Among all existing types of wardrobes, three-door designs with sliding compartment doors are now considered the most popular. This is universal furniture, but it needs to be chosen wisely and the contents arranged. Let's understand all these subtleties, and home craftsmen will receive a detailed plan for self-assembly of a three-door cabinet in 5 steps.
At the moment, three-door designs occupy up to half of the cabinet market.
Assembly diagram of a three-leaf cabinet
The internal filling of the cabinet is a combination of shelves, drawers and niches for placing clothes on hangers or any large items (for example, an ironing board, a vacuum cleaner, sports equipment, etc.). Usually a two-section design is used, rarely a three-section design.

The sections are divided into equal parts, according to the width of the sashes. In the open niches left for hangers, it is necessary to install stiffeners (RH) so that the structure is stiffer and does not “walk around”.
Three-door wardrobe with mezzanines
To make assembly easier, it is better to divide the structure into two parts. There is not always enough space in the apartment to assemble a fairly voluminous three-door wardrobe “lying down” and then lift it, moving it to the right place.
Do-it-yourself three-door wardrobe with mezzanines
The mezzanine does not have to be located at the top. If you plan to use the space at the bottom of a three-leaf cabinet with your own hands for drawers, it makes sense to move the division down. In this case, the sash can remain intact. The only thing is to make sure that when attaching it, the loop will not get into the shelf.
Three-door wardrobe with drawers
It is better to take the boxes outside, behind the facades. But if for some reason the drawers need to be left inside in a three-leaf closet with your own hands, do not lose sight of the following nuances:
- The opening door of the cabinet should not interfere with the drawer moving out. To do this, the gaps on the sides of the drawer facade are made slightly larger than generally accepted, about 10 mm on each side.
- The handle on the drawer should not stick out. You can use mortise handles, flat, with a hanging bracket. Or make special recesses in the fronts of the drawer so that you can pull it out without a handle at all.
- The loop should not “get” into the façade! This problem is especially relevant for drawers located at the very bottom of the cabinet. In this case, another sidewall is “completed”, spaced 30-50 mm from the stand (sidewall) of the cabinet.
Drawers behind the cabinet doors As an option, you can “raise” the drawers to create a niche at the bottom.

Three-door wardrobes
The main secret of the popularity of three-door designs is that a regular two-door cabinet is too small, and multi-section systems are heavy and difficult to assemble on your own, plus the price of all these options is not too different.
Designs with three doors are deservedly considered the golden mean in the niche of sliding wardrobes.
Types of cabinets
- Built-in - such structures are mounted if you need to completely cut off part of the room or occupy an empty niche. They are the most convenient from the point of view of self-installation. It is not difficult to assemble shelves and drawers with your own hands, and the front panel can be ordered separately;
- Semi-built-in - in such cabinets one or both side walls are permanently installed. The ceiling is used as the top cover, and the back panel is replaced by the wall of the room;
- Cabinet - cabinet designs have everything except the back panel; all parts are attached to the wall of the room. Used in apartments and houses with high ceilings;
- Modular - essentially this is a constructor, here you can arrange drawers, shelves and other elements at your discretion. This option is not suitable for self-assembly; reputable companies attract buyers with modular designs, although if they are made to order in a regular furniture workshop, it will be cheaper.

3-door sliding wardrobes: advantages and disadvantages
Among the advantages, the following are especially in demand:
- Rational use of usable space. Such furniture occupies the entire area, from floor to ceiling, and if you properly distribute the space, then a lot of things will fit into a relatively small closet;
- A swing door requires additional space when opening; the sliding system does not cause problems in this regard;
- The architectural excesses of apartments with an old layout, such as niches made for unknown reasons and abandoned crooked corners, are instantly transformed into advantages with the help of built-in furniture;
- From experience, in Brezhnevka and Khrushchevka buildings, it is the three-door wardrobe that works great in bedrooms and children’s rooms;
- The three-section facade opens up wide design possibilities. By intelligently alternating matte finishes, gloss, glass and mirror, you can create genuine furniture masterpieces from relatively inexpensive materials;
By combining relatively inexpensive materials you can create an original facade.
- It is possible for a home craftsman to assemble such furniture with his own hands. Moreover, here you can do without expensive machines and professional tools, but more on that later.
Where the disadvantages lie:
- Sliding doors are considered the weak point in such furniture. Cheap roller systems fail within 2-3 years, and the saddest thing is that they cannot be repaired; the mechanism has to be completely changed. Therefore, you cannot save on door rollers;
- Since it is impossible to fully open the cabinet in the three-door version, it is necessary to install additional internal lighting or, at a minimum, place a couple of spotlights above the doors;
Only high-quality fittings from a reputable manufacturer can guarantee long-term operation of the roller system.
How to choose a three-leaf wardrobe
In essence, the choice of such furniture is based on 3 “pillars” - the size, the material from which the cabinet is made and the type of roller door system.
According to the established rules, the width of 1 leaf of sliding doors should not exceed 700 mm; through simple calculations we get the possible maximum for a 3-door wardrobe of 2100 mm, but there are nuances here.
- To avoid gaps between the doors, in the closed position they must have an overlap of 30 - 50 mm, respectively, if the distance exceeds 2.1 m, then either narrow panels must be inserted on the sides of the frame, or the door leaves must be made wider;
- Ordering wide doors is not a problem, but they will be heavy and for such doors, you will have to buy a high-quality and far from cheap roller system;
- We conclude that if you order furniture for a wide span, then it is better to increase the size of the doors and at the same time put good rollers on them, and if you do it yourself, then it would be wiser to insert vertical stripes on both sides, but for ease of use their width should not exceed 150 mm.
Wide sliding doors look good, but their installation is best left to professionals.
Another point related to the topic of dimensions is the choice of design depth. In production models it ranges from 450 to 650 mm. But small boxes (up to 600 mm) are very inconvenient to use and are only suitable for a hallway.
I don’t know who came up with these standards and when, but from personal experience I can say that the depth of a good sliding wardrobe only starts at 650 mm. The thing is that, depending on the model, the roller system takes from 50 to 100 mm of depth, plus the gap between the doors and shelves is 10 - 15 mm.
Now let's do the math: for example, you saved money and took a box 500 mm deep. We subtract (at a minimum) 50 mm for the rollers and 10 mm for the gap, we are left with 44 cm. Any housewife will tell you that such miniature shelves will only fit towels and handkerchiefs, not to mention suits and outerwear.
With the choice of material for arranging the shelves and facade, everything is a little simpler. I recommend that you give up natural boards. More precisely, inside the frame for the shelves can still be assembled from timber, but wood is not suitable for the facade; due to the different humidity in the closet and outside, the board will crack. The rest of the picture is this:
Illustrations | Recommendations |
Plywood . Thick plywood with a “jacket” of expensive veneer will last a long time, but it costs serious money, so it is used extremely rarely.
laminated chipboard. An excellent material, but at the moment it is considered harmful due to the presence of formaldehyde in it.
| |
MDF. The most popular material at the moment, it does not contain any harmful impurities and is highly durable.
| |
Glass. In terms of popularity, glass can compete with MDF and chipboard. Here we use either a mirror or frosted sandblasted glass. The only negative is that the glass breaks. It is better, of course, to take tempered glass, it is stronger and safer. But as an option, you can use ordinary glass covered with a transparent polymer film; it will cost half as much. By the way, you can take the film with an ornament or photo panel |
The choice of a roller system is one of the most important points. Steel rollers with the same metal guides are considered the most reliable, but in the budget sector these systems are noisy.
Aluminum systems make less noise, but wear out faster. The service life, depending on the brand and the chosen model, ranges from 10 years. But I don’t recommend paying attention to plastic. As for the device, there are 3 directions:
Illustrations | Recommendations |
Monorail. The system is exclusively top-mounted, where paired rollers move inside a profiled pipe. There is either nothing at the bottom, or a metal stop is attached that prevents the canvas from oscillating. The monorail is the most reliable and high-quality, suitable for doors of any weight and size, but it is also the most expensive.
Suspension with hooks . Budget version of the upper suspension. The rollers are easy to hang on the hooks, but also easy to pop out of them. It's not expensive, but it's not popular.
Support roller. At the bottom, along the edges of the canvas, 2 adjustable rollers are installed, which move along metal guides. It is on them that the canvas rests. A profile is also installed on top along which rollers mounted on the upper edge ride, but they are only needed to hold the doors in a vertical position. This model is considered the most popular. Well-known brands provide a 10-15 year guarantee for such fittings. |
Filling a 3-door wardrobe
Each housewife has her own opinion about the filling and distribution of sections inside the closet, plus the layout of the furniture for the hallway is radically different from the same furniture in the bedroom or living room.
Options for the layout of sections for a 3-door wardrobe.
So a three-door design in a hallway usually consists of 3 sections. From what I saw, I liked the following most:
- The section closest to the entrance doors is intended for clothes and shoes that are used at a given time. That is, either a rod is mounted in the center for trempels, or hooks are mounted on the back wall, at the bottom of a net or shelf for shoes, and on top is a section of hats;
- The department farthest from the door is arranged in exactly the same way as the one closest, only it is intended for clothes and shoes that are awaiting their season;
- In the middle of the central section there are drawers for various small things such as shoe and clothing care products. From the middle and above there are shelves for handbags and other relatively large things. At the bottom there is a compartment for a vacuum cleaner.
Option for arranging sections in a hallway closet.
- In bedrooms and living rooms, the filling of closets is often the same. Here, essential items such as underwear, shirts, robes, socks, etc. are placed on the central horizon;
- A separate section is allocated for bed linen, but it should not start below 50 cm from the floor;
- Closer to the outlet, either a retractable ironing board or a compartment for this board is installed;
- On the top shelves there are warm blankets, suitcases and other rarely taken out items.
The generally accepted scheme for filling a sliding wardrobe.
Cabinets
Modern hallways try to rid as much as possible of unnecessary or rarely used things, and hide everything else behind beautiful and neat facades of storage systems.
A wardrobe can best cope with this function. It has compact dimensions, does not require additional space for opening the doors, and securely holds the mirror built into it.
Thanks to the fairly large interior space, compartments are perfect for storing small items of clothing: scarves, mittens, hats, outerwear, shoes, care items, and all of the above items.
Hinged cabinets are less popular, but are still used quite often.
Materials
Wardrobes with hinged doors are made from different materials.
The most common are the following:
- Solid wood (oak, walnut, beech, etc.). Products made from natural wood are durable and reliable, but expensive. They are more suitable for rooms designed in a classic or art deco style.
- Chipboard. The most common option for making a cabinet. The material is of high quality, but at a low cost.
- MDF. It is also an excellent alternative to natural wood. Similar to the previous material, but more durable.
- Veneer. It is a thin sheet of wood. The veneer attribute includes a sheet of laminated chipboard or MDF with a natural coating. This material provides more opportunities for implementing interesting design solutions.
Where to start assembling a wardrobe
First you need to check whether all the spare parts were delivered to you. There should be several boxes with chipboard (at least two), doors and packaging with hardware. The manufacturer can pack hardware and additional elements in a box with chipboard. Be careful when receiving the cabinet, as delivery workers may sometimes forget some elements or may damage some of its parts, be sure to check this.
What tools will you need to assemble the cabinet:
- Phillips screwdriver PH2;
- hex key, edge width 5 mm (L-shaped);
- roulette (ruler);
- level (optional);
The assembly process will speed up significantly if you have a screwdriver with bits (hex and Phillips), but you can do without it.
Assembly diagram for a 3-door wardrobe
To save money on assembling a cabinet compartment without turning to professionals, you can do it yourself. In addition to all the parts, the furniture kit should include cabinet door assembly instructions to help you assemble the cabinet correctly and quickly.
Required Tools
Almost every cabinet model comes with the necessary bolts, nails, and washers, but here are the tools you need to prepare. To assemble the cabinet you will need the following tools:
- Crosshead screwdriver.
- PZ2 bit.
- Straight screwdriver.
- Screwdriver or drill.
- 4 mm metal tip.
- Hammer.
- Level.
- Pliers.
- Stationery knife.
- Hex key.
Additionally, you may need additional parts to assemble the wall cabinet. For example, if the floors are uneven, it is necessary to prepare the underlays in advance. Depending on the model, an acknowledgment bit and a 6mm bit may be required.
Assembly Basics
There are standard rules for assembling a wardrobe:
- Do not unpack all the parts at once, otherwise you may get confused and it will take a long time to find the part you need.
- Before doing this, you must carefully study the instructions for assembling the cabinet door.
- Make sure all accessories are in place and in the correct sizes and colors.
- Assembly is carried out in stages, starting from the bottom of the cabinet.
- Mirrors and glass are installed last.
- The space for the cabinet must be selected in such a way that when installing it, all the necessary dimensions are observed and there are no holes or other obstacles.
COMFORT INSIDE
First, choose a basic or modular frame that best suits the width of your opening. The rigid metal frame structures are painted white and can be cut to size. Then fill the closet with various necessary little things: honeycomb shelves (laminated, metal or glass), containers and pull-out hangers for clothes, racks, lighting elements for the interior of the closet, a folding ironing board.
Lightweight baskets made of aluminum wire and convenient drawers made of chipboard or plastic allow you to compactly place many small items and help maintain order in your apartment. It turns out that all things are neatly folded and at the same time easily accessible. Now estimate the width of the remaining sections. If necessary, divide any of the sections into a reasonable number of subsections using chipboard partitions. Fill them with hangers, shelves or other accessories.

How to position it correctly?
Before purchasing this type of furniture, you need to choose a place for its location, and only then take measurements and choose a design. The best option is to install a mirrored wardrobe built into a niche. This option saves space. If the niche turns out to be very small, then a two-door model can be built inside. In a narrow and long room, it is recommended to install the model along a short wall if there is no other entrance.
Another option would be to install a compartment opposite the front door. If you have a wide, square-shaped hallway, it is recommended to install a long wardrobe that occupies the entire wall right up to the door to the other room. The mirror surface of the product will visually enlarge the hallway and make it brighter.
If a wardrobe with a mirror will be used as an interior partition, it should be placed in the middle of the room for zoning. To give the interior an interesting look in this case, you can decorate the furniture with mirrors on all sides. Installing doors on both sides will make the design practical and functional.
For an overview of the wardrobe with a mirror in the hallway, see the following video.
Varieties
Cabinets with three doors, decorated with a mirror, can be of a wide variety of configurations and varieties:
- built-in - installed in a niche or from wall to wall, significantly saving room space and manufacturing materials, since the walls, floor, and ceiling of the room serve as load-bearing elements;
- corner – great for decorating a room with non-standard configurations, they fit wonderfully into the useless corner part of a small room, visually changing its perception;
- radius design models - more often used for larger premises; non-standard shapes and lines of furniture vary depending on customer requirements, which adds originality to the interior;
- cabinet, free-standing sliding wardrobes - have a large capacity.
In addition to linear, angular and radial, a three-leaf wardrobe with a mirror can have a combined design, arbitrary width and height depending on each specific room, different contents, and internal lighting. If you intend to purchase a wardrobe, you find it difficult to choose a facade, feel free to give preference to a storage system with mirrored doors - this is a win-win option for any room.

Special designs inside
As you know, in addition to a separate wardrobe, there are also interesting prefabricated structures that immediately include space for storing clothes, a separate niche for placing a desk, computer or TV
It is important to fill the entire space correctly - from top to bottom.
Another interesting solution would be to design an open structure, where one or more doors move in different directions, based on the needs of the owner. Such designs are considered very practical, so many people strive to create a wardrobe with sliding doors in their homes.
Dimensions
Choosing new furniture always begins with determining its dimensions. Here you need to take into account not only the width and height of the room where the piece of furniture will be installed, but also the final design of the room. Every centimeter is important in this matter. For example, if a cabinet or any other piece of furniture is installed next to a wide wardrobe, you need to properly think through their placement. In this case, it would not be superfluous to create a design project for the room and, based on it, make a drawing of the future furniture.
Naturally, you need to take into account the parameters of the house. But there are other important points. The maximum height of sliding wardrobes is limited by the ceiling; if you decide to choose a “high” model, keep in mind that it is not recommended to make doors higher than 2.5 m, maximum 2.65 m. The uncovered part either remains open or is equipped with additional doors. If a suspended ceiling is installed in the room, then there should be a distance of at least 50 centimeters between it and the upper plane.
Standard
As such, there are no standard sizes of sliding wardrobes. But there are recommendations that you should follow when creating a project:
- height of the base is about 10 cm;
- The maximum height of the sliding wardrobe is 250 cm, which corresponds to the height of the chipboard sheet. In addition, the height of the ceilings is often 2.2 - 2.5 meters, so making furniture higher is pointless;
- furniture width – 300 cm;
- total depth 45 cm, if less, then it will no longer be a standard model. In general, the most convenient to use is a wardrobe with a depth of 50 cm;
- shelf width – no more than 100 cm;
- the distance between the shelves is 30 cm.
The standard height is directly related to the height of the apartment's ceilings. Such furniture will be relevant in the living room or bedroom - it is roomy, functional, and does not take up too much usable space.
Mini
A small wardrobe will fit perfectly into the interior of a small hallway, since a standard product is often too large for these rooms. The drawing of the future item is made taking into account the size of the room. You should know that there are some restrictions for such lockers:
- the minimum width is 100 cm. The minimum size of doors for sliding wardrobes is 45 cm (width). If you make them narrower, the design will not be reliable, and the doors may simply fall out. If this value is too large, then you will have to choose a model with swing doors;
- sliding wardrobes 35 cm deep are the minimum. You need to understand that the size of the shelf itself will be even smaller - about 25 cm, since compartment doors according to the standard have a width of 10 cm. If the depth of the cabinet is 30 cm, 20 cm remains for the shelves - which is inconvenient and impractical.
- The maximum height of a mini structure has no restrictions; these can be both low options and products for ceilings with mezzanines.
The minimum depth of a wardrobe can be less than 35 centimeters. But most often, sliding wardrobes with a depth of 35 cm are created for specific needs.
Maxi
Large sliding wardrobes are usually installed in spacious rooms - bedrooms or living rooms. Also, such designs are great for dressing rooms. As with the mini issue, maxi sizes also have certain limitations:
- if the minimum depth is 35 cm, then the maximum is 90 cm. It should be understood that a wardrobe with a deeper shelf will be inconvenient to use, because on average the arm length of an adult is 60 cm. A sliding wardrobe with a depth of 50 cm is considered the most comfortable;
- the height of the structure is limited by the dimensions of a standard chipboard sheet - 278 cm. If it is necessary to increase the height, mezzanines are added to the project. At the same time, it is advisable to make the doors double, separating the upper shelves from the main compartment;
- The width of the sliding wardrobe is also limited by the size of the chipboard sheet. To increase it, partitions are added to the drawing. In this case, the finished structure will consist of two or more modules;
- the design of doors also has certain restrictions - the length of the guides cannot be more than 5 m, taking into account the width of the door itself up to 1 m.
When making furniture to order, the drawing plays a big role - if errors are made during its development, then a wardrobe with a depth of 50 cm or any other will be of poor quality or completely unsuitable for use.
Facade design options
In addition to the usual, familiar silver mirror, designers use a variety of color shades to decorate surfaces. Decorative processing in the form of artistic painting, original sandblasting drawings, unusual stained glass windows, and spectacular photo printing is in great demand among consumers. Designers easily bring the most complex and incredible ideas to life.
The overall atmosphere of the room will depend on the decorating technique you choose. The fashionable trend today is the use of color and structural contrasts in the design of facades, a combination of light and dark shades in the design.
Features of facade design techniques:
- applying a sandblasting pattern - a strong, durable finish made on a solid canvas, distinguished by elegant lines and exquisite play of light, making the image three-dimensional, fits well into different styles;
- stained glass windows - expressive design of the cabinet facade is possible in classic and modern style, making it a “living” element of decor;
- photo printing - bright, spectacular images of nature, metropolitan streets, reproductions of famous artists, scenes from films, family photos, panoramic drawings - the flight of imagination is unlimited;
- unique artistic painting - a specialist can create any image, not limited in size and color scheme, according to customer requirements;
- Oracal film is an original and recently quite popular way of decorating a facade. The film made from PVC is durable, elastic, the pattern is created by gluing to the surface in one or several layers, which allows you to realize unique mosaic images.
The latest technologies make it possible to apply graphic images to the surface of facades, decorate surfaces with laser engraving, create a 3D effect, and install lighting in such a way that the cabinet will look much more impressive. Each buyer will be able to choose the original design of the facade of a three-door wardrobe with a mirror to their taste.

Forms
A corner wardrobe is suitable where literally every square centimeter needs to be used as efficiently as possible. But saving space does not relieve the obligation to calculate the product, otherwise it will either not fit into the decor, or will not be capacious enough, or will still exceed the planned dimensions.
A narrow closet can be a solution if the room is relatively small, but you shouldn’t narrow it too much to avoid unnatural disproportions. Almost flat structures can be used, if they stand along the wall of a room or corridor, then this will be a positive side.
Equipment
Furniture with hinged doors has different configurations: it depends on the style direction of the model, its purpose and location. Each style has its own canons regarding the entire room and its components. An important role will also be played by fittings, which will set the tone for the entire product. A hinged wardrobe in the minimalist direction, as a rule, is not equipped with handles and has a minimum number of drawers and shelves. The classic model has not only a luxurious appearance, but also a “rich” internal content. It can be equipped with a chest of drawers, which will accommodate underwear and various things for sleeping.
Attributes intended for storing a wardrobe are often equipped with shelves and a bar (for shirts, dresses, blouses, etc.) or loops (for outerwear). In addition, they are complemented by various baskets and drawers, which can be deep (for bulky items) or shallow (for socks, scarves, underwear), roll-out or retractable. By the way, the second option has complex design features, so it will cost more.
Peculiarities
The hinged wardrobe is ideal for those who want to furnish the hallway in a restrained classic style. Such models do not lose their attractiveness for years. Tested for more than one generation, the cabinets meet all the requirements of the classic model range, combining convenience, functionality and a presentable appearance (numerous photos confirm this), while simultaneously providing worthy competition to the sliding wardrobes so beloved by many. Before installing a cabinet with hinged doors, you should calculate the area it will occupy, taking into account open doors, and whether there will be enough free space for passage. If you rationally approach the organization of space, taking into account all the advantages and disadvantages of the room, hiding, for example, bulky items in a niche, it is possible to place a hinged wardrobe even in a small hallway. This furniture has its own characteristics:
the built-in wardrobe merges with the wall, is invisible, while looking compact and aesthetically pleasing; all doors open silently; large capacity allows you to turn the entire space into a usable area, which is especially important for placing seasonal items of clothing; Even a non-professional can easily assemble the cabinet; designs combine traditional methods with the use of new technologies, which ensures reliability and durability; The variety of models makes it possible for everyone to choose the necessary and most successful option.
A swing wardrobe has its pros and cons. The main advantage is manifested in the built-in modules - large capacity. Clothes are freely placed and stored (including for the cold season), there are shelves for shoes, hats, umbrellas, bags and accessories, drawers for equipment, niches for large items. However, a hinged wardrobe has a number of disadvantages: it is quite large, takes up a lot of space, is not suitable for narrow hallways, you cannot hang clothes wet from rain there, and it is difficult to decorate such a wardrobe with decorative items. With curved walls, hanging hinges are difficult to adjust. The design of the facade allows the use of only laminated chipboard or mirrors as materials.
Kinds
The three-door sliding wardrobe is produced in series by many manufacturers, and the model range is constantly expanding. Furniture is made individually if certain non-standard sizes are required. Or the customer wants to make an exclusive model that will fit perfectly into the interior design. Accordingly, such furniture has a high cost.
According to the method of arrangement, such furniture can be:
- case;
- built-in;
- semi-built-in;
- modular.
Also, designs may vary depending on their location.

Bedroom
Sliding wardrobes are included in many bedroom sets. Manufacturers may offer several sizes of this type of furniture. With all the variety of models, for the most part, these are rectangular structures. As an addition to them they can be equipped with corner elements. The filling usually consists of three types of sections, with many variations:
- compartments with a bar for hangers;
- shelves for linen;
- drawers that are used to store small accessories.
A built-in wardrobe with three doors, a non-standard shape is made to order. At the same time, the flight of imagination is not limited in terms of the materials used, the appearance of the facade sections, and decors. The sizes and contents are varied. In size they can correspond to small dressing rooms. Interesting options with photos of similar furniture are posted below.
Hallways
Installing a three-door wardrobe in the hallway is a practical and convenient solution, even for small spaces. Sometimes in small apartments there is no free wall to mount a rectangular structure, but you can use a corner. Then radius furniture is most appropriate.
The purpose of the 3-door design is different; it is intended for storing seasonal outerwear, shoes, and hats. Therefore, the package includes:
- compartment with a barbell;
- shelves for shoes;
- top shelves.
In cabinets high to the ceiling, an additional mezzanine-shaped compartment can be installed for storing out-of-season items.
Living room
In small apartments, a closet with three doors is often installed in the living room. Such designs are of a combined nature. The middle inner section is used for home equipment (music center with speakers, TV), side compartments for storing clothes. Thanks to the use of mirrors, doors made of composite materials, and lighting, it naturally fits into the interior of the room.
In houses and apartments with sufficient space, 3-door structures for home appliances are installed separately. Then the internal content depends on the dimensions of the stored items.
Shape and dimensions
In terms of size, a four-door wardrobe fully corresponds to the individual characteristics of the room for which it is created, but the dimensions of the product usually fit into the ranges below:
- length: from 180 to 360 cm;
- height: from 200 to 270 cm;
- depth: from 40 to 60 cm.
Four-door wardrobes are designed in various ways and often have the most incredible shapes. But there are several “standard” options:
- regular cabinet - this 4-door design is the “classic” version of this type of furniture. The decision to use it will never cause any complaints, since this appearance is familiar to many and is even perceived as one of the attributes of comfort;
- built-in - the use of this form is most relevant if there is a free niche in the room, where a structure that does not have an external casing will be built in. The most obvious advantage of such a product with four doors is its low cost (after all, only doors and internal contents are included in the kit);
- corner - can be either built-in or cabinet-mounted. Allows you to fill a usually empty corner space and make it more functional.

Materials used for manufacturing
In the vast majority of cases, the box and internal filling are made of chipboard (chipboard). This is a practical, inexpensive material made from wood chips, coated with a layer of plastic. The front part of the cabinet is in plain sight, it is for this reason that the main attention is paid to it, the emphasis is placed on it in terms of decor.
Basic materials for the facade:
- MDF board (fine fraction) made of wood. That is, wood shavings are split into a dusty state and pressed using a vacuum method at high temperatures. Under their influence, wood resins are released, which glue the slab together. MDF is covered on top with films of different colors and textures, including those imitating natural wood or painted. Various three-dimensional designs and patterns are made on the surface. The advantage of the material is its affordable price and wide range of colors. The slab does not require edging and is quite durable;
- mirror facades - they are suitable when you need to create the illusion of expanded space, visually reformat it. Coupes with a sandblasted pattern, engraving using sand and water under high pressure are popular;
- facades made of glass of different types: colored, frosted. Glass facades with photo printing look impressive. For example, the image of a panorama or perspective deepens the space. For glass and mirror facades, it is necessary to additionally install aluminum stiffeners, since the material is quite heavy;
- For modern styling, composite materials (combined polymers) are now often used.
A three-leaf wardrobe with sliding doors made of wood is made less frequently, often to order. Wooden shields can lead, they are quite heavy. If you need the texture of natural wood, then MDF panels coated with natural veneer are used as an alternative.
In addition to the listed types of door decors, techniques such as fusing are used. This is a mosaic in the form of a specific pattern made of fused colored glass. Painting with acrylic paints, which, when hardened, allow you to aesthetically transform the facade.

How to choose?
A closed wardrobe with a mezzanine fits into most existing interiors. But in order not to make a mistake with the model, you need to take into account some points. What matters is the purpose of the room where the system will be installed and for what purposes it will be used (storage of linen, equipment, etc.).
You need to guess the size and pay attention to the following details:
How the doors of the product close/open, especially if you buy a three-door cabinet. For example, swing structures are suitable for spacious rooms; they are not suitable for small ones. Such models take up space, so their use in small rooms will be extremely inconvenient. The best option for a modest-sized apartment is a closet with an accordion opening system. This furniture attribute will become a stylish and original addition to the room.
It is worth thinking about the number of items that will be in the furniture storage
The number of required sections and shelves, the depth and height of the mezzanine depend on this factor. It is important to carefully inspect the fittings and material of fasteners. These elements must be durable, strong, and therefore reliable. This design will last a long time and will not create problems during operation.
It is better to avoid plastic options; they quickly break down. Case quality. The most durable option is furniture made from solid wood. If you don’t have enough money to buy such a system or want to buy something simpler, for example, a system made of MDF or chipboard, then you should make sure that this is the highest quality raw material. You definitely need to take into account the style of the room. Only in this case will the selected product look organic. If you can’t choose a cabinet yourself, you can entrust this task to a specialist.

As designers note, hanging products, which include mezzanines, cannot be mounted wherever you please.
There are certain rules:
- The mezzanine should not block the access to the door and window openings.
- The wall on which the cabinet will hang must be strong and reliable.
- The appearance of the room should not change for the worse when installing a mezzanine. For example, if you choose the wrong location for a cabinet, the room can become visually narrow, low, and small.
- If you have an apartment with high ceilings, it is better to install a three-door wardrobe with a gallery mezzanine so that all the walls of the room are used.
- Mezzanines should be located at a height of 2 m from the floor level, so that when opened they will not make it difficult for other people to move around the room, and all their contents can be clearly viewed.
According to experts, a closet with mezzanines should be equipped with additional light sources. The light from a chandelier hanging on the ceiling, a sconce on the wall or a floor lamp may not be enough.
In this case it is recommended:
- Install an additional lamp near the mezzanine so that the rays of light fall into its interior space.
- Place a small light source directly in the cabinet. To avoid accidentally damaging it, you can use a lampshade.

Forms
The variety of shapes of swing models allows you to install them in almost any corner of the room.
The following attribute forms are available to choose from:
- Direct. They are spacious and multi-functional. Suitable for spacious rooms.
- Angular. L-shaped products are great for saving space in small rooms, replacing an entire dressing room.
- Radial. One of the sides of such cabinets is round, which gives the attribute a stylish and modern look. Such cabinets are often narrow, so they fit perfectly in a small room.
- Combined. This option combines several forms in one model: a corner product with a radius swing door or a simple wardrobe with a chest of drawers.
After all, for a room in a classic style, where clear and straight lines are a priority, a model with beveled corners is completely unsuitable, and cabinets with a large number of handles, shelves, drawers and other components are unacceptable for minimalism.
Tips for choosing
The sliding wardrobe has a lot of advantages. Multifunctional, roomy, allowing you to store a variety of things and objects, and also having an attractive and aesthetic appearance - such a cabinet has long become an integral part of the modern interior in almost every home. However, the model must be selected depending on its location in the room, because cabinets are very diverse in terms of design, each has individual design features.
Here are some tips on how to choose the right storage system for a particular room:
- for the hallway - as a rule, a closet in this part of the apartment performs exclusively the function of storing things, the main selection criterion is its spaciousness and compactness, so the optimal storage system would be a discreet design - a combined facade with a mirror surface, while you should not save on mirrors, even with their help you can visually enlarge a tiny hallway;
- for the living room - in addition to its main purpose, the closet is a decoration of the room, creates a mood and a unique atmosphere; facades with sandblasted patterns, original photo printing, and stained glass windows look good here;
- for a bedroom – a special charm will be given to the room by furniture whose façade is decorated with a photo pattern: landscapes, warm family photographs, mirrors with interesting patterns or panoramic views;
- in the children's room - a cute wardrobe with photo printing of scenes from favorite cartoons, fairy tales and comics will appeal to every child, and teenagers will be pleased to see photos of their idols on the facade.
Recommendations for choosing mirrors. Manufacturers offer a large selection: bronze, silver, graphite mirrors and others. Silver ones are the best choice; compared to all others, they do not distort colors in reflection and significantly increase the space of the room. Mirror surfaces of other shades create a somewhat uncomfortable atmosphere in the room. Do not forget that a protective film must be present on the mirror; this will protect you and your household from injury if the glass is damaged.
A sliding wardrobe allows you not to clutter up the space of the room, but to use it rationally. Each piece of custom-made furniture is unique.
A three-leaf wardrobe with a mirror will look great in the hallway, living room or bedroom, the main thing is to decorate it correctly. You should not combine a wardrobe with heavy antique furniture, crystal chandeliers and heavy curtains - at least it is inappropriate. Decorative lighting of glass facades makes the appearance of storage systems much more impressive, and the picture depicted on them looks more realistic.
Materials for the manufacture of the body and facade
Modern cabinet furniture for storing clothes is made from a variety of materials. Most often used for these purposes:
- tree;
- chipboard;
- MDF;
- plastic.

Wardrobes for clothes Chipboard - can often be found in children's institutions and the Economy furniture sector. These can be low types of wardrobes of toiletries, for storing personal items when the main part is in another closet.
The following materials are most often used to decorate facades:
- Chipboard is an economical option, characterized by durability, ease of operation and maintenance;
- a mirror is not a cheap option, which is perfect for visually enlarging space;
- lakomat - frosted, translucent glass that will perfectly decorate the interior with its appearance;
- lacobel - glass coated with colored varnish. Most often used for combined facades;
- sandblasting pattern - applied to decorative glass or mirror;
- plastic is an excellent budget option, ideal for combined facades;
- bamboo is a natural material that gives furniture originality;
- rattan - often used in combination with other materials;
- decoracrylic is an original material that has absorbed the properties of natural and synthetic materials;
- artificial leather – such a cabinet is suitable for offices or libraries;
- photo printing – for this design you can choose any drawing or photo.
The design of the cabinet facade most often refers to the decorative finishing of the doors. Exclusive designer cabinets delight with a non-standard approach - the doors can display engravings, stained glass, mosaics and sandblasted mirror finishes. Unusual solutions allow you to design, for example, Italian wardrobes. As a rule, this is a white body, imitating a tree bleached on the seashore, on which a pastoral photo with landscapes in the Provence style is applied.
A plastic cabinet can be decorated with colored films or panels painted in the paste. The schoolchild's corner is decorated with photo prints of favorite cartoon and comic characters and decorations for the child's hobbies.
An open cabinet can have decor at the ends of the shelves. These can be chamfered edges or simply rendered in a contrasting color. To add visual depth, the back wall of the shelves can be painted in a contrasting color.

Manufacturing materials
The cases of three-leaf wardrobes with mirrors are made from the same standard materials as any other cabinet furniture:
- natural wood is the most expensive, strong, durable material; a cabinet made of elite wood with a beautifully designed facade can “survive” more than one generation, remaining the pride of its owners;
- Laminated chipboard - the appearance is almost no different from natural wood, significantly inferior in price;
- Chipboard is a chipboard treated with formaldehyde resin, a durable material common in furniture production, affordable;
- MDF – used as an auxiliary material for cabinet furniture, the manufacture of back walls of cabinets, bottoms of drawers;
- veneer (veneered wood) – despite its low cost, it looks like natural wood and is used for the manufacture of facades and side surfaces;
- aluminum, plastic - for finishing some furniture parts.

The highlight of sliding wardrobes are mirrored facades - a decorative reflective surface. Photos of furniture catalogs demonstrate the variety of design solutions for similar finishing of the front part of cabinets. The thickness of the mirror is 4 mm, its reverse side is treated with a special shockproof coating that prevents it from falling apart if damaged. You can decorate all cabinet doors with mirrors. A three-door coupe with a mirror in the middle will also look good. By combining decorative glass with inserts made of artificial or natural materials (rattan, bamboo, leather, fabric), you can create a stunning effect.
Mirrors can be like this:
- colorless;
- matte;
- tinted;
- bronze;
- silver

Assembly diagram of a three-leaf cabinet
The internal filling of the cabinet is a combination of shelves, drawers and niches for placing clothes on hangers or any large items (for example, an ironing board, a vacuum cleaner, sports equipment, etc.). Usually a two-section design is used, rarely a three-section design. DIY three-leaf wardrobe diagram
Calculation of the dimensions of a sliding system for three doors
I would like to talk more about calculating door sizes. This is a very important point because the cabinet is designed in such a way that when the door is opened, only one section can be accessed, while the other two remain closed.
Therefore, if you want to make drawers instead of shelves, which are adopted in our three-piece cabinet design, and install a pantograph lift instead of a coat rack, you must carefully calculate the width of each door. In addition, the section in which the drawers or pantograph lift will be installed must be smaller than the width of the door (approximately the width of the profile).
To calculate the height and width of the doors, you need to calculate the size of the cabinet opening. So we calculate:
- Opening height: From the cover height of 2400 mm, subtract the chipboard thickness of 32 mm (top/bottom) and the height of the plinth of 100 mm. Result 2400 - 32 - 100 = 2268 mm.
- The width of the opening is calculated as follows: from 1800, subtract the chipboard thickness of 32 mm (right and left posts). We get 1800 - 32 = 1768 mm.
As a result, we get the opening dimensions of our three-door cabinet: 2268 * 1768 mm.
These calculations are quite sufficient; it is enough to provide the overall dimensions of the height and width of each door (in our case they are the same), as well as the dimensions of the upper and lower slats, and the same furniture store specialists will calculate the length of the vertical profiles, the dimensions of the crossbars, etc.
The design of our three-door wardrobe assumes the presence of one door with a solid mirror panel, and two doors with a matte mirror, separated by crossbars. You will need to tell the cabinetmaker that the doors should be divided into four equal parts and they will figure out the size of the inserts and the number of headers.
