Most people consider upholstered furniture to be the embodiment of comfort in the home. When we return to our apartment after finishing our work shift, it’s so nice to relax in a chair or on the sofa with a book or watching a TV series. Therefore, for many, the question of how to clean these furnishings is relevant.

It's easiest to leave this job to professionals, but not everyone can afford this option. Of course, this method should not be discarded either, but many, even complex stains (blood, child urine, wine) can be dealt with at home, and it will cost much less. We present to your attention step-by-step instructions that describe how to clean upholstered furniture.

Methods for cleaning upholstered furniture

Today, much experience has been accumulated in the field of home cleaning of upholstered furniture, which allows housewives to keep it tidy and clean. After all, everyone wants their favorite sofa to look like new longer. All home cleaning methods are divided into two groups: cleaning with special household chemicals and without them.

1.

Cleaning using household chemicals.

Before purchasing a chemical intended to remove contaminants, you need to carefully study two points:

  • will the upholstery be damaged by such cleaning;
  • What types of fabrics or skin is this product intended for cleansing?

A variety of materials are used to produce sofas and armchairs. And some of them require special treatment and the most delicate approach.

The problem of cleaning upholstered furniture yourself using home methods must be thoroughly and comprehensively studied:

  • If you use removable covers when using sofas and armchairs, then, as a rule, washing them with ordinary powders in a washing machine is suitable. But first check the markings on the covers, which indicate how to care for them and whether they can be machine washed to avoid deformation. Most likely, a delicate wash cycle and a mild detergent will handle the stains.
  • Regular non-removable upholstery will have to be cleaned directly on the sofa with special cleaning compounds. First, find out whether this product will damage the upholstery material. To do this, you need to apply a little product where it will not be noticeable. If the safety test is passed and the fabric passes the test, you can continue cleaning the product.

  • When using the cleaning solution, you need to make sure that the sofa does not become too wet, as it will be difficult to dry it later. In this case, there is also a possibility that it will not be possible to apply the cleaning solution evenly over the entire surface, and then after rinsing, stains may remain, which is undesirable.
  • When the upholstery is dry after cleaning, final cleaning is carried out using a vacuum cleaner. Developers of modern household cleaning products prove that the problem of removing dirt from the surface of sofas and armchairs disappears if you use this method.

2.

Cleaning dirty furniture without chemicals.

If some objective reasons do not allow you to use chemicals, for example, you have a small child or animal in your family, or people who are prone to allergies live with you, then you will have to resort to one of the options for removing stains and other contaminants without special chemicals :

  • An effective cleaning solution that can deal with stains of various origins can be prepared using laundry or liquid soap. The prepared product is applied to the surface by moistening a cotton napkin in it.

Basic rules

Any chair, regardless of its purpose, is cleaned according to the rules. First the upholstery is processed, then you can move on to the frame. These two stages will require different tools. While the upholstery is being processed, the frame should be covered so that a cleaning composition unsuitable for this material does not get onto the surface. It is important to adhere to the following recommendations:

  1. It is recommended to first test any product on an inconspicuous area.
  2. Do not use hot water for cleaning.
  3. If you need to treat kitchen chairs or a computer (office) chair, it is recommended to select products that effectively dissolve grease.
  4. You should apply the cleaning composition not to the stain, but to the sponge. However, it should not be too wet.

After cleaning a product with a soft seat, you must carefully remove any remaining detergent. Do not use preparations containing chlorine. They discolor the fabric and can contribute to its deformation.

When processing, it is prohibited to use aggressive chemicals. They can cause an allergic reaction in people who use the chair daily.

Do not use hot water

Apply the cleaning compound to the sponge, not to the stain.

Types of fabrics for upholstered furniture and methods for cleaning them

You cannot use the same methods when cleaning different types of coatings; this can lead to unpredictable results. Before cleaning your furniture, you need to find out how the material will behave:

  • Leatherette upholstery should not be rubbed with a hard brush or chemicals with acid applied to it. For the procedure, take a regular sponge or soft brush. Alternatively, a damp melamine sponge will do.
  • Velor can be easily cleaned with neutral detergents. Soak a cloth or napkin in the solution and move it in the direction of the pile, removing excess liquid.

  • Suede or nubuck will not withstand high temperatures. Moreover, such upholstery should not be heavily moistened.
  • For tapestry surfaces, only dry cleaning with soft vacuum cleaner attachments is suitable.
  • Practical and unpretentious vinyl will not be damaged by wet cleaning with detergents.
  • You can remove dust and dirt from leather upholstery with a cloth with plain water or a special leather product. If stains cannot be removed, treat them with a weakly concentrated cleaning solution, but do not leave it on for long. Wipe thoroughly to avoid streaks.

  • You need to clean the white upholstery of sofas and armchairs with a white sponge and any optical brightener. Finally, wipe with a cloth soaked in water.

Choosing a product depending on the upholstery

Before you clean your chairs, you need to find the right product. The composition should be chosen depending on what the furniture is upholstered with. In addition to the characteristics of the materials, it is important to consider the color of the chair. For dark upholstery, you cannot use a soap solution (after drying, unsightly white stains may remain); for light upholstery, dark-colored preparations are not suitable.

Material What can you clean with? What not to use
Synthetics Preparations for cleaning car seats White spirit, varnishes and turpentines
Velor and flock Alcohol and soap solutions Solvents that contain gasoline or acetone
Tapestry Laundry soap, water-based detergent Formulations containing alcohol
Chenille Soap solution, a mixture of water and ammonia Automotive facilities
Silk Water-based preparations White spirit, gasoline, turpentine
Microfiber Mild detergent diluted with water Bleaches

When processing natural and artificial leather, it is prohibited to use stain removers, varnishes and turpentines. A soap solution works well for quickly removing stains. Detergents for fabrics that require delicate care also provide excellent results.

Before cleaning a leather chair, the upholstery should be slightly wet - you can spray it with water from a spray bottle.

Basic recommendations and useful care tips

To keep upholstered furniture in good condition, be it a home or office computer chair, it is important to follow simple recommendations related to its care. Namely:

  1. Clean periodically using a vacuum cleaner with a special attachment. In the absence of such an opportunity, you can resort to a regular brush.
  2. At least once a month, treat with a steam cleaner, which will prevent the development of harmful insects and fungal microorganisms in the upholstery material. In addition, exposure to steam eliminates unpleasant odors, greasy stains, dust and other contaminants.
  3. Use only delicate cleaning agents that do not harm the upholstery material.
  4. After each vacuum cleaning, wipe the surface with a slightly damp cloth or piece of cloth.
  5. Try to remove stains as soon as they appear.
  6. Treat the surface of leather furniture with stearic lubricant. The recommended frequency of this procedure is once every 6 months.
  7. To care for upholstered furniture, choose only those products that are suitable for the type of upholstery material.
  8. When removing stains from woven surfaces, avoid intense mechanical impact, otherwise dirt will penetrate into the fiber structure. It is advisable to wipe stains with a sponge or soft cloth that has high absorbent properties.
  9. Treat the problem area with light circular movements, moving from the edge to the center. This will prevent the stain from spreading over the entire surface.
  10. Dry treated surfaces thoroughly.

Strict adherence to all rules will help extend the life of the chairs and preserve their original appearance for many years.

How to clean upholstered furniture at home quickly and effectively

Most often you have to think about how to clean the upholstery of upholstered furniture from stains left by:

  • fat;
  • wine;
  • coffee and tea;
  • pieces of food;
  • cream;
  • plasticine;
  • paints;
  • ointment;
  • urine.

And first of all, layers of dust settle on upholstered furniture.

Now let’s talk about how and what you can use to clean upholstered furniture from dust accumulation. There are two simple methods that can be performed one after the other:

  • Knockout method.
    Of course, we are not suggesting that you take your sofa out of the house to give it a good beating outside. To clean it in the room without raising a cloud of dust, you need to do the following: wet and wring out a large sheet, fold it in half and cover the surface, now you can knock it out. It is clear that dust will rise from the inside and linger on the dampened sheet. At the end, you will see that the cloth has collected all the dirt and the sofa is clean.
  • Vacuum cleaning.
    A vacuum cleaner will help to consolidate the result of preliminary cleaning by knocking it out. It’s good if your equipment has a power control mode and appropriate attachments for processing upholstered furniture. After the procedure, the upholstery will look fresher and brighter. The entire surface should be cleaned so that the back and armrests are not left unattended.

So, the first stage is completed - you have removed the dust. But now previously invisible stains can be detected on the surface. Let’s take a closer look at how to clean upholstered furniture from stains. Here are a few folk recipes for different occasions:

  • You should quickly put a dry cloth on coffee and tea stains, then wipe with a damp cloth, soaking it in a solution of soap and vinegar. The composition is as follows: soap solution - 1 liter, 9% vinegar - two tablespoons.
  • Quickly remove spilled wine with a damp cloth before it is absorbed into the upholstery, then add salt and leave for an hour.

  • Traces of fruits and juices are removed with a solution of equal parts vinegar and ammonia, and after drying, wipe the area with a damp towel.
  • It is better not to touch drops of chocolate or condensed milk immediately, but to let them dry. Dried dirt can be easily removed with the blunt side of a knife or a spatula. A soap solution and a soft brush will completely remove the stain.
  • Sprinkle salt or starch onto the greasy stain, wait for it to be absorbed and then wash.

  • Greasy areas can be cleaned well with a soap solution, after which the area is wiped with a cloth and clean water.
  • Dried chewing gum will come off the upholstery if you apply an ice pack to it for 10 minutes.
  • Blood stains are difficult to remove. They should not be cleaned with warm or hot water. Very quickly dilute aspirin and salt in cold water, wipe the area until all traces of blood are removed.
  • Ink blots can be dealt with by wiping them with acetone or nail polish remover.

You will have to make more efforts if the smell of urine remains on the upholstered furniture, especially from a cat. The released substances are almost insoluble in water. To make the smell disappear, try using traditional methods:

  • To clean dark-colored furniture from the smell of human urine, use iodine tincture; to do this, take 15–20 drops of a 5% alcohol solution of iodine per liter of water. With this cleaning composition you need to deeply moisten the inner layers of the sofa filler. For light-colored fabric, the following products are suitable: vinegar or lemon juice dissolved in water in a ratio of 2-3 tablespoons per half liter of water, or a weak solution of potassium permanganate.
  • Since it is not easy to clean upholstered furniture from cat urine, you will have to carry out several stages of treatment. First of all, wet the entire upholstery fabric with a mixture of one part 9% vinegar and three parts water and wait until dry. Next, sprinkle the area to be treated with soda and apply a solution of hydrogen peroxide on top using a spray bottle; to do this, dilute a pharmacy bottle of this product with 0.5 liters of water. The foaming process will begin. Leave this foam for a couple of hours to work. Finally, wipe the sofa with clean napkins.

If you don’t know how to clean upholstered furniture, try Vanish; according to reviews, it can remove almost any stain. It is considered a universal product, the formula of which takes into account many factors, so it works effectively on different fabrics. It is enough to hold it on the stain for 10-15 minutes, and it disappears. If “Vanish” is not available, you can use a foaming shampoo by adding 3-5 drops of ammonia to it.

The steaming method will also be an excellent replacement for cleaning furniture with household chemicals. According to the instructions, a jet from a household steamer or vacuum cleaner with a steam generator is directed onto the surface to be treated. After a minute, wipe with a dry cloth.

TOP 10 ways to clean upholstered furniture with soda

In addition, the cost is low. We have collected a dozen expert ways to clean upholstered furniture from dirt at home using soda.

Soda can be described as a mild and gentle cleaning agent. But even it cannot be considered 100% safe and suitable for cleaning any upholstery. Approach responsibly, and it is better to first test any folk remedy, even one that has been tested, on a small area of the sofa upholstery, where it will not be noticeable. This is especially true for leather, as well as linen, silk, cotton or wool coverings. As a result of improper processing, the structure or shade of the fabric may change.

First steps and precautions

Before you start cleaning at home, you first need to determine the type of upholstery material - fabric, artificial or natural leather. If the covering is made of fabric, you need to find out its type. It can be microfiber, velvet, tapestry, velor or flock. All these fabrics require different cleaning methods.

The second stage of preparation is testing the cleaning agent on an inconspicuous area of the chair, for example, on its back side. The obtained result will allow us to draw a conclusion about the possibility of using a specific preparation to clean the entire surface of the chair.

Important! When caring for upholstery material, it is unacceptable to use bleach and undiluted vinegar.

Simple rules

Despite the simplicity of the recipes, home cleaning has its own subtleties. Rules to help avoid unpleasant surprises:

  1. Before dealing with stains on your sofa, vacuum the upholstery.
  2. It is better to cover the fittings with film.
  3. The floor near the sofa is covered with oilcloth or an old sheet.
  4. You can avoid streaks by applying the composition to the entire surface.
  5. Detergents containing chlorine are prohibited.
  6. Light upholstery should only be cleaned with a white cloth.

Cleaning dirt on the sofa and armchair

Some young housewives are thinking about how to clean the sofa from everyday dust and dirt. The most easily removed and widespread pollutant is dust from exhaust gases. Of course, dust and soot can settle on any surface. However, due to the ability to accumulate static electricity, soft upholstery attracts dirt the most. Cleaning a leather sofa is done with a damp cloth, which removes dust. But covering with a pile comes down to removing stains with a vacuum cleaner with a special attachment for fabric. This method allows you to eliminate not only minor dirt, but also dust inside the upholstery.

If you clean a light-colored sofa with a liquid, the surface will subsequently become covered with noticeable stains. Old stains of this type are almost impossible to remove.

It is best to carry out preventive dust control, which will prevent the appearance of unwanted stains on the fabric.

If in the process of removing dirt it is not possible to use a vacuum cleaner for various reasons, or the upholstery fabric is simply velor, then dust stains can be removed using a stick and knocking out. There are several ways to clean a sofa with baking soda and vinegar.

To clean a light-colored sofa and prevent stains, you can use traditional methods:

  • Moisten the sheet in a special solution. To prepare the cleaning product, you need to dissolve 2 tablespoons of ordinary vinegar in 1 liter of water.
  • The sheet must be wrung out well so that it is slightly damp. This process can be done manually or using a washing machine and spin cycle.
  • You need to cover the entire sofa with a damp sheet and beat it thoroughly with a clapper. It is necessary to strike with a stick on the back, seat, and armrests.
  • After cleaning, the sheet should be removed and the upholstery should be thoroughly dried.
  • An important condition for cleaning is for the fabric to dry completely after the procedure. If the sofa is used while still wet, then stains cannot be avoided. A hairdryer will not help speed up the process. After all, due to uneven heating, hateful stains and additional stains can form. And all efforts will be wasted.

Cleaning greasy furniture surfaces

If you do not clean your furniture regularly, you may see dark spots on its surface over time. As a rule, they form on the front edge of the seat, on the back of furniture in the area of the back, legs and head of a person. The formation of shiny dirt is caused by the interaction of dust particles and human sebum. If such stains appear on artificial leather or leather, the stains can be easily removed with a sponge that has been previously moistened in a soda solution or detergent with added water. Such products dissolve any fat well, but do not harm the surface itself.

Upholstery that does not have lint can be washed with soda or detergent using a brush. To do this, first apply foam to the stain for 10 minutes and then wash it off with ordinary water. The cleaning area must be blotted with a dry cloth. The removal process can be repeated several times in a row until the stain disappears. After the stain has become noticeable, you need to treat the entire surface of the sofa with the same soap solution. In this case, its concentration should be reduced several times.

This sequence of the process will prevent stains from forming in the place where there was previously a greasy stain. There should not be a lot of dishwashing detergent in the solution. After all, they can also cause streaks on the surface of the product.

When removing stains from flock or velor coverings, you must use a sponge. As a cleaning agent, you can use soap, Vanish or ordinary detergent. There should be no difficulty in treating stains on a dark-colored sofa, but after removing the stain, light-colored coverings must be cleaned completely to prevent streaks on the fabric.

Selecting the right method and means for cleaning the surface of upholstered furniture will extend the life of your favorite chair or sofa, and at the same time please the eyes of others with its appearance.

Natural leather care

Leather is considered the most wear-resistant material. It is able to withstand high loads for a long time. The chemical industry offers a huge range of care products. They will not only clean, but also prevent the formation of microcracks. Besides:

  • For cleaning, use only high-quality chemicals from reputable manufacturers;
  • never use several products at the same time;
  • for washing, choose soft fabrics such as microfiber;
  • grease stains, ink marks, and varnish can be easily removed with gasoline;
  • to prevent overheating, place the swivel chair at a distance of at least 30 cm from radiators and heaters;
  • To protect against excessive sunlight, sprays with a UV filter work well as a preventative measure. However, use only products with a high level of protection.

Important! Wet cleaning should be carried out as quickly as possible. It is strictly forbidden to leave chemicals on the surface! Once the stool has been washed and cleaned, it should be dried quickly. Remove any remaining moisture as soon as possible. Otherwise, whitish spots may appear on the coating.

Removing various types of contaminants

Stain removers effectively remove local stains from fabric upholstery:

  • HG (Netherlands);
  • Dr Beckmann;
  • Udalix Ultra;
  • domestic soap "Antipyatin".

Bleach, even oxygen bleach, should be used carefully and tested on a small area.

A common problem with old used chairs is grease. They are removed with a solution of ammonia, fairy or household liquid soap diluted with water. Try cleaning the armrests and dirty areas on the back with shaving foam.

Many factors influence the susceptibility of matter to contamination. But there are rules that apply in all cases.

  1. Remove excess immediately. Remaining fat - with a sorbent, moisture - with a towel.
  2. Apply the stain remover to a cotton swab or napkin, not to the upholstery.
  3. Treat the contaminated area from the edges of the stain to the center using scraping rather than rubbing movements.
  4. At the end of the procedure, blot the moisture.
  5. Use a vacuum cleaner to clean the entire surface of the seat or backrest.

Hydrogen peroxide will completely get rid of fresh blood. Water with diluted vinegar or lemon juice will help remove the stain and smell of cat urine. An alternative option is products purchased at a pet store.

Plan deep wet treatment for the warm season or in winter, when the room is warm, so that the furniture dries faster.
