As you browse through our collection and enjoy the views, be sure to also pay attention to how each space presents its core.

Some design choices may not really stand out in terms of great looks, while others can dramatically improve the overall interior.

Not to mention decorating rooms that look great but adhere to the less-is-more style. When window frames open up stunning vistas, all that remains is to admire what you see.

Functionality and practicality

A large window in a room is always good. Its significant drawback can be considered high heat transfer. You should pay attention to this even before installing the window profile.

When choosing a window profile, you should consult with a professional to decide which design and material is the most reliable.

You should not save money and buy cheap materials for windows. This will lead to the apartment being blown out and moisture entering it. A large window must be secure.

Window insulation options:

  • Use of vacuum structures;
  • Using energy-saving film.

The choice of registration method will depend on the expected price. Of course, the first method is more reliable. But with proper insulation, the second one is no less effective.

DIY framed window with lighting

Despite the wide range of finished products on the market, illuminated false windows are quite expensive. If you do not have the opportunity to purchase a finished product, you can make it yourself. To do this, you will need to prepare the necessary consumables, tools, stock up on instructions and free time.

First, decide on the design and color of the picture you want to see in the room. It must be of high quality and convey clarity and realism to the image.

When choosing an image, choose a picture with perspective wisely.

To create a window in a frame with lighting you will need to prepare:

  • a picture of the required size;
  • drywall;
  • roller;
  • putty;
  • spatula and brushes;
  • acrylic paint for the frame;
  • water-based paint for the box;
  • transformers;
  • sources of light;
  • screws and dowels;
  • hammer and screwdriver.

The instructions for making a window opening consist of the following steps:

  1. Make a plasterboard box in which the lighting will be located. Its depth must be at least 20 cm.
  2. Using power tools, saw off the wooden trims to the desired size.
  3. Putty the plasterboard product, and after drying, paint it with water-based paint.
  4. Place transformers and light bulbs in the box at an angle of 45 degrees, make holes for the wires to exit.
  5. Install dowels into the drilled holes and screw the fasteners.
  6. Place the lamps and attach transformers to them. Assemble the entire system into a single unit and connect the wires.
  7. In the lower right corner of the structure, make a hole for exiting wires and installing a switch.
  8. Secure the finished structure with screws.
  9. Install wooden trims around the entire perimeter of the product and paint them.

That's the whole simple process of making a fake window. If you follow the technology of its manufacture, you can cope with such work on your own. As a result of your efforts, you will add some zest and exclusivity to the interior of the room.

Basic Rules

When decorating windows, you should remember a few important rules. There are few of them, but they are fundamental and will help you avoid serious mistakes during the work process.

  1. Choose a design that matches the overall style of the room.
  2. The type of design must correspond to the configuration features of the opening and hide the shortcomings.
  3. Choose decor that will have design and functionality.

Features of modern style

No, there will not be a detailed excursion into the interior direction. But it’s worth remembering the details inherent in modern style.

There is no separate modern style in the interior. This concept unites almost all trends in design that appeared not so long ago. And often it is eclecticism, that is, a harmonious mixture of two or three styles.

For example, country and Provence, art deco and minimalism, hi-tech and techno. And, of course, curtains should suit both styles.

All modern trends have details that unite them:

  • Simple colors: sand, gray, beige, white, black shades, milk chocolate or ivory. And if you want to add color, you can do this using green, blue, orange, purple or red.
  • Simple forms. In modern interiors you will not find carved legs, inlays, or excessive decor.
  • Free space. All furnishings play their role, and often several. An ordinary table turns into a dining table, a small sofa into a full-fledged sleeping place, etc.
  • Convenience. Things in the house are only necessary. And the owners regularly use them. That is, there are no hot-spots in the living room or any other room.
  • Practicality. Caring for furniture, belongings, and textiles does not cause any trouble for the owners. The curtains on the windows are washable and may not even be ironed, the furniture is light and mobile, the finishing materials are natural, the color scheme is universal.
  • Multi-level lighting.

Any equipment looks in its place in a modern interior. But, if the TV will hang and not stand, then you need to think about the proper design of the wall with the TV.

Such interiors look expensive and prestigious, despite their apparent simplicity.

Knowing the characteristics of the direction, it is easier to decide how to design the windows.

Zoning the living room with double-sided lighting

In the living rooms of old houses with two windows, the possibility of zoning is practically absent. A square room with a wall length of 3.5-4 m, two windows and one or two doors leaves practically no room for maneuver - only two walls are suitable for installing a sofa and armchairs, there is nowhere to put cabinet furniture and a dining table.

In rectangular rooms, zoning is possible and desirable. And in living rooms of 17 square meters. m, and in living rooms of 30 sq. It is quite possible to divide it into functional zones.

Functional areas that are usually found in the living room:

  • relaxation area with upholstered furniture;
  • dinner Zone.

Areas that may or may not exist in the living room:

  • work area – desk, computer, sewing machine;
  • kitchen;
  • children's corner for small children;
  • music corner with instruments;
  • place to install cabinets with books, dishes, collections.

It is not advisable to divide any living room with high shelves or partitions or screens. The living room should be spacious; it makes sense to cover only areas with constant clutter - work tables, stove and sink in the kitchen, desk or computer desk, handicraft corner. To do this, it is enough to use a bar counter, low shelving or a high cabinet. It makes no sense to fence off a children's corner - a small child will not play without seeing his parents.

A dining table with chairs and upholstered furniture themselves divide the living room space into separate zones.

The kitchen should be highlighted at least partially - with the help of a bar counter. The kitchen is also usually separated by the color and decoration of the walls - an apron or tiles are required near the work surfaces, sink and stove. The compartment with an arch near the ceiling, lowering the level of a stretch or plasterboard ceiling with additional lighting, imitation of a wooden beam, looks good. With the help of differences in height of suspended ceilings, you can highlight recreation areas, a dining area, and a work area.

You can put a beautiful large rug near the sofa and armchairs. It is undesirable to separate the kitchen with another floor covering; you should not use podiums - you can trip over the steps.

It is possible to use color and textured wall decoration for zoning only in very spacious living rooms. In living rooms up to 20 sq. It makes no sense to highlight functional areas with color - such division visually reduces the room, which is undesirable. It is better to highlight individual groups of furniture using lighting or carpet.

Dividing a room into zones using color and finishing material looks beautiful in rectangular living rooms with an area of 25 square meters or more. m. Usually different wallpapers are used; a combination of smooth walls with brick or tiles or textured plaster.

Curtain style

As for the curtains in the room, they are without draperies, ruffles and often without lambrequins.

Some interior trends allow the use of trendy “clothing” for windows - blinds, roller blinds made of fabric, rattan or plastic.

What curtains are suitable for this or that style?

High tech

This style is exactly “friendly” with blinds – horizontal or vertical. If the owner does not like them due to their office nature, you can hang roller blinds or Roman blinds.

The color is discreet, monochromatic. If instead of blinds and roller blinds you want something more elegant and delicate for the windows, simple curtains without a pattern made of fabric with a metallic sheen (chiffon, nylon, organza) will do.

Vintage

Vintage is tenderness and naturalness in everything. This also applies to curtains. For them you need to take natural fabrics - cotton, linen, chintz. The drawing is mostly small.

Curtains – gently falling down, without unnecessary draperies and horizontal folds.

Curtains with large eyelets or fabric ties will look good.

Light colors - beige, light green, lavender, gray-blue, tea rose, white. But the colors... If the wall decoration is made in rich colors, then the pattern on the curtains should be in muted shades. And vice versa.

Art Deco

Art Deco is both modern and deliberately expensive. This is also reflected in textiles. The curtains on the windows are made of fabric that feels expensive even to the touch - brocade, velvet, silk, linen.

If velvet is chosen, shallow draperies are acceptable.

This design of windows in the living room looks especially cozy in rooms that face the north side of the house. In winter, such rooms are even more comfortable.

The color scheme is light, it can be black and white, so even thick velvet curtains do not burden the interior of the room.

Loft

A loft is absolute space, not restrained by partitions. If we interpret it as an attic, warehouse or hangar (this is how the name is translated from English), the question arises - do these rooms even have curtains? This means that they are not needed in a modern living room.

But the desire to hide your life from prying eyes is natural, so you can hang transparent tulle on the windows, and attach Roman blinds or roller blinds to the frames themselves to match the color of the frame.

Tulle will cover the room in daylight, and curtains will cover it in darkness (during the day they will merge with the frame).

Minimalism

This direction is in tune with high-tech. On the windows there are the same blinds, fabric roller blinds, roller blinds or light curtains made of fabric with a smooth structure.

The difference between these styles is the color. In the room you can use not only white or black, but also gray, sand, coffee with milk, muted gold, light shades of green or pink, beige.

There are many variations and you can choose the shade and model of curtains that suit your living room. See photos and get inspired by ideas.

Eclecticism

This is the direction we mentioned at the beginning of the article. And it perfectly characterizes the modern style in the interior.

  • Curtains of a delicate shade with a small pattern, characteristic of a country or vintage interior, are combined with high-tech furniture.
  • Curtains made of smooth fabric are suitable for minimalism, art deco, vintage, and Mediterranean styles.
  • Velvet curtains, which are found in art deco living rooms, will fit into a minimalist or Scandinavian interior.
  • Use a trick. The fabric from which the curtains are made should be repeated in other textile elements of the room, be it the upholstery of a sofa, the upholstery of a frameless chair, a hammock or pillowcases for decorative pillows.

Sea style

Let us combine under one definition two stylistic directions of premises: Scandinavian and Mediterranean.

They have similar common features: space, natural materials, a lot of light. Except that Scandinavians try to choose shades from a warm range due to the lack of sunlight. And residents of the Adriatic and nearby countries opt for a cool spectrum of tones. And this is also reflected in window textiles.

Translucent curtains made of smooth material.

For a Scandinavian interior, coffee colors, pinkish, beige, light yellow, and golden are suitable. Try not to use dark colors - this is not typical for this style

For the Mediterranean - white, blue, violet, pistachio, olive. They will visually cool the room.

On the windows of living rooms in a marine style you can find:

  • roller blinds. Characteristic of Mediterranean interiors, as they protect from the rays of the scorching sun;
  • wooden blinds. Often found in Scandinavian living rooms. Wooden plates protect from prying eyes, but at the same time add coziness and let in light.

The common denominator in the design of living room windows in a modern style is elegant simplicity, lightness and light shades. So smooth fabric, fabric blinds or roller blinds, Roman or roller blinds will be appropriate in almost any interior.

What kind of new product is this?

It’s difficult to call interior windows a novelty. Probably every Russian has encountered them. If not in the apartment of your parents or grandparents, then in the school cafeteria there is always a window for distribution and there is a classic example of an interior window.

It turns out that the “new product” has a long history, with different explanations for its appearance. The most popular version is to reduce the consequences of household gas explosions. Having knocked out the weaker frame, the blast wave extinguishes the energy in the bathroom, leaving the windows and walls intact. The most amusing one is for ventilation, despite the fact that the windows did not open (solid). Rather, those who claim that these are skylights are right. After all, they appeared long before gas and electricity, and helped to use the bathroom and toilet during daylight hours without lighting a kerosene lamp or candles.

“New” interior windows differ from their ancestors in functions, materials, and location.

Functions

Interior windows in the interior of an apartment solve functional and decorative problems:

  • increase the luminous flux into a darkened room;
  • improve communication connections between adjacent rooms;
  • allow redevelopment without loss of performance characteristics;
  • improve air exchange inside the apartment;
  • visually expand the area of the room;
  • change the look and style of the interior, introducing new colors into it.

How to apply?

In addition to selecting the type of curtains and their material, you should also take into account the type of window being decorated. A bay window is installed in the outer portions of the walls, although such projections can be equipped with balcony doors. Such a step will significantly increase the useful area in the home and increase the illumination of the guest area.

The main tasks when designing and decorating these windows are protection from excessive sun penetration (on the southern sides of houses), retaining heat during the winter season and maintaining optimal lighting.

You'll have to use a lot of material or come up with original moves. The already mentioned Japanese and Roman curtains will be the best way out. If you wish and have good stylistic compatibility, you can use French and English varieties equipped with tiebacks and lambrequins.

According to designers, bay windows are well compatible with thread curtains of iridescent color. The cornice should be selected that coincides with the line of the wall along the entire ceiling and is secured securely, because you will need to hold two or even three layers of thick curtains.

If a single curtain is used, make sure that it moves easily and freely in two directions along the baguette line. This means that it is undesirable to use a hook or clothespin as a hanger; they will constantly cling to each other. Check whether the grip of the end tips is reliable and whether they can hold the structure suspended.

Attention: ceiling cornices, despite all their external beauty, have a significant weakness - they can only be hung properly by trained specialists with the availability of tools.

If curtains are hung with eyelets, it is preferable to use round baguettes.

But multilayer structures with lambrequins are best combined with closed baguettes. String cornices cannot be bent, and therefore they are unacceptable in bay windows. It is easiest to set the required level of curvature with a metal pipe.

A large window (panoramic type) is designed in such a way that the curtains match not only the style of the living room, but also the view outside the window. So, industrial landscapes go well with minimalism and a loft inside, and if you can see a residential building or a children's playground, then you need to choose the classics.

It is strictly unacceptable to use curtains with small patterns, since they will be visually lost in a large room.

Short strips of material and all solutions in which the pattern is directed diagonally are also incompatible with panoramic windows; this is a very uncomfortable design.

Inversion brings benefits when the curtain is made dark and the curtain is made lighter. Or a thick curtain is hung inside, in front of which a transparent fabric is used in the room.

It is better to decorate a small window not with sophisticated, eye-catching curtains of bright colors, but in more neutral ways. The use of lambrequins and curtains helps to visually expand the windows, and the cornice should be wider than the frame itself, and light tulle or chiffon should be hung on it.

Roman designs are useful for almost all small windows, but keep in mind that they can only be hung on a special type of curtain rod.

Features, advantages and disadvantages

A house with panoramic glazing looks unusual and stylish. And this is exactly what attracts people in such buildings. So a memorable appearance is the first of its advantages.

There are very unusual projects

Where can you see

In private houses, panoramic glazing is installed in living rooms, less often in bedrooms. Sometimes in this way an open veranda is turned into a covered one, sometimes a winter garden is made from the premises. Another possible application is to make one of the walls of the pool glass. In general, there are many applications and they are non-standard and interesting.

Balcony with panoramic glazing - residents of high-rise buildings are provided with an excellent view

In apartment buildings, balconies or loggias are decorated with panoramic windows. It is much less common to find large windows in residential areas in high-rise buildings, but such houses do exist. True, in our country it is extremely rare.

Advantages and disadvantages

If you are thinking that it would be nice to have panoramic glazing in your home, consider the following features:

  • The presence of large glass means a lot of light in the room and a beautiful view that opens at any time of the day. That's a plus. But transparency works in both directions: there is also a wonderful view from the street to the room. Especially in the dark, with the lights on. And this is a minus. But it is being adjusted. The standard solution is curtains or blinds, and a non-standard solution is the use of mirrored or tinted glass. But such glass is not cheap, and these are additional costs and, given the considerable area, they are also rather large.

    Being in everyone's sight - not everyone likes this prospect

  • One glass of thermal conductivity is much lower than the wall located nearby. Therefore, windows are made of double-glazed windows, and for central Russia they should be two-chamber (three glasses, two chambers between them). In terms of thermal conductivity, they are not inferior to a brick wall of 2 bricks with a layer of insulation (thermal conductivity coefficient is about 0.9 and it can be increased by using special glass). So fears that heating bills will be too high are unfounded.
  • There are concerns that large windows are easy to break. No easier than breaking through a frame wall. A house with panoramic windows is quite safe, since the glass, even in the standard version, is covered with a reinforcing film. If “completely” does not suit you, install reinforced or armored glass.
  • You will have to constantly take care of the glass. Dirty splashes on glass look terrible. This is worth considering.

    Glass requires constant care

  • In the hot summer, you will have to use thick curtains, blinds, or at least light curtains that will limit the penetration of sunlight. And still, be prepared for the fact that the furniture, walls, and all furnishings will quickly fade.
  • There is also such a phenomenon as glass icing in winter. Even if the windows are heated, in frosty weather there will be frost on the windows. It must be cleaned regularly. You will also have to remove the snow in winter - it limits the view, although it looks great.

In general, there are both advantages and disadvantages of panoramic glazing in the house. When planning to build a house with panoramic windows, take into account such an important factor as the picturesqueness of the landscape overlooking it. If this is a neighbor’s fence, the cost of panoramic glazing is unlikely to be justified...

House with panoramic windows: features

There are also some features that cannot be classified as either advantages or disadvantages. Firstly, glass in panoramic windows can be with or without imposts (beams). Solid glass from floor to ceiling looks stylish, but is expensive, as increased demands are placed on it.

Divided windows look different, but no worse. The cost of such panoramic glazing is lower, but the division into parts by imposts must also be supported by the remaining windows (of normal size). It's worth remembering.

Panoramic windows can be made of solid glass, or from pieces separated by imposts

When planning a site, a house with panoramic windows in our latitudes is recommended to be positioned so that a large glass area faces south with an accuracy of ±30°. In this case, the adjacent room will be light and warm. But there is another disadvantage - the walls, floors, and furniture will fade. One way out is to choose colors where the color loss is not so noticeable. The second way out is to turn the house around so that the panoramic windows face east or west. This is an acceptable position in which there is enough light, and it does not pour into the windows all day long. In general, it's up to you.

The following heating devices are mainly used to heat panoramic windows:

To prevent the cold from coming from the windows in winter, heating devices are placed under them to create a thermal curtain. You cannot install traditional radiators here, but you can install built-in (in-floor) radiators or convectors. They can be electric or part of a water heating system, but their installation is complicated, and their price is considerable.

Multiple windows

It is rare to find a situation where there is only one opening in the living room. If there are several of them, curtains can be used either completely identical, or repeating through one, and the most varied in appearance (while maintaining symmetry). It is very important to use a homogeneous type of matter.

When you know that there are two or three windows in the living room, this is not enough to make the right decision. One approach should be when placing them on touching walls. Another is when they are all on one of the walls. The key unshakable rule is the complete identity of all openings, the exclusion of asymmetry in a classic interior. A slight difference can only be afforded in a modern setting.

Stylish unity is expressed in the use of visually matching (in color and texture) textile products.

Construction with a balcony

If the hall has not a simple window, but a balcony door, it will be more difficult to properly design this structure.

An important rule: you should not choose dark tones, unless they are immediately diluted with bright and rich colors.

This option looks good when the entire window and balcony block is completely hidden by a light green curtain of large width, and only a small corner is left to open the door. This is especially attractive when overlooking the night sky.

If you want to see the outline of the window sill and the exit to the balcony, installing decor from lilac vertical stripes is a completely original solution; they create a romantic twilight and still let in quite a lot of light.

Features of the color scheme

To adjust the window opening, you need to choose the right color. It is believed that the curtains here should be the same tone or slightly lighter than the wallpaper. This creates a natural effect.

At the same time, it is allowed that the design of such a room is based on a play of contrasts. For example, a combination of dark curtains with light walls is used. Or warm shades are contrasted with cold ones. However, caution and judgment must be exercised when planning such experiments. Otherwise you can end up with chaos.

Drawing plays a corrective role. If you do not want to use a plain curtain, you should give preference to a large pattern. Moreover, if the window is not high enough, you need to use a pattern with vertical stripes. If the opening is too narrow, you need the pattern to visually expand it.

Decor

To decorate a window opening with curtains, you should think not only about their appearance, but also about functionality. Minimalism is currently in fashion.

The classic one is always popular when the straight fabric flows down, forming vertical folds. There are several methods of fastening. The most commonly used are loop, string and grommet. Sometimes consumers choose options when the curtains themselves are made in light colors, and the fittings and cornice are dark in color.

Colored curtains are perfect for a Japanese-style living room.

Roman canvases also have their positive features, which very simply regulate the level of lighting. For a single curtain, it is important that it can move freely. Accordingly, it is recommended to avoid hooks and clothespins. Round baguettes will be the best option for eyelets, and closed ones - for multi-layer ones with lambrequins.

If the living room is of impressive size, you should abandon curtains whose patterns are too small. Diagonal patterns and shortened models are not suitable for panoramic windows.

It’s better not to focus attention on a small window; pastel or neutral curtains are perfect. Roman canvases are also suitable here, but you need to take into account that a certain type of cornice must be provided for them.

What fabrics are suitable?

For sewing Roman blinds, as well as curtains of classic length for the bathroom, polyester-based fabrics are suitable, as well as mixed fabrics with a predominance of synthetic materials (approximately 85-90%) in the composition (acrylic, polyester, polyamide) and the addition of natural ones - cotton, linen, cambric, muslin. Such compositions will prevent the fabric from shrinking, withstand moisture and repeated washing, and will not fade in the sun. Rolled options are usually purchased ready-made, and here it is important to check with the seller whether the canvas is impregnated with special water-repellent compounds. This option will extend the life of the system.

Additional Tips

Experts believe that knowing a few nuances will help create an attractive appearance in a room. Let's consider those that relate to the design of windows in the living room. For a living room made in pastel colors, it makes sense to focus on the window. Otherwise, the room may seem dull and faceless.

Dark curtains with a three-dimensional pattern attract attention perfectly. However, you need to keep in mind that this solution is not suitable for every interior.

If the TV is located directly opposite the window, it is best to opt for blackout curtains. Sunlight will not break through them and interfere with viewing. In addition, if the apartment is located on the ground floor, such curtains will perfectly screen the room from the views of strangers passing by.

It should be borne in mind that heavy fabrics are not recommended for small rooms; they will weigh down the interior and visually make the living room even smaller. Large rooms should be draped with floor-length curtains that have a large and bright pattern. Monograms or lace themes are perfect.

A striped pattern visually extends the room in length or width, depending on the direction of the stripes.

It is recommended to avoid curtains made from natural fabrics in rooms facing south. The fact is that under the influence of the sun it can fade very quickly, and accordingly, its appearance will be lost. Light materials will make the room brighter.

With the right approach to design, the living room will always be a pleasure to be in.

Dormer window

It makes sense to decorate it when direct rays of the sun fall through it. An opening at an angle is best shaded with a roller cassette curtain, when the canvas slides along the side guides when unwinding and twisting, or blinds.

Square hall design

The design of a hall in a private house in the form of a “square” is recommended to be designed taking into account:

  • existing architectural elements;
  • level of natural light;
  • location of window openings;
  • area.

In a large square living room, you can install a set of chocolate-colored upholstered furniture, “filling” the room with warmth.

Glossy surfaces would be inappropriate here, since there is already plenty of space.

Highlighting the compositional center of the room can be done by lighting or placing a large carpet or fireplace on the floor. Nearby you can install an unusually shaped table with an openwork tabletop and twisted legs.

A small square hall should be filled with light-colored furniture, decorating the walls in the same way. The presence of all kinds of niches in the hall can be filled with comfortable lamps with cozy armchairs, creating a relaxation area here. They are also great for arranging flower pots and arranging shelves with books.

Living room interior in a wooden house

The modern design of a living room in a private house made of wood can be decorated in different ways, but with any decision, designers advise taking into account:

  • diverse lighting;
  • optimization of free space;
  • the ratio of the size of the room to the size of the furniture.

As a rule, you should not cover beautiful wooden walls, but it is better to additionally treat them with light-colored varnish. Choosing furniture in pastel colors will give the room an atmosphere of peace and tranquility. The floor can be covered with boards or parquet, which goes well with log walls.

Color selection

A big plus of a room with windows on different walls is good lighting. Therefore, the interior of a living room with windows on different walls can be done in any colors - the choice is almost unlimited. Limitations can only be imposed by the area of the room - in small rooms, light colors are more appropriate, visually increasing the volume of the room.

Now the trend is to use fairly bright colors to decorate the living room: brown, emerald, green, blue, turquoise, brown tones, even black. Coffee and purple tones are very popular. The brightest colors - red, orange, terracotta - are used only locally - on an accent wall.

For a living room decorated in pastel colors, choose furniture, textiles, and pillows in richer colors. For living rooms with bright walls, light tones of textiles and subdued tones of furniture (both light and dark colors) would be more appropriate.

In any interior, inclusions of a contrasting color would be appropriate - pillows, vases, paintings, watches, decorative items.

How to decorate a window sill?

The window sill is an integral part of the window; sometimes it is a functional element of the living room. For example, if the room has an excellent view of the city or nature, a window sill can replace a soft seat if complemented with pillows. This is possible if you are dealing with a low window opening.

It is pleasant to sit in such a place, observing life outside the window (it promotes relaxation).

The window can be supplemented with a wooden bench under it, where it is good to place pots of flowers. This element would be a great addition to a country style living room. You can also make shelves for books under the window.

A library under the windowsill will look stylish and give the atmosphere of the living room a special intellectual overtone.

How to arrange furniture in the hall?

Arranging furniture in a living room with two windows requires special attention. Things to consider:

  • The height of the window sills. So that the items that are planned to be placed below can easily enter.
  • Direction of the sun. So that it does not shine into the TV or monitor screen.
  • The width of windows and free walls. It is advisable to draw a diagram with exact dimensions and select furniture based on it.

It is recommended to start planning the interior of living rooms by determining the location of the sofa, because... it is the largest piece of furniture.

If you have a beautiful view from the windows, place the sofa opposite. But this solution is not suitable for sunny rooms, otherwise sitting on the sofa will be uncomfortable - you will have to squint. A sofa facing the window opening is also a great way to maintain the opportunity to enjoy the view and watch TV.

In the photo there is a sofa in the corner living room

If the species is of little interest to you, use one of 3 methods:

  • Straight sofa with back to the wall. Square living rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows look especially impressive with this composition.
  • Corner sofa with back to openings. The same as the first option, but an ottoman or a corner on one side will not allow you to place a chair.
  • Corner sofa sideways. Suitable for zoning a rectangular elongated narrow living room with openings on the long side.

A TV or projector screen is hung opposite the sofa; under it there may be a fireplace or an aquarium. The coffee table is always in the center, with armchairs or poufs on either side.

The free walls have space for cabinets, shelves and display cases. If you need to zone the space, the rack can be placed with its end facing the wall. Behind it you can select a workplace, a cozy relaxation area with a floor lamp and books, or leave space for a dining table or a small bar.

Which curtains to choose?

The choice of curtains is determined by many components. We can talk about a private house with a balcony in the room where guests and household members gather.

In the living room of a city apartment there may be a window with a balcony door. Sometimes there is not one window in the hall, but two or three. It can be small or large. If the windows in the room are located at different heights, you can compensate for this by using a lambrequin or a wide baguette cornice.

Lambrequins are also good to use on panoramic windows. If the living room has access to a balcony, this design model is not suitable: problems will arise with opening the door.

Fabric sheets on several windows, due to the symmetry of the arrangement, will give the room additional height. A common curtain on several window openings will visually make the living room wider. To achieve this effect, you need to use a single tulle curtain that runs across all the windows, and hang sliding curtains along the edges. Curtains with a horizontal pattern will also help to make the window visually wider. Although this is only appropriate in rooms with low ceilings.

To make a low-lying window appear higher, the cornice must be placed right under the ceiling, using curtains with grommets.

The disadvantages of a narrow window, which allows little natural light into the room, can be easily compensated for by a wide cornice. Taking into account its size, it is necessary to select curtains. This will help hide the small size of the window opening. In this case, with the curtains open, the windows will be fully used to transmit daylight.

Advantages and disadvantages

Interior windows in the wall have strengths and weaknesses.

  • The interior design of the apartment is changing. True, not always for the better;
  • communication between family members improves. This is especially important if there are children - there is no need to open the door when monitoring their activities (this is always distracting);
  • the room is visually enlarged due to additional lighting and a partially transparent wall;
  • lighting improves;
  • the window sill can be used as an additional table or bar counter when installed between the kitchen and the dining room (living room);
  • allow you to highlight functional areas;
  • the possibility of additional ventilation appears - there is no need to install ventilation grilles at the bottom of the interior doors.
  • the level of sound insulation decreases - the window allows all types of noise to pass through well;
  • psychological discomfort appears - it always seems that you are being spied on, especially if the window is installed in the bedroom;
  • the intimacy of the situation disappears;
  • there is no opportunity to retire for meditation, relaxation or reflection - silhouettes flashing in the window opening distract at the subconscious level;
  • When installing in load-bearing walls, a design is required.

Additional Tips

When choosing curtains and decorating windows, you need to take into account some nuances of interior design:

  • if the walls, ceiling and upholstery of upholstered furniture are made in a monochromatic light color scheme, it is better to focus attention on the window;
  • dark-colored curtains with a voluminous pattern will attract attention (whether this is beneficial or not depends on the specific design decision of the living room);
  • if there is a TV in front of the window in the living room, it is better to decorate the window opening using thick curtains: they will help prevent light from entering the TV screen while watching programs (for apartments located on the first floors of buildings, thick curtains will be a salvation from prying eyes);
  • heavy fabrics are beautiful and look expensive, but they are only appropriate in spacious living rooms: a small room with such curtains seems even smaller than it is;

  • 100% natural fabrics should not be used on windows facing south, they will quickly fade and lose their elegant appearance;
  • to make the room seem lighter, it is better to avoid heavy textiles: light tulle, organza, thin silk or taffeta will be just right;
  • in small living rooms, choose window decorations that match the color of the wallpaper: this way you can visually make the room larger (plain curtains or accessories with small ornaments will look equally good);
  • For a hall of impressive size, curtains with large multi-colored patterns (for example, monograms or lace, plant themes) are suitable.
  • A striped pattern on curtains affects the perception of the height and width of the window; a horizontal stripe makes the window area wider, a vertical stripe makes it taller.

If the window faces the balcony

Curtains can also be used to decorate those windows that “look” not onto the street, but onto the balcony. You just need it to be convenient to open and close the door leading there. For example, hang a curtain on one side only.

An original and non-standard solution would be to combine three types of curtains. They will look great and not create interference if you need to travel back and forth frequently.

The following options are available:

  • Use separately adjustable, completely identical stripes made of lightweight fabric in Japanese design. The option is considered very convenient and simple. Suitable for any decor style. Easily varied and combined in new ways if necessary;
  • When a small window in the bedroom is decorated with stylish curtains called “Cafe”, it immediately becomes much more comfortable to be in it, not to mention the aura of romance spreading in the air. Comfort is created, which can be compared to the charm of a small house in nature. It will always be appropriate in a simple style;
  • Roman decor on the window is a win-win option - functional and not expensive. It always washes well, can be easily adjusted using clamps, which is very convenient - you don’t have to touch the material every time.
