How to make furniture from pallets with your own hands - a chair from pallets
You can also make a chair from a pallet for the coffee table. You will need a pallet and tools the same as those used to make the table:
- drill

- tassels
- First you need to divide the pallet into two halves. You need to cut along the board, which is located in the middle. Then each of the two halves must be cut into two more parts. You will get four parts, two of which will serve as armrests.
- Then you need to sand all parts of the future chair. This can be done with a drill with a special brush or sandpaper.
- Now you need to select a part that will serve as a backrest and make a cut along one side so that it can be installed at an angle and be comfortable to sit on.
- Now you can move on to connecting the backrest with the seat and armrests that will hold the chair. You need to attach the parts to each other using nails and screws, so the chair will be strong.
- The finished chair must be coated with primer and varnish. If desired, you can also paint it.
Finishing
After assembly, the product is completely ready for use. To extend the service life and make the chair aesthetically pleasing, it is recommended to cover it with paint and varnish coatings. This will increase the tree's resistance to increased humidity and prevent the possibility of splinters falling into the hands of users.
When finishing pallet furniture, special attention should be paid to paint and varnish materials:
- Transparent or colored varnish is suitable for these purposes. To preserve the natural structure of the wood, it is better to take a colorless varnish. And to get the desired shade of wood, you can use colored varnish.

What kind of furniture can be made
DIY pallet furniture, created in stages, can come in many forms. It can be used outdoors or in residential areas. The most popular designs are:
- sofas or armchairs, as well as other products designed for comfortable living, can be hard or with a soft seat;
- tables, both dining and coffee, of different shapes, heights and other parameters;
- shelves or racks, as well as full-fledged cabinets designed for storing a variety of small items;
- decorative elements that do not have functionality, and therefore usually serve solely as decoration of the territory or room.
Thus, wooden pallets can be used to produce a wide variety of items. They have many differences, but in any case they are easy to create, so all the steps are easy to do with your own hands.

One of the simplest designs, since the symmetrical shapes of wooden pallets allow you to work on the manufacture of comfortable furniture.
For upholstery you will need several old mattresses or a cover with filling. Support legs are not needed, since their function is performed by a stack of pallets.
Pallets are connected using screws:
- Three pallets for the support and seat, two pallets for the side restraints, two blanks are used for the backrest.
- Check the strength of fastening of the main elements of the sofa. If desired, you can close the gaps using sheets of plywood or chipboard.
- A cover is pulled over the sofa and stuffed with filling. You can use a simplified diagram and use mattresses.
We disassemble the pallets
There are many different methods for disassembling pallets, but I settled on one. First I cut off the sides of the pallets on both sides, top and bottom. There can be a lot of wood chips flying, so it's important to be very careful. It is most convenient to pull out protruding nails with a nail puller, however, not all are pulled out too “willingly”. I had to knock out particularly stubborn nails with a hammer.

Not all the nails could be pulled out, so I also used a hammer to get rid of them.
So, we cut down the side parts, but the middle board, on which the ones we need are held, remains for now. Continuing to pull out the nails, we remove the wooden dies from it.

There will be a lot of broken and damaged boards, there is nothing wrong with that - they can be used to fire a stove, for example. The remaining intact material for the chair is enough for us. I immediately set aside the “good” boards from the “bad” ones - then it will be easier to decide what to use for what.
Preface
Pallets are fairly easy to come by—some companies even pay people to pick them up because they take up a lot of space. And if you have to buy them, it won’t be too expensive. True, they have one problem - the pallets are quite difficult to disassemble, especially since they are usually not made from the highest quality wood. You need to disassemble them very carefully so that you have at least some material left from which the chair will be made.
Important! Let me note right away that you won’t get a perfectly beautiful and even chair made from pallets without additional processing, so you’ll have to “suffer” a little. If you are not ready for this, it is better to replace the pallets with something else.
My pallets are 120x90 cm in size, the boards between them are connected with strong nails, which I had to fight a lot with. I advise you to be careful when working with pallets, because... it is very easy to hurt the skin. It is better to work with gloves and safety glasses. By the way, I note that these pallets are not treated with anything harmful, so you can use them safely.

Where can I get pallets?
Wooden pallets, although they are quite durable structures, are still considered by many manufacturers and transport companies as packaging material.
Pallets weakened by load cannot be reused for transporting heavy loads, so after use they are simply disposed of
You can obtain used packaging material using one of the following methods:
- Buy used pallets. You can easily find advertisements of this kind on thematic portals. The price of products ranges from 30-150 rubles per piece.
- Contact manufacturers or transport companies directly. Most of them are ready to give away used packaging for free, just so as not to throw it away themselves.
If desired, you can assemble the pallet yourself. It is enough just to stock up on boards with a thickness of 15-20 mm and wooden beams with a cross-section of 60-70 mm. Having determined for yourself the dimensions of the future structure, you only need to cut the boards into blanks of the required sizes, and then fasten the elements together according to the standard pattern.
Wood preparation
Typically, certified pallets are made from lumber that has been selected and processed (mechanical and chemical). But during use, wood can become contaminated. In addition, the factory treatment with antiseptics will be “weakened” as a result of damage and mechanical stress on the pallet. Non-certified pallets, especially disposable ones, can be made from lumber without treatment with antiseptics.
Therefore, before making furniture, a preparatory stage is necessary, which looks like this:
- Inspect the pallets. Remove broken or severely deformed planks and replace them with intact ones. The same applies to boards that have areas infected with fungus. According to GOST 33757-2016, blunt wane on two edges is allowed, but it must be without bark.
- Clean the tray from dirt.
- Before sanding the boards, inspect the attachment points. The heads of the nails should be recessed into the wood to a depth of 1-1.5 mm. If this is not the case, then they are killed by a killer.
- The boards are sanded along the front and edges of the pallet.
- Treat with a primer and antiseptic.
Tools and materials for work
It is more convenient to process wood with an electric tool, since there are rough and uneven pallets. Hand sanding will take a lot of time and effort.
Prepare a set of tools:
- drill, screwdriver, grinder with grinding wheels;
- metal and rubber hammer, plane, chisel, nail puller;
- set of drills, pliers;
- level, tape measure, square;
- for processing brushes.
They buy impregnations, wood adhesive mixtures, and primers. For a protective layer you will need paint and varnish. The parts are connected with wood screws, and special furniture fasteners are used (optional).

Is it possible to make the back of the chair higher than the sides?
This option has a right to exist. The height dimensions of the backrest are designed in advance and taken into account when cutting pallets. If it is not possible to cut out a seat and back from one pallet at once, prepare another pallet.
Long screws for fastening two boards are difficult to tighten with a screwdriver. How to prevent wood from cracking? Screws and self-tapping screws are lubricated with soap (they pierce the piece). If twisting is difficult, pre-drill a hole in the material 0.5 mm smaller than the diameter of the hardware.

Cutting out parts of the chair
So, it's time to form the parts of the chair from the resulting wood dies. It is very important to sand them first - it will look more beautiful and the chair will be safer to use. I use a 90 cm long board - I cut out the back legs from it (detail image below). Try to repeat it exactly so that the chair is strong enough and its assembly is simple. You need two such parts.
The first part will be the back legs
Important! I used the diagram of a foreigner I know, so in the image one side of the cell corresponds to one inch, or 2.54 cm.
From another board 80 cm long I cut out the armrests according to the diagram below. You also need two of them.

Next we need to make a kind of “rail” for the back - for it I use a board 55 cm long. You only need one of these, but you will also need another, slightly different shape - it will require a board of the same size (55 cm long).

The last small figured part - I cut it out of a board 20 cm long. You need two of these.
Another small detail for the armrests
The easiest way is to cut out all the parts with a jigsaw.
Continue cutting - this time it will be easier as you make the front legs, crossbar and front crossbar for the seat. In total, you need 4 identical elements, their length is 50 cm. You can also do this either with a jigsaw or with a regular saw. I recommend signing all these details right away, so that you don’t have to struggle to find the right one later.

A rear cross member will also be required - its length should be shorter, 46 cm. In addition, two rear supports are needed. On one side the board should be 66 cm long, on the other - 58 cm. Thus, a cut needs to be made on the side.

It's time to cut out the slats that will form the seat. In total, you need 9 pieces, their width is 4.5 cm, and their length is 50 cm.
Seat strips
For the back of the chair you also need slats - 7 pieces. Their length should be 86 cm, width on one side 7 cm, and on the other - 5, i.e. you need to carefully and smoothly cut the bar. After this, all the back boards need to be folded together and trimmed evenly from the bottom, but cut from the top so that an arc is formed. The boards are not yet fastened together, so it is better to number them so that later it will be easier to figure out which one should be where.
