Recently, you can notice an increase in the popularity of bar stools with gas lift. It won’t be difficult to explain such a trend - a gas lift makes it possible to change the height of a bar stool. Consequently, such a piece of furniture will suit absolutely any visitor (regardless of his anthropometric data - height). However, unlike traditional bar stools, models with gas lift have a weak point. We are talking about the element that changes the height of the seat.
Tall bar stools – high bar stools must be combined with the bar counter itself. In order not to “fly over”, bar owners choose models with adjustable seat heights. Don’t be afraid to choose bar stools with gas lift. Even if the latter fails, you can carry out repairs yourself. Naturally, the gas cartridge cannot be disassembled - it is replaced entirely.
Is it possible to fix a gas lift?
Replacing the gas lift in an office chair is required if the foot does not respond to pressure and the chair is stuck in one position. Of course, it can be repaired, but only a complete replacement is allowed, since repairing certain parts will not bring results.

What is required to independently restore a bar stool with a gas cartridge?
First of all, purchase exactly the same gas lift as the one that failed. As a rule, there are no problems with this. Any furniture store has a whole palette of similar elements.
For disassembly you will need the following tools:
- rubber mallet;
- wrench;
- Screwdriver Set;
- a rubber shield or an ordinary rag.
Using a wrench and a set of screwdrivers, you will need to unscrew the seat itself. It is often separate from the main structure of the chair. If we are talking about plastic analogues, then you will have to remove everything together.
Next, raise the chair to its maximum height. Place your foot on the base of the chair and secure it securely. Using a rubber mallet, apply light blows to the foot of the bar stool, the vector of which will be directed vertically upward.
All it takes is a few well-placed slashes to dislodge the top of the bar stool.
Do I need to repair the gas lift or is it easier to buy a new one?
The price of such a part is not high, its main value is maneuverability and height adjustment. However, if such a mechanism breaks down, begins to turn poorly or sag, the easiest way is to buy a new one and simply replace it on your favorite chair. The manufacturer Barski provides a fairly large guarantee on the mechanisms used in the chairs, and therefore if, while following the operating rules, the gas lift becomes unusable, it will simply be replaced within a few hours.

Scheme and operating principle of gas lift
For everyone who wants to learn something new, we suggest familiarizing yourself with the diagram of a gas lift or pneumatic cartridge. Its operating principle is quite simple. The metal casing contains a cylinder in which a rod and piston move freely. The cylinder itself consists of two reservoirs, between which there is a special valve that can be opened or closed. When the chair is in its lowest position, the piston is located at the top of the cylinder. When we press the lever to raise the chair, it presses on a button that opens the valve between the chambers. At this moment, gas from tank 1 begins to flow into tank 2 and put pressure on the piston, which slowly lowers, thereby raising the chair. When you release the button, the valve closes, gas can no longer move through the cylinder and the chair is locked in that position. When you sit down in the chair and press the lever to lower the chair, you open the valve again, with your weight you act on the cylinder, it goes down, the piston goes up pushing the gas back into the external reservoir, while the chair smoothly goes down.
Functions performed by a gas piston:
1. Height adjustment of the chair (gas lift stroke depends on its size) 2. Torsion around its axis, in both directions, 360 degrees 3. Spring function when sitting in the chair, relieves sudden load on the vertebrae
It is necessary to mention such an important part of the gas lift - the bearing, which allows the piston and cylinder to rotate around its axis, thanks to which the office chair can perform rotational movements.
A large iron body serves to support the stem in the correct vertical position.
In the figure you can see a diagram of the gas lift, as well as its disassembled image.
The class is distinguished by the wall thickness of the middle tube and the outer tube.
Class 3 - 2.0 mm - usually for seats up to 120 kg
Class 4 - 2.5 mm - usually for seats up to 150 kg
Gas lift casing:
This part comes with the set as a decorative one, which covers the black glass itself and makes the bottom of the chair more complete. For chrome-plated pneumatic chucks, a telescopic case is not provided and is not supplied in boxes. This is done so that the chrome crosspiece is a single unit, and the entire bottom is metal.
PS Be careful, the gas cartridge itself (this is usually a shiny rod) contains gas under high pressure! Damage to it should be avoided. It is not recommended to open it!

It's called a punch. But in the video they used a hex socket head, it seems, 32 mm

Hello, Nikolay. It is 100 percent likely that the gas cartridge on the chair has failed. This problem can be solved by purchasing a new gas lift and replacing it.
Vertical lifting mechanism
There is only one drawback of folding mechanisms - if you are below average height, you will have to, if not jump, then constantly stretch out in order to “hook” the door that is thrown high and close it. Well, European manufacturers of premium-segment fittings have also provided for this: lifting the facade vertically along the body will be more convenient and practical for you.
The modern furniture industry has many types of furniture hinges. These are both four-hinged hinges and ordinary hinges, which were used back in Soviet times. And although modern hinges are an order of magnitude better quality than their predecessors, they are not always suitable for our purposes. Types of furniture hinges that are used today in the production of cabinet furniture:
These loops are universal. They are able to withstand heavy loads and have a significant margin of safety. Four-hinged hinges are available for installing doors with an opening angle from 92° to 165°; hinges can be adjusted in three planes. Such fittings consist of two elements. The first is the hinge itself, which is attached to the door, and the second is the mounting plate, which is attached to the side wall of the product and is subsequently connected to the hinge on the door. In furniture production, four types of four-hinged hinges are actively used, each of which is designed for a specific type of fastening of the door relative to the product itself. The first type of hinge is an overhead hinge; it is used if the door covers the sides of the niche in which it is located. The second type is a semi-overlay hinge, used if two doors fit onto the same side of the product.
Why the gas lift of the chair broke down - the main reasons
The task of any gas lift is to ensure a soft landing for the user, reduce the rigidity of the seat and provide the required height of the chair. If the seat lowers under the weight of a person, or vice versa, does not fall, or suddenly jumps up, this indicates a malfunction.
In 85% of cases, the breakdown of such a part is due to improper use by the user of the furniture:
Gas lifts break down most often due to improper operation.
Restoration process. Step-by-step instruction
Restoring chairs is a process consisting of several stages. The quality of the final result depends on the competent implementation of each of them.
Furniture repair is carried out in the following sequence:
Restoration of a chair can be carried out with complete or partial disassembly. In some cases, to fix it, it is enough to tighten the bolts and refresh the varnish.
Deep restoration: frame restoration and upholstery reupholstery
Repairs and alterations with complete disassembly of the product are carried out in cases where it has mechanical damage to the frame and upholstery, as well as when the external finish is worn.
Deep restoration of wooden chairs is carried out in the following sequence:
The final step is to replace the soft part. Natural and synthetic materials with sufficient strength and wear resistance are used.

How to disassemble it yourself?
Remaking a chair with play or mechanical damage begins with disassembling it.
The difference between gas lifts for chairs and other furniture shock absorbers
Gas lifts for office chairs differ from similar furniture ones in that they have the ability to adjust the position of the seat. Using a pneumatic chuck, you can raise and lower the chair. They also work as a shock absorber, reducing the load on the spine. For swivel chairs, a gas lift is used, where the piston and rod are connected using a bearing. Therefore, the rod rotates easily around its axis. Gas lifts for drawer doors operate in one plane and do not require a bearing in the piston. They also differ in terms of compression strength per kilogram of weight. For example, in a gas lift of a drawer door, its weight and width are taken into account, and in a chair, the weight of a person is taken as a basis.
How to restore an old chair with your own hands
Over time, the appearance of interior elements loses its presentability. Old furniture should not always be scrapped and thrown into a landfill. An old chair can last for many more years if you approach the issue of its restoration correctly. In some cases, items are treasured as keepsakes, but are either broken or don't match the style of the room. There are several ways to repair chairs yourself. To do this, there is no need to purchase expensive materials and equipment. Everything you need can be found in cabinets and home pantry.
Repairing the seat of a Viennese chair.
Apply the prepared glue in a thick layer to the base of the chair seat,
especially on the wide part of the base where the front legs are attached.
Using specially cut oval overlays, we secure the glued nodes with clamps.
At the same time, it is clear that supports for the clamps should also be placed from below.
To secure the glued back part, you have to partially disassemble the chair. Remove the backrest element and the rear leg.
Now we clamp this knot with a clamp.
We send the chair to dry.
Carefully remove excess glue.
This is the picture we got.
A day later, after the glue has set, we finish the work. We cover the lower part of the seat and reinforcement elements with stain.
And we varnish the outer part of the seat. To make the chair look more attractive, I varnished the armrests and the side of the seat base. In my case, one coat of varnish was sufficient. The result is the following:
At this point, after the varnish has dried, the repair is completed. In principle, if it were not for the time spent on technological drying of the glue, the repair would not have taken so much time. I remind you that the varnish must dry and gain strength. This will usually take at least three days.
This concludes my next story, thank you for your attention,
