Underwater glider "Sea Shadow". Tool for the Navy and for Science
At the beginning of February, new reports appeared in the domestic media about the promising underwater glider “Sea Shadow”. The special apparatus has a special architecture and uses unusual principles of movement, which gives it noticeable advantages over other types of equipment. This time the glider is proposed to be used as a means of studying the seas and oceans. Necessary o is not new. The first sample of this glider was shown a few years ago, and since then prototypes have regularly appeared at exhibitions and also been tested.
For the first time, the promising project, unnamed at that time, was told to the public in 2016 as part of the Army forum. At that time, the work continued for several years and managed to lead to the appearance of the first prototypes. Demonstration tests of the new model soon took place. Subsequently, the glider, receiving the name “Sea Shadow,” took part in new exhibitions and continues to undergo the necessary tests.
The development of the new glider was carried out by several organizations. The main developers are the St. Petersburg State Marine Technical University (SPbSMTU) and the scientific and production enterprise of underwater technologies "Okeanos". Other organizations were involved in the research. The project is being implemented with the support and supervision of the Main Research and Testing Center for Robotics of the Ministry of Defense.
The glider project started in 2011 and was developed on an initiative basis, but soon received government support. In 2012, the first prototype was built at St. Petersburg State Medical University, implementing special principles of movement and capable of diving to a depth of 100 m. In 2014, the next stage of research was completed, as a result of which a new full-size prototype appeared. Since 2015, it has been passing all necessary tests. In its current form, the Sea Shadow product is an underwater vehicle that resembles a torpedo with a set of planes. The glider is built in a cylindrical body with a head and aft fairing. There are wing planes on the sides of the hull, there is also a vertical plane and several other protruding elements. For greater convenience for testers, some prototypes are built in a transparent case. Glider length – 3 m, body diameter – 310 mm, weight – 150 kg.
The energy system of the device is based on a rechargeable battery. In the first tests, a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 70 Ah was used. The possibility of using other current sources, including more efficient ones, was also mentioned. The glider does not have the usual propulsion system and propulsion system. The essence of the project is movement using hydrodynamic forces. In this case, ballast tanks and their control systems are responsible for the movement of the apparatus.
Taking on water, the glider loses buoyancy and tends to sink to depth. The presence of several controllable tanks allows you to change not only buoyancy, but also trim. The hydrodynamic principle of movement limits speed and also imposes restrictions on maneuverability and seaworthiness. To get rid of these problems, in 2022, St. Petersburg State Medical University and Okeanos introduced the so-called. hybrid propulsion system. It retains controllable ballast tanks, but they are supplemented with a conventional propulsion engine and propulsion system. On board the glider there is a set of sensors that determine its position in space and other parameters.
