Russian and foreign standards
First, about Russian bed linen sizes and the table of standards. Strictly speaking, few enterprises strictly adhere not only to GOST, but to the generally accepted dimensional grid. Most of them produce several lines at the same time in order to “cater” to the whole variety of blankets. They “walk” relative to this very grid and each other by about 10 cm in one direction or another.

They produce sets that differ in parameters from our bed linen, and the sizes in the table below are based on averages for Italy, Germany, Austria, Turkey and China. We will make clarifications regarding the features characteristic of a particular country as the article progresses.

Duvet cover
The duvet cover should exceed the size of the blanket by about 4 cm. It is better to select bedding to match your existing bedding.

One and a half sets
At the moment, the minimum size that can be found on sale is 1.5 bedroom. For a single bed, even standard sizes of bed linen are not indicated anywhere except in old Soviet reference books. The usual equipment for a semi-truck is: a duvet cover, a sheet and 2 (most often) pillowcases. It is designed for 1 or two people and a sleeping place up to 120-140 cm. If you are interested in a single bedding set and its sizes, read a detailed article about it.
Important:
- The inscription Single or 1-bed on the package means that only 1 pillowcase is included.
- German and Austrian sets often come without a sheet, just a duvet cover and pillowcases.
- Italian ones often have narrow (with normal length) duvet covers, 140 cm wide.

Custom sizes
Today, many manufacturers produce special pillows for the comfort and health of consumers: orthopedic, for sleeping on the side/back/stomach, for traveling, with a cooling effect, with a memory effect and others.
Since most of these pillows initially have a non-standard shape, the pillowcases for them are designed and sewn by the same manufacturers. True, they usually cost much more than standard analogues. But on the basis of one purchased set, it is quite possible to sew a couple or three more sets of pleasant fabric yourself.
Double and Euro standard
The 2nd set has more sheets and duvet covers than the 1.5 bedroom set, and the number of pillowcases can be increased to four, with the additional two being decorative. The estimated width of the sleeping place is 140-150 cm. Double bed linen is most typical for Russia and China; it is rare, but found, made in Germany (without sheets). In other producing countries it is replaced by the Euro-standard size.
We described what types of 2 bedroom sets there are and their parameters in another article.
The Euro standard - also known as Queen bedding size - is usually the same even among different countries. The exception is Italy. Sets from this country may include a duvet cover 200x250 cm and a sheet 250x290 cm. The number of pillowcases here also varies from 2 to 4. Designed for a mattress from 160 cm wide. Many Austrian “Euro-standard” sets come without a sheet, here you need to be careful when choosing, see the link for more details.
Family
Surely you have heard the designation related to bed - “duet”, what is it? This is the so-called “family” set (more details at the link), it includes 2 “one-and-a-half” duvet covers, 1 large sheet and 2-4 pillowcases. For a sleeping place 160-180 cm. An excellent option when one of the couple (or both) likes to wrap themselves in a blanket.
The most common size of duvet covers in such bedding sets is 150x210, but if you want more, pay attention to Turkish products (160x220). But among the Austrian ones there may be short products. This is not a rule, but it is still worth paying attention to this point.
As an example, we have made a correspondence table for bed linen sizes: a selection according to the standards of different countries.
Match/Compare
Family | Duvet cover 2 | Sheet | Pillowcase |
Russia | 150x215 | 220x240 | 50x70 (2) + 70x70 (2) |
Italy | 155x210 | 230x250 | 50x70 (2) + 70x70 (2) |
Germany | 150x210 | 240x260 | 50x70 (2) + 70x70 (2) |
Austria | 150x205 | 230-250 | 50x70 (2) + 70x70 (2) |
Türkiye | 160x220 | 240x260 | 50x70 (4) |
China | 150x210 | 220x250 | 50x70 (2) + 70x70 (2) |
And this is what the family kit looks like:
Pillowcases
Pillowcases should be only a few centimeters larger than the size of the pillow. They can be square or rectangular in shape.

Euro-maxi – King size
The largest types of bed linen, the dimensions of which are suitable for beds from 180 cm wide. The dimensions of the duvet cover are standard for all countries (220x240), but the sheets may vary. The widest and longest are in Turkish sets: 270x310, 290x310, Russian ones, on the contrary, are most often 220x240.
Important! On packages of bed linen you can see the designation of parameters in the following form: 80x220+30, if we are talking about a sheet with an elastic band, and 50x70+5 (70x70+5), if we are talking about pillowcases with decorative piping.
This means:
- 80x220 is the size of the sheet according to the sleeping area, and +30 is the height of the sides that hug the sides of the mattress.
- 50x70 are the dimensions of the pillowcases, and +5 is the width of the decorative edging on them.
Large size bed linen, designated “Euro-maxi” in the photo below.
How to understand whether underwear fits or not?
Please note that duvet covers are presented in almost the same parameters in any set for a particular country, but bed sheets come in several sizes. Pillowcases can also come in several types and shapes depending on the country of origin. Bed sets are classified mainly by duvet covers.
Before purchasing bedding, measure your sleeping area. Measurements are made using a centimeter. Measure the bed from the head to the bottom lengthwise and from one end to the other across. Add 20 cm to the length results obtained, and 40 cm to the width for additional margin to account for the thickness of the mattress. The pillowcase should match the dimensions of the pillow, and the duvet cover should match the size of the blanket.
Teenage and children's
Teenage sets are close or completely consistent with the sizes of one-and-a-half - adult bed linen. Most often they differ only in color and number of pillowcases: in most cases there is one, less often - two. Turkish and Austrian sets are the largest, suitable even for an adult.
Additionally: you definitely need to know the types of fabrics and their properties.
Children's (“Nursery”, “For Newborns”) sets have a different ratio of the size of the bed (60x110, 60/65x120 cm) to the size of the sheet (100x120, 120x170). It is explained simply: the further the free edges of the sheet go under the mattress, the better it is fixed and the less chance the child has of “taking it away”. Sometimes soft bumpers and/or a stole are included as an additional option with children's bedding. Read more about the parameters of CPB for children in another article.
Bedding from Ali-Express
Since many of us order lingerie from this trading platform, we consider it necessary to give it a personal place in the article. All sellers have a sign with product parameters in the product description. Sizes of bed linen on aliexpress, table with symbols in centimeters:
View | Duvet cover | Sheet | Pillowcase (2 pcs) |
Single | 160x120 | 160x230 | 48x74 |
Double | 180x220 | 230x250 | 48x74 |
Euro standard | 200x230 | 230x250 | 48x74 |
It is not always indicated that in this color the set, for example, comes without a sheet. But still, do not forget that this is a specific place where everything needs to be double-checked more than once. Read the product description carefully:
- At the top of the product card there may be the words “cotton”, “natural”, and already under the line “Description” it is indicated “polycotton”, “cotton ...%, polyester ...%”.
- At the top of the product card there may be the words “set”, “bedding”, the photographs correspond to them, but the description clarifies that this is only one sheet.

Which material is better to choose
Manufacturers sew bed linen from natural, synthetic and semi-synthetic fabrics.
The most comfortable option is natural materials: linen and cotton. Cotton fibers are intertwined in different ways, so new types of fabrics appear - ranfors, percale, satin, calico and poplin. This fabric “breathes”, absorbs moisture well, retains its appearance for a long time and withstands frequent washing. Sometimes natural fibers are mixed with synthetic ones to increase the strength of linen and reduce its price. The more natural the bed linen fabric, the more pleasant it is to sleep on it.
Linens made from bamboo and eucalyptus fiber are an excellent option for allergy sufferers: they do not irritate the skin, do not cause allergic reactions and have bactericidal properties.
Synthetic bed linen is characterized by increased wear resistance and elasticity. The most popular synthetic material is rayon. However, synthetics do not allow air to pass through and disrupt body heat exchange during sleep and do not remove moisture well. Therefore, it is better to choose underwear with a low content of artificial fibers or give preference to natural fabrics.
Suitable - not suitable
Now let’s talk about how to determine the size of bed linen that is right for you. When choosing, you need to take into account the parameters of all its elements at once. Let's start with the sheets. She may be:
- Ordinary. The ideal option is the width of the sleeping place + the full height of the mattress with an increase of about 5 cm. Excessive length and width is acceptable for it: the larger the canvas, the smoother it lies and the less it gets confused.
- Tension. In this case, the packaging indicates the dimensions corresponding to the size of the bed. That is, if the sheet is intended for a 140x200 mattress, then you will see these numbers. Additionally, the height of the side is indicated (equal to the height of the mattress for which the product is intended).
A set with a fitted sheet will most likely cost more than a regular one. Such an overpayment will be fully justified by the ease of use of the bed sheet: the elastic band secures the sheet well on the mattress, preventing it from straying to the side. Read more about the parameters and types of sheets for a bed in another article.
The second is the size of the blanket. When choosing a duvet cover, consider:
- Reserve for possible shrinkage. For pure cotton and linen, it is better to make an increase of 5-7 cm, if the composition contains a significant amount of synthetics - about 3 cm.
- Maximum error. Up to 10 cm is not at all critical in the operation of the product. That is, if your blanket is 140 cm wide, and the duvet cover, judging by the inscription on the package, is 150 cm, it’s okay. A difference of more than 10 cm may cause some inconvenience.
And finally, pillowcases. Always pay attention to their sizes. In Russian sets they are standard, 70x70, and 50x70 are found only as an addition (in “Euro-standard” and “Euro-maxi”). In Chinese, the situation is most often the same. But underwear produced in other countries can only contain pillowcases 50x70.
Important: a good pillowcase should have a sufficiently deep flap (about 20 cm), or be fastened with buttons or a zipper. Unfortunately, the packaging only indicates the type of fastener or the inscription “valve”, without specifying the dimensions.
Useful tips
- If you can’t find a set with the right size, you can buy a sheet, duvet cover or a set of matching pillowcases separately.
- Before purchasing, check the quality of the linen by touch. If the seller allows it, you can open the package a little and evaluate the texture of the fabric, its density and softness.
- If you are sensitive to odors, pay attention to how the material smells - some chemical odors do not dissipate even after repeated washing.
- To check the composition of the laundry, squeeze the fabric in your palm. Crinkles will immediately appear on natural materials, while synthetic ones will remain smooth.
- Buy sheets with a reserve - they account for the main friction, so the fabric wears out faster.
- The most durable fabrics are cotton sateen and softened linen.
