To create a beautiful home interior, large financial investments are not necessary. Of course, exclusive, original works cost a lot, but if you like handicrafts, then it’s time to show your imagination. After all, even a simple lampshade for a chandelier can be made special.
Lamp in minimalist style
For a room with a laconic design, it is best to choose decorative elements in the same style. For example, a minimalist wire lampshade looks very original.
To make it yourself you will need:
- wire;
- watering can;
- light bulb socket;
- switch;
- pliers.
We wrap the watering can with wire, starting from the top. When the lampshade of the required size is made, cut the wire with pliers. We pass the switch through the spiral.
The unusual lampshade is ready!
If desired, you can make lampshades of different shades and combine them in one composition.
What can be used: pros and cons of materials
The kitchen is one of the functional rooms of a house or apartment, often used not only for cooking, but also for receiving guests, so the design of this room is as important as the technical requirements for it.
When choosing a chandelier for kitchen lighting, you need to consider:
- Humidity. During the cooking process, this indicator increases significantly, and due to the operation of ventilation and exhaust hood, humidity can fluctuate within significant limits.
- Temperature. As in the first case, using a stove and oven can lead to an increase in room temperature. According to the laws of physics, warm air rises. As a result, the temperature under the ceiling above the stove during intensive cooking can reach 55-60°C.
The components for the future chandelier must be selected taking into account these features of the kitchen.
One of the best materials for a DIY kitchen chandelier is wood. It is safe, natural, and does not release toxins when heated. The varnish coating increases its moisture-resistant properties, and the interesting texture allows it to become an accent or fit organically into the interior of any kitchen.
The main disadvantage of wood is its low fire safety and susceptibility to insects. In the first case, it is enough to follow the rules and not place the device over an open source of fire; in the second, treat the surface of the wood with a special agent. When using this kind of chandeliers in the kitchen, it is better to place them in the dining area.
Wicker chandeliers made of wool and cotton threads or twine are attractive due to their simplicity of design and manufacture, as well as their versatility. They can be of different sizes, colors or shapes. Their main advantage is lightness. As for the disadvantages, the main ones are the same low fire safety as wood and the danger of rotting due to constant exposure to moisture.
Kitchen lamps made of plastic are easy to install due to their light weight and wash due to the characteristics of the material. Such chandeliers are not afraid of moisture, but react to high temperatures (they can melt), so their placement requires a significant distance from ovens and stoves. The situation is similar with CDs, which, thanks to their texture and color, look great in a disco or fusion interior.
A chandelier made from glass jars and bottles is one of the best options for the kitchen. It is moisture resistant, fireproof, not susceptible to pest attacks, and non-toxic. It can be placed in any part of the room, and it will organically fit into almost any style, except the classic one.
It is generally better not to use structures made of paper and cardboard in the kitchen.
Volumetric shade
To make such an item yourself, you do not need to purchase expensive materials. After all, even a simple Chinese lantern can look good if it is decorated correctly.
We will prepare the following materials:
- Chinese lantern;
- fabric or paper for decoration;
- tape or glue.
Cut out circles of the same size from paper or fabric. Starting from the bottom, glue each of them in turn, as shown in the photo.
It is very important to glue only the top part of the circles so that the ceiling looks airy as a result.
We place the circles slightly overlapping.
The result is a lampshade that resembles a cone. It looks really very interesting.
Selecting a lamp and socket
Regardless of the design and material of the chandelier, when choosing light bulbs, it is best to choose LED and halogen options. They are characterized by a longer service life, but most importantly, they do not heat up when consuming electricity. It is important given the low fire resistance of most materials for decorating a chandelier yourself.
The situation is similar with cartridges. The best choice is ceramic or porcelain products, which have the highest heat resistance, which is important in the kitchen. As a rule, they are impact-resistant, aesthetically pleasing and come in a wide variety of shades. Even more impressive is the range of cartridges made from heat-resistant plastic. Their main advantage is their low price.
Eco-friendly lampshade made of wooden strips
Every year the topic of eco-design becomes more and more relevant. Products in this style are often used in cafes or other large spaces. Therefore, we propose to create an unusual lampshade that is perfect for the interior of a cottage, house or modern apartment.
Let's prepare:
- veneer strips;
- glue;
- large paper clips;
- pen;
- scissors;
- lamp;
- cardboard.
We twist a strip of veneer into a circle of the required size. Lubricate the joint with glue and secure with a large pin.
We continue to do the same using the remaining veneer strips. The result should be a spherical shape. Don't forget to fasten the parts with glue.
If there are thin strips, skip them in a checkerboard pattern. We secure them with glue and paper clips.
We leave the product to dry, and in the meantime we take cardboard and a set for the lamp.
Trace the cap on cardboard and cut it out. We place the cartridge in the cardboard so that the base is on one side and the thread is on the other. We connect the parts together, as in the photo.
Carefully thread the cable with the light bulb inside the lampshade.
Glue the cardboard base for the cartridge to the lampshade and secure it with a paper clip.
We check the reliability of fastening of all parts. Make sure that the lamp does not touch the lampshade.
Options for creating a masterpiece
There are many ways to make lamps from a wide variety of components. Even a beginner can make an original chandelier with his own hands. All that is required for this is to prepare all the materials and carefully follow the sequence of actions described in the instructions.
Lamp made of threads
One of the easiest to make is a lampshade for a chandelier made of thread or twine. To work with it you will need:
- wool, thick cotton threads or thin jute;
- cartridge;
- a bottle of PVA glue;
- brush;
- petrolatum;
- balloon.
The last element will become the basis of the lampshade. To do this, you need to inflate it to the required volume and coat the entire surface with Vaseline. Next, you should pour glue into a deep container and place a skein of threads there, waiting until they are completely covered with the composition.
Then you can carefully begin winding the twine around the ball. During work, it is necessary to adjust the winding density. After complete drying (24 hours), the ball carefully bursts and is removed from the lampshade. A place is cut into the design for a socket (of the same diameter), after which the chandelier is ready for use.
As an additional decor, you can paint the lampshade from an aerosol can or add decorative elements.
Lace option
The lace lampshade is made according to the same principle and with the same tools as the classic thread base.
Only here the main material is openwork napkins, carefully glued to the surface of the ball.
All other actions are similar.
Fabric lampshade
The classic frame in the shape of a cylinder or cone is best suited for working with textile lampshades. The fabric for a chandelier in the kitchen should be quite rigid, dense, but at the same time light. It can be taffeta or thick cotton. Using the color of the textile, you can adjust the type of lighting.
To work with the lampshade you will need:
- a simple pencil and ruler;
- textile;
- threads and safety pins;
- universal glue;
- thick paper.
The algorithm of actions will be as follows:
- Draw a template on paper, cut it out and attach it to the frame, checking that the dimensions match.
- Secure the paper blank to the fabric with pins from the wrong side of the material. Trace it, make allowances (1.5-2 cm) and cut it out.
- Fold the edge allowances along the fold line and sew on a machine, then carefully iron the cover.
- In a well-ventilated area, apply glue to the places where the fabric comes into contact with the frame and glue the “pattern” to the base. When “wrapping” the lampshade, the material must be stretched to avoid folds and wrinkles.
Important! For better adhesion, you can wrap the wire frame with cotton tapes, onto which the fabric will be glued.
After all the manipulations, you need to let the lampshade dry for at least a day, after which you decorate it or mount it in the same form on the kitchen ceiling.
Glass jar chandelier
Glass is a material that is suitable for a kitchen in all respects. A chandelier made from cans or bottles will fit perfectly into a loft, minimalism or urban design style.
The method of manufacturing such a device is not complicated. You will need:
- 3 jars with screw caps;
- hanging cords and light bulbs (3 pieces each);
- hammer with nail.
Origami lampshade
A stunningly beautiful lampshade made using the origami technique will definitely be a bright accent in the room.
Materials for production:
- paper bags;
- scissors;
- wire with switch;
- glue;
- awl;
- threads;
- LED lamp.
We cut off the handles and the bottom of the bag, and then glue the parts together.
Fold the bag into an accordion shape to create at least 16 folded strips. We bend the two outer strips diagonally. We continue to follow the instructions in the photo.
We pierce the paper with an awl to secure the parts with thread.
It may not be possible to fold such a lampshade using the origami technique right away, but don’t give up. After all, the result is truly amazing!
Black candelabra
Nothing makes a bolder statement than a black chandelier. Regal, confident and endlessly stylish, black is the color that elevates the entire design in one stroke. Here are some tips when decorating with black chandeliers:
simple, sweeping shapes look breathtaking in ebony; Since dark fixtures attract attention, it is better to err on the smaller side as the subject will still receive a large visual impact;
black goes well with almost any color, but to make the product look organic, it is better to complement it with at least one or two other black elements.
Black is the color that elevates the entire design in one stroke
You'll love how a dark chandelier can transform your space, just choose a look that complements your style.
Lampshade from a bowl
Sometimes it can be difficult to find something ideally suited to the interior. If you are faced with such a problem, we suggest making a very interesting lampshade with your own hands.
We will prepare the following materials:
- bowls;
- lamp set;
- knife;
- drill;
- screwdrivers.
We trace the ring from the cartridge at the bottom of the bowl and cut it out.
We connect the parts together as shown in the photo.
Make a small hole in a small bowl to allow the wire to pass through tightly. The original lampshade is ready!
"Shabby chic"
Shabby chic chandeliers and floor lamps look elegant and airy. They let in a lot of light and are ideal for the living room.
Materials:
- Two or more wire rims.
- Threads.
- Beads of different sizes and colors.
- Thin chains and much more suitable for decoration.
Operating procedure:
- To begin with, you need to decorate the rims so that no wire is visible in the finished product.
- You can use ribbons or thick threads for this. String beads on pre-cut threads in different orders.
- Also, prepare pieces of chains of the desired length. After this, the decorative elements are fixed to the frame made of rims.
- The threads and chains are pressed tightly together, and the bottom edge should hang freely.
- If you want to make a denser lampshade, place a fabric base under the threads.
Paper lampshade
To create such a lampshade, we will prepare:
- paper of any color;
- glue;
- compass;
- paper clips;
- LED lamp;
- fishing line;
- wire with switch;
- scissors;
- colored yarn.
Using a compass, draw semicircles on paper no more than 2 cm wide. Cut them out and cut them into pieces, as shown in the photo.
We roll the pieces and glue them together, making one side larger than the other. We connect them together with glue. Secure with paper clips until completely dry.
We decorate the wire with yarn, gradually wrapping it. We wind the yarn on the previous layer to avoid unevenness.
We fix the lamp inside the lampshade. We select the most suitable place for such a decorative element.
How to make a chandelier with your own hands from thread tassels and hoops
CBC Life YouTube channel
What do you need
- Yarn;
- small photo frame;
- scissors;
- 3 sets of wooden hoops of different diameters;
- 3 identical short and 1 long metal chains;
- pliers;
- bulb;

10. Attach the pendant to the ceiling, screw in the light bulb and thread the lampshade through the bottom. A long chain can be hung, for example, on a hook mounted on the ceiling next to the base of the chandelier.
What other options are there?
There is another way to mount a chandelier. Place a metal ring on the lamp hanger and attach chains tied to the hoop to it. The detailed process is shown in the video below. By the way, the technology for making brushes in it is slightly different. And the author does not use a hoop, but metal hoops.
The tips of the brushes can be painted in a contrasting color:
Or make a gradient chandelier from colored threads, like here:
Knitted lampshade
A stylish knitted lampshade will definitely decorate your home. It doesn’t take much effort to create it, but the result will pleasantly surprise you.
You will need:
- knitted napkins;
- wallpaper glue;
- lamp socket;
- brush;
- air balloon;
- lamp.
Inflate the balloon to the required size and hang it. A great idea is to use a ladder for this.
Prepare the glue according to the instructions.
Using a brush, apply a layer of glue to a napkin and place it on the ball. Repeat the same with the remaining napkins.
When all the napkins have been used, leave the ball until completely dry. Cover the product with glue again and leave. We pierce the ball and remove it from the structure.
We install the cartridge and use it with pleasure!
Disposable spoons
This method is one of the most cost-effective, and the finished product looks no worse than a store-bought one. Chandeliers made from plastic spoons are well suited for kitchens and hallways.
What will you need?
- Construction knife.
- Cartridge.
- Glue on plastic.
- Empty five liter plastic bottle.
- Plastic spoons.
Step-by-step work:
- Rinse and dry the bottle, remove the label (if any), using a knife, cut the bottom evenly.
- Cut off the handles from the spoons, leaving two and a half centimeters at the base.
- One by one, stick the spoons onto the bottle, using the remaining part of the handle. The blanks are placed in scales, slightly overlapping each other.
- Pasting is done from the bottom up of the future chandelier.
- Next, the cartridge is installed in the neck of the bottle and securely fastened.
- Glue several spoons onto the neck so that it is not visible.
By placing the spoons in rows, following the example of fish scales, a denser coverage of the frame is ensured. The finished product can be painted with a can of paint on the outside.
Fringe lampshade
For work we will prepare:
- glue gun;
- two hoops of different sizes or hoops;
- fringed braid;
- fishing line;
- acrylic paint;
- scissors.
Paint the hoops with acrylic paint and leave until completely dry.
We cut three equal pieces of fishing line and tie them to a small hoop. We use the diagram shown in the figure.
Glue the fringed braid to the large circle. We do this especially carefully in places where the fishing line is tied.
We repeat the same on a small circle.
Simple and very quick to make, the lampshade is ready for use.
Reincarnation of an old chandelier
The easiest way to update your decor is to replace curtains and lighting fixtures. In the latter case, you can save a lot by reincarnating an old chandelier instead of buying a new one.
There are several restoration options:
- Leave the old lampshades and base, changing only the upholstery materials or color and adding new details to the design of the chandelier.
- Make a new frame structure that will be attached to the old base. The latter can be repainted or decorated with various elements.
Important! When working with old and antique chandeliers, they will require preliminary cleaning. In this case, only gentle products without aggressive chemical components in their composition are allowed to be used.
Lamp made of beads
Necessary materials:
- basket with metal frame;
- spray paint;
- garland;
- 3 hooks.
We remove the unnecessary parts of the basket, leaving only the metal frame. We paint it with silver spray paint. While the paint dries, prepare the garland. Attach one end to the frame.
We wrap the garland around the frame in any order.
We attach the hooks to the top edge of the basket and connect them to the lamp.
Lampshade frame for lamp
To update the lamp, you can use the old frame. A detailed inspection will help determine whether it is suitable for further use. Rusty places, chips, cracks, breakages. If they are minor, then it is worth repairing.
If everything is hopeless, then you need to buy an inexpensive lamp and take its frame. But you can make or take items that are on the farm for this purpose:
- plastic pot for indoor flowers;
- metal or plastic trash can;
- a piece of wire mesh of a certain size, the edges of which are connected;
- 5 liter plastic bottle;
- wooden bamboo sticks that can be joined with glue and wire;
- wire base of two circles connected to each other in several places.
In fact, if you think about it, there are many more ideas and ways to make a lampshade and a frame for it, you just have to think about it.
For safety reasons, it is better to take LED or energy-saving light bulbs for a homemade lamp. Then the lampshade surface will not heat up, deteriorate, or cause harm.
Rice paper lampshade
We will prepare the following materials:
- shade;
- thin wire;
- iron;
- rice paper or parchment;
- paper cutter;
- sewing machine.
We prepare the lampshade by removing unnecessary parts. If necessary, add wire in the middle.
Cut the paper into equal rectangles. We iron them and fold them like an accordion.
We cut many identical circles with a cutter.
We connect the circles together using a sewing machine.
We attach the resulting stripes with circles to the lampshade. We reduce the length with each circle.
Carefully secure the lamp with the lampshade and install it in the room.
Leaf fall
The lampshade, made in the form of various branches with leaves, looks very original. A chandelier made from scrap materials transmits light well, and its creation does not require any special skill or expense.
To work you will need:
- Plastic bottles, preferably green.
- Scissors.
- Lighter.
- Thin and thick wire.
- Frame from an old lamp.
Stages of work:
- You need to cut out leaves of different sizes from the middle part of the bottles.
- Smooth out sharp edges and nicks using a lighter.
- Then, from wire segments, build something like branches.
- On which to fasten the leaves. The plastic elements are attached by heating the plastic and pressing it tightly with a wire.
- All that remains is to place the branches on the frame at your discretion and hang the lampshade in its place.
- Leaves can be made from foil, thick fabric, colored cardboard.
The photo of homemade chandeliers shows how they differ from purchased ones in their uniqueness, beauty and diversity. Things made with your own hands will give warmth and joyful emotions.
What is it for?
Even something as simple as a lampshade can create a special atmosphere in a room.
A lampshade is a component of a lighting device (lamp, chandelier, sconce) designed to protect the eyes from bright electric light.
The lampshade for the lighting fixture is necessary for:
- adjusting the brightness level of lighting
- diffusion of light indoors
- changing warm and cold shades of lighting due to the color of the base
- creating a cozy, relaxed atmosphere in your home or apartment
- decoration, room decoration, creating a color accent
