What are floating beds and how to achieve this effect

Thanks to modern design solutions, bedroom furniture floating as if in air space gives the room a feeling of lightness and airiness. A weightless floating bed, as it is also called “levitating”, is a bed in which the supports are hidden, thanks to which such an effect is created. The support itself is much smaller than the bed, so you can only see it by looking under the bed. The design fits organically into various interior styles - modern, minimalism, country. A unique visual effect can be achieved using lighting, which will transform the interior beyond recognition.

What are the pros and cons of the models

Although outwardly quite unusual furniture, a bed with a “floating” effect has its own nuances. Only after studying the pros and cons, you can decide whether to choose such a sleeping place or not.

The advantages of such a model are as follows:

  • strength, durability - despite the external fragile effect, the bed can support at least two people;
  • unpleasant creaking and loosening of the frame, which is typical for many beds, are eliminated;
  • convenient cleaning of the space under the bed due to the absence of niches and legs;
  • the ability to choose the shape and width yourself, depending on the available space of the room;
  • a floating bed with lighting will attract the attention of both adults and children.

The products also have disadvantages:

  • the structure is attached to the wall, which prevents its further rearrangement. Each movement will be accompanied by the dismantling of at least the bed fasteners;
  • Furniture should be installed near sockets so that the wire length is minimal;
  • the design of the bed with the “floating” effect is large;
  • installation is complicated, so it will require the help of specialists or good skills;
  • ready-made floating bedroom furniture requires significant costs, and if made independently, you will need experience in working with wood and metal.

Disadvantages of a floating bed

Option for a floating bed without a backrest

Flying beds have undeniable advantages. There are several disadvantages that you need to consider when choosing a model to use.

  • The product is attached to the wall. It won't be easy to rearrange. It is recommended to install once.
  • Place near network connection devices, reducing the length of the wire, which guarantees safety of use.
  • The design of the bed has impressive dimensions; there are no additional storage areas. The piece of furniture will look attractive in spacious rooms. In small ones it is less worthy.
  • Installation of the product is complicated and time-consuming. You will have to use the help of specialists.

Design overview

Floating beds are gaining popularity, and modern manufacturers offer many options. This sleeping place is multifunctional and comes in several types:

  • with one hidden support in the middle - the bed is mounted to the wall. The legs are made of plastic, metal, sometimes not one, but several legs are used. They are hidden; you have to bend over to see them;
  • a floating bed with ropes that are attached to the ceiling makes it very easy to swing. This bed has a mattress with springs and a box frame, so it requires support;
  • floating bed on magnets. A significant disadvantage is the magnetic field. Therefore, this bed is not suitable for people with pacemakers.

Do-it-yourself beds are most often made with a wooden base, the dimensions of which are much smaller than the sleeping place, so it is hidden from view, but this does not affect the strength.

How to achieve a floating effect for furniture?

Naturally, furniture does not literally float in the air; there is always some kind of system of fastenings or supports. Although, there is one precedent in history when a designer managed to build a truly floating bed using two strong magnets. But this piece of furniture did not become a mass product, primarily due to its very high cost. In addition, powerful magnetic fields are not at all good for health.

So modern designers and architects who develop floating pieces of furniture and interior design resort to various clever tricks designed to make us see what is not there.

Floating furniture with wall mount

The most common version of floating furniture is with wall mounting. In this case, the furniture has no supports, and it is suspended above the floor at a certain height. This way the floating effect is achieved.

As a rule, not too large and heavy objects are attached in this way: various cabinets, console tabletops and shelves, small wall cabinets and racks. To mount more massive objects, special frames are often used, mounted into the wall during the renovation stage.

Floating furniture with hanging mount

You can achieve a floating effect by hanging pieces of furniture from the ceiling. Using thin and almost invisible cables or fishing lines, you can hang even large objects, such as a bed or a dining table. But often the pendants are not disguised in a special way, and are even decorated with beautiful chains or ropes with knots.

Armchairs, shelves, coffee tables, and even entire dining areas can be hanging. In the latter case, seats in the form of a swing are suspended on ropes or chains from the ceiling or a special frame. In this case, it is better to fix the dining table itself, otherwise such a design will be too inconvenient for eating.

Floating furniture on hidden supports

Another popular way to achieve the visual effect of floating is to hide the supports. For large structures, such as beds, they can be moved to the center, out of sight. Such supports can only be seen by bending down.

Sometimes the legs are made very thin, not conspicuous against the background of the massive upper part. This is how the floating effect is often achieved for sofas and other upholstered furniture.

In addition, the supports can be transparent - made of glass, acrylic or polycarbonate. Most often, small objects, such as coffee tables, are decorated in this way. But there are also beds installed on a transparent base.

Floating effect with lighting

The easiest and most cost-effective way to achieve the floating effect is to illuminate the bottom of horizontal surfaces. As a rule, a regular LED strip or flexible neon is used for these purposes.

In this way, you can make even ordinary furniture on legs or a plinth “float”. For example, a bed or a kitchen set. When the backlight is on and in the twilight, a complete visual effect of raising the object above the floor is created.

Combined methods for creating floating furniture

Quite often the listed methods are used in combination. This enhances the soaring effect. In addition, some large and heavy pieces of furniture are simply dangerous to fasten in only one way. For greater reliability and stability, use two or more options at once. For example, such a large product as a bed is often attached to the wall and additionally installed on a hidden support or several supports.

Especially often, backlighting is used in combined options. For example, an LED strip is attached to the bottom of wall-mounted cabinets, or to the same beds. Thus, the effect is cumulative. Such furnishings make a really strong impression.

Materials for creation

The quality of the bed is determined by the wood that is used in its manufacture:

  • pine – good at work, easy to process. It is used for arranging elements such as frames, legs, and flooring for a mattress;
  • spruce is the least durable and sometimes cracks. Used for elements that do not require heavy loads;
  • oak is a durable material, suitable for creating decorative elements;
  • beech – after processing it is the most flexible in work. Used in decorative elements;
  • Larch is a strong and durable material, almost not susceptible to rotting. Supports and frames of bedroom furniture are made from it;
  • mahogany is the most expensive and is used for decorative purposes.

To save budget, chipboard can be used for external parts of the bed. When making the frame of a floating place, wood can be replaced with strong, lightweight, steel pipes with a square cross-section. Since bedroom furniture is subject to heavy loads, preference should be given to pipes with thicker metal.

Popular types of floating furniture for various rooms

Floating furniture is used in any room of the house, as well as in offices and public institutions. In addition to visual lightness and the effect of expanding space, such items make cleaning easier. In addition, such furniture looks very stylish and modern.

Floating nightstand for living room

Side tables or chests of drawers in the living room are most often used as a TV stand. Suspended structures attached to the wall are one of the most popular types of such products.

Such cabinets have replaced outdated walls and bulky sets and are now used everywhere. The main advantage of such designs is that the floating cabinet can be made very long, almost across the entire width of the wall of the room, and it still will not look bulky.

floating bed

Until recently, the floating effect for beds was most often achieved with the help of lighting. But in recent years, products with hidden legs have become very popular. Of course, such a bulky and massive object as a bed looks very impressive in a “floating” form. If you limit yourself to one massive support in the center of the structure and fastening it to the wall, you achieve the complete impression of the product being suspended in the air. From the outside, such a bed looks like a cantilever structure without supports. The effect is amazing.

There is another compelling argument that fans of floating furnishings like to appeal to. In addition to aesthetic appeal, such furniture is also less dangerous. After all, we are all familiar with the situation when we hit our toes on the base of our beds. For the bedroom, where we often walk barefoot, this advantage of floating furniture is very important.

In addition to beds, the bedroom can be equipped with hanging bedside tables or wall-mounted console tables. They will look quite harmonious when combined with both a floating bed and the most ordinary one.

But good old lighting for beds and other bedroom furniture is still popular. This method of creating a floating effect is accessible to everyone, both in terms of cost and ease of installation.

Floating bathroom furniture

For the bathroom, they often choose not only wall-mounted furniture, but also plumbing items. In this case, even at the repair stage, a special frame is installed - an installation that allows you to securely fasten all products and also serves to mask communications. Wall-mounted units can include sink cabinets, cabinets, pencil cases, countertops and consoles.

In addition to the purely aesthetic effect, such products also have a very practical function. Raising furniture above floor level avoids its contact with water. After all, in the bathroom, no matter how hard you try, you will not be able to avoid small puddles on the floor. Floating bathroom furniture in this case is more durable, especially if it is made of non-moisture resistant materials.

Floating kitchen furniture

Until recently, the technique of floating interior items was rarely used in the kitchen. However, recently the fashion for such furniture has reached this room.

Nowadays you can find completely floating kitchen sets. That is, the entire lower row of kitchen cabinets can be attached to the wall, just like the top one. This method of fastening for kitchen furniture is as practical as for the bathroom. After all, in the kitchen it is also possible for furniture supports to come into contact with water, especially during utility accidents.

In addition to wall-mounted cabinets, in modern kitchens you can find floating bar counters, console kitchen countertops, and even entire floating kitchen islands and peninsulas.

Floating table tops for office furniture

It is worth mentioning another option for floating furniture, or rather its details. Very often, in the descriptions of some series of office furniture, both executive and ordinary operational, floating tabletops are mentioned. In this case, we are not talking about the full-fledged soaring effect, but rather about its imitation.

In these series, the tabletops are not installed directly on the table frames, but are attached to them using so-called spacers. That is, special metal or plastic intermediate inserts. In this case, a gap is formed between the frame and the tabletop, which creates the effect of a floating tabletop.

How the floating effect is created

A bed with a flying effect is intriguing, creates a special mood in the bedroom, it will fit into any interior, giving the room a modern, sophisticated look. At the same time, such a model can be made with your own hands. If you have to work with wood, you will need the following tool:

  • jigsaw with a set of blades for woodworking;
  • screwdriver with a set of bits;
  • screwdriver;
  • rubber mallet;
  • emery cloth;
  • paint brush;
  • glue, varnish, paint;
  • tape measure, square, marker, level;
  • awl, hand saw.

Also, corners and screws are used for the frame.

To work with a metal frame you will need:

  • saw – grinder with a set of blades;
  • drill, drills, welding machine;
  • clamps, clips;
  • ruler, angle, level;
  • pencil.

The support located in the center of the bed has 6 supports and is connected to hinges. The supports are pulled together with a cable, creating tension with turnbuckles. This action allows you to control the horizontal position of the bed when the floor surface is not very flat. However, if the surface is level, it is enough to secure the supports with bolts.

Bed parts can be made from eight dry boards. It is enough to have drawings and cut the boards according to them. Next, the supports are cut out, and all irregularities are removed using a grinding machine. To prevent the bed from squeaking, glue and furniture dowel are usually used. After all the parts are ready, they are coated with varnish or paint.

Sections of stainless steel pipes with a diameter of 34 mm can be used as hinges for the supports. Once this is complete, the bed pieces are assembled into one piece. Having established the level, you need to clearly adjust the furniture for the correct horizontal position. This is quite difficult and will require concentration. The level is also checked in relation to the supports. After adjusting the support, you can begin installing the bed frame, backrest and slats.

The uniqueness of the bed also lies in the light effect, which can be enhanced through the automatic process of switching on and off, for which it is necessary to improve the LEDs with a day-night sensor. With this solution, you can ensure that the backlight is turned on only at night. The strain gauge sensor is no less attractive. By installing it, the backlight will turn off as soon as a person appears on the bed, and will turn on during absence. For the head of the bed you will need filler and upholstery. For filling, foam rubber and its substitutes are usually used, and for upholstery, fabric, leather, suede, and their analogues are suitable.

The design of a flying bed can be with or without a niche. At the intended location of the box, a rectangular hole is cut out, using hinges, a lid is installed. After that, a board is made so that the mattress is fixed. A board is attached to the base so that the edge is 20 - 30 millimeters higher than the plywood. At this stage of assembly, the wooden parts are coated with varnish and, if desired, paint. When completely dry, the two parts of the bed can be joined together. If there is no need for a linen box, then assembling the bed is greatly simplified. In this case, the sleeping place is made according to a simpler principle, with support in the form of legs.

For convenient access to the niche, you can use a system with a lifting mechanism. It is quite difficult to do such work on your own; it is easier to purchase a ready-made bed with a lift. The mechanism should be used with minimal shock absorbers, which will serve as support for the berth at the top point. This convenient approach allows you to free your hands and does not require outside help.

If desired, the floating bed can be equipped with LED lighting - single-color or flashing. First of all, a metal frame is attached to which the LED strip is glued. This step-by-step action allows the tape to hold tighter, and the metal acts as a heat dissipator. It is more practical to use a full-color RGB tape and attach it from top to bottom. The result is bedroom furniture floating in the air, held above the floor by rays of rich color.

When making a bed yourself, you can make your work easier and hand over part of the work to a workshop. Specialists who work with metal profiles and wood coverings will manufacture a support or frame according to the drawings provided to them.

Advantages and disadvantages

To summarize, it’s worth looking at the floating bed project from different angles.

It is a mistake to think that it is suitable only for a loft style. In fact, these designs can dilute and transform any interior, including classics. Take a look at what Ormatek has to offer or check out the Dylan bed. The latter, by the way, is produced by the Italian company Cattelan Italia.

But still, let's take an objective look at the strengths and weaknesses.

Oddly enough, let's start with the shortcomings. These include:

  • the bed must be mounted to the wall, and therefore it cannot be quickly rearranged;
  • should be installed near sockets so as not to pull long wires;
  • the project provides for fairly large dimensions;
  • the installation scheme is complex, it is better to invite specialists;
  • not so easy to make with your own hands.

If you do not agree with these disadvantages, leave reviews and write your counterarguments.

And there are no less strengths here. They are:

  • strength, despite external fragility;
  • durability;
  • absence of unpleasant squeaks;
  • the frame will not loosen over time;
  • you can choose any shape and size;
  • options with a lifting mechanism are available;
  • There are designs with lighting that create an additional effect;
  • original appearance;
  • most models have an orthopedic base, etc.

It is originality and uniqueness that makes such options so attractive in the eyes of those who want furniture that is not like everyone else.
