Chair height, GOST standards for different models, important nuances

A chair is a piece of furniture on which it should be equally comfortable to work, relax, and eat. But the issue is not only about comfort; incorrect body position when sitting can provoke diseases of the spine, affect the blood supply to all organs, and cause feelings of pain and fatigue. That is why one of the main criteria is the height of the chair, which must be selected taking into account a number of important points. This concept includes not only the distance from the floor to the upper horizontal, but also the ratio of the height of the seat, armrests, and backrest.

Features of the models

Chairs play the role of functional additions to the central element of the interior - the table. But in order for items to be advantageously and correctly combined with each other, it is necessary to take their choice seriously.

Basically, high-quality and sustainable materials are used to create modern models. This is especially true for chairs that are used to furnish the kitchen. The models are not afraid of temperature influences and perfectly resist the harmful effects of moisture.

In addition, it is worth paying attention to the design of the products. Manufacturers of furniture items never cease to surprise customers with original shapes and unique style solutions. Thanks to the wide variety of models, each buyer has the opportunity to choose options in accordance with their own preferences, and, of course, the features of the interior.

What else is worth considering

Seating furniture has many options. And there are such important aspects as height. When choosing the optimal chair or stool for your health, you should consider all of them that you can work on comfortably for many years.

Kitchen chairs

Factors to consider:

  • backrest tilt and height;
  • seat rigidity;
  • environmental friendliness of materials;
  • reliability of the project.

It is advisable not to lean on the back of the chair, but to support your back solely with your muscles. But if that doesn't work, it's better to sit straight on the flat back of a chair. If the latter is curved, then perhaps someone will like it, but there is nothing useful here.

In a living room

Sitting on a soft chair seat for too long can lead to blood stagnation and enlargement of hemorrhoids. When the seat is firm, the risk of this problem occurring is much lower. If you don't want to buy very hard furniture, it's worth buying a compromise option.

When choosing, you should pay attention to the environmental friendliness of materials. It is better that these are not some harmful synthetic materials, which is not uncommon for cheaper furniture. It is also better not to buy furniture with fabric upholstery, because sometimes microorganisms grow in it over time.

In a private house

Of course, the structure must be strong enough. Although it is not easy to assess the strength of individual elements. You should find out directly in the store how reliable the elements connected to each other are.

Main types

Today there are several types of kitchen chairs. As noted above, models may differ in appearance and design features. Another distinguishing criterion is height.

Also, special attention should be paid to the materials that are used to create furniture:

  • Classic types include wooden models. The material is environmentally friendly, durable and beautiful.

Manufacturers offer models made from both cheap and valuable wood. In this case, the choice depends on your preferences and financial capabilities.

  • Good options for arranging a kitchen are metal . Furniture frames are mainly made from this material. To create the seat, soft options are used, for example, artificial or genuine leather. The main advantages of these models are that they have different shapes and colors.

Particular attention should be paid to metal models with a forged base. These options are ideal for beautiful classic interiors.

  • Plastic chairs are no less popular among buyers . This material has excellent performance properties. Manufacturers present a variety of plastic models, and special attention should be paid to objects whose base imitates glass. They fit perfectly into interiors that need lightness.

  • Models made of rattan will help you decorate your kitchen in country style. These chairs can be used to furnish a summer house.

Examples in the interior

Today, every consumer has the opportunity to choose the ideal computer desk that will fit seamlessly into his home.

It doesn’t matter at all what style the furnishings are in. It can be both an eternal classic and a shocking avant-garde

Today, corner designs of computer desks are very popular. They often combine several different colors at once. For example, the main body can be snow-white, and the drawer doors can be dark chocolate. Such a model will look interesting, even if it has compact dimensions.

If you love minimalistic yet stylish ensembles, then you should look for a simple folding table with a crisp white top and wooden supports. Opposite it, it is recommended to place a small chair of a similar design (with a white back and seat, as well as a wooden frame). Such a simple but stylish tandem will look great against a window with light Roman blinds. As for the wall decoration, it should also be light. You should put a dark laminate on the floor.

Fans of modern and progressive ensembles should look in stores for unusual laptop tables with straight wooden tops and painted metal frames. Such designs can be complemented by angular high chairs with a full-length cover. As for the decoration of walls and floors, such furniture will look harmonious against the background of dark walls with imitation wooden blocks and snow-white carpet.

If you bought a black computer desk (any: corner, straight, trapezoidal), then you should know that you cannot place it in a dark room. It is better to place such a model in a room with light or pale walls (both plain and striped) and fill it with white computer equipment. Lay caramel parquet on the floor. If there is a window behind the table, then it should be covered with light curtains in pleasant colors, for example, soft pink or orange.

A charming desk with free space for a laptop and convenient extensions with cabinets is the perfect solution for a student’s room. For example, an attractive soft beige model with soft green details will find its place in a cozy corner with soft pink walls, a snow-white seamless floor and a light ceiling. Next to such furniture, a plastic chair on wheels and abstract wall images will look organic.

A delicate beige rectangular structure with tall extensions and a slightly curved tabletop will perfectly complement soft blueberry wall trim and rough brown laminate with dark splashes. To advantageously emphasize the shade of the walls, you can choose a metal chair with a purple seat and back, and also place decorative details of similar tones in this area.

A computer desk with a rack can be used not only as a work area, but also to divide space with it. Most often, owners of studio apartments turn to such techniques. For example, a light wooden model with an open shelving can be used to enclose a living room area with a green and yellow sofa. Such furniture will look unusual and fresh against the backdrop of snow-white wallpaper imitating medium-sized brick or stone, as well as a rich chocolate floor finished with a semi-gloss laminate.

You can learn how to make a computer desk with your own hands from the video below.

Height is an important criterion

When choosing chairs for the kitchen or dining room, special attention should be paid to the height of the models. This directly determines how convenient and comfortable the products will be when used. There are certain established standards that you should focus on during the acquisition process:

  • The first important point is the height of the table. The standard indicator is 75 cm. Basically, this number was derived in relation to the average height of an ordinary person - 165 cm. Based on these indicators, you can choose the optimal table height.
  • First you need to determine your height. Afterwards, you need to measure the height of the table. The resulting indicators must be multiplied and divided by 165. For example, if a person’s height is 174 cm and the table height is 75, the optimal furniture option will be 79.1 cm. You can also calculate the indicators for the whole family. To do this, you need to determine the average height of the household.

  • As for the chair, here it is worth focusing on the established GOST standards. The average distance from the top of the table to the seat is 30 cm.
  • You can also use a ready-made formula. If a person’s height is 168 cm, the optimal height is 45 cm. With indicators from 162 to 168, you will need a chair of approximately 42-43 cm. If a person’s height is below 162 cm, you need to choose furniture with a height of 40 cm.
  • Calculating the required indicators is quite simple. For example, a chair with a height of 34.1 cm is suitable for a person with a height of 172 cm. To do this, you need to subtract 45 cm from 79.1 cm.
  • A good choice for a family of several people of different heights would be adjustable furniture. The height can be increased or decreased if desired. You can adjust the indicators using a simple mechanism.
  • It is worth noting that experts have identified the so-called gold standard. In this case, the height of the furniture from the floor level should be at least 80-90 cm. The optimal indicators for the backrest are 40-50 cm. The height from the floor to the seat should be at least 40-45 cm. It is worth choosing a chair with a depth of 50-55 cm .

Design and mechanism

Any bar stool consists of one or more legs, a seat and a footrest. One leg is most often found in height-adjustable products. This support is equipped with a powerful and wide base, ensuring the reliability and stability of the chair. Solid models have three or four legs.

They are characterized by increased strength and long service life. The design must include stands - you can comfortably place your legs on them so that they do not hang without support, because in this position it is uncomfortable to sit, and especially to eat. The thrust element is connected to the legs of the chair or seat, becoming one with it.

There are bar stools with seats of various shapes: round, triangular, square - it all depends on the personal preferences of the owner. Some designs have a backrest, others do not. Here you should take into account the frequency of use of the furniture and the need to move it under the counter. If chairs and a counter play the role of a full-fledged dining area, then it is better to give preference to products with a back and armrests. Folding models are suitable for a small kitchen - they take up minimal space, are easy to use, but their disadvantage is their fragility.

In adjustable chairs, the most common lifting mechanism is pneumatic (gas lift). The system is a cylinder with gas - a piston acts on it, which leads to compression of the spring and lowering of the seat. Shock absorbers in gas lift are divided into short, medium and high. How high the chair rises depends on their size.

When choosing bar stools with a gas lift system, you should remember that:

  • Almost all models have a maximum load of 100 kg;
  • Should the products be used at temperatures above 6 C?;
  • It is necessary to adjust the height only when no one is sitting on the chair;
  • During daily use of products, the mechanism must undergo annual checks for breakdowns.

What is the height according to GOST?

According to the state standard, the dimensions of a traditional stool are as follows: the side of the seat is at least 30-32 cm, the height from the floor to the surface of the seat is 42-48 cm. At the same time, the table at which they sit on the stool is also of a standard height - 72-78 cm.

But tables can be higher, for example, bar counters; their height ranges from 85 to 130 cm . In these cases, stools must be selected in such a way that the difference in height between the table and stool is approximately 35-40 cm.

If the height of the table is, say, 90 cm, then the height of the stool should be about 55 cm; if the height of the table is about 1 m, the height of the chair is correspondingly approximately 60 cm.

It is important to note that if the height of the stool is more than 50 cm, foot bars must be attached to its legs, and the distance from the cross bar to the seat of the stool must correspond to the standard height of chairs of 42-48 cm.

Children have their own standards:

  • with a child’s height up to 1.16 m, the table height is 46, and the stools are 26 cm;
  • with a height of 1.20 m - 53 and 31 cm, respectively;
  • with a height of 1.40 m - table 59, chair 35 cm;
  • with a height of 1.50 m - 64 and 38.

The importance of dimensions when choosing furniture

First of all, you should decide whether the furniture is being purchased for a specific person (for example, for a child’s desk or for a theater living room). If yes, then it is his build that should be taken into account. If the chair will be used by different people, the average parameters are taken into account. In this case, not only the height of a person matters, but also the length of his legs, the upper half of his body, the height and design of the table.

Incorrectly selected dimensions of a chair can cause pain in the spine, blurred vision, and rapid fatigue while sitting on it. If the legs do not reach the floor, the femoral arteries, which supply blood to the lower extremities, are compressed. As a result, a person experiences numbness in the legs, and subsequently has difficulty walking. A seat set too high causes the person sitting to slouch and bend his spine so as to bring his eyes closer to the table.

If, on the contrary, the seat is too low, then the person’s position forces the back muscles to be in constant tension, raising the body as high as possible.

Rules for choosing by height

The standard sizes of stools are designed for an average human height of 1.65 m. These sizes are clearly not suitable for tall people and children. There is a single formula by which you can calculate the required height of a stool for an individual:

(P* 75/ 165) – 35

where P is the individual height of a person in centimeters, 75 is the standard height of a table, 165 is the average height of a person in centimeters, 35 is the difference between the height of a table and a stool.

But for a family where several people live, including children, this formula needs to be slightly modified.

Instead of the standard average value of 165, the arithmetic mean of the heights of all family members is taken.

If all these calculations are tedious and complicated, here are some tips for choosing:

  • when a person sits on a stool, his feet should be free on the floor, and his knees should be bent exactly at an angle of 90 degrees;
  • the distance between the knees and the table top should be about 10-15 cm;
  • The front edge of the stool should not put pressure on the lower thigh under the knees.

Correct body position on a chair

The ideal parameters when sitting in a chair are the following parameters:

  • the tabletop is at a distance of 30 cm from the eyes;
  • your knees should be bent at a right angle and your feet should be flat on the floor, your knees should be higher than your pelvis;
  • there should be support in the lumbar region so that the muscles are not in a state of tension;
  • the depth of the seat should ensure that there is no pressure under the knees;
  • the distance from the knees inside the tabletop should be at least 10-15 cm;
  • hands resting on the tabletop should not be raised.

In order not to clutter your workspace and not strain your eyes when looking for the items you need, the table should be at least 50 cm wide.

When sitting, the upper body should not lean forward or backward. It is best when the axis of the backrest is at right angles to the seat. However, when feeling tired, a person should be able to lean on their back to rest.

Models for the kitchen

Kitchen chairs can be of various shapes and colors. They are made of wood, metal, plastic and even glass.

Don't forget that kitchen items often get dirty, and if you have fabric upholstery, it will deteriorate over time, so it's better to consider more practical options.

The height of kitchen chairs should correspond to the height of the table. This is an important indicator of comfort, and although many sellers may assure you that they are all the same, in reality this is far from the case.

In accordance with standard GOST indicators (for a table 72-78 cm), dimensions may vary:

  • The required height of the object from the base of the floor to the top of the back is 800-900 mm;
  • The size from the floor to the seat is in the range of 400-450 mm;
  • The height of the part on which you lean must be at least 450 mm;
  • The width of the back and seat is from 350 mm, and the depth is 500-550 mm.

For bar counters, the chair height will be different. Here you also need to consider the level of the surface at which you will sit.

Depending on this, the size from the tile to the seat will vary between 750 and 850 mm. The width of the seating surface should start at 460 mm, and the depth at 320 mm. The tilt radius will be 450 mm for standard models and 220 mm for lumbar models.

In bar models, a footstool for support will not be a superfluous accessory. If your kitchen countertop height is 90 cm, then the bar seating model will be 65 cm.

Nowadays, both tables and chairs can be made to order. The master will take into account all the individual characteristics of the customer’s physique: he will measure height, weight, lower leg and hip part of the body.

Such chairs will not only make you feel comfortable, but will also protect your spine from scoliosis.

Stool structure

According to the encyclopedia's definition, a stool is a seat designed for one person, without a back or armrests, consisting of the seat itself, 3 or 4 legs, and possibly crossbars under the seat and between the legs (with drawers and legs). Such chairs are made of wood, metal, plastic, plywood, and depending on the purpose and model, sometimes they use foam rubber or some other sealant, artificial and natural leather, fur or fabric for the seat.

Banquet products

Tables and chairs of this type are more comfortable than ordinary kitchen ones. Typically, restaurants use half-chairs or chairs with armrests. This creates more convenience and comfort, but takes up less space than when placed in chairs.

This also allows you to save space in the hall and seat more people. However, it must be remembered that the width of one seat must be at least 500 mm in order for a person to feel comfortable at the table.

Restaurant models can have an inclined back, which allows you to take a more relaxed posture and facilitates communication. Also, such chairs are wider, deeper, higher than standard options. At the same time, do not forget about the convenience of the waiters. To do this, the height of the object should not exceed 1000 mm.

Office chairs

When choosing a work chair, you need to know that the required chair height for eating and working differs. Most modern models have the ability to adjust the height and depth of the seat and the position of the back, but there are models with four legs with the back strongly tilted back. Most people are not comfortable in this position.

It is not comfortable to constantly be at your desk, “lounging”, and if you straighten up and sit without support, then by the end of the working day your back will hurt a lot.

SanPiN recommends the following standard when choosing the right chairs for subordinates:

  • The width and depth of the seat should start from 400 mm;
  • The seat should have height adjustment in the region of 400-450 mm, the tilt is measured in degrees: forward 15, and backward 5;
  • The front of the seat should be rounded;
  • It is necessary that the backrest has values from 300 to 380 mm, its angle of inclination should be close to 30 degrees;
  • It is recommended to choose a minimum length of armrests of 250-260 mm, a width of about 60 mm;
  • The armrests should also be adjustable in height and width.

Showing concern for your charges, choose models made from natural fabrics so that your back does not sweat in hot weather, and with headrests so that you can relax your neck muscles from time to time. All this will affect the quality of work of employees

Chair parameters

For example, if the height of the table is 720-750 mm, then the height of the seat of the chair should be 430-450 mm. It is possible to reduce the height of the working surface of the table to 680 mm (for working with a keyboard or typewriter).

For seats, the width at the widest part of the chairs should be at least 360 mm; if the chair is a work chair, then the entire width is 400 mm. When using backrests with curvature in furniture, the radius of curvature should be 450 mm for regular full-size backrests (their height is up to 320 mm), and 220 mm for lumbar backrests (their height exceeds 320 mm).

Standard standards

In Russia there is a state standard. He regulates the size of the furniture. According to GOST, the following dimensions are considered acceptable:

  • seat depth – 36–45 cm, working chair – 40–50 cm;
  • distance from the backrest to the seat – 16.5–20 cm;
  • The width of the seat is 36–45 cm, the width of the working chair is 40–50 cm.

Manufacturers take into account the standards. In stores you can find various models with both exact and average indicators. For families, it is better to choose adjustable models. The recommended length from floor to seat depends on the person’s height:

  • low – 40 cm;
  • average – 43 cm;
  • high – 45 cm.

The total length of a standard product cannot exceed 90 cm. At the same time, the distance from the floor to the seat should be up to 45 cm. The minimum width of the backrest is from 35, and the depth is up to 55 cm. A standard model for a user of average height should have a length of 75 cm.

If the product is oriented in all respects, but is not suitable for height, discomfort will overtake the owner within the first hour of use. The size of the chair directly affects your well-being and performance.

Stools

The height of the stool is important for proper body position. Modern manufacturers are striving to increase dimensions to make models more versatile. Standard indicators are:

  • seat parameters – from 32 cm;
  • leg length – from 50 cm;
  • the distance from the bar to the seat is from 38 cm.

Distinctive features of growing chairs, important selection criteria

There are products up to 48 cm in length. Some manufacturers make different footrests on each side of the stool so that the piece of furniture is suitable for family members of any height. The main thing is that it matches the size of the table.

Chairs with backs

The height of kitchen chairs is also regulated by GOST. Such models are located in bedrooms, dining area, living room. Standard sizes are:

  • total height – up to 90 cm;
  • distance to the seat – from 40 to 45 cm;
  • back length – from 45 cm.

For public institutions, the backrests are increased to 60 cm. They are made in compliance with the anatomical shape of the back. The curve follows the natural position of the spine in a relaxed state.

Adjustable chairs

The dimensions of the office chair are adjustable. It should be suitable for workers of any height. Now such models are used not only at work, but also at home as a computer chair. The following dimensions are important:

  • the distance from the seat to the floor is adjustable from 46 to 60 cm;
  • back – at least 45 cm;
  • seat width – at least 48 cm.

The correct height ensures comfortable sitting for a long time. This product adapts to almost any height. Adjustable models can be kitchen, bar, children's, medical, orthopedic, office and even designer models.

Bar

Such chairs do not fit into the state standard. They have different seat heights, minimum backrest and leg lengths. So, the length reaches 85 centimeters, the width – up to 46, and the depth – up to 32. When choosing such a model, only its compliance with the rack is taken into account.

Stages of making chair seats with your own hands, methods of fastening

Children's models

Children's furniture options can be orthopedic, computer and desk. Selection is carried out based on the following criteria:

AgeTable height, cmChair height, cm
Babies up to a meter tall4022
Schoolchildren under 7 years old5232
Children under 125735
Teenagers7646

Dimensions are selected according to the age and build of the child. Unlike adult models, giving preference to the optimal option is not the best solution. It is more rational to purchase a model for a specific child or teenager.

Chair back tilt

Contents ✓

It is no coincidence that the height of a normal kitchen work table is 900 mm, and the correct tilt angle of the back of dining chairs is 0-5 ° back. These and other similar standards were invented almost every year ago by furniture manufacturers and designers.

Unfortunately, for most hobby carpenters, this vital information is not always available in an easy-to-understand form. We would like to change things up and summarize for you the basic facts on this topic.

As designer Louis Sullivan put it, “form describes function,” and this design principle is especially important when designing seating furniture. Before you consider the shape—that is, the style, scale (or relationship to surrounding objects), wood species, and construction technique—you need to make sure that the human body will feel comfortable on the piece of furniture.

Average chair sizes

The design of a comfortable chair is directly proportional to the size and shape of the person who will sit in it. Therefore, you should focus on this table only if the future owner of the chair is proportional to the average person. You may need to resize slightly based on different requests - this is normal.

If you prefer to place the cushion on the seat, adjust the size to suit the size of the cushion as it compresses under the weight of the person sitting. In practice, you can simply reduce the height of seat A by half the thickness of the cushion.

REQUIRED DIMENSIONS FOR A COMFORTABLE SEAT

The seat is everything

1. To ensure that the seated person's knees are comfortably bent at an angle of 90–100° and their feet rest on the floor, set the seat at a height of 405–455 mm from the floor. When determining the height of an upholstered seat with a soft cushion, consider the compressed thickness by subtracting half the thickness of the cushion from the total height of the seat from the floor.

2. To leave free space between the front edge of the seat and the legs of the seated person, make the seat 380–450 mm deep.

How to choose an office chair?

Jens Kapelmann, head of sales for Dauphin, one of Germany's largest chair manufacturers, gives advice on how to choose a good work chair for minimal money. Ask the seller the following questions:

  1. Does the chair have a synchro mechanism? This is when the seat and backrest synchronously and automatically repeat the movements of the seated person: forward, backward, sideways. Thus, without losing contact of the spine with the back of the chair, the person is in active movement, the spine is relaxed, and there is no unnecessary tension on the muscles. This is the main thing. Without a synchronizing mechanism, a chair is not a chair, but a stool with a backrest.
  2. Is there an adjustable backrest resistance? Each person has a different weight, so the different forces that we put on the back of the chair must be proportionately compensated by its resistance. Otherwise, fragile little girls will sit like soldiers, unable to overcome their backrest. And large men are always in a relaxed reclining position, which is not very well received by their superiors. It’s good when you find a balance: the back should tilt relatively easily - but not so much that it “flies away”. The adjustment can be mechanical or automatic.
  1. Is there seat depth adjustment? According to the rules of ergonomics, there should be a distance from the edge of the seat to the inner bend of the knee the width of your palm. If it is less, you “slide” out of the chair. If it is larger, you drown in it, causing your leg muscles to strain unnecessarily.

  1. Is there a negative seat angle? And, at the same time, backrests, less than 90 degrees - this is when the backrest, following the person sitting, seems to fall towards the table. A negative seat tilt is needed in order to get rid of excess pressure on the inner thigh, due to which the blood flow in this place is pinched and the muscles do not receive proper nutrition and oxygen. This happens when you are forced to work for a long time in a position inclined towards the table (writing with a pen, peering at the data on the monitor). Require a negative slope!
  2. Are there armrests? When you want to save money, the first thing you get rid of in your chair is the armrests. And this is a mistake. The armrests are aligned with the tabletop, so your wrist, forearm and hand on the keyboard (or with a pen) are always at the same level. The arm (including the shoulders) is always relaxed. And that's great. There are no armrests - and all day long your muscles do nothing but support your arms, forcing your shoulders to rise higher and higher, leading to slouching and increased tension in the shoulder girdle. The ability to adjust their height and width is important in armrests. All sorts of 3D and other mechanisms are from the evil one.
  1. Is the back height adjustable? More precisely the height of the lumbar support. It's good if yes. The lumbar support ensures the tightest contact of the back of the chair with the point of greatest curvature of the spine. It’s bad when the lumbar support rests on the buttocks or, on the contrary, almost on the shoulder blades. The tighter the contact, the more relaxed the sitting posture. But, in fact, the height of the backrest does not play an ergonomic role. This is purely a symbol of the status and importance of the person sitting, nothing more.

All. The minimum program has been completed. The remaining options are a matter of subjective wishes and available budgets.

And finally, a few comments:

— The mesh back is not inferior in ergonomics to a regular back upholstered in fabric. The mesh is more convenient in the summer - it allows air to pass through well and is ventilated.

— The headrest is a completely empty device. It has no ergonomic role.

— The plastic base of the chair is not inferior in its characteristics to the metal one. Modern plastic in chairs is special, highly durable. It can easily serve for 10 years or more, and is not particularly susceptible to any serious damage.

— When choosing a work chair, it would be good to pay attention to the fabric with which it is upholstered. The main characteristic of fabric is its abrasion and wear resistance index. It is expressed in Martindales. For an office chair this index must be at least 80 000.

— It’s worth clarifying the type of wheels. They are available for hard floors (with soft felt attachments so as not to damage the floor) and, on the contrary, for soft floors (with plastic attachments so that they glide better on carpeting).

— The normal warranty for a work chair is 5 years. If they give less, it’s a reason to think about it.

Desk height

It is better to select the height of the desktop and computer desk individually. If several people will work at the same table, we recommend focusing on the tallest one. For those who are shorter, you can use a chair with height adjustment or add a pillow when working. So that the height remains optimal. See the table below for the ratio of height, table and chair height.
