Pragmatics of choice
All colors differ not only in color range, but also in tone. In some pairs this difference is more noticeable, in others it is more smoothed out, but the combination of black and white is a pair with the maximum degree of contrast. These two colors contrast in both color and tone. And at the same time, despite such opposition, they represent an example of a harmonious combination of colors. Black and white are yin and yang, fire and water, winter and summer. How does a black and white ceiling change the space of a room? Let's figure it out. When using black and white stretch ceilings, you should not add another bright color to the interior of the apartment (see photo). There is a design rule: when using contrasting colors in interior design, you should refuse to add other colors. Three bright colors are too much. So a room with black and white ceilings should be made in a monochrome color scheme, that is, no bright pillows, paintings, or books should be present. The same can be said about furniture and wall and floor decoration. The maximum that can be added to dilute the colors is beige colors in the decor. This does not mean that the floor or walls should be the same black or white; you can choose different shades of gray. By playing with halftones, you can emphasize or hide some interior details.

Where to use?
We can say that black and white stretch ceilings are a matter of taste; some people like them, others don’t. In fact, everything is somewhat different. Reasonable design of the room and the use of such ceiling colors in the place will please everyone. It remains to understand where such suspended ceilings can be used. First, let's figure out what effect the combination of black and white has on a person, and then we can already say where it is appropriate to use black and white stretch ceilings, as in the photo.

Black and white in a pair set the mood for peace, contemplation, and reflection. These are the colors of intellectuals, people living in harmony with themselves and the world around them, as well as connoisseurs of everything beautiful and aristocratic. That is why black and white stretch ceilings should be used where you plan to meet people, hold conversations, and reflect. Such places include classrooms, living rooms, offices. Black and white suspended ceilings in the interior of the kitchen and bedroom (see photo) are appropriate if they support the overall style of the room. Such canvases on the ceiling will allow you to relax and unwind. You should not use black and white color combinations in the nursery. It is better for children not to see gloomy dark colors in the decor of the room at all; their psyche is not yet mature enough. For the normal emotional development of a child, the presence of different colors is important, so the nursery can be multi-colored.

Application of black and white ceilings
Room | Features of using black and white ceilings | Designer tips for decorating a room |
Kitchen | If your kitchen is designed in high-tech style and has sufficient dimensions, you can use black and white stretch ceilings (see photo) | The design of the top of the kitchen in black and white colors is very popular. At the same time, in the interior of the room it is necessary to balance all the color spots of the equipment, decoration and furniture in the kitchen |
Bath | Since this room is small in size, you should not use black in large quantities in the bathroom. There should be more white in the ceiling design | To balance the ceiling and compensate for the lack of black color, you can use one-color printing on the panel |
Living room | The interior of a living room with a black and white ceiling should be done in monochrome. The ceiling helps highlight individual areas of the room | Since the ceiling will be the center of the composition of the room, it can be decorated with printing or painting. A black, discreet pattern on a white canvas and the same white pattern on a black one look beautiful. It will transform the living room |
Study or office | The rigor and business style of this room is perfectly emphasized by black and white stretch ceilings (see photo) | The use of velvet black stretch fabric and a white glossy panel will add even more charm and aristocracy to the room |
Decor
In some cases, even a simple black surface on the ceiling looks elegant and beautiful, but this happens quite rarely; as a rule, the gloomy upper part of the room still needs some kind of addition so as not to upset the owners and guests.
In fact, there are only two ways to radically change the perception of a black ceiling, and both involve, of course, lighting:
The first way is to create a light visual effect, most often simulating the night sky.
This solution seems simply fascinating, since people of a romantic nature tend to stare at the stars for hours.
In some cases, you can make the sky look static by simply installing small recessed lights directly into the black interior of the ceiling, but a moving sky will look even more impressive.”
This effect can only be achieved with the help of a special projector, and although such pleasure is not cheap, the result will amaze the imagination.
The second method assumes the presence of light sources that are not directly connected to the ceiling. This can be either a pendant chandelier or spotlights mounted on the walls. The point of the effect is to direct the rays of light onto a glossy black ceiling, in which they will be reflected, demonstrating the play of glare.
Such effects are noticeable only in relatively dark rooms, but it still makes sense to opt for such a solution, if only for the sake of a romantic atmosphere in the dark.
Black and white stretch ceilings photo: design and choice of style
First of all, it is worth noting that black and white stretch ceilings, no matter what style they are made in, allow you to create functional zoning of the room. The ceilings themselves can be one- or two-level, with or without photo printing.
The unlimited possibilities that types of fabric and glossy stretch fabrics give us allow us to significantly diversify the design of black and white stretch ceilings:
- White glossy stretch ceilings in combination with black velvet or satin fabrics allow you to create single-level ceilings that will zone the room no worse than their two-level counterparts. However, they will have one advantage: such ceilings can be successfully used in low rooms, while 2-level structures have a height limit.
- Two-level black and white stretch ceilings (you can see the photo below) can be made using fabrics of the same texture or with different textures. For example, on the first level there will be a glossy ceiling made of PVC film, and on the second level there will be a matte fabric ceiling. This combination of canvases can be emphasized by the competent use of lighting fixtures. The design is suitable for spacious, high rooms.
- Traditional “starry sky” ceilings can also be designed in black and white. In this case, the lower ceiling along the perimeter of the room is made of white matte fabric, and the second ceiling in the center is made of black translucent film, behind which fiber optic threads or LEDs are hidden to create a “starry sky” effect.
- The design of such ceilings with images is no less popular. As mentioned above, black and white stretch ceilings with a pattern printed on one of them look very original (see photo). It is worth mentioning that the design must be black or white, no other colors should be used. You can also use a special type of printing – 3-D printing. The choice of image depends on your imagination.

Spotlights
There are a huge number of types of spotlights on the market, of different types, sizes and styles.
Chandelier with spotlights
The chandelier plays the role of the main light, and the lamps act as additional light.
Illuminated starry sky
It will immerse us in the atmosphere of space.
Perimeter lighting
Create a “floating ceiling” effect.
LED strip lighting from inside
Modern technologies make it possible to integrate lighting into the ceiling, making it mysterious and extraordinary.

This is a classic option for large rooms.
Popular manufacturers
Shadow ceilings are a relatively new type of tension structures. Therefore, the companies that were the first to offer their products are still the most popular.
The imported profile has a high cost, therefore, today domestic manufacturers are leading the market:
AstamGroup (Moscow)
The company produces EuroCrab profiles. The set includes corner joining elements, “walking” connecting elements for straight or corner joining;
FlexiPro (Republic of Belarus)
The company began production of EuroFlexi profiles almost immediately after Astam, in 2006.
The baguette from both companies has similar shapes and sizes. For installers, it makes no fundamental difference which one to work with (although here there may be certain habits and preferences).
Which baguette should I choose?
A special type of baguette is used to attach the shade cloth. There are plastic and metal profiles on sale. The former are used for installing small panels that do not create a large load. The second (aluminum) are used to install ceilings of a large area with a significant weight of the canvas.
In addition, there are profiles for installing one- and two-level suspended ceilings. They allow you to design the transition areas of planes with maximum accuracy and eliminate the need for additional camouflage elements.
There are three main varieties on the market today:
EuroKraab
AirKraab
Euro Flexy
These types of baguettes have an almost common profile shape with minor differences. For example, the EuroCrab and EuroFlex designs are almost identical.
The difference between them lies in the geometric shape of the section - the first type is made in clear outlines with right angles between all junctions.
The second has smoothed corners and a connecting element slightly beveled towards the wall. This allows the gap width to be reduced, which is suitable for relatively small spaces.
AeroCrab is a baguette equipped with perforations along the entire length of the shelf. This is a very practical profile that allows for ventilation of the ceiling space behind the canvas. The film does not sag or sway when the doors are opened.
In addition, the formation of condensation, which falls on the ceiling slab due to insufficient insulation, stops. It drips onto the film, which can short out fixtures and place unwanted stress on the film.
In addition to wall types of baguette, ceiling profiles can be used to create shadow ceilings. They are designed for mounting floating tension fabrics and are equipped with a special type of connection that allows you to make a shelf for hidden installation of lighting.
However, this profile can also be used for shadow ceilings. It is convenient if fastening to walls is undesirable for some reason (for example, in houses made of gas or foam concrete, where the walls do not hold fastening elements well).
Its only drawback is the small gap between the canvas and the ceiling slab, which does not allow hiding ventilation pipes, wiring or other engineering systems and communications.
Positive qualities of a tension structure
Elegant pattern suitable for the bedroom
First you need to understand what a suspended ceiling is and what its advantages are. In simple words, it is a canvas, seamless (fabric) or with an inconspicuous welded seam (PVC), secured using a special profile installed around the perimeter of the room at a selected height.
In essence, this is a suspended structure that has all the corresponding positive properties:
- There is no need to prepare the base before installation;
- You can choose any installation height;
- You can effectively disguise any communications - pipes, electrical wiring, ventilation equipment;
- The result is a perfectly smooth coating that is not subject to deformation over time;
- You can install built-in lighting;
- Installation takes place in a short time.
Two-level design in the kitchen
Important! The caveat is that you won’t be able to make and install the tension fabric yourself. This requires special equipment and professional skills.
Option for a small living room
In addition, the tension fabric has specific qualities, which distinguishes them from the no less common plasterboard suspended structure:
- PVC stretch fabric is durable, but you should not try to install it in an unheated room - the film will collapse. For such conditions, fabric sheets are chosen;
- The canvas is mounted ready-made and does not require further finishing;
- You can choose the texture and color of the canvas to suit any interior;
Zoning option
- PVC sheets have unique moisture-resistant qualities and strength, which allows you to save rooms from flooding from above - this is the most important quality that none of the existing methods of ceiling finishing can boast of;
- Glossy canvases have the highest degree of reflection, almost mirror-like;
It is necessary to choose the right balance between contrasting colors
Advice! This would not be the best choice for a bedroom, especially in contrasting black and white. It is better to choose a fabric canvas on which the contrast will not look so active.
- When installing the tension fabric, there is practically no debris left, and even less dirt. However, it should be taken into account that a small amount of dust will appear as a result of drilling the walls when attaching the profile;
- Installation occurs quickly, according to a proven scheme, so there is no need to empty the room of furniture - the whole process will take from 30 to 60 minutes;
A pattern on a glossy canvas would be appropriate in the living room
- The tension fabric has a long service life - up to 15 years, but this is not the limit if the fabric is properly cared for. Thus, PVC sheets cannot be cleaned using hard brushes and products containing abrasives. Fabrics are resistant to moisture and can only be cleaned dry;
Important! PVC fabric can be easily damaged by a sharp object, so it is better to remove jewelry - rings and bracelets.
Bedroom decoration
- The stretch fabric has heat and sound insulation properties. Fabric fabrics “breathe” and can therefore be safely used in bedrooms and children’s rooms;
- It is customary to say that stretch fabric is more expensive than other finishing methods, but if you consider that installing a plasterboard ceiling will require additional costs - hangers and profiles, primer, putty and finishing material, as well as additional time, then with tension fabrics, at least there is less hassle, and the price may turn out to be the same.
Main stages of installation
There is no fundamental difference between the method of installing shadow ceilings and the general technology.
The work consists of the following stages:
- marking walls and ceilings, installing embedded parts for lamps. Installation of wiring, installation of all hidden communications, elements of engineering systems;
- installation of profiles according to pre-set marks. Here it is necessary to constantly check the horizontal position and accuracy of installation;
- installation of tension fabric, lamps and other ceiling design elements.
These actions do not create any particular difficulty; for experienced installers they are a normal process.
The only point worth paying attention to is the pre-treatment of the edges of the baguette in contact with the film. Sometimes they have sharp protrusions and burrs. It is recommended to process them to prevent the fabric from breaking when tensioned.
