Temperature changes, steam, grease splashes - this is just a small list of “problems” that kitchen furniture faces. It is obvious that not every material of painted facades (regardless of the type of dye used for painting) will withstand such harsh conditions of use. The massif quickly loses its shape and dries out. Metal surfaces require constant maintenance. MDF is considered optimal for purchase, characterized by a low price and high performance properties of the front panels of the headset.
Which ones should you choose?
Each of the facade options proposed above has its own disadvantages and advantages. In general, thanks to modern production technologies, they all work perfectly in the kitchen, but there are nuances. For example, painted facades, unlike film ones, cannot have a wood structure or pattern, but we have the opportunity to give them absolutely any color. The disadvantage of plastic facades is that milling cannot be done on such facades. At the same time, there is a definite plus: they can withstand temperatures up to 240 degrees Celsius (according to some experiments, even more).
Solid wood facades are a very individual product that is not suitable for everyone. Firstly, they are quite expensive compared to all other options. Secondly, they require proper conscious care. But with good care they will last in the kitchen for up to 50 years, and possibly longer.
Advantages of kitchen facades made of MDF
The main quality of furniture made from such material is its environmental friendliness. When heated, it does not release toxins or unpleasant odors that can harm human health. The specific composition of fiberboards protects the headset panels from rotting. Resistant to pathogens and fungi, they provide all the necessary conditions to maintain room hygiene.
Among the important operational properties of MDF facades are the following:
- increased strength;
- low degree of wear;
- environmental safety;
- resistance to temperature changes;
- resistance to moisture.
They can serve up to 20 years, maintaining their shape, quality and aesthetics. The price of furniture panels made of fibreboard is significantly lower than for analogues made of wood. Moreover, the latter indicator does not in any way affect the design restrictions. Taking MDF as a basis, you can implement a variety of solutions in kitchen interior design (glossy, matte effect, metallic, imitation wood, stone, etc., etc.).
Production of MDF with paint and MDF with film
The film is applied to MDF facades using a press, creating high temperature and vacuum. Paint is applied under normal conditions: at “room” temperature, with existing atmospheric pressure. First, the surface of the MDF facade is coated with a primer. Next, a special enamel is applied. If necessary, additional layers of enamel are applied and the façade is varnished.
The properties of furniture facades also depend on coating technologies.
Painted MDF
Products made from MDF are given unusual and attractive shapes, which are painted in a large palette of colors and shades. However, one must understand that in addition to the advantages of this material, there are also disadvantages.
Advantages of painted MDF facades:
- There is full compliance of this material with safety regulations . They do not emit harmful volatile substances. Thanks to this, there are no restrictions on its use in any type of premises.
- Excellent characteristics are complemented by exceptional decorative qualities . The palette of colors for coloring facades is truly inexhaustible.
- The surface is easily washed from dirt and grease stains.
- The density of the paint coating does not allow the surface to absorb any odors.
- Due to its lighter weight relative to wood, such furniture is easy to move .
- A wide variety of shapes of painted facades (straight, rounded, curved, concave).
Disadvantages of painted MDF:
- The cost of furniture made from this material exceeds the price of sets with a film coating.
- Fingerprints are easily imprinted on the painted surface.
- After certain periods of time, the enamel fades.
- The paint becomes cracked due to mechanical stress.

Where to buy furniture fronts inexpensively?
Furniture facades made to order are not a cheap pleasure. But they are not bought often. If they want to save money, customers order facades made of chipboard, not taking into account that the service life of such facades is relatively short, wear resistance is practically absent, and the material is much less environmentally friendly compared to MDF.
To order inexpensive furniture facades, pay attention to the availability of equipment in the company’s production shops. Very often, furniture facades are offered by companies that are intermediaries. As a result, prices for goods are offered higher than in the manufacturing company.
Furniture production company “SV” has been manufacturing furniture facades in St. Petersburg for several years now. What is the difference between film and painted MDF?
The presence of some specific features of coatings allows for a comparative analysis:
- The price of film is lower than that of paint . Therefore, film facades will always be cheaper.
- The film withstands mechanical stress more easily . It doesn't scratch as easily as people think. The painted surface loses in this regard. But scratches on it are easily repaired, but not on film.
- Almost any cleaning products are suitable for cleaning film-coated surfaces . Whereas paint requires special care.
- When covering a facade with paint, it is possible to create smooth color transitions and combine different shades . It's almost impossible to do this with film.

Which MDF is better to use for what?
There is no clear answer to this question, as it depends on several factors . Firstly, it is necessary to clarify under what conditions the furniture will be used . Secondly, the financial capabilities of the buyer . Thirdly, find out the taste inclinations of the future user.
If we are talking about furniture for the kitchen, bathroom or toilet, then it is better to give preference to painted MDF. Such panels withstand even prolonged exposure to moisture. In addition, the rich color spectrum allows you to create an appropriate atmosphere in these rooms.
For hallways and rooms exposed to direct sunlight, it is recommended to use a film coating. It withstands mechanical stress well, which is very important for the hallway. In sunny rooms, such panels will not fade over time. For the same reason, they should be used on balconies and loggias.
Furniture for the hall should look solemn and elegant, which means it is worth buying something that is made of painted solid wood. This statement applies to both recreation areas and sleeping areas. If you choose a film option, then only from well-known manufacturers and matte. In this case, laminated MDF is very difficult to distinguish from painted MDF.

Enamel kitchens
Kitchens made of MDF with enamel appeared on the furniture market relatively recently, but have already become popular among consumers. They are manufactured using a unique technology that allows us to produce stylish, durable, inexpensive kitchen furniture.
Such furniture structures are made from MDF - a high-quality material that surpasses the previously common chipboard in its characteristics. The finishing of MDF facades is made of enamel, thanks to which the cabinets acquire a unique design.
The following types of enamel coating are used:
- glossy;
- matte;
- metallic;
- chameleon.
The use of this manufacturing technology provides wide design possibilities. The shape of the facades can be any - smooth, rounded, wavy. You can order a small pattern or an individual design to be applied to the facades.
Kitchens with PVC film.
Film facades are created on the basis of MDF. After special processing of the fiberboard, PVC is applied to its surface. This is a fairly durable material with a thickness of 0.3-0.5 millimeters. When heated, the film becomes plastic, which allows it to be laid evenly on the slabs.
Film facades have many advantages. The main one is price. Such kitchens are much cheaper compared to sets with other finishing options. In addition, PVC facades:
There are many options for facade design. For example, you can create a film coating with a patina, as implemented in the Aurora kitchen. The variety of colors and textures is very large, so it is possible to realize any design idea.
PVC facades also have disadvantages. The main ones:
In general, given the low cost of such kitchens, the disadvantages are not so significant.
Manufacturing technology
Kitchens with enamel facades are manufactured in stages. The basis for them is MDF boards with a thickness of 16 to 25 mm. Panels of required shapes and sizes are made from slabs. After this, a foam filler is applied to the surface - a special material that allows air to be removed from it.
After drying, excess filler is removed from the surface and sanded, preparing for painting. Then it is coated with an insulator, dried and sanded again, after which a layer of primer is applied to it. Waterproof varnish can be used as a primer, which does not allow the panels to absorb moisture and thereby extends the service life of the furniture being manufactured. When the primer dries, the surface is sanded again.
When the slabs are completely prepared, they proceed to applying an enamel coating to them. The dye is applied in layers. When the painted surface becomes dry, it is varnished and then thoroughly polished.
A similar technology is used in car painting. Its use not only ensures high quality and durability of the enamel layer, but also makes it possible to choose the surface texture and create various unique effects on it, for example, “vintage”.
Some interesting facts
- The enamel coating can be applied to the surface of MDF in 4-8 layers. The quality of manufacturing and operational characteristics of facades depend on their quantity. The more layers are applied, the more durable and wear-resistant the finished furniture will be.
- If desired, a kitchen with enamel facades can be repainted in a different color, significantly extending its service life.
- Belarusian kitchens made of MDF with enamel, combining excellent quality with an affordable price, are especially popular on the furniture market.
