When buying curtains and cornices to decorate a window opening, do not forget about other elements that, although unnoticeable, are necessary. For example, about the hooks on which the curtains will be attached and which will ensure the smooth movement of the curtains along the cornice.
Curtain hooks are easy to replace if necessary, reliable, and allow you to quickly and easily hang/remove curtains. Their main advantages are low cost and availability, and despite the low price, with proper use they last for many years. Hooks are available in a variety of variations on the market. Some models can not only act as a fastening element, but also perform a decorative function.

Variety of assortment
Manufacturers offer hundreds of different options for curtain hooks. But among them there are several main types:
- Plastic, metal and metal-plastic.
Plastic models are characterized by low price, lack of noise when moving curtains along the curtain rod guides, and resistance to external influences, due to which they can be used not only in residential premises, but also in the kitchen or bathroom. However, they also have some disadvantages. Over time, under the influence of the weight of the canvas, they become deformed, easily break if handled carelessly, are not able to withstand heavy weight, and therefore are only suitable for attaching light curtains.
Metal products are more reliable in operation, hold heavy curtains well, and last much longer. But they are not without some disadvantages, the main one of which is the unpleasant sound that occurs when moving the curtains. In addition, if there is high humidity in the room, they may be susceptible to corrosion, and therefore are not suitable for all rooms.
Metal-plastic hooks have the advantages of both types, while devoid of most of their disadvantages, and therefore are the most optimal option for attaching curtains.
- Hidden and decorative.
The first ones are hidden in the folds of the fabric or under the cornice strip, and therefore are not visible. The latter, on the contrary, are clearly visible - they are a decorative element that additionally decorates the composition of curtains and cornices.
- Open and closed.
The open-type fastening elements have a simple design, making it easy and quick to hang curtains on them. But they have a significant drawback - with sudden movements of the curtains when curtaining, they can jump off the hooks. But the closed-type fasteners reliably hold the curtain fabric due to the presence of a special latch-lock, but it is more difficult to hang the fabric on them.
- Basic and transitional.
Transitional hooks for curtains are the connecting link between the loops or eyelets on the curtain, clips and curtain rod, while the main ones are an independent fastener and do not require additional elements. A striking example of the basic type of fastening is runners for profile cornices.
Each type of hook has its own design features, advantages and disadvantages. But the question of which products are best to purchase is not the only one that arises when purchasing them. For many buyers, it becomes a problem how many hooks need to be purchased and at what distance from each other they need to be attached.
How should the curtain hang correctly?
Algorithm for installing round brackets and mounting the rod:
- Draw a horizontal line with a pencil in the place where you plan to hang the curtains
. ... - Place marks on the areas where the brackets are attached. ...
- Drill holes at the marks and install dowels.
- Place the washers on the wall and line up all the holes.

How many meters of tulle do you need for a three meter window?
Housewives are often concerned about this very question. The popularity of the dilemma is easy to explain - this width is the most common and is considered standard. In this case, the width can be different: from 4.5 m to 9 m. Naturally, in the first case the material will fall in a small, uniform wave, in the second - in chic, lush coattails.
Important! The window width is measured not by the frame or opening, but by the length of the cornice. This does not take into account decorative elements, such as knobs on the sides of the bar.
On the cornice, it is necessary to measure exactly the part along which the hooks will go - the working length of the cornice
As a rule, if the cornice is 3 meters, then how much tulle you need to take depends on the type of assembly chosen. If the length of the rod is 3 meters, then the calculation is done using the same formula given above. First you need to decide what kind of braid will be used. Accordingly, then the KS will be known, which will be needed to calculate the width of the material for sewing curtains.
So, let’s find out how much tulle is needed for a 3-meter window. Let's say the braid is chosen with large goblet-shaped folds, k=2.5.
3 m x 2.5 (KS) = 7.5 m + 6 cm (allowances for side hems) = 7.56 m.
That is, for a three-meter window for goblet folds you will need 7 meters 56 cm of tulle.
It is also necessary to take into account the frequency of folds, because they can be located at different pitches
Classification
Curtain and curtain hooks for wall and ceiling cornices are distinguished by material of manufacture and design. For their manufacture use:
- high quality plastic;
- metal (mainly brass, aluminum and steel);
- metal-plastic is a modern combined material.
Plastic options are suitable for light and medium weight curtains. In addition to the most affordable price among products of this type, they have another undoubted advantage - noiselessness when moving along the ledge. But over time, plastic hooks wear out and lose their shape, which entails a violation of the overall composition. This is caused by the curtains sliding off their hinges due to deformation of the hooks.
Hooks for curtains in the bathroom can be chosen either plastic or metal-plastic, or metal, chrome-plated on the outside, as in the photo below.
Another type of hooks
Along with plastic hooks for curtains, consumers also pay attention to metal hooks. Very rarely, these products are made of steel; more often, aluminum and brass are used for their manufacture. They are much stronger than plastic ones and have a longer service life.
Many decorative models of various shapes of metal hooks are produced, which, in addition to the main function of supporting curtains, are a decoration and addition to the intended design. When creating comfort and coziness in a living area, metal accessories look more attractive than their plastic competitors.
For curtains made of thick fabric, metal fittings are the most acceptable option, but they also won’t cope with very heavy curtains and won’t support the extra weight.
When buying hooks made of metal, you can't go wrong with quality: low-quality products are susceptible to corrosion and can become stained over time and leave stains on the fabric.
Aluminum is quite cheap and light, but not strong enough.
Brass has an attractive appearance, similar in color to gold. Durable if the manufacturing technology is not violated.
Steel is a budget option; you need to be careful when choosing products made from this metal.
How to calculate the number of hooks?
Before placing an order for the purchase of curtain fastening elements, you need to calculate the required number of curtain hooks. To do this, you will need to measure the width of the curtains and make calculations.
It is recommended to place the hooks at a distance of 5-10 cm. The most optimal option is 7-8 cm. Placing them in increments of 5 cm allows you to achieve deep embossed folds, but when attaching them at a distance of 10 centimeters or more there is a risk of fabric sagging and unreliable fixation of the curtain fabric.
To calculate the number of hooks for curtains, it is enough to divide the width of the curtains by the step between the fastening elements. For example, the selected distance between the clamps is 5 cm, the width of the curtains is 4 m. 4/0.05 (0.05 m = 5 cm) - 80 - the number of hooks that will be needed to hang the curtains from the cornice.
The most important step in the final process of decorating a window opening is installing curtains. What is important to know when installing curtains with your own hands? All the details are here.
One way or another, you already have ready-made curtains that need to be installed, and if you are reading this article, then it looks like you need to handle it yourself and install the curtains yourself. And everything seems clear and simple, but you need to know some little things, which is what I will help you with here.
Choosing without errors
Very important in creating the interior of your home is the ability to purchase curtain hooks. From the variety of these products, you need to carefully select exactly the element that will successfully fit into the overall concept of the room or decorate the transition from the cornice to the curtain.
For attaching curtains in the living room, round cornices with metal rings are best suited, and you need to purchase decorative hooks of the same style and color or a tone higher. On the curtains it will be possible to install grommets - special metal rings that decorate the holes on the curtains. The decorative part of the hook will decorate the attachment point, while the eyelet can even be invisible. This combination with heavy curtains will be very harmonious.
Wall or ceiling cornices with special grooves use hooks of a certain type with a moving part, sometimes they are sold in one set. In this case, the attachment point remains invisible and is decorated with folds. It is best to use this option in combination with light fabrics, lambrequins, when framing small windows or doors in the kitchen or hallway.
For bathroom curtains, it is best to use plastic rings placed on a rod. Plastic is not susceptible to moisture as much as metal, so it will last the longest. In addition, special crab elements will look good.

Fabric sheets hung on decorative curtain hooks attached directly to the wall look very extravagant. Most often, this option is used when decorating arches or windows with a rounded top. I choose a heavy fabric that will fold beautifully between the fastenings, creating a waterfall effect.
When choosing hooks for curtains, you need to carefully weigh all the nuances of the interior, the desire to emphasize or hide the mounting location, the functionality and performance characteristics of these elements.
Examples of different collection ratios
In addition to the tape, there are several other options for designing window textiles when sewing. When choosing one of them, it is also important to consider the CS.
- On the eyelets. The fabric sheet is strung on a bar using special metal or plastic rings installed along the upper edge. This option is often used for draping balcony windows. Curtains on the eyelets do not interfere with opening the door, since they can be easily moved to the side with one movement. For curtains with grommets, it is better to choose k=2.
Eyelets on thin tulle are secured using thick curtain tape - On hinges. This type of curtain design looks good in modern interiors. The canvas is attached to the bar using textile loops. They can repeat the print of the main fabric or differ in contrast, they can be solid or designed in the form of ties, k = 1.5-2.
Tulle curtain with double ruffle hinges
Before you put fabric on window curtains, curtains or drapes, you need to decide on the fill factor, type of braid, textile design features and accurately measure the length of the cornice. Knowing these parameters, sewing beautiful window textiles will not be difficult. Examples of photos of window curtains with different frames will help you choose the right option that the whole family will like.
Curtain hooks - their features
There are many ways to hang curtains on a curtain rod, but curtain hooks are the most common of them. We are talking about those elements that are attached to rings, and about independent fastenings. Most often they are used on profile cornices mounted on a wall or ceiling, but if necessary, a suitable option can also be selected for round or string models.
The hook fastening can be used without a cornice; for this you will need to fix special wall hooks at a certain distance from each other; for example, below are several photographs of this method of hanging. This option is an ideal solution when you plan to hang a light curtain that will not be moved during use.
Plastic and metal-plastic hooks are capable of holding light to medium-weight fabric. When decorating window openings with heavy curtain fabrics, it is better to use metal hooks, installing grommets on the curtains or sewing patches on them.
The main advantage of such fasteners is that the canvases hung on hooks can easily and freely move along the entire length of the cornice in both directions. If necessary (for example, if the curtains need to be washed), they can be easily removed, and if the hook breaks, it can be easily replaced with a new one.
Assembly and installation of curtains
It doesn’t matter whether you purchased a curtain with a built-in ribbon or chose each detail yourself, the question of how to assemble curtains on a ribbon will certainly arise before you, because not everyone knows the intricacies of this process. So, how can we create beautiful drapery using braid? Let's describe this process step by step.
- We check the cords in the already sewn tape. They must be tied, otherwise when tightened they will simply pull out and will only add to your headache. We tie untied cords (cords) into a tight bundle and check its density.
- Now let's start assembling. We need to take into account the width we will be collecting, adjusting the density of the pattern accordingly. As a rule, curtains that are often drawn apart are either not assembled at all, or the folds on them are minimal. It is most convenient to make the tie with an assistant to pull from both sides. If there are no such in the house, then, having secured the threads on both edges, we begin to form the most dense folds, gradually moving them to the opposite edge.
- Having assembled the tape in this way, we check the uniformity and density of the resulting pattern, after which we can begin installation. We recommend that you pay attention to the rigidity of the folds when purchasing the tape by pulling it straight in the store. It is better not to purchase a model that is not strong enough, since it will not be able to hold the design properly.
- And the last step is to fix our folds, because an unsecured thread will certainly fall into place, nullifying all our efforts. Having received the desired pattern, we secure the edge with a knot. To prevent the rest of the thread from hanging along the curtain, we wind it around several fingers into a neat skein, the middle of which is tied with the free edge. It turns out something like a thread bow. We can also “reliably” hide it, hiding it from prying eyes, simply by threading the top edge under the top cord, and the bottom edge under the bottom cord.
Not knowing how to properly hang curtains on curtain tape,
many people try to put hooks on the cords. This step is fundamentally wrong, since under the weight of the fabric the threads will begin to sag, thereby completely ruining the appearance of the curtain. Hooks and other fastening elements are threaded only into special fabric pockets, of which there may be several rows.
This device is very convenient because it allows you to adjust the height of the curtain. For example, if you are slightly wrong with the height of the curtain or curtain, you can simply move the hooks to the top row; you can hide the unsightly cornice with the same manipulation, but using the bottom row of pockets. It is better to place the hooks at a distance of 5-6 centimeters, this way you will protect yourself from sagging of the canvas.
Before hanging curtains correctly, you have to take into account many nuances, including how to secure them to the curtain rod. After all, not only the design, but also the functionality of the paintings largely depends on this. Curtains with hooks are one of the most convenient and versatile solutions in this regard. But in order to choose them correctly, you should familiarize yourself with the entire richness of the assortment and find the most suitable option for a particular case.
Plastic hooks for curtain tape are:
With clasps
The most convenient type of hook for curtain tape in terms of functionality. You put hooks on the curtain tape, fasten them, thereby fixing them on the product.

Designer's advice:
- With such hooks for curtain tape, installation and even washing are easier. Hooks can now be put on curtain tape while sitting on the sofa, and not hanging;
- The product can be washed together with the hooks;
- Don't forget to fasten the hook!
Without fasteners
These hooks are less convenient to use, but are also functional. These are mainly Y-shaped hooks. The scheme is the same. We put it on by hand and push it onto the ledge.

Build factor
The gathering factor (GC) is a value that helps determine how much fabric needs to be gathered across the width. Essentially, this is the allowance for the waves and tails, and it determines how magnificent they will be in the end.
The gathering factor depends on the type of folds formed on the curtain fabric
Before you calculate the width of the tulle for the window, you need to find out what the KS will be. To do this you need to know two quantities:
- Length of cornice.
- Braid model.
The width of the footage is calculated using a simple formula:
Amount of fabric = k x curtain rod length
Where k is the assembly (filling) coefficient. For different types of assembly that the braid forms, it will be different:
- Pencil – k = 2.5-3.
- Buffs – k = 1.5 – 2.5.
- “Crow's feet” – k = 2.
- Goblet-shaped, bow-shaped – k = 2.5-3.
Note! The KS must be indicated on the packaging of the curtain tape. Typically the average ratio is 1:2.5. It is suitable for almost any curtain design.
Knowing the CS, all that remains is to calculate the required amount of tissue. If, for example, k = 1.5, and the length of the cornice is 275 cm, then to sew curtains you will need to collect 375 cm (3.75 meters) of fabric (1.5 x 250 cm = 375 cm).
Important. When calculating, it is necessary to add allowances for the side seams. As a rule, add 6 cm, 3 cm for each side seam.
Processing the side cut of the curtain
In our example, to the width of 3.75 m, you also need to add 6 cm for the side seams. The total width of the fabric will be 3 m 81 cm.
