the length by 2-3 times for shirring, depending on the thickness of the fabric. Thin, light fabrics will require more gathers, thick fabrics will require less. Measure from the top of the mattress to the floor and add 11.5cm allowance for hem and seams.

Cut along the cross thread of the fabric. Divide the total length of the valance by the width of the fabric and determine the number of necessary valance parts. Round fractional numbers. Now multiply the number of pieces by the length of the valance (from top to bottom) to determine the total amount of fabric required for the valance. Dividing this number by 100 cm, you will get the required footage.

Should you choose a sachet or a blanket?
