Capitonné decor and its types
The carriage screed has been known for quite some time. Back in the mid-19th century, expensive carriages were decorated in this way. The screed symbolized prosperity and luxury. This decoration method was used mainly for royal luxury items. Capiton (as carriage screed is also called) has also found application in the design of walls and upholstered furniture. The most famous example made using this technique is the classic Chesterfield sofa or Karelia bed 160x200.
After some time, capitone lost its popularity. However, recently such decor has come back into fashion. Modern apartments are decorated using this technique. These can be walls, chairs, headboards, and many other interior items. Furniture with a carriage frame looks elegant and cozy. Some people believe that such beds can only be suitable for classic style. But products made using this technique will fit perfectly into modern, pop art, kitsch and modern room design.
You can choose a bed with a carriage frame in a furniture showroom, or you can decorate the headboard of the bed yourself. This does not require special knowledge; a novice master can do it. A little effort and patience will do the trick. The bed will be transformed and will look elegant. Before starting work, you need to decide which type of capitonné decor is suitable.
There are several types of carriage screed:
- Diamond-shaped;
- Square;
- Complex, with changing geometry.
Expensive, beautiful material, as well as buttons, rhinestones, crystals, and LEDs give the furniture a special chic and elegance.
Carriage tie
The carriage screed is again in fashion today, and not only in furniture upholstery, but also as an interior decoration. The popularity of carriage ties goes back several hundred years, since the times of French aristocratic carriages, comfortable and pompous. But not only aesthetics predetermined the boom of carriage screeds and the interest in them today - this type of finishing provides excellent sound insulation and retains heat. For furniture and decoration of quiet rooms in noisy panel houses, carriage “buffets” are practical, look quite appropriate and combine rationality with sophisticated romanticism. Ottomans and sofas, upholstery of bed headboards, all kinds of artificial leather crafts are always of interest to owners of houses and apartments. It’s even more interesting to do simple, but requiring care and patience, work with your own hands, choosing from a wide range of matte and glossy materials, satin or leather to suit your taste. An excellent hobby for the home craftsman, and a joy for everyone at home.
Similar technologies have been used for decades to decorate entrance doors, usually in dark colors - which has slightly reduced interest in their original and elegant forms. But today carriage ties are experiencing another renaissance. Wall and even ceiling decor, fragments and panels, various furniture upholstery, non-standard finds from home craftsmen - and at the same time clear functionality: do-it-yourself upholstered furniture, exclusive interior design without global costs, protection from neighbor noise. As an option, equip your own music room or cinema hall, where the sounds of the panel house and the street are not heard, and the music can be turned on as loud as you like. The soft screed dampens vibration, and with good acoustics, the sounds of musical instruments become softer and more natural.
Style Features
Beds with a carriage frame in the interior have the following features:
- The characteristic folds are the most important difference between capitonnes. They are formed between the buttons, forming diamonds or squares of different depths and sizes, which depend on the thickness of the foam;
- Buttons, carnations - come in a wide variety of designs and are also a distinctive feature of the carriage tie;
- Sophistication and elegance - the capitonné technique transforms pieces of furniture due to spectacular folds, expensive material and original buttons. In one room, using a carriage tie, you can arrange several armchairs, chairs and sofas. You can independently choose the material and color of the upholstery that suits the overall design of the room;
- Durability, reliability - such furniture is not difficult to care for, it is durable. Dust can be swept away with a special brush or removed with a vacuum cleaner. If necessary, voluminous upholstery is replaced with new one.

DIY headboard decoration
A carriage bed is a great addition to any style bedroom. Creating a beautiful headboard yourself is quite possible; for this you need to prepare all some tools and materials. Upholstery fabric, fittings, and other elements are always available and can be easily found in hardware stores.
Material
The first step is to decide on the type of fabric and its shade. When choosing a material, it is recommended to pay attention to the following points:
- The fabric must be strong enough. Thin upholstery material may not withstand the load and after a while begin to tear;
- It is recommended to give preference to plain fabrics. The fact is that a floral print or any other ornament will be partially hidden in the folds characteristic of the capitonné technique. Plain material will look more harmonious and sophisticated;
- You cannot skimp on furniture upholstery material. To make the headboard of the bed truly reliable and last for many years, you will need high-quality fabric. Genuine leather or eco-leather, furniture velvet or other durable luxury material are used;
- To make a headboard using the capitonné technique, you can choose one of the following types of fabrics:
- Jacquard - looks rich, is perfect for folds, holds its shape, has a large pattern;
- Chenille is a natural material characterized by wear resistance;
- Flock - a huge selection of colors, fabric with a small pile;
- Genuine leather is durable and looks luxurious;
- Eco-leather – holds its shape perfectly in folds, is quite soft, wear-resistant;
- Sheet foam rubber with a thickness of at least 5 cm is used as a backing.

Buttons
Buttons for the carriage tie are selected depending on the design of the room and the style of the piece of furniture itself. A variety of carnations with colored rhinestones or hats decorated with carvings look beautiful. You can even install LEDs, it will be unusual and very impressive.
It is not always possible to match buttons to the color or style of furniture. In this case, you can make them yourself. As an option, cover the buttons with fabric that is similar in tone and texture to the headboard upholstery material.
Buttons come in different types and may differ in color, shape, and size. It is important that they have a metal loop. Such buttons can withstand loads and do not break. Plastic loops are less durable and are not suitable for carriage ties.
What you need to know about the width of beds
As a rule, this parameter indicates how many people can comfortably fit on the bed - one person, two, or an adult with a child. Accordingly, these beds are called single, double or one-and-a-half beds. However, everyone’s build and habits are different, and the sizes of these products are different. More on this later.
Single beds
For domestic products, the width of a single bed can be 90, 80 or 70 cm. Both a child and an adult (not too heavy) can sleep well in such conditions. You won’t have to toss and turn or wake up from discomfort and cramped conditions.

By the way, the standard sizes of a single bed in Europe differ to a large extent - its width will be 90 - 100 cm. A similar bed from an American manufacturer, due to their system of measures, will have a size of 190/90 cm and will be labeled Twin. We produce beds called teenagers with these parameters.
So, if you want to buy a bed from America, but longer, ask for the Extra Long brand (otherwise, Twin X-Long). It will still be 99 cm wide, but its length will increase significantly - up to 203 cm.
Single beds
“One and a half” beds are usually called beds that are somewhat narrow for two, but simply luxurious for one. The width of such products usually varies from 100 to 140 cm. However, someone can argue about the tightness for two - for ardent newlyweds who love to sleep in an embrace, this size is sometimes most suitable.

Domestic sizes of a one-and-a-half bed are closer to European double beds with a width of 140 - 160 cm. If we compare with beds from America, then the Full model (otherwise, Double) will be closest in size. Its width is 137.2 cm and its length is 190 cm. The Queen model has more comfortable, “royal” dimensions: 152.4 cm in width and 203.2 cm in length.

Double beds
In this category, products less than 140 cm wide are not produced - so as not to be too cramped. In order not to disturb your other half when going to bed, a mattress with independent springs and a bed width of 160 cm is enough - it is the most popular today. Wider models are also available - 170 cm. For those whose build is quite fragile, you can buy products with a width of 155 - 150 cm.
And if you are not satisfied with the standard size of a double bed, and want something special, according to your own standards, then the manufacturer will be able to meet you halfway by making an individual bed (with a standard step of 5 cm). However, be prepared for additional expenses: a mattress, bed linen, which will also need to be ordered.
Europeans, when producing products for two, do not skimp on width - it can be 180 centimeters, or even up to two meters. In America, it is customary to call such boxes “royal.” Longer products are called Western King or California King. Their width is 182.9 cm, and their length is 213.36 cm. Well, the King and Standard King models are wider - 193 or 198 cm. Their length is 203.2 cm.
Stages of work
To make the process of making a bed with a carriage screed faster, it is recommended to first prepare all the necessary materials and tools.
You will need:
- Plywood - acts as a base from which the headboard of the chosen shape is cut out;
- Foam rubber - its thickness should be at least 5 cm. Foam rubber needs the same shape as plywood;
- Fabric - it should be 0.5 cm wider than plywood, and also 30 cm longer. The remainder will be used to cover buttons;
- Glue – necessary for attaching foam rubber to the headboard;
- Buttons - the most durable and durable of them - have metal loops;
- Sintepon - it is needed to cover the foam rubber on top.
Next you need to select the necessary tools:
- Drill;
- Drill;
- Furniture stapler;
- Button cord;
- Crochet hook;
- Knife.

Tools
For people who do not have experience in this type of work, it is recommended to use step-by-step instructions and diagrams. In this case, the carriage screed will be more neat, even and will transform the furniture beyond recognition. In order to upholster the head of the bed using the carriage screed technique, you must complete the following steps:
- The first step is to make a sketch. On paper they draw different options for what the upholstered surface of the headboard might look like;
- After choosing the most suitable option, they begin the pattern. To do this, cut out a fragment of the required size from a sheet of cardboard. It should match the headboard;
- Draw vertically and horizontally directed parallel lines. A distance of 10 cm is maintained between them. In this case, squares are obtained with a given side;
- At the points where the lines intersect, mark the places where nails or buttons will be installed in the future. Next, connect them with lines. If everything is done correctly, you get diamonds (squares);
- Holes for buttons are made in the tops;
- Next, begin assembling the base. Take a sheet of plywood and cut out the desired shape corresponding to the size of the furniture;
- Foam rubber of the same shape is glued to the plywood, wait until the glue is completely dry;
- Next, make the markings using a pattern. Using a felt-tip pen, pencil or marker, trace the contours of the holes made in the cardboard;
- Using a drill, holes are drilled using the existing marks. Their diameter should be 1-1.5 cm;
- The synthetic winterizer is placed on top of the foam rubber and the same holes are made on it;
- Cover the headboard with fabric.
The secret of a beautiful and elegant bed with a carriage frame is the correct upholstery technique. Under no circumstances should the fabric be allowed to warp or tighten. In this case, the upholstery will turn out uneven.
Next, they begin to install buttons (studs, rhinestones). To do this, you need to find holes through the stretched material and make small holes in their place. A drill with a thin drill bit will help with this. Cords are then attached to the rhinestone buttons or studs. From the wrong side they need to be pulled out using a hook or needle and secured firmly with a furniture stapler. If decorative nails are used, then they are carefully driven into the base. Both should be at the same depth in the upholstery fabric. After the work is done, all that remains is to carefully align all the folds with a stick or crochet hook.
The final stage will be the installation of the fasteners necessary to firmly install the headboard on the furniture. Hooks or brackets are made on the wrong side. Next, they are used to attach the headboard to the bed frame. If you want to update old wooden furniture in this way, you can use the “original” headboard. The main condition will be the absence of decorative carvings and other relief decor.
Making your own bed with a carriage tie should not take much time. The materials used in the work process are available. All the nuances can always be seen in master classes that explain how to make a smooth headboard using the capitonné technique. You can upholster other furniture in this way. For example, a pouf, an armchair, a banquette or a sofa. Spectacular interior items will complement the design of the room, making its image more complete and elegant.

What is the optimal bed length
If the person who chooses his future bed is of small or average height, then he has nothing to worry about. After all, it will fit perfectly in a standard two-meter bed. It’s another matter when a tall customer comes to the store - such a person needs more space in length for a comfortable sleep.
There is an easy way to determine the length of the bed that suits you; to do this, you need to add 30 cm to your height. However, if you love large pillows and sleep on your back, stretched out, you can add another 10 cm.
The most common standard bed sizes are 2 m and 1.9 m. The size 1.95 m is offered by manufacturers much less frequently. Well, exotic bamboo beds are also perfect for tall people - after all, they usually have a length of 2.2 m. By the way, the factory treats such clients with all attention, offering to lengthen the bed they like. Naturally, you will have to pay extra for this.

Standard ceiling height
For standard high-rise buildings, the minimum ceiling height is determined by the type of building, as well as the time of its construction. Apartments located in different parts of the country are identical to each other not only in layout, but also in standard ceiling heights, which may differ slightly by a few centimeters.
Stalinka ceiling height
This is perhaps the only option for buildings that are distinguished by a large scale. The height of the ceilings in such houses is approximately 3-3.5 m. Previously, ceiling spaces were often decorated with stucco elements to give the room additional comfort and harmony.
Khrushchev ceiling height
From the name it is clear that these residential buildings were built during the time of Khrushchev. They are represented by standard five-story buildings in which Russian families have lived for several decades.
These apartments have the following characteristics:
- the height from the floor to the ceiling space is small (a tall person can easily reach the ceiling surface with his hand);
- The apartment area is also small. So, the kitchen is 6 m², the rooms are 12-14 m².
The standard height in Khrushchev-era apartment buildings is 2.5 m, but thanks to the low ceilings, such apartments have some advantages:
- less money is spent on heating costs;
- The ceiling structures are made of reinforced concrete floor slabs and are therefore durable.
Brezhnevka ceiling height
Similar apartment buildings began to be built in the 70s of the 20th century. The average ceiling height in the rooms of such apartments is 2.5-2.7 m, and the total area of the entire housing reaches 80 m2.
These values make it possible to implement many designer decisions without the need to spend large amounts of money on repairs and finishing. With a distance from floor to ceiling of 2.7 meters, the ceiling space can be lowered by no more than 20 cm. Therefore, even complex hanging systems or two-level tension structures can be installed in such rooms.
Panel and block houses ceiling height
Their initial construction took place in the 80s of the 20th century. Such houses are characterized by the presence of a large number of floors, spacious rooms and kitchen facilities. The ceiling height in block buildings is 2.65-2.75 m.
Finishing ceilings allows you to use many different techniques.
Modern apartments ceiling heights
In modern new buildings, apartments are distinguished by a variety of layouts. On the real estate market you can find both luxury and economy class apartments. The main differences between them are the area and degree of comfort, which are directly related to the height indicator. For example, if this is a small studio apartment, then to save money, when determining the height of the ceiling surface, use the permissible minimum in a living room. As a rule, it does not exceed 2.7 m. Large luxury apartments boast ceilings 2.8-3.2 meters high.
It is better to entrust the renovation of apartments with high ceilings to designers. They will help you choose the optimal distance from the floor to the surface of the decorative structure, which will express the advantages of the finish and hide the disadvantages of the layout.
Private houses
Your own home provides endless opportunities for developing your imagination. Here you can already choose absolutely any layout and height of the rooms. Usually, the architect helps decide on the last indicator.
In order to avoid creating a feeling of emptiness, and to make the room cozy and comfortable, ceilings should be made no higher than 2.9-3.2 m.
Ceilings in private homes can be decorated in various ways. Tension fabrics or suspended ceiling structures are most often installed under wooden beams. Combined options are often used. With reinforced concrete ceilings it is allowed to use almost any finishing method - from traditional painting to the installation of complex systems.
Outbuildings and premises
For such premises there are no strict restrictions on h. It is determined by the functional purpose of the building. For example, for a sauna or bathhouse it is better to make the distance from the floor to the top smaller in order to reduce the time it takes to warm up the room.
