Slatted bed bottom, what are the differences between different types, how to choose

Most Ikea beds do not have a slatted bottom; you choose what you like and can afford. I'll tell you about Luroy, the cheapest slatted bottom.

When all members of our family began to have problems with their backs, and subsequently with sleep. They began to look for the root of evil and found old sofas. My husband and I decided to buy beds and new mattresses for all family members. I’ll tell you about the bed and mattresses separately later.

Because the lion's share went on beds and mattresses, they decided there was no difference between a cheap slatted bottom and an expensive analogue. How wrong we were then

The bed is assembled, the mattress is straightened and now it’s time for a test drive. I lie down on the bed and tears begin to flow, but not from joy, but from grief. There is a wild creaking noise at every turn, and our youngest daughter and I will have to sleep on this bed.

They began to look for the root of evil. The springs do not creak and the mattress was twisted in every way. The bed too. And they found that the slats slide along the metal corner and make a squeaking sound when they are loaded. They didn’t wait and believe that it would go away on its own.

In general, screwing the rails did not help.

Padding paper, too.

For two days we thought about it and read a bunch of forums where people have the same problems. A solution has been found. Plastic corner for windows. We cut it and put it on slats and happiness came into our dream. Now there was no fear of waking up my daughter when turning at night.

The most interesting thing is that the eldest daughter has no such problems on a 90 cm bed, but from a width of 120 cm they begin.

In general, if you take a bed from 120 or 140 cm wide, it is better to buy a more expensive slatted bottom, and with this there is a chance of a musical sleep, or even worse, when engaged in marital duty, you may end up on the floor because There have been cases of their breakdown. Or if you are not a fragile person.

But it’s great for children’s beds. That’s why I can say that I can’t say it’s really bad and I won’t recommend it; it’s not worth the money because... miser pays twice.

Flat bottom

A flat base for a bed is created on the basis of plywood, boards, chipboard or fiberboard. It is believed that these structures have already become obsolete, since they are not very comfortable, rigid and imperfect, since if there is no support, the base will sag under the weight of the mattress, and depressions will appear. Agree, sleeping on such a bed is not the most pleasant. The solid bottom has not become widespread because there are no holes in it. This means that the mattress will not be ventilated. On the other hand, if packed tightly and installed correctly, the bed will not creak.

On slats

A slatted bed base is a metal or wooden frame to which slats are attached at a certain distance. The good thing about such a bottom is that it is ventilated; moreover, such designs most often come complete with a bed. This type of bed base is available in several types - with switches, clips, and varying degrees of flexibility. It is believed that this design has unique properties, and sleeping on such a bed is a pleasure. But in reality, the bed base is needed to ensure the strength and quietness of the bed and the ventilation of the mattress itself.

Skruvsta computer chair

Skrewst Chair

The Skruvsta chair is one of the oldest models of IKEA computer chairs. It has an attractive design and fits perfectly into a Scandinavian interior, but the quality of the chair's construction is unsatisfactory. Buyers complain that the chair takes up too much space, it is awkward and inactive, some note that it is inconvenient to work behind it. And frequent use leads to back pain. In addition, faux leather options wear out quickly, rendering the chair unusable.

Selection rules

You need to choose the slatted base for the bed correctly, since otherwise the mattress will be wavy and will have to be constantly turned over. To begin with, we note that all modern bases are of two types:

  1. With shock-absorbing components, when the end of each board is equipped with special shock absorbers, the task of which is to support the mattress and reduce the load on it under the influence of the body.
  2. With racks without shock absorbers. Such structures will not bend if the load on them is increased.

Manufacturing materials

Slatted bases are made from different materials. Steel lamellas are characterized by increased strength; they are designed for a person with a large body weight. Also, steel slats can be installed in double models. As a rule, not only the lamellas themselves are made of plastic, but also the holders for them. Such devices are not highly resistant to heavy loads, and the fasteners are significantly inferior in quality to rubber fasteners.

Options for mattress sizes for beds, selection criteria

The most common material for making slatted bottoms is wood. The most suitable types of natural raw materials are presented below:

  1. Birch. The slats are made from wood that is 20–45 years old. This is a fairly flexible and durable material with a yellow tint and is easy to process.
  2. Linden, poplar. An inexpensive option, but strong and flexible at the same time. When operating in conditions with high humidity, you must choose products with a special protective coating.
  3. Beech. Used in the manufacture of luxury furniture. This is an expensive wood, found in yellow, red or white shades. Plastic raw materials do not deform under high loads, so curved parts are often made from it. The tree is resistant to changes in temperature and humidity.
  4. Ash. The array of a beautiful light shade is quite durable and elastic. If the drying technology is followed, the wood will be resistant to aggressive external factors. The material has low thermal conductivity and ease of processing. Ash is an expensive type of wood; slats for beds of the highest price category are made from it.

Regardless of the material of manufacture, the slats are laid on the bottom of the bed at equal intervals (from 5 to 7 cm). The width of each lamella varies from 3 to 12 cm. The minimum number of elements is 15 pieces.

With mechanism

A separate type includes the bottom, which has a rising headboard. Such designs will appeal to those who like to watch TV or read a book on the bed. The same beds are installed for bedridden patients who need to support their body vertically. This type of base has either a manual lift or an electric lift, which is started from the remote control.

Most often, the lifting mechanism is equipped with a linen box, which is obtained by lifting the base. There is enough space here to store bedding, linen, and household items.

Should I or not?

A bed base is not always needed. So, if you have a classic spring mattress, you should not lay it on a lattice base base. It is also important to respect the height of the gap that is formed between the surface on which we sleep and the floor. This is an important factor, especially for allergy sufferers. The ideal height is considered to be 65-70 cm, so when choosing a bottom you also need to take into account the thickness of the mattress. This height is good for other reasons:

  1. The grate under the bed will become less clogged and easier to clean.
  2. This height makes it easy to get out of bed.

Dimensions and parameters

The dimensions of the slatted bottom completely depend on who the sleeping place is intended for.

Bed typeOptimal dimensions of the slatted bottom
SingleSuch beds are purchased for one user. Their sizes are 80x200, 90x200, 100x200. The size of the slatted day for them should be 70x190, 80x190 and 90x190 cm, respectively.
One and a halfIts dimensions vary from 120x200 to 140x200 cm. Accordingly, the slatted bottom can have dimensions of 110x190, 120x190, 130x190 cm. Under such conditions, more comfortable sleeping conditions are guaranteed, but this product can only be used by one person.
DoubleIt is used by two people, so it must have not only the optimal length, but also a significant width. The slatted bottom for a double bed will be 150, 160, 170 cm wide and 190 or 200 cm long.
Children's bedProducts for children should be specifically selected depending on the height of the child. The length should be 20 cm greater than the baby’s height, so if the child is 120 cm tall, then it is optimal for the bottom length to be 140 cm. You can also purchase products for growth, so often a single bed for adults is taken. Standard bottom sizes for children's beds are 80x140, 80x150, 80x160, 80x180, 80x190 cm or 90x140, 90x150, 90x160, 90x180, 90x190 cm.

Often the frame is selected individually for a specific user. In this case, the following product parameters are taken into account:

  • The length should exceed the person’s height by about 20 cm;
  • The minimum width for a single-bed design is 70 cm, for a one-and-a-half-bed design - 120 cm, and for a double-bed design - 160 cm;
  • The mattress is selected so that it is approximately 5 cm narrower than the base;
  • The height of the structure should vary from 60 to 70 cm;
  • The legs must be made of durable material, since the strength and stability of the entire structure depends on them, and their height should be within 25 cm.

Thus, when choosing a bed with a slatted bottom, it is important to take into account the numerous parameters of this design.

Orthopedic base

The orthopedic base for the bed is a contour made of a metal pipe, complemented by elastic bent-glued elements based on birch veneer and durable holders that secure the slats to the frame. The orthopedic effect has a beneficial effect on the body, relieves the spine, providing comfortable sleep. A well-thought-out design of the base ensures that the mattress will follow the topography of the body, favorably influencing the health of the person lying on it.

The strength of the bed base depends on how many slats it contains. The optimal quantity is considered to be 15 pieces or more, and the distance between the slats should be equal to the width of one slats. The fastening of the lamellas can be different - mortise, overhead plastic or overhead rubber. Rubber holders have proven themselves well, giving a feeling of comfort and having an orthopedic effect.

Which slats to choose?

The bottom of the mattress consists of lamellas, which differ in both width and methods of fastening. Wide lamellas are either mortise or overhead. The advantages of these varieties include an affordable price, but the mortise frames begin to creak over time, and the mattress covering layers are deformed where the slats meet the frame. Bed bases with wide slats are suitable as a base for springless mattresses. They are placed either in a bed box or used as a separate sleeping place.

The production of such crossbars is carried out from high-quality materials, primarily beech and birch wood. Metal or wood are used to make the frame. Orthopedic bases can be additionally equipped with legs, or can be supplied without them. Lattices with wide slats are ideal for mattresses that will last a long time in use. In addition, high-quality ventilation will be provided.

Bed bases that have narrow slats are suitable for both springless and innerspring mattresses. These products are popular due to their versatility and a greater number of support points, which guarantees uniform loading and protects structures from deformation. Transformable crossbars with narrow slats are especially convenient to use.

Pros and cons of the design

Any bed consists of a frame and a base. The latter is most often formed from wood, high-quality steel or cheap composite materials. The correct choice of this element determines how comfortable it will be to use the structure for its intended purpose. The slatted bottom of beds is considered an excellent choice for children and adults, as it has an orthopedic effect.

Such structures are usually equipped with orthopedic mattresses. This combination provides ideal conditions for complete relaxation. Typically, such a bottom is represented by a durable frame of increased rigidity. Slats, otherwise called lamellas, are attached to it. They can be straight or slightly curved. They are attached at the same distance from each other.

The main advantages of the slatted bottom include:

  • Such bases are distinguished by high ventilation parameters, since air easily penetrates to the mattress through the distance between the slats, so the product will last much longer and will also have ideal hygienic properties;
  • Wood is most often used for the manufacture of lamellas, so the resulting products have high environmental parameters, which guarantees the product is hypoallergenic and non-toxic;
  • The bottom itself is considered not too expensive, and it is often part of the bed, so you don’t have to find and install it yourself;
  • They often produce an adjustable slatted bed bottom, which allows you to raise or lower it slightly, choosing the most comfortable position;
  • The bottom, consisting of lamellas, can be easily disassembled, so repair is considered a simple process.

The most affordable models are those in which the slats are made of birch or pine. Although such a base does have many positive characteristics, there are also some disadvantages that must be taken into account during the purchase. These include:

  • There is no rigid support between the slats, so after a few years waves appear on the mattress;
  • If shock absorbers are not used in the manufacture of such a structure, then the base will not be able to withstand significant loads, therefore such models are intended exclusively for people with low weight;
  • A springless mattress is not used with such a base, since after a short time it will develop deflections that will have a negative impact on the spine;
  • The slatted base lasts no more than 10 years, which is much shorter compared to the service life of other types of bottom;
  • Individual slats may break under high point loads or other factors, so owners of such products often have to spend money on repairs.

Innovation systems

Modern bases for beds are slatted ones, which have metal or bent-glued slats. This frame has an all-welded structure with legs, which can become an alternative to a bed. The best option is a metal frame, which is complemented by wooden slats. Equipping with lath holders is a definite plus, as the anatomical characteristics of the sleeping place are improved.

No less popular are bases that have adjustable stiffness: they are placed in the lumbar area, making it possible to adjust the elasticity of the mattress and its hardness in accordance with individual preferences. Such designs are suitable for people of different sizes and provide increased comfort.

Popular brands

Modern brands offer a wide selection of bed bases of different sizes and designs. Among the popular ones is an orthopedic base for a bed 160x200. This standard size is always available from many companies. Thus, DreamLine brand gratings can improve the orthopedic properties of different types of mattresses - with and without springs. The design is based on a metal frame, complemented by wide crossbars in the form of birch lamellas. Equipped with a mortise system of lath holders for lamellas.

The orthopedic bed base 160x200 Benartti Orto Max is designed for all types of mattresses, including those with a large number of springs and spring blocks. The grille has an all-metal welded frame and is complemented by narrow slats made of birch wood. The advantage of this base is the overhead lat holders, which, coupled with narrow lamellas, ensure accurate drawing of body contours. The peculiarity of the overhead structure is that it increases the strength of the base and reduces the noise level. Bed bases of this brand enhance the orthopedic effect, which is ensured by flexible slats made of multi-layer wood. This protects the mattress from deformation, extending its service life.
