Making yarn - how to cut old things
When making your own rugs, you will need various pieces of old clothing.
Knits are best suited because the fabric has the right level of softness and pliability. It is very easy to work with; knitting does not cause any difficulties. Try to select multi-colored items so that the finished rug turns out bright, colorful and rich. You should try to cut strips of fabric for tape to the same width
First, we’ll tell you how to properly prepare yarn from old things:
- Find unnecessary T-shirts, sweaters or T-shirts made from natural materials, iron them;
- Use scissors to carefully cut off all finishing seams;
- We cut the fabric into strips up to 3 cm wide from one seam to another, without allowing the seams to intersect. The stripes must be straight, otherwise the rug will not be so beautiful;
- The strips must be cut right up to the neck;
- The last step is to create one long ribbon from strips of fabric. The T-shirt should be placed on your hand and cut diagonally in those places that remained uncut after previous manipulations. The result should be a long narrow ribbon, which we will later use to create rugs.
The process of creating yarn is relatively simple, although there are a few things to consider. For example, the density of the fabric affects the thickness of the stripes. So, the thicker the knitwear, the narrower the strips need to be cut. If clothes with sleeves were used for yarn, then you should not throw them in the trash, because we will also need them. By cutting small pieces of fabric in a spiral pattern, we obtain strips of reasonable length, which can then be sewn or knitted together.
The end result should be a lot of stripes and ribbons made from old items. They need to be wound into balls and sorted by color to make it easier to find the fabric of the desired shade when knitting. If you want a fun and bright rug, then you need to prepare as many colored balls as possible.
Process Details
Tools for work
Firstly, you need to prepare all the necessary equipment. Old T-shirts should be washed and dried thoroughly. It is advisable to choose shades that are far from the brightest, and they should also be more or less compatible with each other. A plain rug will also be boring; it is better to alternate the colors of the “yarn”. In order to get started, you should stock up on the required materials and equipment:
- Soap or soap.
- With a ruler.
- Huge size crochet hook.
- Very comfortable and sharp scissors.
- Old T-shirts.
Next, let's talk about how to make yarn from old T-shirts.
Preparing “yarn” for work
Before starting work, each T-shirt should be cut into strips, and their width should be approximately 3 cm. The process will be tedious and long, and this requires the most convenient scissors. They must cut and not chew the material. The strips should be even and of the same width - if you are not confident in your own eye, then first you should draw out the fabric. Naturally, this will take time, but the result will be worth it. Ideally, you should draw with soap or chalk, because pencils do not write on knitwear. You should sew them together into one “thread” and wind them into a ball. In the photo below you can see woven rugs, which consist not just of straight ribbons, but also rolled into tubes. To get this effect, you should wash and dry the chopped “yarn”.
How to crochet a rug from old T-shirts with your own hands
To make a rug yourself using a crocheted hook, you should knit it according to a selected pattern from prepared yarn. For example, you can make a simple round rug if you use a flat circle knitting pattern as a base. You should alternate multi-colored stripes, and the last loop must be well secured, and you can even stitch it with a needle and thread. So you will very soon have a rug made from T-shirts with your own hands using a crochet hook, and all you have to do is choose a suitable place.
Rug made of braids
There is another method of making rugs from old T-shirts with your own hands, and rugs from T-shirts made from knitted strips will look very interesting and original. For this manufacturing method, you need to wind the knitted ribbon into three balls, and then braid them into a pigtail. To get a perfectly round carpet, gradually twist everything into a spiral and sew it together. If you want to get a square rug, you should take a piece of thick fabric that is equal in size to the future rug - for the base.
Next, the T-shirt strips should be cut 8 cm longer than the finished product. Several braids should be woven, and it is not necessary to braid to the ends of the strips for it to be a fringe. The base of the rug should be generously coated with adhesive and all the braids should be laid out one after another on it in neat rows. After the adhesive has dried, you should stitch all the braids in certain places. The ends, that is, the fringe, should be trimmed to ensure an even edge. Here's another method for making a T-shirt rug with your own hands - you don't need any special skills at all. Fantasy, patience and more patience, and you will have a masterpiece.
Weaving round rugs on a hoop
Using the simplest tool - a hula hoop or a simple sports hoop, you can easily make another rug. Skilled craftswomen have come up with many options for making rugs from T-shirts with their own hands. For this method you will need:
- Sports hoop.
- Several old T-shirts.
The rug will be the same size as the hoop. So, let's begin! All pre-prepared consumables should be cut crosswise into hairs, and their width should be approximately 7 cm. Now the resulting rings need to be pulled onto the hoop - carefully in order, filling the circle as a whole. You should not pull the strips too tightly, so that in the future the product does not begin to wrinkle, losing its shape. You should also carefully monitor the intersection of all fabric strips in the center of the hoop. When this work is completed, you should begin weaving the fabrics. Attach a strip of fabric in the middle and alternately pass the warp threads above and below.
New ribbons should be tied in knots and hidden on the underside of the fabric. You should weave very tightly, and try to ensure that all further rows are pressed tightly against the previous ones. Gaps and holes in the carpet are unacceptable. At the end of the weaving, you should cut the strips that are stretched over the hoop and either sew them together or tie them into knots, leaving a fringe. You should trim everything with sharp scissors, creating a nice, smooth edge. You can make such a rug even with children, and it can be used everywhere.
Shaggy rug on a mesh
And then we invite you to try to make a wonderful and cozy accessory for a child’s room or bedroom. Making a rug from old T-shirts with your own hands looks like this step by step. First, you should purchase a special construction mesh - it should be strong and of high quality, since it would be extremely disappointing if, after all the work and time spent, the product begins to fall apart due to contact with liquid. This mesh will become the basis of the future rug - it is to it that you will attach the knitted fibers.
If you still doubt the strength of the base, you should tie them yourself. This can be done using a hook and a strong synthetic thread. You should take a fillet mesh diagram, but be sure to take into account the fact that each cell must be at least 1 square centimeter in size. This option for making a base is also remarkable in that it can be made into any shape - square, round, heart-shaped, oval, and others. The options will be limited only by your imagination. You can choose the degree of “fluffiness” of the rug yourself - when preparing ribbons for lint from old T-shirts.
A hand-made rug without a hook will be more difficult to make than with one. The best strip size would be a strip with a length of 12 cm, and then the carpet will be both fluffy and soft. Take a thick hook and pull the knitted ribbons into each hole of the mesh base. You can mix all the shades, and also make a pattern from the fibers. The strips should be tied into knots, and at the end of the work, all that remains is to trim the finished product with scissors - and now, you are the happy owner of a unique rug.
Illuminated rug
It is not difficult to crochet a rug from T-shirts with your own hands, and this is a wonderful accessory - at night you will wake up and go to the kitchen, to the toilet, to the nursery - and, naturally, you should bump into pieces of furniture and make noise, risking waking up the rest of the sleepers. But I also don’t want to turn on the light, and there is not always such an opportunity. It is for such cases that this carpet is indispensable.
To create this wonderful product, you will need an LED strip, old T-shirts and a crochet hook (and a thick one). The tape, which is rolled into a spiral, is used as a base for the rug, and the “thread” from T-shirts is used as a connecting strap. A sealed, closed tape equipped with LEDs is perfect for this purpose.
T-shirts should be chosen in a neutral shade and cut into thinner strips, not 3 cm wide, but 2 cm. Simply tie a ribbon with your hands or using a hook and gradually roll it into a spiral. This carpet can also act as a night light for a child’s room, gently scattering light across the floor without interfering with healthy sleep. Naturally, there are ready-made night rugs on sale, but it is precisely this kind of rug, made with your own hands, that will become useful and will be much better than purchased products.
Shaggy knotted rug
The basis for such a rug is a construction polypropylene mesh or a mesh for needlework. The pile can be made from any soft, non-flowing material - knitwear, fleece, terry cloth or thick knitting threads. Craftswomen often use old T-shirts to make it - this rug is soft and does not require extra costs.

Steps, photo | Description of actions |
Step 1 | Prepare strips of knitted fabric: open the sleeves and neck of the T-shirts, open the seams. Cut them using sharp tailor's scissors into strips 3-4 cm wide. The length of the strips depends on how long the pile you want to get, 10-25 cm is enough, taking into account tying a knot and further leveling. |
Step 2 | Spin the resulting knitted strips in the washing machine without detergents on the shortest setting, for example, “rinse”. This is enough for them to curl into tubes. If you are using knitwear in several bright colors, make sure it does not fade, or wash different colored pieces separately. |
Step 3 | The resulting blanks will be almost dry after spinning; they need to be dried completely in a dryer or scattered on a large terry towel - it will quickly absorb the remaining moisture. |
Step 4 | While the knitted pieces are drying, prepare the mesh. Cut it to the size of the rug, give the base the desired shape. If the edges of the mesh are unraveling, tape them on both sides with adhesive tape. |
Step 5 | To thread the pieces through the mesh you will need a crochet hook. It is brought from above into one of the grid cells and taken out into the adjacent cell. Grab a loop from a knitted tube folded in half and pull it into the first cell. The ends of the workpiece are threaded into the resulting knitted loop and the knot is slightly tightened. It’s more convenient to do this using the same crochet hook. The ends are straightened, their length is equalized if necessary, and only after that the knot is tightened tightly. When making a plain rug, it is more convenient to start from one edge and, moving in rows, fill the grid. If you want to make a rug with a pattern, it is better to create a template in advance and color the grid with multi-colored markers - this will make it easier for you to fill the pattern with scraps of the desired color. |
Step 6 | The rows are filled in a checkerboard pattern - this will ensure uniform thickness and density of the pile. Check the underside of the rug from time to time and straighten out any knots if necessary. |
Step 7 | The pile of the finished rug can be trimmed with scissors, and the edges can be trimmed with fabric to give it a finished look. To extend the life of the rug, you can sew thick fabric to the bottom. |
A similar rug can be made without a mesh; instead, you will need a dense base fabric. Knitted fabrics are made using the above method.
The base fabric is cut to fit the size of the rug. Glue a strip of narrow double-sided tape, and attach knitted tubes to it with the middle part, close to each other. They are sewn on a machine directly over the tape.
Making a patchwork rug on a fabric basis
The first row of scraps is folded back, a second strip of tape and knitted blanks are glued at some distance, and stitched. Continue this way to the opposite edge of the base.

Shaggy volumetric rug
A rug made according to the following master class will be an excellent addition to the bathroom or bedroom for underfoot, because it will turn out incredibly soft and fluffy! Anyone can make it, even a child.
View of the finished “shaggy” product.
Necessary materials:
- several old T-shirts;
- scissors;
- backing mesh (you can use a mesh from a construction or sewing store, with a mesh size of 5-10 cm, you can also use burlap).
Step-by-step creation process:
- The T-shirt needs to be cut into strips, which are then divided into short sections. The recommended width of the strips is 3-5 cm, the length depends on the desired result: the shorter the strips, the lower the resulting “grass” of the rug will be.
Important! The finished pieces will be folded in half and attached to the base using a knot (add + 2 cm). This must be taken into account when measuring stripes.
The wrong side of the product and the weaving process.
- The selected base must be given the future shape of the rug. If you are using burlap or soft mesh, you can pre-fold and sew the edges to prevent boring.
- The strips must be threaded into the mesh cells and secured with a knot. For greater convenience, you can use a crochet hook.
If you use burlap, the process may take longer, but the results will still be great! To make the rug sufficiently soft, fluffy and voluminous, it is important to attach the strips very tightly.
Use burlap as a backing.
Options for weaving carpets from braids
The advantage of the following product is that you can use any materials to make it: threads of different colors, ropes, pompoms, braid, strips from old clothes (denim stripes look good), grass yarn, etc.
Making the base:
- To begin, take cardboard or other thick material and cut a circle out of it. This is easy to do if you take a ballpoint pen and tie a thread to it the length of the radius of the carpet. Press one end with your finger (or make a hole, pull a thread there and tie a knot at the end), this will be the center. Move the other end of the thread with the pen around this point, do not forget to fully tension the thread and draw a circle with the pen.
- Next, draw stripes through the middle around the entire circle. There should be 30 lanes, i.e. If you count from the center, you should get 60 lines. Try to place them at the same distance from each other.
Make cuts from the edge along lines of approximately 2.5 cm. Take a ball of yarn, which will be the basis of the work. Secure the end with tape in the center of the cardboard. Pull the thread to the edge and hook it into the cut in the cardboard. Pass the thread to the next cut on the back side (clockwise) and bring it back to the front side.
Lower it to the opposite edge, be sure to go through the center. Hook the thread over the cut again and bring it out through the next cut along the edge. And do this until the entire base is covered with cobwebs. Cut the thread and also secure it with tape on the back of the cardboard circle.
Weaving:
To start weaving, take the thinnest materials and, moving away from the center, the thickness can be increased. Throw the thread in a circle, step back 2-3 cm from the center. Two warp threads should be on top, and the next two on the bottom. The technology was borrowed from the village. Grandmother's rugs used to be woven in the same way. The shuttle ran, alternating above and below the thread.
When you go through the first row, there should be four threads left at the end of the circle, pass under them and over them, as is the order when weaving, they will show you that the row is finished. At the end of the row, pull the string closer to the center. To pull the thread out from under the warp and align it, you can use, for example, a crochet hook or a knitting needle. Make 4 rows using one color.
Returning after 4 rows to the four threads woven together, you can add a different color or a different texture of thread. Make four more rows. Don't forget to compact them towards the center.
Next, moving away from the center (about 1/3 of the rug), no longer two warp threads are intertwined together, we switch to alternating through one thread (one on top, one on bottom). When changing threads, make four rows of each color, but if the thread is thick or bright, then it is enough to weave 2 rows.
Weave the rug to the required width. To finish the job, turn the base over and cut the warp threads that should be between the cuts and the mat will be removed from the cardboard base. Tie the cut ends together with a double knot.
Turn the rug over and carefully tie and hide all the ends of threads and ropes that were created when moving from one row to another.
Places where nodules have formed can be decorated with pompoms or tassels.
You can make original rugs from unwanted sweaters. To do this, cut the sweater lengthwise into strips that will twist themselves into spirals. Sew them one to the other along the length and wind them into a ball. Lay in a circle, sew the resulting rug.
Woven rugs combined in a composition look ideal.
Preparation
Of course, first of all you will need to prepare the material for weaving the rug. To do this, collect the T-shirts and cut them into even strips approximately 3 cm wide.
This task is tedious and long, so you need to choose scissors with comfortable handles and long, well-sharpened blades that will cut and not “chew” the fabric.
If you don’t really rely on your own eye, then it’s better to first draw even stripes on the T-shirts. It won’t take much time, and the final result will be much better and more accurate.
An ordinary, simple pencil draws very poorly on knitwear; it is better to use a sharpened chalk or soap.
Look carefully at the photographs; they clearly show that some rugs consist of flat ribbons, while others consist of peculiar twisted “pasta.”
If the second option suits you better, you will need to wash the prepared strips. After washing, they will roll into tubes themselves, all that remains is to dry them.
How to make a rug from wine corks
An unusual rug made of wine corks will be a real decoration for a bathhouse or bathroom. The technology for making such a useful decoration is quite simple. All you need to do is find the raw materials, i.e. corks in the required quantity, rinse them and dry them.
Cork material is not subject to rotting processes, bacteria do not multiply on it, which is why a cork mat must be present in those places where you perform barefoot.
For work we will need:
- wine corks in quantities from 150 pieces;
- rubber mat;
- cutting board;
- sandpaper;
- glue.
Stages of work:
- We cut the clean and dried cork lengthwise into two parts;
- We lay the blanks on the base, pre-distributing them according to color if necessary, into a mosaic.
- Before gluing, each half is treated with sandpaper for better adhesion.
Many housewives love to decorate their home with various products. Made with your own hands, they create an atmosphere of warmth, coziness and comfort on winter evenings. A good option to diversify the interior of an apartment and introduce elements of antiquity into it is to make a crocheted rug from old things, the execution of which is simple and accessible.
You will need to prepare source materials. Go through old things. T-shirts, dresses, tights, skirts and others made from knitted and synthetic materials will be useful. Cut them into strips in a spiral and wind them into balls.
Prepare a hook size 8.5-10. It will be great if the balls turn out to be multi-colored.
Crocheted rug
Take a knitted ribbon and start tying it with thread in a spiral. While tying, wrap the ribbon into a ring. When the rug is large enough, carefully secure the end of the tape.
In this way you can get a dense, practical rug from old T-shirts, created with a hook and thread with a needle.
We looked at the step-by-step procedure for creating a rug from T-shirts with your own hands using different methods: this is a very exciting and interesting procedure. At the end of the work, you will receive an excellent thing that will be useful both in the bathroom and in the children's bedroom.
Massage mats
Foot massage is a very useful activity. Especially for children in whom they are just developing, and people with flat feet. And it’s just nice to sometimes walk on a relief surface with bare feet, but city residents do not have this opportunity or it is rarely available.
Do-it-yourself massage mats made from scrap materials will help satisfy this need.
Out of traffic jams
Wine lovers may have a large number of bottle caps at home. The cork wood from which they are made is a natural, harmless, pleasant to the touch material. But the most important thing is that it is not afraid of moisture, and bacteria multiply on it with great reluctance. Therefore, corks are perfect for creating a rug.

It can be used not only as a massage, but also placed in the bathroom or in front of the front door.
Cork square mat
Before you start making it, the corks need to be washed with soapy water to remove traces of wine and dried well. Then prepare a sharp knife, cutting board, glue and base. For example, a travel rug.

Step 1. Cut each cork lengthwise into two halves with a sharp knife.

Step 2. Lay out the corks on a flat surface, forming a pattern or ornament and at the same time determining the dimensions of the future product.

From pebbles
Another natural material ideal for foot massage is river or sea pebbles. The main thing is that it is round, without sharp edges. However, pebbles that are too smooth and polished with water will not work - they do not stick well to the base.
DIY pebble rug
For it, it is best to take a small foam rubber mat with holes.

And instead of glue, you can use waterproof silicone sealant.
You can fix the pebbles with sealant
Then everything follows the already familiar pattern.

Step 1 | Turn the rug over with the smooth side up – it will be easier to stick the pebbles to it. |
Step 2 | We lay the pebbles on the mat “dry”, selecting them according to shape and color. |
Step 3 | Carefully remove the pebbles from the mosaic, squeeze silicone onto their back side and return them to their place, pressing them onto the base. |

From other materials
You can also use other materials to make massage mats using this technology: chestnuts, plastic bottle caps, wooden blocks with beveled edges, pencils, buttons, and so on.

It is better to sew small items such as buttons or pencils to the base fabric.
If you are planning a rug with a pattern of buttons, apply the pattern to the base with a pen or grease pencil, then the pattern of buttons will turn out more neatly
Orthopedic mat
Combination mats with different types of coverings are very useful for improving blood supply to the legs. For contrast, they also include soft materials: ropes, pompons, sponge, synthetic washcloth, Velcro, fur.

As you can see, anyone can make a small rug for a variety of purposes without having any special creative abilities or special skills. If I had the desire and some free time.
Rugs for children's rooms
One of the most original products of this kind is assembled from pompoms. Be sure to use filler - centipon or foam rubber, so the carpet turns out soft and warm, very cozy. The most suitable material is natural knitwear.
Each piece is stitched around the circumference by hand using a simple stitch. Place a lump of filler in the center, pull the fabric into a ball, and secure it with stitching. It is better not to sew the balls to the lining, but to attach them with a glue gun.
A fluffy rug resembles a small lawn, especially if done in green colors. The work is painstaking, but not complicated, it is performed on a mesh intended for carpet weaving, or construction mesh can be used.
Cut strips of the same length (up to 12 cm), fold them in two, thread them into the meshes using a crochet hook so that the ends form “grass” and tie them in a knot. In this way, fill the entire prepared mesh.
Techniques and features of making pompoms
The step-by-step process of making a carpet from pompoms with your own hands should begin with the creation of these very pompoms.
- The simplest method, known from school labor lessons, is making pom-poms using cardboard blanks. Two circles of the same diameter are cut out of thick cardboard. It is worth considering that the larger the diameter, the larger the pompom will be. A smaller circle is cut in the center of each workpiece. Cardboard circles are aligned and thread is wound around them. The more often it is laid, the denser the pompom will be. The threads are cut on the sides with nail scissors and neatly pulled together in the middle. Afterwards, the product should be fluffed and the unsightly protruding ends should be trimmed.
- You can make pompoms more productively using a regular chair. The threads are wound between the legs. Then, the resulting “tape” is pulled together in several places and cut between the dressings. To obtain identical pom-poms, the workpiece should be separated using a measuring tape before re-upholstering.
- For small pom-poms, a similar procedure can be performed on a regular table fork by winding the threads around the tines.
- Less convenient and less productive, but still valid, is the method of making pompoms using your fingers. From two to four fingers can be involved. The thread is wound around the fingers, removed, pulled together in the center, and the loops are cut with scissors.
- For another way to make fluffy blanks for a rug, cardboard toilet paper rolls will come in handy. Before use, they should be compressed, giving the cardboard a triangular shape. Here the thread is also wound and, after cutting, pulled together in the middle. The pompom is ready!
Additional Information. The number of dressings is inversely proportional to the diameter of the finished pom-poms. If large ones are needed, dressings should be done less frequently.
Preparing the base and mesh of the carpet
- The most convenient base for a pompom mat is a construction mesh. Firstly, it can be bought at almost any construction store. Secondly, it is durable and has clearly demarcated cells, so the pompoms will be distributed evenly. And thirdly, no other base can boast such ease of attaching pompoms. There is no need for any additional equipment except the hands of a master. But to increase the speed of the process, you can use a crochet hook.
- If you don’t have time to go to the store, but have a soft cord at hand, then you can weave a mesh base from it on a homemade frame made of boards and nails. The main thing is that the size of the pompom is larger than the cell size of such a grid.
- Some people prefer a fabric backing. But not all fabric will work. For example, denim, tapestry or corduroy will hold the shape of the rug perfectly.
- An interesting option for the base is a ready-made rubberized mat from the store. The process looks like this step by step. We buy a ready-made rug of the required size with a rubber base and cover its front part with pom-poms.
DIY pompom rug - selection of materials
To make a rug you need the following materials:
- Threads for knitting, leftover yarn will do. The thicker and fluffier the threads, the more magnificent the balls for the rug will be.
- Thick cardboard/paper roll - for forming pompoms.
- Scissors.
- Base mat with wicker frame. You can buy it at a handmade goods and crafts store.
Having prepared everything you need, you can begin to manufacture the components.
... and knit
Carpets, as already mentioned, are crocheted. In general, this is no simpler than knitting, only the properties of the finished products are slightly different. There are many patterns for crocheting rugs on the Internet, but for beginners, in order to even understand the symbols of loops and operations, they would have to learn too much educational material. So let's start with the basics.
How the first loop is made when crocheting is shown on the left in Fig. This is already enough to, by passing a loop into a loop, tie a braid for a sewn rug. And on the right there it is given how to tie the next row to the previous one.
Basic crochet techniques
This way you can make a whole knitted rug, even a round one, see another video:
Video: knitting a round rug
This is where it happens to experienced craftswomen when a problem arises: I knitted it exactly according to the pattern from the recommended material, but it took it and pushed it out with a hump (cap, dome). The fact is that you can only increase the length of the outer rows by passing 2 of their loops into one of the previous ones by using an integer number of loops. It cannot be irrational, like π. The exact length of the row is adjusted mechanically by an experienced knitter by tightening the loops. But a person is not a robot, everyone’s working skills are different. A scheme developed by someone under their own hands may not be entirely correct for another.
However, there is no need to unravel the finished rug and bandage it, and it won’t do any good. If it doesn't look exactly like a jester's hat, you can align it using the following instructions:
- We prepare hotter water for soaking, 55-60 degrees (the hand can barely tolerate it);
- We dilute PVA in it at the rate of 1.5-2 tbsp. spoons per 10 l;
- Soak the rug without creasing it;
- While it gets wet, prepare a hard, smooth, moisture-resistant substrate. Ideally - a piece of plywood covered with plastic film in 2-4 layers;
- When the water has cooled to lukewarm (32-35 degrees), remove the mat and lay it out on a mat to dry. There is no need to keep it in water until it has completely cooled down, the effect will disappear;
- If the backing is plywood or wood, we additionally spread out the mat with pushpins;
- Once completely dry, the mat knitted according to a proven pattern will definitely level out. No - look for flaws in your work. An insignificant admixture of PVA will not prevent the product from dissolving.
This method of molding woven products was once invented by Soviet black market workers and underground workers in order to make “homemade” jeans stand up like a “firm”. At the same time, knitting lovers also adopted it. The quality of jeans of that time is long gone, but the PVA doesn’t seem to have deteriorated...
Knitting material
Simple yarn is not suitable for knitting a rug; it is not so dense and can quickly become unusable; besides, the material depends on where you want to place your product. The weight and slip of the rug are very important if you want to place it in the bathroom or toilet, on tiles.
Jute is a clean and environmentally friendly material, the yarn is made from a herbaceous plant growing in Asia and India. In the photo, a knitted jute rug looks harmonious in an interior with wooden furniture or parquet. It does not slip, is dense and does not deform even after time.
Twine has the same properties as jute, but it is easier to wash and more elastic.
Homemade yarn from old things. Old blankets or sheets can also be put to good use. Cotton or chintz items cut into strands create a soft, non-slippery material. The tighter you tie them, the better the rug will hold its shape.
Special yarn for rugs is undoubtedly the best option. Rugs are soft and warm from this yarn. They are quite durable and do not slip.
The advantage of such a product is that it is not afraid of water and does not slip at all; of all the previous yarn options, it is best suited for tiles in the bathroom or toilet. The only negative is the stiffness.
Knitting
Older people probably still remember do-it-yourself rugs, crocheted from old dressing gowns, shirts, and T-shirts. Similar multi-colored round rugs decorated the bedrooms of grandparents, wooden stools in the kitchens, and were constant decorative items in village houses.
Similar knitting is still used today. The number of patterns and geometry of such floor decorations has only increased.
It is possible to create a knitted creation without using a crochet hook or knitting needles. For example, a rug made from socks with your own hands. The video will show the whole process, and the work itself will get rid of a bunch of slightly torn socks or socks that did not find their pair after washing.
But you will need a lot of socks, so you can unload not only your linen drawer, but also rid the pantries of your parents and other more distant members of the extended family from such unnecessary things.
How to make a rug with your own hands from threads without a hook, without knitting needles?
Knitted rugs look cute. You can knit square, round or oval rugs. Options in the form of owls or the faces of various animals are also possible. These rugs are suitable for a child's room, the baby should like them. Some people like delicate openwork rugs.
However, if you do not know how to knit, you can make a rug from threads without a hook and without knitting needles. To do this you will need:
- Yarn of various colors and thicknesses
- Scissors
- Large sheet of cardboard
- Scissors
- Felt pen
- Ruler
Master class on a thread rug:
- Draw a circle of any diameter on cardboard. In the future, your mat will be the same size as this circle.
- Using a long ruler and marker, break the circle into sections. There should be 60 sections in total.
- Make a 2cm cut on each line.
- Fix the thread in the center of the circle. Then pull the thread through and insert it into the cut.
- The next time you pull the thread on the opposite side. So stretch the thread along the entire marking.
- At the end, secure the thread.
- Then start cross weaving according to the 2x2 pattern; in the photo you can see how to pull the thread. There should be a thin yarn in the center, since the carcass threads are placed very tightly here.
- Continue weaving until the end. In the middle of the weave, switch to a 2x1 pattern, at the end of the weave - 1x1. Since the distance between the frame lines will expand, you can use thick yarn.

How to make a rug with your own hands from threads without a hook and without knitting needles
Basketry
Choose a shape: circle or rectangle. To make rugs with your own hands using weaving technology from old T-shirts, prepare a backing, depending on the chosen shape.
A wicker rug can be made without a hook.
To create a round-shaped product, you will need a circle of paper, the diameter should correspond to the desired size of the work. Divide it into equal segments passing through the center, you can use a ruler. Holes are made at the edges to secure the threads. When the workpiece is ready, start working on the gimp thread. After fixing it, weave in a circle with yarn, above and below the thread. The ends of the yarn are secured from the inside out using a thread and a needle.
Rug made from old T-shirts: manufacturing methods and instructions
There are several ways to make a beautiful rug from unwanted old T-shirts: on a hoop, braiding, from scraps of fabric, on a mesh, knitted, braided, crocheted. Each method will allow you to create a unique work that will decorate your home.
To begin with, you should try to make simple round rugs that start from the center, gradually increasing in diameter as the rows are knitted.
For the “weaving” technique, take a round base or a rectangle.
When the weaving is finished, the tip of the ribbon is secured with a needle and thread.
The base of the mat is a painting or plaster mesh. Cut a piece of mesh to the size of the future carpet.
Materials and tools
Prepare scissors, a large plastic hook, soap, old knitwear, and a needle and thread.
For a crocheted rug made from old T-shirts, you can use any pattern, for example, similar to the pattern for napkins.
Note! The material for yarn should be taken exclusively from natural materials.

Rugs made of pompoms in the shape of animals
Children really like unusual rugs in the shape of animals; they can be placed near the crib, work table or in the play area.
How to make a rug in the shape of a sheep
Master class on making a sheep rug.
- Knit 43 pompoms from thick light-colored threads.
- Prepare a mesh base in the form of a rectangle and sew 42 pom-poms to it at a minimum distance from each other.
- Sew the tail in the center of one of the short sides.
- Knit a muzzle from dark gray yarn. To do this, cast on 88 stitches on four needles, knit with garter stitch in a 9 cm circle, then decrease 4 stitches in each row.
- Crochet the ears using single crochets or chain stitches.
- Knit the legs on knitting needles, to do this, cast on 15 stitches and knit with garter stitch 15 cm.
- For the eyes, choose beautiful buttons or embroider them with thread, and similarly embroider the mouth.
Kids will love this sheep made from pompoms.
DIY bear rug
In a similar form, you can knit a rug in the shape of a teddy bear for a nursery. To work you need to prepare:
- 850 g of thick yarn in the main shade;
- 160 g of yarn several shades lighter;
- 80 g pink yarn;
- hook and knitting needles for knitting small parts.
Let's get to work.
- Pre-prepare the base for the body with a length of 50 cm and a width of 40 cm. The general parameters of the teddy bear are 75x60.
- Using the main color yarn, make 68 small fluffy balls and 3 pink ones.
- Knit the head, paws and ears of the bear cub.
- Connect all the parts and sew them to a base made of thick fabric.
- Embroider the eyes and mouth, crochet the pillows and decorate the ears and nose with pom-poms.
Options for attaching pompoms based on
There are several ways to attach fluffy balls to the base:
- Secure each ball onto a mesh base with a thread;
- You can sew a ball onto a cotton base using the thread that was used to fasten the workpiece;
- glue onto a solid base.
Any dense material is suitable as a base: mesh, cotton fabric, canvas, tapestry. If there are any knots on the back side, you should cover them with fabric, which can also be used to make an edging.
Choosing a technique for weaving rugs
There are several techniques that can be used to create a beautiful rug from scraps of fabric. Using one technology, it will be possible to make a voluminous rug in which your feet will sink. Another method will help you make a flat mat, say, for the bathroom, or a regular rug for wiping your feet. There are several popular options for creating such interior products.
Knitting
Our great-grandmothers also knitted rugs from scraps of fabric. Usually such work was done with a large hook, because the “threads” were ribbons cut from the remnants of fabric. The famous “grandmother’s” circles are rugs crocheted from fabric ribbons with large crochets. If you need to make a less dense product, then try knitting a “granny square” from such raw materials. It is good to lay such a rug on a loggia or on a closed veranda of a private house.
For open spaces, rugs are made from moisture-resistant materials. In particular, rugs knitted from elastic tights are popular.
Weaving
It is convenient to weave rugs from scraps of fabric with your own hands using tapestry technology if you have something to make a frame from. It is best to use wooden frames, since you can simply drive nails into them to secure the base. Its “threads” will be thinly cut pieces of fabric, literally 1 cm or less. It is clear that the shreds will have to be cut from a long piece of material, so it is good to use either scraps from cutting the material, or from old bed linen, bathrobes, dresses, etc.
A denser fabric is chosen for the warp than for the weft. Weft threads are the same strips of fabric, you can also take knitwear. The main thing is to weave them tightly using the chintz method between the “threads” of the warp and do not forget to press them. It is better not to use twill or satin weave, because these are too large “threads” to hold well in the finished rug made from scraps of fabric.
Stitching
Many people have heard the word “ryadyushka” in a number of regions of the country, meaning a blanket or bedding. And it probably appeared from rugs that were sewn from longitudinal rows of fabric (according to another version, the word “row” goes back to the weaving technologies of Kuban). The strips for the “row” are cut up to 3 cm wide. To give volume to the rug, you can sew “tucks” on it, that is, bend the patchwork strip in half lengthwise, step back from the fold no more than a centimeter and sew along the entire length. Such strips with “tucks” are connected to each other, also with a stitch on a typewriter, until you get a track or rug.
Patchwork
If you need to attach patches of thick fabric, then it is best to use patchwork sewing, otherwise called “patchwork”. No matter what version of the name the craftswomen prefer - Russian or English, they still sew the same way. Most often, this technology is used to make blankets, tablecloths, napkins and bedspreads. Rugs should be more resistant to abrasion, so it is better to use dense types of fabrics for them. You will also have to choose something even denser for the base on which the patches will be sewn.
The parts can be of any shape, the main thing is that they fit together well. It’s good, for example, to cover an old carpet that has come out with scraps. Then the upper, front part needs to be stitched on a machine, and only then manually fasten this “facade” to the old carpet. If you want to make a rug made from scraps of fabric more voluminous, then it is worth laying a layer of padding polyester between the carpet base and the stitched scraps.
Schemes for patchwork
Materials used
Very often in the old days, to make various rugs from braids with your own hands or knitted rugs, straw, flax, and hemp were used as raw materials. Such rough products found their place at the entrance to the hut. To obtain softer bedspreads, old things were used, which were cut into narrow strips and, after spinning, woven over a dense base. Round products, such as, for example, the aforementioned braided rug, occupied a special place among all household items. The master class, described below in this article, will help you create a similar simple product using folk technology. To learn how to perform a seemingly simple job, you need to master the entire technology step by step. When choosing a material, consider its structure, density and thickness. So, for example, when making rugs from braids with your own hands to cover chairs, sofas and stools, you should not use old thin knitwear and strips of warm drape at the same time in one product.
Rug made on a photo frame
A nice “masterpiece” will be created if we use 2-3 colors of ribbons from 2-3 T-shirts. The work is performed on a photo frame, the size of which is 30x45 cm.
Manufacturing technology
- We hammer nails every 3 cm onto the long side of the frame on both sides;
- We weave the warp thread through the nails;
- We weave the working thread with a snake under/over the base;
- We weave in the opposite direction;
- We can change colors if desired. The density of the rug depends on the number of rows;
- To obtain a “fringe”, leave the “tails” of the working tapes.
A cheerful “masterpiece” with colored “tails” is ready!

Various ways to attach to the base
After making braided ribbons of sufficient length and winding them into balls, you must first decide on the shape of the rug. The braided braided rugs are then secured to a base (whether rectangle, square or circle) in one of two ways:
- using glue;
- machine or hand stitch.
The first option is more convenient when laying dense and rigid workpieces. How to sew a rug from braids woven from thin material? You can carefully create the product row by row, attaching it to the base, for example, with a zigzag seam. Contrasting color stitching will be an additional design of the product. If you do not have special equipment in the form of a machine, you can connect improvised laces with hidden stitches manually. Then the work needs to be done in two stages, immediately following one after the other: sewing together the nearby braids and laying them and securing them to a fairly dense fabric base.
Preliminary stage
For the remodel to be successful, you need to take care of everything necessary in advance and choose the appropriate method of work.
Preparation of tools and materials
During the activity you will need the following tools and materials:
- old T-shirts;
- sharp scissors;
- a needle and threads of suitable density and color;
- Hook No. 15 - 20 (if you decide to knit a rug).
The specific list of basic materials depends on the chosen method of work.
Reference! When making a mat on a base or on a frame, in addition to the basic materials, you will need cardboard, glue, a frame and small nails or a gymnastic hoop.
Selecting T-shirts and preparing them for alteration
From the (clean!) T-shirts accumulated in the closet, those suitable for alteration are selected.
Item selection parameters
Fabric density. It is best to use products of the same density: thin T-shirts or sweatshirts made of thicker knitwear.
Color. You need to imagine in advance how the colors of different T-shirts will be combined in a new product.
When selecting things, you can use clothes that have different shades of the same color, for example, dark blue - blue - light blue - pale blue.
Rugs made from contrasting colored items, as well as variegated, multi-colored items, look good. In this case, you can choose several (no more than 3) primary colors and complement them with color shades.
Important! T-shirts that have lost their color (faded from the sun or faded from repeated washing) can be pre-dyed by choosing paints in the desired colors.
Master classes on making your own rugs from pompoms of various shapes and sizes
To make it, we will need multi-colored yarn, templates, a special mesh for the base and scissors, but first of all we need to decide on the size and shape of the carpet. After this, you should select the thickness of the threads and begin making fluffy balls. You can additionally insulate the product by laying padding polyester between the base and the blanks - this is an excellent option for children's rooms, as well as if the floors in the house are cold.
Square rug with pompom mesh base
At least 80 fluffy balls will go into a small square rug; there is no need to cut the threads - they will be needed for fixation. The work sequence is as follows.
- Prepare a mesh base of the required size.
- Sew or tie the first row of pompoms through the holes as often as possible so that the base is not visible.
- The edges of the finished rug can be crocheted.
Step-by-step fastening of pom-poms to the base. You can decorate the edges with fringe
Round rug made of pompoms on a knitted base
Round rugs look original in the interior; they are suitable for decorating any room. Multi-colored balls can be thrown in a circle, a spiral pattern can be created, and products made from pompoms of different sizes also look unusual.
First you need to prepare a template from paper, transfer the outline to the grid and cut out the base. Each pom pom can then be tied through the holes or glued on using a glue gun.
Step-by-step making of a round rug
Together with our master class, we propose to make a round rug on a knitted base.

First, crochet a round base for the rug from any yarn and make 60 fluffy balls of different colors.
Place the pompom in the middle, pull the threads to the back side with a crochet hook and secure between the loops.
Similarly, tie the remaining balls in a circle.
The reverse side of the rug looks unsightly.
All threads must be cut as much as possible.
Cut a fabric piece slightly larger than the base and sew it face down, wrapping the edge of the rug.

Features of making a rug from heart-shaped pompoms
The principle of making a heart-shaped rug is no different from a round one. First you need to cut out the template from paper and transfer it to the base. You can lay out balls of the same color around the perimeter and fill the center with a different tone, or secure them in a chaotic manner. We offer you to look at interesting options for designing hearts.
Rug on a hoop
A self-explanatory photo tutorial from Fab art DIY. To weave a round rug, use an ordinary hoop instead of a loom. The best project to do with your kids.
Materials and tools: old clothes, scissors, yarn or rope for the base, hoop.
Complexity: 2
Tools for work
First, you need to prepare all the necessary equipment.
Be sure to wash old T-shirts and dry them thoroughly. It is advisable to choose shades that are not the brightest; they should be more or less combined with each other. A plain rug will also be boring; it is better to alternate the colors of the “yarn”.
To get started, stock up on the necessary materials and equipment:
- Old T-shirts.
- Very sharp and comfortable scissors.
- Large crochet hook.
- With a ruler.
- Chalk or soap.
Preparing yarn
Before you start knitting a rug from a variety of T-shirts and knitted rags of different colors with your own hands, you need to prepare the yarn.
Attention! The denser the fabric, the narrower you cut the ribbons for work.
Let's look at the step-by-step process of preparing yarn:
- wash and dry things well;
- cut them into even strips of equal width (about 1.5 -2 cm);
- stretch the ribbons a little so they curl into yarn;
- sew the strips together;
- Carefully roll the stitched ribbons into balls (make sure that they do not twist and have uniform tension).
It will be great if the balls turn out to be multi-colored.
The width of the strips depends on the density of the material. The thinner it is, the wider the cut strips.
Note! Knitwear for work can be cut in two ways: in a circle and in a spiral.
Crochet
For those who know how to crochet, this method will seem the easiest to perform. In addition to T-shirts and scissors, you also need a hook.
How to make a long thread from T-shirts was described in the previous method of creating a rug. Only for this option, the strips need to be cut thinner, about 3 centimeters.
Next you can start knitting. To start working, we crochet six air loops and connect them into a circle. In the next row we add loops, one through each column, to get twelve loops.
We conditionally divide them into twelve parts and, when performing the next row in each part, add one loop. Thus, we continue to knit in circles until we obtain the desired size of the rug.
If the carpet is not completely flat, it can be straightened with an iron during the ironing process. And then leave to dry on a flat surface. Using this principle, you can make a carpet of any shape, the main thing is not to forget about the smooth transitions of colors in the product.
Fabric-based products
To make a rug, circles with a diameter of 12 cm are cut from old knitted items. A seam is laid along the edges of the workpiece “forward with a needle”, filled with padding polyester and the thread is pulled together.
You can make such a wonderful rug for a baby
For filling you can use old blankets made of padding polyester, holofiber from matted pillows, and foam rubber scraps.
The balls are manually sewn to the base. You can use a glue gun to attach the balls.
