Review of popular models of transforming beds, design nuances

At the end of the 19th century, the first transformable bed appeared, which was invented by the American doctor William Murphy. A transformable bed is designed to free up square meters during the day and provide comfortable places to sleep at night. Today, a bedroom with a transformable bed is often found in small apartments. The product can hide not only a sleeping place, but also other furniture items ─ a table, a cabinet, shelves, and folding doors can serve to zone the room.

The main types of transformable beds

There are different types of bed designs that can be transformed into a wardrobe, desk, sofa and even a chest of drawers. In addition, children's transformable beds from a single design can easily be converted into two sleeping places. Next, we will consider some types of structures and ways to transform them for the daytime period.

IllustrationBrief description of models
Beds that simply lean away from the wall. This is the simplest and most affordable option for self-production, which has its advantages and disadvantages. The positive aspects of such models include the ease of folding and unfolding, which even a child can do. When folded, the structure protrudes from the wall no more than 100 mm. The disadvantages are that you cannot fold the bed together with a thick mattress, so it will have to be stored separately. In addition, it is convenient to fold only a single bed in this way. It is clear that a reliable system for fixing the bed on the wall when folded must be provided, so that in the heat of children’s games the structure does not open spontaneously due to some point or shock.
Folding bed that lifts into the closet. It will be the best option for a children's room if the room has a very small area. The berth is folded along its long side. Only children's or single beds can be folded using this principle. Gas elevators are used as lifting mechanisms in this model.
Folding double beds-transformers are stored in a vertically installed wardrobe for the daytime. Various lifting mechanisms can be used in the design. The advantage of vertically folding models is that the system can be used for beds of any width.
Folding bed combined with a sofa. The convenience of such models is that two rather bulky pieces of furniture occupy one area and are used alternately, each at its own time. During the daytime, residents of the room have the opportunity to comfortably spend time near the TV or devote time to their favorite activities. This design can also use different lifting mechanisms.
A bed that transforms into a desk. In this model, the frame together with the mattress is lifted and installed behind the tabletop. This design is used only for single or children's beds. This option is perfect for a narrow room.
A chest of drawers is convenient both for a small apartment and as an additional sleeping place, used when relatives arrive or guests stay overnight. In this model, an “accordion” system is used to fold it, consisting of numerous sections that serve as support for the berth. The advantage of this design is its compact size. When folded, it occupies a floor area measuring approximately 900x600 mm. And this despite the fact that the model has upper drawers in which you can store a mattress and bedding. That is, an almost full-fledged chest of drawers.
Transformable bed for a small children's room. The model is designed for two beds. Thanks to the retractable system, the design takes up half the space in the room than two separate beds. The second bed can only be pulled out at night.
A transformable bed that is suitable for a one-room apartment in which a family with two children lives, or for a children’s room for a large family. Sometimes, such a design can be the only rational solution to the problem of sleeping places for the whole family.
The model that rises to the ceiling is suitable for both a one-room apartment and a small bedroom where it is impossible to install a double bed. In this case, a design is presented that uses a wall-mounted rail lifting mechanism.
A chair-bed has been familiar to many since early childhood. It was also often used to save space, but it was, let’s say, not very comfortable for a night’s rest. Today, this piece of furniture has been modified, making it more convenient to unfold and fold. This version of the transformer can be used as a sleeping place for a child, as well as in case of guests arriving.

What you should pay special attention to when choosing a transforming bed

General room requirements

Before choosing a nursery design for children of different sexes, you need to remember that teenagers and toddlers need more sunlight.

The video will tell you about the main rules for planning a children's room.

Warning ATTENTION! It is better to choose a room with windows facing south, southwest or southeast. The layout will depend on the location of the door

If it is located opposite the windows, then the bed and cabinets can be placed along the side walls

Nursery layout for children of different sexes

Every nursery should have a basic set of furniture:

  1. Bed.
  2. Closet.
  3. Desk.
  4. Chair.
  5. Nightstand.

Sometimes they add toy boxes, a horizontal bar, and bookshelves. Furniture has to be doubled, especially if a boy and a girl live in it. It is sometimes very difficult to place large items, so you can use more functional furniture - a wardrobe, a bunk bed.

The horizontal bar fits perfectly into a child's room

Convenient solution for shelves and racks in the room

General requirements for furniture:

  1. Furniture in size should be selected based on the physical parameters of the child and his age category.
  2. Give preference to soft upholstery. Do not use protruding elements or metal headboards.
  3. Children should have the opportunity to designate their personal territory.

Star Half Full ATTENTION! If a bunk bed or shelves are installed, then you need to leave space so that when the child is sitting there is at least ten centimeters above his head. All shades in the room should be combined with each other

Also, the color scheme depends on zoning, since each child should use the colors that he loves. You can stick to a neutral style

Neutral design style

In the design of a nursery, white, beige, and sand colors are suitable for boys and girls. These tones reflect light perfectly, making the room appear sunnier. It is better to add cheerful colors: yellow, orange, blue, pale green. It will also be useful to familiarize yourself with the design of a children's room for a girl. It is recommended not to use:

  1. Red.
  2. Hot pink.
  3. Acid.
  4. Dark blue.

These colors depress the nervous system of children and it is better to avoid them.

Design of small apartments from 31 to 35 square meters. m.

Studio project 35 sq. m.

The best small apartments are decorated using natural materials - this brings the required solidity to their furnishings, and allows you to do without decorative elements cluttering up the space, since the color and texture of the materials themselves are used as decor.

Parquet boards laid in a herringbone pattern, porcelain tiles with a “marble” surface, veneered MDF – these are the main finishing materials in the apartment. In addition, white and black paint were used. Wooden interior elements in combination with marble surfaces make it possible to saturate it with an interesting pattern, while keeping the main volume free.

The living room is combined with the kitchen and dining room, and the sleeping area is separated by a partition made of metal and glass. During the day, you can fold it and lean it against the wall, so it won’t take up much space. The entrance area and bathroom are isolated from the main volume of the apartment. In addition, there is a laundry room.

Apartment with a separate bedroom of 35 sq. m.

Beautiful interiors of small apartments, as a rule, have a common feature: they take the minimalist style as a basis, and add an interesting decorative idea to it. The stripe became such an idea in the 35-meter one-room apartment.

A small place for night rest is highlighted by a wall with horizontal lines applied to it. They make a tiny bedroom seem larger and add rhythm. The wall in which the storage system is hidden is also “striped.” Track lamps in the interior support the idea of horizontal stripes, repeated both in furniture and in the decoration of the bathroom.

The main color of the interior is white, with black used as a contrast. Textile elements and panels in the living room add subtle color accents and soften the atmosphere.

Interior of a small apartment in loft style 33 sq. m.

This is a real masculine interior with a strong character that reflects the views of its owner. The studio layout makes it possible to maintain the maximum possible volume, while highlighting the necessary areas for work and relaxation.

The living room and kitchen are separated by a brick bar counter, typical of a loft-style interior. Between the living room and home office we placed a chest of drawers with an adjoining desk.

The interior is full of rich decorative details, many of which are made by hand. In their production, old, already discarded things were used. So, the coffee table is a former suitcase, the seats of bar stools were once bicycle seats, the leg of a floor lamp is a photo tripod.

Small two-room apartment 35 sq. m. with a compact bedroom

The main color of the interior of a two-room apartment is white, which is ideal for small spaces.

By demolishing the wall in the entrance area, the area of the kitchen-living room was increased. In the living area there was a straight sofa without armrests, and in the kitchen there was a small sofa by the window with storage drawers.

The designers chose minimalism to decorate the apartment; this is the most suitable style for small spaces; it makes it possible to use a minimum of furniture and decor.

A transformable bed was installed in the compact bedroom; it can be unfolded with one hand: at night it is a comfortable double bed, and during the daytime it is a narrow wardrobe. A workstation with an armchair and shelves was placed near the window.

The design of the apartment in a modern style is designed for a young married couple. In a small area we managed to find space for a kitchen-living room and a cozy bedroom. When remodeling a small two-room apartment, the bathroom was enlarged, and a compact dressing room was placed in the hallway. In the place where there used to be a kitchen, a bedroom was placed.

The apartment is decorated in light colors with the addition of bright details - an ideal solution for small spaces, allowing you to visually expand their volume.

In the bedroom, the colored elements are a turquoise bedside table, pillows on the bed and partial trim of the curtains in light green; in the kitchen-living room - a turquoise chair of a modern shape, pillows on the sofa, shelf mounts and a photo frame; in the bathroom - the upper part of the walls.

Which mechanism is more reliable?

The main element of any transformable bed is the lifting mechanism, the reliability of which ensures the durability of the product. Today there are several types of such mechanisms:

  • spring;
  • gas lift;
  • with counterweight.

Spring

As for the mechanism with a counterweight, it is considered the most reliable. Its only drawback is that its installation requires additional space in the furniture body. This is the only reason why such a mechanism is used very rarely.

Rules for choosing transformable beds for children

The design of transforming beds is safe for children. Designers are improving the furniture frame, ensuring convenient use. For installation in a children's room, you should use solid wood products, where the hidden elements of the transformation mechanism are made of metal.

Rules for choosing transformable children's beds:

  • The sleeping place must meet age requirements. Bed dimensions are selected taking into account weight, height and build. For preschool children, it is enough to purchase a bed up to 60 cm wide, while schoolchildren need a full single bed 60-80 cm wide, and teenagers will need a single bed (over 90 cm wide). To calculate the optimal length of children's furniture, it is enough to add 20-30 cm to the child's height. The result will be approximately 180-200 cm.
  • Mattress bases for children's furniture should be purchased exclusively of the orthopedic type. Solid fabric is not recommended even for adults, not to mention children. The orthopedic frame consists of small planks (lamellas), which bend slightly under the weight of the sleeper, providing optimal anatomical properties and support for the spine.
  • Special orthopedic mattresses of increased rigidity are made for children. Coconut coir or natural latex is used as a filler. For teenagers, a block with independent springs should be used, especially if the child has problems with the spine.
  • The safety of the furniture is ensured by installed sides 20-60 cm wide, the use of which is required when installing a two-tier structure.

Decoration options should be selected taking into account the characteristics of the interior of the room. The facades of cabinet furniture elements are often tamed with MDF boards, laminated chipboards and veneer.

Modern transformable furniture can be adjusted to the individual needs of the child. The versatility of such products significantly saves the family budget, increasing the comfort of the children's room.

Dimensions

The dimensional grid of transforming models differs little from the standard ones and fully complies with GOST requirements. The transformer can be designed for children aged 0 to 10 years and has its own dimensions.

AgeWidthLengthBed height from floor
Kids from 0 to 3 years60 cm120 cmLower position – 30 cm, upper position – 50 cm
Preschoolers from 4 to 7 years old60 cm140 cm30 cm
Schoolchildren from 8 to 12 years old80 cm160 cm50 cm
Teenagers from 12-13 years old90 cm180 cm50 cm

The model range for adults can be divided into three types: single, one-and-a-half and double. Single beds produced by domestic manufacturers can vary in width from 70 to 90 cm. While imported brands offer more spacious options for one bed, the width of which is 90-100 cm. The length of the bed is 1.9-2 meters . This option is perfect for teenagers and adults with low weight.

Transformable one-and-a-half beds have a larger area and provide freedom of sleep for one person, but for two there will be not enough space. The standard width is up to 1.4 meters, and the length is 1.9-2 m. A truly royal option for the bedroom would be a double bed, the dimensions of which are 1.4x2 meters and 1.6x2 m. But among modern models you can also find specimens with width which will be 170 cm, which is not very practical for transformers, because do not forget about the load on the wall.

What types of transformable beds are there?

There are different types of transformable beds - it can be a standard sofa built into a closet, or a pull-out mattress for a child. In order to understand these types and determine the optimal one for yourself, you should consider them in more detail.

Table No. 1. The most popular types of transformable beds.

View, illustrationDescription
Sofa wardrobeThis is a fairly universal product, because it includes not only a sleeping place, but also a sofa and a wardrobe, so this design is best suited for the living room. By installing such a three-in-one piece of furniture, you can save a significant area of the room. The main features of this model: · The design consists of a sleeping place, wardrobes along the edges and a sofa. At the same time, when we unfold the bed, the sofa folds down. · The bed has an impressive size, so it is easily suitable for two people.
SingleThis option is already suitable for one person (more often it is installed in a nursery), or a similar bed can be installed in a guest room. The main features of a product of this type: · Above the sleeping area there is a closet where you can put any personal items. The advantage is that it will always be accessible, no matter what position the bed is in. · Even when unfolded, the structure will not take up too much free space, so you don’t have to clean the sleeping area every day.
With pull-out mattressRetractable models of transforming beds are distinguished by the following characteristics: · The design assumes the presence of a special retractable mechanism. · The bed slides easily into the closet and becomes invisible from the outside. · On top there are a large number of different shelves, compartments and niches for storing something. · Usually the bed has impressive dimensions, so two people can comfortably fit on it.
Table-bedThis is the most suitable option if we are talking about a room for one person. The design is characterized by the following features: · A surface is attached to the other side of the base of the single bed, which can optionally be used as a convenient table. · If desired, you can easily change the position of the table - make it transverse or longitudinal. The main disadvantage is that it will be difficult for two people to sit on such a structure.
Transformer in 2 tiersThis bed is designed for two people, so it is often installed in a children's room where two children live. In another way, such a structure is usually called “invisible”, because when assembled it becomes completely invisible to people around. It looks as if it is a flat wall. The main advantages of the design include the following: · Functionality. · The presence of a large number of cabinets and shelves around. · You can easily accommodate older children on the upper and lower tier. · This model can be quickly transformed into a comfortable sofa - to do this, you just need to remove the second tier and cover the lower one with soft pillows.

Design and packaging solution

A round crib is a pair of semicircular slats with slats, which can be either metal or wood. The product from which material to choose depends on the preferences of the parents: each option has its own advantages. Wood is environmentally friendly and gives off a feeling of warmth.

Metal structures are easy to assemble, resistant to loosening and retain their impeccable appearance for a long time. The bottom is usually made of plywood sheet. Metal models are equipped with a wide strip with holes located throughout its entire surface.

The kit additionally includes a pair of rectangular strips with slats and a plate for the bottom. They are used to convert a round cradle into an oval one.

All motion sickness mechanisms are divided into rocking chairs and pendulums. The rocking chair is suitable for children up to 6 months; after that, there is a danger that when rocking, the baby may fall out of it. A crib with a pendulum is a safer option. There can be two ways to swing it: “right - left” or “forward - back”. The most preferable and convenient for the baby is the first option.

In addition to the necessary structural parts of the cradle, it is necessary to ensure that it is properly equipped. A round crib set must include a mattress, bumper, and blanket.

It is better to choose a mattress of medium hardness for a baby. The optimal filler would be coconut fiber. A mattress with asymmetrical thickness is allowed. This design ensures that the baby's head will lie on a slight elevation. This will prevent the newborn from choking when burping.

There are many different types of bumpers for a round crib. Some of them consist of a solid fabric with filling, on the sides of which there are ribbons for attaching to the cradle. Others are individual pads on ribbons. An interesting idea of the designers is the sides made of many soft toys.

The question “does a baby need a pillow” causes a lot of controversy. Many are convinced that it is unnecessary and harmful. And some believe that a thin, wide pillow is necessary to prevent the baby’s head from rolling down.

You should definitely purchase a diaper made of waterproof fabric with an elastic band - this is a guarantee that it will remain in its place at the right time.

A blanket for a baby must be made of non-allergenic materials. Wool or flannel are perfect. Due to the fact that the heat exchange processes of a newborn have not yet been established, you should not wrap your baby in blankets made of heavy, dense fabric.

3 in 1 transformer device (wardrobe-sofa-bed)

The construction of a wardrobe that transforms into a sofa bed may seem complicated only at first glance, however, many craftsmen assemble with their own hands structures that are not inferior to factory models. Let's take a closer look at how this type of furniture works.

Transformable furniture: wardrobe-sofa-bed

General device

This type of furniture such as a wardrobe-sofa-bed is a structure consisting of the following main elements:

  • cabinet with shelves and various storage systems;
  • facades;
  • sofa;
  • bed (with or without mattress);
  • headboard;
  • lift-and-fold transformation mechanisms;
  • retractable bed legs.

Transformable cabinet facades

The facades of the transforming cabinet are one of the main design elements, since the appearance of the product and how it fits into the interior of the room largely depend on them. Doors can be made of the same materials as the main structure - wood, chipboard or MDF. However, manufacturers also offer mirror, plastic and combined facades, which can be hinged, folding and sliding (compartment).

Cabinet front panels made of laminated chipboard are a budget option that is also suitable for connoisseurs of minimalism. Next come MDF doors, which, thanks to a wide range of colors and textures, are suitable for almost any interior style. The most interesting solutions are facades made of glass, mirrors, plastic or combinations.

Wardrobe-bed: transformation mechanisms

The 3-in-1 transforming cabinet is equipped with quite complex transformation mechanisms that allow you to transform a seemingly ordinary storage system into full-fledged spaces. The operating principle of the transformer depends on the use of a certain type of spring.

The transformation mechanism is selected depending on the type of tilting

Coil springs

This type of spring is made from fairly strong steel-carbon wire. They are able to withstand very heavy loads and have a long service life, designed for an average of 50,000 operating cycles (lifting and lowering).

Transformation mechanism with coil springs

Gas mechanisms

Gas transformation mechanisms or gas lifts are a piston device that contains gas under pressure. When moving the bed from one position to another, gas lifts ensure a smooth transformation. They have high wear resistance and do not creak.

Gas lifts

It is difficult to say with 100% certainty which type of transformation mechanism is better, it all depends on personal preference. However, two points should be noted that may influence the choice:

  1. The depth of the niche for a coil spring bed is 250 mm.
  2. The gas transformation mechanism hides the sleeping place in a niche to a depth of about 450 mm, but at the same time it remains visible at the head of the bed.

Transformable bed design

The bed built into the closet consists of the following main elements:

  • frame made of natural wood, chipboard or metal;
  • narrow or wide lamellas made of laminated wood with a width of 30-70 mm;
  • orthopedic mattress;
  • transformation mechanism;
  • retractable supports made in the form of a support board or brackets;
  • decorative false panel used to disguise the bed when folded.

Folding bed device

Sofa arrangement

The sofa included in the design of the transforming cabinet consists of the following elements:

  • frame made of wood, chipboard or metal;
  • bases for spring blocks;
  • filler;
  • upholstery;
  • transformation mechanism;
  • linen compartment.

Automation methods

Life is so short that you want to provide yourself and your loved ones with maximum comfort at home. For this purpose, ways to automate transformer beds were invented. Their main feature is as follows:

  • Ensuring ease of use;
  • Possibility of automatic rocking of the baby;
  • The ability to independently transform without the use of physical effort;
  • Operation is carried out using a remote control;
  • Significant savings in time and effort;
  • No noise, which is important if there are neighbors below.

There are several types of automation, some of which you can actually install yourself. Convenient for new parents, the crib model with the function of rocking the baby is well suited for quickly falling asleep. This type of furniture has a built-in pendulum that allows you to swing the bed with gentle amplitudes.

An automatic transformer-type bed can in a matter of minutes turn into a cozy false closet that skillfully disguises a sleeping area. You can also independently integrate a motor into the mechanism of the baby’s sofa bed, which will provide the child with quick unfolding of the furniture. By pressing the appropriate button on the product, you can get a ready-made place to sleep in less than a minute.

Features of elements

A transformable wardrobe bed is a complex structure consisting of many elements. The main factor influencing the reliability and ease of use of the product is the transformation mechanism. Also, such furniture differs in materials, design of facades, sizes and other features of the sleeping bed.

Facades

When the bed is put away in the closet, the façade remains visible. It can be made from various materials, so you can choose furniture that is not only multifunctional, but also suitable for any interior:

  1. Laminated chipboard is an inexpensive, easy-to-maintain, durable material. The surface of the wardrobe-bed is perfectly smooth, it can be matte or glossy, in a wide variety of colors and textures.
  2. MDF is a more durable and environmentally friendly material than chipboard. The fronts of the wardrobe beds are coated with acrylic paints, polished or varnished. You can achieve a variety of effects - mother of pearl, starry sky and so on.
  3. Plastic is inexpensive and practical. It is easy to care for and does not break during use. Therefore, a wardrobe-table-bed with such fronts would be a good choice for a children's room.
  4. Natural wood, although expensive, has significant advantages: environmental friendliness, durability, luxurious appearance.
  5. Glass - allows you to visually expand the space. Colored film and sand patterns can be used for decoration.
  6. A mirror also creates the illusion of a spacious room. A protective film is applied to the surface, so even if the front of the wardrobe-bed is damaged, the fragments will not fly apart and hurt anyone.
  7. Leather is not a cheap material, but it is natural, suitable for creating an elite interior.

Mechanisms of transformation

The lifting wardrobe bed can be transformed using a gas or spring mechanism, each with its own strengths and weaknesses:

  1. Gas design. The smooth lowering and raising of furniture is ensured by gas lifts - pistons filled with gas under pressure. These models are easier to fold without making noise, but are more likely to break.
  2. Spring type mechanism for a wardrobe bed. There is a spring inside that sets the structure in motion. This device is stronger, more reliable, but more expensive. The main disadvantage is that squeaking may occur over time.

Often, buyers are worried that the transformable product may suddenly collapse or collapse, which is dangerous to health and life. However, such worries are groundless. The fittings for wardrobe beds with a lifting mechanism include a protective corner to prevent them from tipping over. If the structure is too heavy, you can play it safe and fix it in a vertical position with latches or magnets.

Sleeping bed

The most important thing in a bed that goes into a closet is the sleeping place, so you need to choose it especially carefully. Its main elements:

  • frame;
  • base;
  • mattress;
  • retractable supports;
  • false doors with handles.

The frame of the wardrobe-bed consists of side walls and additional functional elements - mezzanines, shelves, cabinets that are attached to the wall. It is better for it to be metal or wood, this guarantees high strength. Models made from synthetic materials are cheaper, but less reliable and durable.

The base of the transformable wardrobe bed is attached to the frame, serving as a support for the mattress. It comes in two types:

  1. From lamellas. It is a lattice made of wooden, metal or plastic slats. This transforming design is durable and promotes good ventilation of the mattress.
  2. Solid. This is a flat base made of wood, chipboard or plastic. It is designed for high loads, but does not provide proper air circulation.

Usually a folding bed-wardrobe is sold with a mattress included. It can be foam rubber or spring. In this case, it is necessary to ensure that the product fits perfectly in size to the sleeping bed.

Manufacturing materials

In addition to the type of folding mechanism of the bed, its external qualities, the buyer should be interested in the type of material from which it is made. The most affordable structures will be made from chipboard and MDF boards. But it must be remembered that the glue that is used in the production of furniture products from them can provoke allergic reactions.

Eco-friendly wooden options made from solid beech, pine, oak, and other species, although more expensive, are distinguished by their high strength and ability to last a long time.

The undisputed leaders on the market are bed-lockers, tables, portable banquettes and chairs in which the frame is made of iron. The products do not require additional care, are not afraid of pests, and are more reliable and safe compared to models made from other materials. The only negative is their heavy weight.

Another popular material is plastic. It is not afraid of moisture and resists mechanical wear well.

The combined frame is more aesthetically pleasing and durable, but requires improved mechanics that will easily support the serious weight of wood and metal.
