What is velor
Velor fabric is a fleecy, soft, strong, durable fabric.
From French “velours” is translated as “velvet”, and from Latin – as “hairy”. Velor is made from wool yarn, the pile of which is slightly longer than that of velvet fabric. The pattern on velor fabric is different; on this basis, velor is divided into several types: smooth, embossed, shaped.
Cleaning products
To remove dirt from a velor sofa, both folk remedies and store-bought ones are used.
Often used:
- soap solution;
- vinegar solution;
- aqueous solution of aspirin;
- heating with an iron;
- special products for cleaning velor.
Each of these products is suitable for removing a specific type of contaminant.
Folk remedies
Products used to remove stains from fabric:
- Contamination from tea, coffee, or any other coloring drink or liquid can be easily washed with soap and water. A weak solution of vinegar and water also helps get rid of such stains.
- Stains from fruit juices can be removed with an aqueous solution of ammonia and vinegar.
- The blood is washed off with cold water and a small amount of liquid or laundry soap.
- Grease or wax stains are removed by heating: a cotton cloth is applied to the area of contamination and ironed with a hot iron.
Chewing gum is frozen with a small piece of ice, after which it falls off on its own.
Specialized means
The most famous cleaning product for fleecy surfaces is Vanish. The substance is sold in the form of a foam solution, which is applied to the stain or to the entire fabric.
Once the cleaning agent has dried, remove it with a vacuum cleaner.
Furniture is cleaned quickly and efficiently . Store-bought solutions are easy to work with, they act quickly, they smell nice, but their price does not always suit the consumer.
Grandmother’s “recipes” for getting rid of dirt
Time will not be spared, there will come a time when the sofa will lose its former “shine”, the culprit is ordinary dust. Let's remember folk methods. First. For a liter of water, take a teaspoon of vinegar and two salts. We are looking for a large piece of plain material. Soak in the solution, squeeze, cover the sofa or chair. Use a firecracker to knock out the dust. The matter has completely turned black, which means the process is over. Second. Take a spoonful of table salt per liter of water. Soak a small piece of gauze in the solution. We wrap it around the nozzle of the vacuum cleaner and vacuum it with all our hearts. We assure you that this simple method will quickly add grandeur to your favorite velor chair or sofa. A solution of baking soda will remove the stain or oily area.
Let's remember the actions:
- Pour one tablespoon of washing powder and baking soda directly into a spray bottle. Pour a third of vinegar into a glass and pour into the mixture. Add water to the full internal volume of the device.
- We treat the spots with the composition.
- Clean with a sponge, not too much.
Remember! Only complete cleaning from the edges to the middle will help to avoid streaks.
If there are only a few hours left before guests arrive, a clothes steamer and a soft brush will help. Velor does not tolerate aggressive detergents, especially those based on alkalis. Incredibly, a simple carpet shampoo turns out to be the best solution. A proven alternative is car interior chemicals.
Attention! Do not take hasty actions, test the effect of the product on an area that is hidden from view. See how the detergent performs. If you see rusty or white stains, refuse to treat the product yourself.
Recommendation! Thrifty owner, do not forget that things, like people, require attention and care. Periodic cleaning significantly extends the life of the item, preserving the original qualities of velor fabrics over the entire period of time. Indeed, household and folk remedies do an excellent job with their assigned mission, if you act wisely.

Cleaning algorithm
At home, the process of cleaning a velor sofa will not take much time and effort if everything is done correctly.
Stains are removed according to the following principle:
- preliminary cleaning of the sofa upholstery using a vacuum cleaner or a special brush;
- soaking stubborn stains in a soap solution (the product should not drain from the rag);
- removing dirt with a rag or sponge (you can’t force or rub the fabric, you need to act delicately);
- drying the upholstery naturally or with a hairdryer;
- steaming fabric with an iron to restore its original appearance.
In accordance with this algorithm, all superficial or stubborn stains are removed. Depending on the type of contamination, various means are used.
Cleaning Features
During use, greasy stains may appear on a sofa upholstered in velor, dust or animal hair may settle.
To prevent dirt from becoming persistent and ingrained deep into the fibers, it is recommended to vacuum the sofa daily and, if necessary, use special rubber attachments on the vacuum cleaner.
Other recommendations:
- To preserve the appearance of the velor material, only soft brushes are used during the cleaning process, the bristles of which will not damage the fleecy fabric.
- It is not recommended to clean velor with fluffy cloths, which leave marks on the fabric. It is good to replace them with a sponge, microfiber cloth or cotton cloth. They will carefully clean the upholstery without leaving lint or threads on the surface.
- The material is cleaned only along the pile, but not against it, otherwise bald spots may appear on the fabric.
- Powder products cannot be used: they dissolve poorly, become embedded in the base of the fabric, and make the upholstery look untidy.
- It is not recommended to use solvent or bleach as a cleaning agent. These substances discolor the material, and instead of a greasy (dirty) stain, a whitish stain appears.
To clean velor fabric, you can safely use a mild soap solution and a cotton cloth.
Cleaning stubborn stains
It is not so easy to remove stains from blood, juices, tea or coffee at home, but there are simple, proven methods for them.
Blood
Fresh blood is washed off with cold water, then blotted with a clean, absorbent cloth.
Dried blood can be scraped off with a hard object, cleaned with a brush, then wipe the stain with a solution of washing powder that contains a stain remover.
It is not recommended to use stain removers with chlorine separately for cleaning colored velor fabrics: they discolor the area of the fabric to which they are applied.
Wine
Wine and blood stains are washed off with aspirin: the tablet is crushed to a powder, dissolved in 250 ml of warm water and the stains are wiped with the solution.
Tea coffee
Such stains can be easily removed with a regular solution of diluted soap. Instead of toilet soap, you can use laundry soap: it is more effective. As soon as the dirt is removed, the velor is cleaned from the soap solution with clean water.
Advantages and disadvantages
The advantages include:
- has a spectacular appearance and will look great as upholstery material for a sofa in the living room or bedroom;
- is able to create an atmosphere of home and comfort in the room;
- it is pleasant to touch;
- able to pass air well;
- does not stretch.
The disadvantages are:
- it is difficult to get rid of absorbed stains;
- the fabric wears out over time and the lint falls out;
- after five years it loses its visual appeal
- requires careful care.
Advantages of velor upholstery
Velor upholstery has undoubted advantages. Soft and velvety, with a slight shine, it favorably emphasizes the smooth or straight shapes of sofas. Velor drapes beautifully, which is why designers love it so much. Touching such fabric is so pleasant that you want to touch it again and again, to feel its soft silkiness on your palms.
It will bring an aristocratic accent to any interior. The complex color palettes of the fabric are built on a combination of refined nuances and muted undertones.
The fastest ways to cleanse
Grease stains can be easily removed with salt or soda. As soon as the oily substance gets on the sofa upholstery, sprinkle it with a small amount of table salt and after 3-5 minutes remove it with a vacuum cleaner, and blot the stain with a clean damp cloth.
Fruit juice stains are quickly removed with a mixture of ammonia and vinegar (9%) in equal parts. Once the solution is absorbed into the contaminated area, blot it with a clean sponge.
Technology depending on the type of pollution
Cleaning a sofa is not as difficult as it seems, although it is a more labor-intensive process than regular spring cleaning. Fighting dust, grease, removing dirt from drinks, working with food or non-food stains require different procedures.
Dust
Taking good care of furniture does not prevent it from getting dirty. Periodic wet cleaning of the room is powerless - textile upholstery is still susceptible to dust settling. To remove it, systematic cleaning is needed. If it is not produced, the amount of dirt increases, the fabric loses its former freshness and softness. To eliminate such a defect, you can use several methods:
- knocking out;
- cleaning with a vacuum cleaner or damp sheet.
Simply knocking out the dust will not bring effective results. The flying particles will simply linger in the room and re-settle on the furniture. That is why such work must be combined with another method.
A regular vacuum cleaner is no less effective. It is better when the unit has high power. Various attachments will come in handy when processing hard-to-reach places. You can even remove them completely to clean them directly with a hose only.
Salinity
The sofa gets dirty during intensive use without the use of covers and covers. If such unpleasant contaminants appear, the procedure will be as follows:
- Clean the furniture with a vacuum cleaner or damp sheet. To enhance the effect, the cloth can be soaked in a mild vinegar solution. Then you need to cover the product and knock it out.
- The upholstery should be sprinkled with salt, especially in the most greasy places. Leave it for an hour so that it can absorb the fat. Then remove with a vacuum cleaner.
A good tool in the fight against fat content is glycerin. A cotton pad soaked in the solution will help to perfectly clean the sofa. This method is applicable only to dark fabrics; for a light white sofa, you should use milk and chalk diluted with water. Greasy armrests and folds should be treated first. After that, you need to move on to general cleaning of the upholstery.
You can also take laundry soap. This is one of the best remedies. It will help restore the upholstery to its original appearance, ridding sofas of stains without streaks. The procedure is as follows:
- grate a bar of soap;
- add water to the shavings, turn everything into a homogeneous mixture, mixing thoroughly;
- moisten the sponge in the solution and rinse the contaminated surface with it;
- wash off the foam and let the product dry.
Dry cleaning of sofas at home is not very popular. Many housewives use a solution of ammonia, soda and vinegar. The substance is mixed with water in equal quantities. Then the composition is applied to the surface. After a few minutes, it is removed using a washing vacuum cleaner or a damp sponge.
If the sofa is too wet, you can resort to additional drying. A hairdryer or fan is suitable for this purpose, but you should not use heaters or similar devices.
Features of care
When choosing furniture for your home, it is worth learning about how upholstery is cared for during use. You also need to figure out how to clean your velor sofa upholstery if it gets stained.
In order for a velor sofa to serve for a long time and maintain its appearance, you must follow the rules of caring for it:
- use a vacuum cleaner regularly - this will prevent premature contamination of the velor fabric;
- fresh stains are easier to remove than old ones: as soon as a coloring liquid in the form of juice or coffee gets on the upholstery, you should immediately blot the stain with an absorbent sponge or napkin;
- if the velor cover is removable, it can be washed in a washing machine at a water temperature not higher than + 30 ᵒC;
- It is strictly forbidden to wring out the fabric by hand - this spoils the appearance of the fabric, streaks and bald spots appear;
- velor upholstery is dried naturally, not ironed;
- If, after cleaning or washing, the pile becomes wrinkled, it is combed and lifted with a cleaning brush (medium-hard bristles).
Home or professional cleaning products are tested on an inconspicuous area.
How and with what can you remove such stains? This is what cleaning professionals and experienced housewives advise.
To remove stains from the surface of a velor sofa, the following are traditionally used:
- Universal cleaning products produced by chemical industry enterprises.
- Folk remedies, many of which are available in almost every home.
What you may need to effectively clean a velor sofa:
- soft rags, washcloths, microfiber cloths;
- roller for removing lint and wool;
- spray;
- household appliances (vacuum cleaner, iron);
- individual protection means.
All-purpose cleaners with proven effectiveness are best used after testing on an inconspicuous area of fabric. When choosing them, you must follow the manufacturer's recommendations and instructions for caring for fabrics that require delicate treatment.
