DIY curtains and drapes for sloping windows

Happy owners of country houses often encounter the peculiarities of such buildings completely unexpectedly for themselves. This is especially true for the design and furnishings of a new home after renovation or immediately after purchase, if caring for a country house is new to the owners. One of the most significant differences between the house is the presence of an attic - essentially an attic equipped for living quarters.

Attics are very popular. They are usually lighter due to the fact that more windows can be placed on sloping walls or simply expand their area. The double-sided attic can be completely furnished with windows and you can enjoy your unusual home as much as you like. Curtains also help change the level of light in a room where there is a sloping skylight. If you choose them wisely (or even choose blinds), you can adjust the brightness level of light in the room at any time of the day and in any weather conditions.

Who said that curtains for triangular windows are difficult?

Frame structures of non-standard shape are found in country houses or cottages. You can find an unusual window in modern new buildings. The choice of design solutions for curtains has a number of features, as do the methods of hanging curtains.

Design of a non-standard window

  2. To prevent the curtains from moving: step-by-step instructions on how to secure the curtain rod
  3. Alternative - pleated
  4. Curtains with eyelets

Classic curtains and tulle

What is the difficulty of decorating windows using traditional tulle and curtains? Firstly, on bevels it is more difficult to lay the fabric in beautiful folds. Secondly, ordinary curtain rods do not fit them - in the inclined part the curtain will slide down.

Therefore, the best option is a curtain rod with Velcro. First, folds are laid on the curtains and only then Velcro is sewn on, so the drapery always remains even. The only negative: you cannot move or open such curtains. They can only be lifted using grabbers.

Often the problem when decorating slanting windows is the hanging of curtains. We are often called separately to provide this service - having disassembled a complex structure for washing, people then cannot put everything back together as neatly and beautifully as it was. With Velcro curtain rods this problem does not arise.

The second option is a round or profile cornice with clamps that hold the rings motionless on the beveled part. You need to remember that if you use such a curtain rod, it will be impossible to move the inclined part of the curtains. Like here.

Another option is to attach tulle and curtains to decorative holders.

These can be wall sockets, hooks, drapery spirals, attached along the textile hanging line. Curtains are sewn onto mounting tape, pulled together, and then hung on holders. But this is also a fixed option.

Original solutions

There are unusual ways to decorate such non-standard windows:

  • The center of the opening remains without cornices, and on the side, beveled sides, light curtain fabrics are attached to them using hooks or rings, collected on curtain tape and secured crosswise. To prevent the curtains from sliding down, the upper fastenings are needed with locking mechanisms. You can even complement this design with lambrequins. In this case, the thickness and strength of the cornices must be selected based on the weight of the textile.
  • Several short straight curtain rods are placed at different levels above the window opening, the curtains hang straight (or intercepted in the middle). No additional fixation is required here. It is only necessary that there is space above the window bevels for attaching the cornices.
  • A simple-shaped canvas is attached in the center, and in the corners of the side bevels it is fixed with tiebacks.
  • Along the contour of the window, decorative hooks are screwed in at equal distances, onto which a textile fabric without cornices is attached.
  • An ordinary straight cornice is attached at the level of the beginning of the bevels, leaving the upper part undecorated.

The nuances of curtaining

In order to hang curtains on a sloping ceiling with your own hands, you will need to purchase special curtains. Next, a choice is made in favor of a fabric that will drape well. And also decide on the color and size of the fabric. To hang curtains with sloping windows in a log house, the owners of such dwellings may have certain difficulties. How curtains are selected for arched and triangular windows is shown in the photo.

Color spectrum

With the right color, the room takes on a truly exceptional look and you simply won’t want to leave such a room.

Beige

Conservative color. Curtains in such a noble, elegant and soothing beige color scheme create a calming and relaxing environment in the room.

Burgundy

A choice for a person with delicate taste. Burgundy curtains will bring special warmth to the room and evoke a feeling of stability and prosperity.

Pink

Gives the room a feeling of freshness, lightness, romance and adds optimism.

Blue

Deep color. Its association with coolness allows the use of blue curtains to decorate windows located on the south side.

The photo shows a children's room and a dormer window with blue curtains.

Blue

Frosty and pure like snow. Canvases of this color visually increase the space of the room and the height of the walls.

Grey

An impartial and aloof color that is not conspicuous, but which can be elegant and reveal itself through a variety of complex shades.

Window opening in different rooms

Kitchens are rarely equipped in attics, but you still need to know about the design of windows in them. In such a room, only natural fabrics coated with fireproof coating are suitable. Good news: homeowners can experiment and show off all their imagination. You can hang both lambrequins and fishtails. But it is important to remember the limitation: only curtains are acceptable that do not create excessive volume and do not look like small lumps of fabric on a giant opening.

In a bedroom with large windows, there is little point in saving on material. Moreover, experts recommend using freely flowing long curtains. It is very good if they form dense vertical folds.

It is worth paying attention to the selection of material of elegant color. Whether to make curtains monotonous or in two different colors is always decided individually.

In living rooms and halls, multi-tiered curtains are most often used, on which lambrequins are hung. Thin tulle is most often used as the bottom layer, and dense fabric is placed on top. When daylight comes, the heavy part of the curtains is pulled back. As soon as the evening twilight comes, the curtains are fully opened. If the room has a large height, sometimes the oblique cut is masked by hanging the curtains vertically.

Design of trapezoidal windows: basic rules, design options

For trapezoid-shaped windows, you can either use special cornices, or attach standard structures parallel to the contour of the window. As a rule, such models do not differ in functionality, and the illumination is regulated by grabs.

Fabric panels placed on sloping windows will create a very cozy and romantic atmosphere in the room.

The best solution would be to choose lightweight curtain fabrics.

When using fabric curtains, the main thing is to choose the right cornice.

A large dormer window in the shape of an irregular trapezoid is decorated with light tulle and curtains of the same color. The ceiling decoration hides the fastening elements and creates the impression that the panels are descending from above.

Curtains made of translucent, airy materials, such as organza or veil, look elegant and harmoniously complement the interior.

A window of any shape can be decorated stylishly and practically. Moreover, both beveled and asymmetrical window openings can be maximally functional. Don't be afraid to experiment.

Which cornice to choose

Hanging curtains on a triangular window is not easy, and the cornice here needs to be chosen with special attention. Choosing a cornice for unusual windows is perhaps not an easy task even for those men who have golden hands. The best option is to order a cornice along with a double-glazed window, because the manufacturers of such a product know what difficulties you will encounter and have foreseen this fact. But what to do if the triangular window is already of considerable age, and then the probability of finding a suitable cornice is small. But there is a way out.

For a window with two slopes, an option with two short wall cornices is suitable. You need to install them along the oblique sides of the window and the problem is solved.

If a non-standard opening has only one inclined side, then a regular straight cornice will help out. The curtains here will also have to be secured so that they do not slide down.

There are such elaborate window shapes for which it is impossible to choose a decent cornice. Then we are talking about a do-it-yourself mount. We screw wooden slats along the upper edges of the window to the wall. Then Velcro tapes, which are commonly used on children's clothing and shoes, are glued onto them. The second part of this tape is sewn along the edge of the curtain, and voila - the curtain for a non-standard opening without a cornice is ready! You just need to take into account the fact that such a product cannot be moved; only tiebacks or manual twisting like roller blinds will help to open the curtains.

This type of curtain fastening allows you to quickly and easily remove and hang curtains!

It is possible to completely dispense with cornices and curtain rails. This method will be less expensive than those we wrote about above. We sew fabric loops along the edge of the curtain, and attach beautiful decorative hooks to the wall at the same distance. And we hang ready-made curtains on them.

To prevent the curtains from moving: step-by-step instructions on how to secure the curtain rod

To hang canvases on a triangular opening, install 2 cornices if the sides of the frame going from the window sill to the ceiling are equal. For a structure shaped like a right triangle, one cornice located along the large side is sufficient. Curtains for triangular structures are hung on cornices with a wall mounting method.

Since the cornices on triangular windows are located at an angle, soft curtains will not stay in the upper part of the opening and will slide down. How to properly fasten curtains on a triangular window so that they are securely fastened, create a beautiful composition and serve as interior decoration?

The easiest way to keep curtains in an inclined position is to use Velcro. To hang a curtain using it, you need:

  1. Measure the length of the sides of the opening to which the curtains will be attached.
  2. Purchase 2 wooden blocks of small cross-section according to the obtained size.
  3. Glue one side of the adhesive fastener to them.
  4. Attach the bars along the contour of the frame.
  5. Sew the second part of the Velcro to the curtains.
  6. Hang the curtains.
  7. If necessary, decorate the protruding part of the bar with decorative braid.

If the curtains for triangular windows have the same shape as the opening, then when they are secured with adhesive tape, the curtains will not move apart. In such cases, tulle is most often used. Triangular curtains to fit the frame can be ordered from a studio or sewn yourself. In order for the curtains to be moved apart, hang 2 panels, which are tied on the sides with decorative tiebacks, magnets or braid.

For non-standard openings, instead of bars and Velcro, decorative hooks are also used, which are evenly placed on the bevels of the frame. Loops are made along the long side of the curtains, rings or ties are sewn on, and the curtains are hung on hooks.

You can hang the curtain on a triangular window on a standard cornice, securing the top ring motionless. This method is suitable for a frame in the shape of a right triangle.

Vertical blinds

Another functional design option is vertical blinds (there are special inclined blocks for such windows). As in the case of curtains, in the beveled part they cannot be moved apart, but the slats can be rotated around their axis. This is convenient because it allows you to regulate the amount of light.

Vertical blinds will look good in laconic interiors in a modern style, for example minimalism, hi-tech. They are not suitable for a classic style or a country wooden house. Textiles are needed here.

How to choose curtains for sloping windows

If you are the owner of such non-standard openings, you need to take a responsible approach to the choice of textiles. You must remember the following rules:

  • Thin, plain curtains look best on such glass;
  • if the opening is small, it is best to use long curtains, which will visually increase the size of the glass;
  • to emphasize non-standard geometry, you can use lambrequins in addition to curtains;
  • combine different materials to add some flair; linen, silk and other eco-friendly materials will look especially beautiful.

It is very important that the interior design looks holistic and harmonious, so you should try to choose a suitable color palette for the curtains. These do not have to be curtains of the same color; you can choose contrasting colors, but still do not forget about the harmony of shades and colors. An excellent and universal solution would be curtains made of light transparent material or white curtains.

Thus, it will be simply impossible to hang ordinary curtains or tulle on a sloping window; you will need special curtains. When choosing curtains, pay attention to the fabric. It should not be too dense and its ability to form a beautiful drapery will be a winning addition. The size of the fabric should be slightly larger than the size of the opening where you are going to attach it.

Prints

Large bright patterns, small prints or no pattern at all? It's not just a matter of taste and style preferences. Bright large drawings enliven the space, but at the same time they can visually reduce or overload it. Therefore, such textiles are appropriate as the main color accent in a spacious room.

Geometric prints are almost a classic, which will also help adjust the shape of the room. Vertical lines visually lift the ceiling, while horizontal lines make the room wider. Use these optical illusions to create the right shape for your room.

Floral designs will be appropriate in interiors decorated in the spirit of country, Provence, eco or even classic.

Where can I get suitable window textiles?

Perhaps we will upset fans of budget options a little - so that it’s cheap and cheerful. In the case of such non-standard window openings, this option is practically excluded. Because it is impossible to purchase ready-made curtains for triangular windows: you must take into account the specific parameters of these same windows.

Therefore, there are two options: order curtains from special studios that sew window kits (this can be quite expensive, but will ensure professional quality work), or sew them yourself if you have sufficient sewing skills. Although, a budget option is also possible: it is suitable if you decide not to emphasize the unusual shape of the window, but to disguise it. Then it’s enough to purchase a classic set of curtains and drapes, hang them from above on a regular straight cornice, choosing a combination of colors and textures that suits the design of the room. To completely hide the top, add a beautiful lambrequin to this set. You can also choose a Roman model: it will allow you to adjust the lighting and hide the angularity of the structure.

In this way, you can cover the shape of a triangular window by using double roller blinds and lightly draping them

However, most often the owners want to focus specifically on the originality of the shape of the window opening.

Stylistic nuance

Quite often, residential buildings with similar window openings are built from wood, which leaves its mark on their decoration with textiles. The natural texture of wood is best emphasized by tulle “like grandma’s” - remember, this is how our grandmothers curtained their windows, which created a special rustic flavor. At the same time, naturally, the overall style of the room should obey this idea.

What models are suitable for a triangular opening?

If you want to emphasize its unusual shape, then the classic version “does not fit here.” We are looking for others.

At the same time, lambrequins, ruffles, fringe and other decorations are not prohibited, but should be used minimally so as not to unnecessarily distract attention from the window itself and not to overload the interior with accents.

Mounting features

So, you already understand that standard curtain rods are only suitable in one case: if you decide to hide the shape of the window. In other cases, you will have to fasten two cornices at an angle.

An easy way to make curtains for skylights with your own hands

Do not hurry. This is completely useless when it comes to the most important element of attic decor. Approach the matter carefully and with creativity - this is the only way you will achieve the desired result. Of course, such a project requires at least minimal sewing skills - it is unlikely that a beginner will be able to handle such a volume of fabric with accurate calculations the first time.

  1. It all starts with the choice of materials. Use only high-quality fabrics that, as a result of the work, will look exactly like in catalogs or your ideas, if this is an original concept. Calculate the quantity and purchase 20-30% more fabric - this practically guarantees that there will be enough material under any circumstances.
  2. Carefully measure your window opening or openings. It’s good if the windows are the same, so you can use one pattern for all the curtains. Don’t be afraid to leave a lot of fabric for draping, as everything unnecessary can be removed in the process without loss.
  3. Start transferring the pattern onto the fabric. Here, too, you don’t need to spare any effort; mark all the details and little things with chalk. After carefully marking, cut out the pattern pieces, but don't forget to take into account the space for seams and the need to hem the fabric at the very last stages.
  4. When sewing the finished parts, do not forget to take into account the characteristics of the fabric from which your future curtains are made. Professionals, as well as factory curtain manufacturers, often use different types of closed seams to bring the appearance of the back side as close as possible to the front side. After preparations, sew the fabric.
  5. Finish all seams and edges, as well as the top where the part for fastenings will be located. All imperfections and minor mistakes that you may have made during the process can be easily hidden at this stage - you just need a little care.
  6. Take care of the fastenings. Their type is not important - you can choose any one, from loops to eyelets, the main thing is that you personally find it convenient to work with it later. You don't have to worry about top mounts in the early stages, as adding them doesn't affect the overall piece.
  7. Now you need to hang the almost finished product on the cornice. This is necessary so that you can clearly examine all the possible minor flaws in your work and immediately eliminate them - for example, straighten the length.
  8. If everything is fine, then you can leave the curtain hanging in its rightful place, and in case of minor problems such as damaged seams, remove it, fix the problem and hang it back.

More on this topic: Hanging curtains beautifully

As you can see, making curtains for the attic is practically no different from the same process for the windows of ordinary rooms. You just need to carry out the calculations a little more carefully to avoid your own unnecessary expenses. In return for your efforts, you will get a unique opportunity to create your own, unique curtains and not overpay the agency for it. The advantages are obvious - a special design that will certainly suit you, full compliance with the interior already existing in the attic, speed and reduced cost.
