Types of cornices in the bedroom interior
There are types of designs depending on the appearance:
- Strings. Curtains are held in place by hooks or clips attached to a thin metal cord.
- Rod They are also called round or stick. Curtains move on grommets or rings.
- Baguettes - with a decorative strip. It covers the hooks and holder. Ceiling cornice
- Profile. Easily bend at any angle. Used to decorate bay windows and original layouts.
- Tire (rail). The curtains move along the channel on hooks. There are plugs at the ends.
- Multi-row, with a combination of several types.
The first three types play a decorative role along with curtains. Profiles and rails accentuate the curtains and create the effect of curtains falling from the ceiling. Multi-row ones combine the advantages of different designs.
According to the method of fastening, cornices are distinguished:
- wall;
- ceiling
The first ones are decorative, framing the window. Attached if there is a suspended ceiling. The second ones are functional, able to withstand heavy curtains.
Based on the number of rows in the curtain hanging system, they are divided into: one-, two-, three-strip designs. A 2-row cornice for a bedroom is designed for tulle and thick curtains, and a 3-row cornice is also for lambrequins.
According to the control method there are:
- manual;
- automatic.
The second option is used for Roman and Austrian curtains and blinds.
What materials are cornices made from?
The main materials from which curtain rods are made:
- tree;
- MDF;
- metal (steel, bronze, aluminum and alloys);
- plastic (expanded polystyrene);
- acrylic.
Made of wood and MDF
Among the wooden systems there are solids of pine, beech, larch, and ash.
More expensive ones are made from wenge and mahogany. Decorative carvings complement the luxurious decoration of the bedroom in the Rococo, Baroque, and Empire styles.
Wooden curtain holders are expensive and require careful care. MDF structures serve as a replacement for the array. They imitate any wood pattern. They are made with moldings, additions, and have an arched shape.
Made of metal
Metal systems can be industrial or hand-made (forging).
They vary in weight and price. They are made with gilding, patina, and decorated with precious or semi-precious stones and crystals.
Lightweight and practical metal - aluminum. Structures made from this material can take any shape along the bend of the window opening. More expensive analogues (steel or bronze) are strong and durable.
Made from polystyrene foam and acrylic
Plastic curtain rods have simple shapes and are practical. Due to their reduced strength, they are used for light curtains made of tulle, organza, and for attaching blinds.
Acrylic holders are a new product among curtain rods. Thanks to transparency, they create the effect of curtains falling in the air.
Aluminum
Aluminum ceiling cornice has been used for a long time, for many years. This is due to its relatively low price, lightness and durability.
The structure is coated on top with a special protective solution to increase wear resistance; this will maintain the original condition of the surface for a long time, even when used in rooms with high humidity.
Such curtain rods are quite flexible and can be used to construct complex curtain compositions.
Which cornice to choose for the bedroom
The choice depends on the following factors:
- the side on which the windows face;
- bedroom interior style;
- window opening shape;
- ceiling height.
Sunny or shady side
The windows of the room are located on the shady side and the apartment is on the third floor and above: string or stick options are used.
If the bedroom windows face south or east, you need thick curtains. The bar is massive, can withstand heavy weight, 2 or 3 rows.
Along the perimeter there are folds on the sides to prevent light from entering the room.
Design style
Depending on the interior of the bedroom, suitable designs are chosen.
- A classic design with an abundance of decorative elements, with plant motifs, requires a baguette or forged cornice with tips.
- Minimalism and hi-tech are decorated with hidden profile or string cornices.
- A metal cornice with eyelets will fit well into Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles.
- Ethnic and eco-style love natural materials. Wooden with rings or baguette designs look great in such a bedroom.
Important! Carvings on the strip are combined with patterns of wallpaper, upholstery, and textiles. So the baguette cornice will fit well into the interior.
Shape of walls and height of ceilings
A semicircular curtain rod is selected for a non-standard shaped bedroom. For example, if the window is in a bay window, use a semicircular ceiling-type cornice made of aluminum or plastic.
For low ceilings (2.6 m), choose a top mount. Otherwise, wall-mounted systems are suitable.
The best solution for the bedroom would be multi-row ceiling systems. They are versatile and practical. For installation, you need to know the dimensions and mounting methods depending on the type of ceiling.
Furniture, skirting boards, parts and accessories
Textures and textures also play a huge role in choosing the color of the cornice. If the handles on the doors and the chandelier are made of bronze, then the curtain mount should be chosen in this segment. Metallic gloss, such as chrome products, and the discreet shine of brushed metal, are recommended to be combined with gray shades in the design of the space. For gold accessories, it is better to choose a cornice in the same palette.
If furniture made of chipboard or wood, as well as baseboards and trim on doors, are made in a dark color, then the curtain rod should be in this color segment, and vice versa, this way you will avoid dissonance in the design. In modern styles (high-tech, techno), furniture made of glossy materials is often used for furnishings; cornices with metallic shades will look good here: shining polished stainless steel, gold, silver. Cornices in the color of bronze, brass, and aged gold are ideal for furnishings made of natural wood, especially in classic interiors.
When choosing between metallic and wood shades, it is recommended to look at the overall interior design. Sometimes a bright, shiny note needs to be added to a calm brown palette. And vice versa, if the room is already filled with details of metallic shades, then it is better, if not muted, then at least not to add shine.
Dimensions of ceiling cornice for the bedroom
To calculate the size of the structure, you need to add 200-400 cm to the width of the window opening. Half of this value is the length of the curtains on both sides of the window.
When you plan to cover a wall with curtains along with a window opening, the strip is calculated for its entire length, from corner to corner.
Methods for attaching a ceiling cornice in the bedroom
Depending on the type of system, the bar is attached differently. The installation method is affected by the type of coating.
Concrete
If the ceiling is finished with ordinary plaster, the standard method of fastening with dowels and nails is suitable:
- Cut the tire molding to size.
- Place all the elements on the cornice.
- Mark the attachment points, starting from the center, every 50–60 cm to the edges.
- Drill a hole in the cornice with a diameter slightly larger than the dowel head and screw it in to the base of the cornice.
- Insert another drill according to the size of the self-tapping screw and screw the screw into the base.
It is better to fasten, starting from the center, then from the two extreme points, after which you can screw in the remaining dowels.
The ceiling cornices in the bedroom, photos of which are presented below, have design features. Here the mounting to the ceiling occurs using brackets. This type of system is suitable if the bedroom wall has an outward bend.
To install with brackets, you need to assemble the structure and hang all the elements. Then proceed in stages:
- mark the location of the brackets along the entire length on the ceiling surface;
- attach the cornice to the place;
- screw the curtain hanging system.
There is another method: gluing the structure to liquid nails. Suitable for light curtains only.
Installation instructions:
- Mark the mounting points.
- Apply primer to the ceiling if the surface is loose.
- Degrease surfaces.
- Assemble the structure down to the plugs.
- Coat the base with glue and glue it.
It only takes a few seconds for the composition to “set”, but you can hang the curtains after 24 hours.
Drywall
For such structures, a butterfly dowel is suitable. It opens into the cavity of the drywall box and secures the cornice.
The sequence of actions is the same as for the bus one. Subtlety in fastening the dowels: to screw, you need to place the “butterfly” in the hole until it stops, then start screwing in the self-tapping screw.
Stretch ceiling
The installation diagram is different from the previous ones.
First, an embedded block is made under the film to install the cornice. They are located between the permanent covering and the tension covering.
Next they follow the algorithm:
- Mark the places where the cornice is attached to the suspended ceiling.
- Glue the polymer rings onto the film in the places where you plan to drill.
- Burn the rings. This will protect the film from damage.
- Hammer the dowels with the cornice into the holes of the polymer rings, starting from the center.
- Install the structure along its length.
Plastic
Plastic ceiling cornice is an inexpensive, widely available option. Both ordinary, inconspicuous models and massive variations, for example, with a baguette strip, are made from this material. This design impresses with its low weight.
Installation of a plastic cornice can be done even by a non-professional; this work can be handled by a person far from construction work.
How to choose the color of curtain rods in a bedroom interior
For a bedroom with low ceilings, choose a cornice that matches the main color of the curtains. This design will continue the line of curtains and visually lengthen the room.
A wall cornice in the tone of light wood or beige will fit into any interior, except black and white.
Ceiling types made of acrylic or plastic to match the ceiling are suitable for a bedroom of any color.
In other cases, the shade of the cornice is chosen to match the color of interior doors, flooring, and bedside tables.
Advice! If the bedroom has a luxurious chandelier or gilded wall sconces, the curtain rod is combined with these elements.
Curtains with lambrequin
Curtains with lambrequins - luxurious, lush and pretentious multi-layered structures made of fabric with flounces, fringe gathers and tassels have not yet left our bedrooms, but the lambrequins that are relevant this season (bandeau and openwork) are distinguished by a rather laconic design.
They are characterized by simple shapes with straight lines, fixed on a rigid base.
It is possible to combine any curtains with a lambrequin in a modern bedroom, from classic ensembles of drapes with curtains to avant-garde Roman blinds and fabric blinds.
They will need a profile cornice, preferably baguette, with several tracks (one for each layer of curtains).
