Prepare the place
Most new apartments already have a flat floor; retractable structures will be durable. If the floor is uneven, try to level it.
It is also worth checking the walls and corners; there will be flaws in the place planned for the construction of the podium. The walls are checked for level. Exactly 90 degree angles are difficult to find, so do everything locally.
Before making a podium bed, remove the baseboard in the area of the future structure and set it aside. These strips will also be useful for finishing.
What is important to know when installing a podium
There are several requirements:
- the concrete structure is durable, but it is purchased only for a private house and placed on the ground floor;
- to increase the safety of the podium, it cannot be placed in the central part of the room or a passageway;
- if the bed must hide communications behind itself, then free access to them must be provided;
- You should not get carried away with massive products and install them on a wooden base - weighted versions can cause damage to partitions;
- You can’t save on material - the service life depends on the strength;

Installation and finishing of flooring
After the completion of the first stage of installation work, the turn of the flooring begins. Sheets of plywood or chipboard should be cut so that the joints are on the frame bars. Then attach them to the beams with self-tapping screws.
If the sheets used to mount the podium surface are large enough, then the attachment points should be marked in advance. If you want to get a more durable podium surface, you can use the coating material in two layers. The most convenient material for finishing the podium is carpet. It is attached to the surface with special glue and staplers.
The last step will be to install the casters on the base of the bed and install the mattress on it. After finishing work, the room will have comfortable sleeping places and enough free space.
How to assemble a podium bed yourself
Manufacturing the structure requires following step-by-step steps:
- Sketch - measure the volume of the room, choose the shape of the product and select materials. The drawing is created after checking the received measurements.
- Marking is done on the floor, it includes both the main contour and vertical supports with crossbars for secondary shelves. If the structure must be adjacent to the wall, then the plinth is removed from this part.
- Assembly - the podium itself, the pull-out bed and shelves are assembled separately. Fastening is carried out along the contour of the beam using 16 mm self-tapping screws.
- Install vertical supports - the length should be equal to the height of the product minus double the thickness of the beam. Fastening is carried out with metal corners; if the bed is in contact with the wall, then it is additionally fixed with dowels.
- Installation - cross beams and top trim are attached to the supports. If the size of the structure is large, then the longitudinal ones are secured again. The joints are reinforced with vertical supports.
- The boards are secured between the supporting parts (in the area where the shelves are installed) - the finished section resembles two wooden sidewalls with guides attached to them. If the box is on casters, then guides are not needed.
- The frame is covered with chipboard or plywood, the slabs are attached to the beams.
Assembly is completed by painting, sanding and varnishing. Before installing the structure, the floor is covered with carpet.
Experts recommend paying attention to finished products for the children's room. Some companies carry out preliminary measurements of the premises and create podiums exactly according to the obtained parameters. This approach allows you to get maximum free space, improve its appearance, and get rid of the feeling of clutter.
DIY podium
If you want to make an elevation in the bedroom with your own hands, you need to make several important calculations:
- calculate (at least approximately) the pressure on the floors;
- calculate the pressure on the podium itself.
On average, in an apartment the pressure on the floors will be 400-600 kg. per square meter, and the pressure on the podium itself will be 200-300 kg. per square meter.
First of all, you should prepare the area for the future podium and remove the flooring at the installation site. The next step is to install the elevation frame. Mount the bars at right angles to each other, and then fix them with screws or nails. Metal corners can also be used to securely fasten the podium elements.
If the podium does not have niches or storage systems, fill the internal space with foam plastic or mineral wool: this way you will be able to avoid the booming sound that may subsequently appear when walking on the surface of the podium. After the frame is made, you can begin covering it with plywood or other sheet materials. To do this, holes of a certain size are drilled in the beams and in sheets of plywood, into which fasteners are then inserted. Once you have finished covering the frame, you can begin laying the flooring of your choice.
Regardless of what kind of podium you make, solid (monolithic) or framed, be sure to use a laser or water level. Mark lines on the walls - they will indicate the upper boundaries of the future structure.
Decorative podium
How to make a frame for a decorative podium with unusual lines and shapes? If you want to make, for example, a border in the form of a wavy line, draw this line on the floor, and then place the bars along it. They should be located vertically, about fifty centimeters from each other.
The height of the beams is the height of your future decorative structure. This way the decorative, complex side of the podium is completed - and the rest of the frame can be made in the usual way. Boards should be installed on the vertical beams, which also bend and take the shape you need. Of course, these boards will be thin - after all, it is difficult, if not almost impossible, to bend dense boards.
How to complement and decorate the podium?
In order for your podium to be beautiful and functional, provide drawers in the frame for storing things (for example, bed linen, etc.), and also install electrical wiring. If you place several lamps on the decorative side of the podium, the effect will be amazing, especially in the evening and at night. The wiring runs inside the frame using a special corrugation.
As for storage systems, you can use either one large box or many small boxes where you can place absolutely any things you need. For example, a structure made on a wooden frame can replace a fairly large wardrobe or chest of drawers.
Creating a stylish and comfortable podium is quite a complex and responsible matter. Of course, implementing such a design in the bedroom yourself is only possible if you have certain skills in construction and repair.
