Healthy sleep is necessary for the full development of the baby. The task of parents is to provide the child with a comfortable sleeping place. A well-chosen size of a baby blanket is one of the components of comfort in a crib. Anything that is too bulky will bunch up, preventing the child from moving freely while sleeping. A small one will slide down, not allowing you to fully cover yourself.

Factors influencing choice
The stores offer a huge selection of bedding. Parents do not always think about how important it is to choose the right size of baby blanket for a crib. For example, if a non-standard model is purchased, then difficulties will arise with the selection of bed linen. Duvet covers will have to be sewn or adjusted, as standard ones will be too big or too small. But the most important criterion is, of course, the child’s comfort.
When choosing, take into account:
- Age and height of the baby. Bedding should “grow” with the baby. It is clear that the size of a blanket for a newborn and for a 5-year-old child cannot be the same. After all, the baby has grown significantly, which means his blanket should become larger.
- Sleeping area. An important parameter is the dimensions of the bed. It is extremely uncomfortable if the blanket is significantly larger than the sleeping place; it will take up a lot of space, preventing the owner from sitting comfortably in the crib. But even a small one will be inconvenient. It is best if the blanket is slightly larger than the mattress, then you can comfortably wrap yourself or tuck yourself into it.
- Purpose and season of use. In addition to bedding for sleeping, newborns are bought special blankets or envelopes for discharge from the hospital and for walks. The season of use also influences the choice. A summer flannelette or knitted blanket may be slightly smaller than a winter down blanket.
For babies, square models are used; they are more convenient for wrapping. Teenage blankets, as a rule, have a rectangular shape.
Why is the size of a baby blanket important?
Knowing that sleep for a child is a source of energy and the basis for full development, and that the baby will have to spend most of the day in bed, responsible parents are tasked with organizing a sleeping place in advance - carefully choosing a crib, stroller, mattresses, other bedding, developing the right lighting, provide reliable sound insulation.
In the hustle and bustle, it is often overlooked that the cause of discomfort and frequent waking up can be an item of daily use such as a blanket, namely an incorrectly selected size. What problems does such an omission entail:
- due to the discrepancy in size, length and width proportions, the blanket does not fit in the crib, bulges, and covers unevenly;
- impossible to refill;
- the child gets lost in it;
- the blanket is bulky, restricts movement, puts a lot of pressure on top (size restrictions are especially important for a cotton blanket);
- puffs up, forms thick folds that tightly cover the head, preventing normal breathing;
- the product is too small, does not allow you to fully wrap yourself up, move, change body positions - it blows from the sides;
- constantly gets confused, slides to the floor under the weight of its own weight and the child freezes;
- Due to non-standard sizes, difficulties arise in the future with the selection of duvet covers; as a result, the blanket begins to roll or dangle, which affects the comfort of sleep and does not satisfy aesthetic requirements.
Choosing a blanket for discharge
Blankets for newborns deserve a separate discussion. It is in these “clothes” that babies make their first “journey from the maternity hospital to their place of residence.
The standard size of a blanket for discharge is 80 by 80 cm. And if the birth of a large baby is expected or the birth date falls during the cold period of the year, then a larger option is suitable - 90 by 90 or 95 by 95 cm. For discharge, you can purchase a so-called envelope in which You can easily wrap your baby and secure the position with ties.
The discharge blanket is not very comfortable to use for sleeping, but it may be suitable for walking in the first 3 months.
Bedding for the crib should be chosen according to the size of the bed. A standard crib is 120 cm long and 60 cm wide and is usually used for a year or even two. But a three- to four-year-old child needs different furniture for sleeping.
You can buy ready-made bedding sets that are customized to fit the bed. In this case, the size of a baby blanket for a crib corresponds to the standard 120 by 90 cm. If the crib is made to order or simply has different dimensions, then the blanket is chosen as follows:
- the length must correspond to the length of the mattress;
- the width should be 30-40 cm greater than the width of the mattress.
On sale you can find children's sleeping models 100 x 140 or 100 x 150 cm. There are rarer sizes, which allows you to choose a model for any crib.
Tips for selection and application
To choose the right blanket for your baby, you should listen to several basic recommendations.
It is better to go to a specialized store to purchase. There is no need to save on goods for your baby - his health, comfort and peace of mind depend on them.
The product you like requires careful inspection. The material and seams should be soft.
We must not forget about the individuality of a newborn. For active children, discharge envelopes or blankets are selected with many fasteners. This will make it much easier to get ready to go outside in the future. An energetic baby feels comfortable in an envelope with restrictive gathers to prevent twisting. For greater freedom in the legs, products with an extended lower part are chosen.
If the blanket can be used as a lining in the crib after discharge, it is hygroscopic and retains heat well. Models stuffed with down, wool or cotton wool are not suitable for children with allergies.
Sometimes manufacturers write “100% wool” or “100% bamboo” on the label. There may be a note at the bottom stating that the material is artificial. To avoid becoming a victim of deception, you need to carefully study the inscriptions, and also refuse blankets that are too cheap.
Before purchasing, you should check the strength of the envelope cover for discharge: carefully wrinkle it, beat the product. See if the insulation is coming out of it. This indicates low quality and insufficient wear resistance of the item.
It is better to prefer products that are not too aggressive in color. Calm, unobtrusive colors are suitable. Not only the aesthetic approach is important here: fabric dyed with bright dyes can negatively affect children's skin.
When using a blanket, do not overwrap the baby. Overheating at this age is a more frightening factor for him than hypothermia.
Standard sizes by age
After 2-3 years, the blanket that was purchased for the baby will already be small. At the age of 4 years, it is time for the baby to move to another crib, so the bedding should be different. Typically, blankets 100 by 140 cm or 110 by 140 cm are used. This option will be comfortable for children under 8-9 years old.
Schoolchildren will need a slightly larger size - 125 by 150 or 120 by 160 cm. This option can be used until adolescence, when rapid growth begins. During this period, a child can grow dramatically in just a couple of months; he will have to change not only his wardrobe, but also his bed.
But all children are different, so the choice is made taking into account the height and weight of the teenager. Usually, standard adult bedding measuring 140 by 200 cm is purchased. If the child is large and tall, then you can take a full Euro size adult blanket - 155 by 215 cm.
