We have all encountered this problem sooner or later, and almost always the reason was obvious. Often, interior doors slam heavily due to a banal draft, or even when you simply close them. This characteristic sound occurs when the canvas hits the box. This irritates others and has a negative impact on the wooden structure itself.
If this is the entrance to a bathroom or any damp room, there is an option that the opening is simply saturated with moisture and swells, causing an unpleasant rumble. The cause may also be deformation of the box itself: over time it sags and does not allow it to close tightly.
Do not rule out initially incorrect installation of fittings, since this option is the most common, so during installation it is advisable to monitor all the actions of specialists and make sure that the work is done in compliance with all rules and regulations. A non-soundproof box or lack of filling inside the wooden panel can also be a reason.
Reasons why doors may make a knock that everyone dislikes

Seals
There are a number of types that differ in shape and are designed to bridge gaps of different thicknesses:
- C, K, E-shaped – for cracks no larger than 3 mm;
- P, V-shaped will close gaps up to 5 mm;
- O, D-shaped are provided for gaps up to 7 mm.
Seals are installed in pairs, depending on the size of the gap, for example, E and P-shaped, V and D-shaped. Rubber contours soften the impact of the door leaf on the frame, prevent iron surfaces from touching and muffle the sound.
How to protect yourself from “loud” malfunctions in the future
Ideally, in order not to repeat the situation with loudly closing interior doors, at the first call it is better to contact professionals so that they can fix the problem immediately, without complications. Sometimes self-repair can make the situation worse, so if the above methods do not help, it is better to contact the experts.
Firstly, wooden doors that are located closer to the restroom or bathroom need to be carefully monitored, or rather, covered with special wax so that condensation does not form on the surface, which in the future can be absorbed into the wood. Such rooms should be thoroughly ventilated or use forced ventilation for the same reason. Wiping the surfaces with a dry cloth is also fine. Secondly, always check the condition of hinges, locks and latches. Lubricate them if necessary - this will extend their service life. And finally: watch your movements and avoid sudden slamming.
There are no unsolvable issues, but it is important to remember the banal rules, the observance of which in the future will help you forget about the old, noisy door problems!

How to teach noisy upstairs neighbors a lesson
These little dirty tricks do not require serious preparation or any additional knowledge, but they are great on the nerves. So, what else can you do to annoy your harmful neighbors:
- Call a landline phone (preferably at night) and remain silent on the phone. Those who are familiar with a computer can install an auto-dialer program, which can be found on the Internet, and calls will be made in the next apartment without your participation.
- Burn the doorbell button for your noxious neighbors. This act may seem stupid, but war is war!
- Use spray paint and decorate your neighbor's metal door with a three-letter message (meaning "home," "peace," or "noise," of course).
- Buy a GSM jammer. This device will deprive neighbors of the ability to use the telephone and the Internet. You can even anonymously warn them that this will always happen if they don’t start respecting others.
- This method is only for those who are not squeamish; it can be called “shit on the door.” The offender's door can be smeared with feces (dog, cat or human). You can deliver the “weapon of revenge” in a bag (or better yet, two), and use rubber gloves.
- If funds allow, buy a speaker system and let your upstairs neighbors enjoy the hard rock! Just install the speakers closer to the ceiling.
Tabloid:
The following tips will help you emerge victorious from the “neighborhood war” and force noisy residents to consider the comfort of those around them.
The door slams: how to fix it and what to do?
If your door slams due to a draft or simply when closing, then there is now a simple and cheap solution to solve this problem. We will look at the problem in photo examples of eliminating this effect on an interior door.
The unpleasant sound of a slamming door occurs when the door leaf hits the frame. Hardly anyone will like this sound, it’s annoying, and there’s nothing good for the door itself, especially if it’s glazed. There is a risk that the glass may not hold up.
This can be solved by using self-adhesive seals on the selected part of the box, it’s simple, but there are some minor subtleties.
I’ll say right away that if you initially plan to avoid the sound of a slamming door, then the seals should be installed during the installation of the interior door, at least during the installation of the lock and its strike plate.
How to take revenge on noisy upstairs neighbors: practical advice
If it didn’t work out according to the law, persuasion doesn’t work, and at the top they are still drilling, moving, dropping, shouting and stomping, and even the music is blaring, it’s time for a “guerrilla war.”
Human imagination is sometimes amazing. There are many ways to harm a neighbor, but you should not resort to such actions as self-harm, damage to other people’s property, and the like. This could work against you and it is quite possible that you will need the help of a lawyer. Let's look at safe and effective ways to get back at your neighbors for making noise.
Analysis of the problem using photo examples
First of all, let's buy a self-adhesive seal, preferably one that matches the color of your door closer. Since my doors were already installed a long time ago, I chose the thinnest “E” shaped (there is also a shape in the shape of the letter “D”).
Personally, I only needed to solve the problem of the door slamming, so three meters of sealant were taken for two doors, since in fact there are two strips in a linear meter of material that can be easily separated.
As I wrote, we separate the tapes.
Separating the wax tape from the sticky part, we begin to stick it on the selected part of the box (the vestibule), where the door leaf touches the frame.
Then we also stick it on the transverse part of the box, this completely solves the problem of door knocking.
Even one strip of material is glued to the door frame from the lock side, eliminating the problem of the door slamming, but a gap appears on top, for this purpose glue is applied at the top.
If you have a door with a threshold, then with the help of a seal you can not only get rid of the door slamming, but also increase sound insulation and avoid the slightest draft. To do this, the door frame is glued all around, only the door frame on the hinge side is glued with a seal not in the selected part of the frame (as before), but perpendicular to it, close to it.
This is done so that the door leaf presses it naturally.
That’s the whole way to improve your door, but another problem immediately arose, which I also decided to show.
Big gap
The complete opposite of the previous defect is an overly wide shutter. Even in a fully closed position, there remains a gap between the door and the hatch. The main cause of this problem is the thinning of the seal during prolonged use. If this is indeed the case, the rubber band needs to be replaced. Before gluing a new tape, make sure that the gap around the entire perimeter is the same; if there are places where it is wider, you need to use an additional lining.
Often the problem of a large gap is solved by replacing the old, thinned seal with a new one
Another reason could be a similar defect, as with a tight shutter. How to adjust the backlash of an aluminum door if the tongue and the hole for the bolt entry do not match? In this case, you need to bend the antennae of the plate to a position that will ensure a tighter fit of the door to the frame. Less often, the situation can be corrected by adjusting the tension of the door sash by tightening the hinges. From time to time it is recommended to check the position of the door and adjust it.
Regularly renew the lubricant, this will extend the service life of all structural parts.
Timely adjustment of metal doors, done by yourself, is the key to long service life of the structure, protection from breakdowns and ensuring safety for all residents of the house.
Adjusting the lock striker
The door no longer slams, but the lock has stopped working because it was locked exactly in place; it needs to be reconfigured.
We slam the door and visually look where the lock tongue rests; if this is not possible, then we will smear the tongue with toothpaste, squeeze the handle, slam the door and sharply release the handle. Then press the handle again and open the door. The place where the tongue rests will be clearly visible from the toothpaste marks.
Using a chisel, we select the box for the new place where the tongue will fit and check by closing it again, if everything is fine, then...
We close the old holes for the screws with toothpicks or simple matches.
For aesthetics, it is desirable that the side of the strip facing the seal is slightly behind it or flush so that the cut of the old landing site is not visible.
It is for this reason that when installing a door and inserting a lock, I advise you to install seals, and only then actually insert the strike plate under the lock.
We attach the bar and use an awl to mark the places for new landing of the screws.
If necessary, bend the plate on the strike plate, which regulates the pressing of the door leaf to the frame with pliers.
Attention! For clarity, the pliers are shown without the protection elements of the chrome plated part of the bar, so perform this operation through thick fabric.
We check if everything works fine, then the job is done.
As you can see, if the door in the entrance or just a metal door slams, then seals will help solve this problem.

Cautions
Like any mechanism, a door closer can fall victim to unwise actions. In order to protect such a useful device from damage, you should follow some simple rules:
- To prevent the set diagonal from becoming skewed, under no circumstances should you hang heavy objects on the door leaf.
- While the door is closing, you should not put pressure on it, thereby trying to speed up its movement.
- The design of the closer must be in a level state; if a misalignment occurs, there is a risk of failure of the structure.
- You cannot turn the screws too much, as this will lead to oil leakage, which will adversely affect the operation of the mechanism. By the way, it is impossible to return the oil back at home.
- In order to hold the door in the open position, it is recommended to use a special function rather than propping the door with any object. This leads to a gradual breakdown of the mechanism.
- Before installing and adjusting the closer, you must carefully study the instructions supplied with the device by the manufacturer.
Having carefully studied all the above recommendations, every owner will know how to adjust their door closer so that it lasts as long as possible. In general, both the door closer itself and its adjustment are not something extremely complex and incomprehensible, and therefore, with sufficient theoretical training, everyone can master the adjustment processes.
Silicone Self Adhesive Door Bumpers
Seller's reliability: excellent!
A device for those who are annoyed by a loud slamming door, any door at that. The stickers are suitable for all types of doors: interior doors, cabinets, drawers, and so on. Installed on plastic, ceramics, wood, glass. You can use stickers to make something like an applique, for example, lay out a simple pattern. Bumpers operate extremely simply: you stick them to a surface, the door closes, rests against the sticker, and the sound of the impact is dampened. The set includes 30, 50 or 80 stoppers; the diameter and height of the product are selected upon purchase.
Velcro took a month and a half to arrive in Moscow. They look normal. The glue should also be normal, I’ve already bought these here, only in a smaller size. In Russia they were not tracked. They threw it in the mailbox.

"New thing"
The most important and most effective thing that can be done with a noisy door is to change the locks and screws to “quiet” ones. There are two ways to go here. The first is to go to an auto parts store and purchase a finished part there that is coated with rubber or any other similar insulating material. The second is to activate the Kulibin mode and make locks and hinges yourself based on those already in the car.
To do this, it is enough to divide a little rubber into the contacting metal parts. Or you can simply wrap the “noisy” elements in a couple of layers with regular blue electrical tape.

Brief overview of door hinges
First, as usual, a little theory. Doors open and close using hinges or canopies , and it depends on them and special shock absorbers whether your doors will close silently or with a knock.
The hinges vary depending on the degree of overlap on the side wall of the cabinet body; they are:
Canopies also differ in opening angle; there are many such hinges, but mostly you will come across hinges for false panels with an opening angle of 90 degrees, and hinges for corner cabinets and cabinets with an opening angle of +45 degrees.
Rice. 1. Overhead, semi-overhead, inset loops |
In addition, hinges can be for specific purposes, for example, for narrow aluminum doors, for glass doors and cabinets with internal drawers, and so on. Moreover, they, in turn, are divided into invoices, semi-invoices and inlays, not all of them, of course, but in some cases for sure.

Soundproofing
Need some advice. How to reduce noise from neighbors in a monolithic house?
There is a problem with sound insulation, the house is new, made of monolith (monolith panel). There is always a feeling that our neighbors live in our house. And this despite the fact that our apartment is on the top floor. The wiring in the walls is laid in pipes and we blame them for the fact that they resonate, the wall between the room and the kitchen. Has anyone encountered something similar and how did you solve the problem? There are thoughts of trying to soundproof the wall itself and the sockets, but something tells me that the noise won’t be much reduced.
What are the components of a door hinge?
The hinge itself consists of three parts, the first is the hinge cup, which is installed in the hole in the door, the second is the hinge arm, which connects the cup to the third part of the hinge with a strike plate. The strike plate is mounted on the side wall of the housing.
Rice. 6. Components of the loop |
We went over the hinges a little, now let's move on to studying the question of how to make the doors close without knocking .
Eliminating drafts
This problem is especially relevant in suburban housing, since there the front door often opens directly onto the street or into a cold, unheated vestibule. Although even in an apartment building, a draft from the door is a very unpleasant phenomenon, even if the entrance is warm. After all, cigarette smoke and other unpleasant odors penetrate into the apartment with it.
Traditional sealing involves gluing a self-adhesive seal in the form of a rubber band around the perimeter of the box. Unfortunately, this method is not very reliable.
- Firstly, during active use of the structure, the seal quickly becomes unusable and needs to be replaced.
- Secondly, the slightest distortion will lead to the fact that the seal will not fit tightly to the door and will not be able to perform its function efficiently.
Smooth closing of doors using hinges with integrated closer
Soft close hinges from Blum
Let's start our review of soft closing with an innovation from Blum. The innovation is that the soft closing system, you won't believe it, is built into the hinge cup. That is, by installing such a hinge, your doors will no longer close with a knock , even if you try to slam the door on purpose.
Rice. 7-8. Soft closing system integrated into the hinge cup |
What kind of kitchen door awnings did we use?
To open our doors, we used GTV Prestige external and twin hinges with an opening angle of 110° and a closer. Let's look at the marking schemes for their installation, as well as templates and devices.
Soft closing hinges from other manufacturers
What about hinges from other manufacturers? As an example, I will give a photo of hinges also with a shock absorption system, but not in the cup, but in the shoulder or in the striker, and we will also dwell on our own unsuccessful experience in using them.
Rice. 9-10. GTV and Blum hinges with closers |
Conclusion, such a system can be used in cabinets where the doors do not open often, that is, this is not an option for the kitchen. Only the Blum hinge showed reliable operation over time, stable, smooth closing of doors without noise .
Rice. 11-12. The hinge absorber is installed in the strike plate |
The difference in price between such hinges is about two times, but it’s better to spend money once and enjoy smooth closing than to buy new hinges.
Yes, and one more important point: Blum hinges are installed almost without tools; this installation system is called Clip Top .

Limitations in adjusting the closer
In order for the device to operate reliably and be easily adjusted, certain restrictions must be observed during its operation.
- When adjusting the mechanism, the screws cannot be turned from the original position by more than 2 turns. If the rule is not followed, oil will leak out, which will have a bad effect on the functionality of the structure, and repairing a door closer at home is quite complicated.
- During installation, care must be taken to ensure that the structure is not distorted, otherwise breakdowns are inevitable.
- It is unacceptable to prop an open door with various objects. There is a special option for this.
- Loading the canvas with heavy objects is prohibited, since the additional weight will cause the diagonal to skew.
Smooth closing of doors using shock absorbers or closers
Shock absorber or closer, which is installed on the hinge arm
This system in the form of an overlay is installed directly on the hinge arm. There are limitations here, such overlays can only be installed on Blum hinges and the design of the hinge must allow this. This information can be obtained from the seller. Let’s say at the moment you don’t have money for hinges with a built-in closer, but you can initially buy simple Blum hinges, and then buy additional hinge closers .

This is a more universal solution for shock absorption when closing doors, called door shock absorber . Such closers can be used for hinges that are not equipped with a shock absorption system.

The shock absorber can be installed in the following positions, according to the diagram. Usually, installing one door closer is sufficient.

Use door stops
They will stop the door before it hits the wall. There will be no marks left on the wallpaper, and the handle coating will not peel off.
There are 2 types of limiters:
- Wall mounted ones are made in the form of a pin with a rubber pad. They stop the door at the extreme point.
- Floor-mounted ones allow you to set any angle of limitation. Such stops are more compact.
How to calm a room door in a draft?
Silicone shock absorbers
Silicone shock absorbers are produced on a self-adhesive basis and are used as an addition to the main shock absorption systems. Such a circle is separated from the base and glued to the end of the body or facade.
Some furniture makers limit themselves only to silicone shock absorbers, but they will not ensure smooth closing of doors; they will only muffle the sound of the door when it is closed.
Rice. 26. Silicone shock absorbers |
Design options
According to the type of working mechanism, cam and gear devices are distinguished. The first ones are designed for installation on lightweight door structures. They provide easy and smooth door opening.
The design of the gear mechanism of the entrance door closer differs from the cam version in the presence of a spring and a gear system. The spring is compressed as a result of strong pressure on it when the door is opened. And when a person releases the door leaf, the spring opens on its own, the closing mechanism is activated, and the leaf is pulled tightly to the door frame.
Based on the type of drive, closers are divided into electric, hydraulic and thermal drives. The entire mechanism can be housed in a plastic or steel case. Also, different models of door closers are characterized by the power of opening/closing the door leaf.
The secret to securely attaching hinges
Hinge Cup Attachment
You can secure the hinge cup to the door using self-tapping screws, but there is a more reliable method of fastening using special spacer plugs and screws.
To install the plugs, you need to drill two holes with a diameter of 8 mm. Find out if such a service is provided in the place where you order drilling for awnings.
Rice. 27-28. Drilling the facade under the hinge cup and spacer plugs |
Rice. 29. Spacer plugs for attaching the hinge cup |
Rice. 30. Installation diagram for a hinge with Expando spacer plugs |
Mounting the strike plate
The strike plate can be secured to the side wall using self-tapping screws, Euroscrews, and the most reliable way is with Euroscrews of smaller diameter through spacer plugs.
The structure of the chipboard is loose and a self-tapping screw or Euroscrew may eventually break out of the chipboard and you won’t be able to screw it back in, you’ll have to glue in the chips, re-drill, and then, it won’t last long, you’ll have to change the side wall. Only a bar for spacer plugs will ensure long-lasting and reliable fastening.
Drilling is done with a drill with a diameter of 5 mm, similar to drilling for Euro screws.

How to deal with upstairs neighbors if they constantly flood
Are your upstairs neighbors constantly flooding you, and complaining seems useless? You can contact a lawyer and sue, but what to do when this is not possible?
Without legal assistance, of course, it will be difficult, but you can try. Under the place where water drips from the ceiling, fill your own floor! At first glance, this looks stupid, because the water will get to the lower neighbors. But when they come to you to find out what’s wrong, complain to them about the ones above, show them the stains on the ceiling. In this case, you won’t be the only one complaining about those who love to flood.
What to do if interior doors slam loudly when closing
It happens that the door begins to slam due to air flow or when opening, then to solve this issue there are now simple and inexpensive options for solving the problem. We will discuss this issue using the example of correcting this defect on interior doors.
Our problem can be solved by purchasing self-adhesive sealing material for the selected part of the box; it’s easy, but there are some nuances.
Let us immediately note that if you are initially thinking of preventing knocking from the door slamming, then the sealing material must be installed immediately when installing the door, or at the stage of installing the lock and its strike plate. First, we will purchase a self-adhesive sealing material that is similar in color to your door.
In my case, the doors were made many years ago, and were purchased in the thinnest “E” shape. At that moment, I needed to eliminate the sound of the door slamming, so I purchased three meters of sealing material for a couple of doors.
If you have a door with a threshold, then using sealing material you can not only remove the sound from the door slamming, but also increase noise insulation and prevent drafts. Next, the door frame is glued in a circle, only the door frame on the hinge side is glued with sealing material not to the selected part of the frame (as before), but perpendicularly.
All this is done so that the door leaf presses it naturally.
That's the whole method of improving the door.
How to take revenge on a neighbor who has a car
- place a cobblestone or brick on the hood of the car (this will serve as a warning);
- sprinkle more grain on the car and the surrounding birds will flock to the treat (and they will not only peck at the hood and roof, but will also “decorate” the surface with their waste);
- Douse your car with valerian - and all the cats in the area will “pop in for a visit” (traces from dirty paws and claws are guaranteed).
Never break car windows, puncture tires, or throw water-filled balloons onto the roof of a car. If you get caught, you will have a hard time without the help of a competent lawyer.
Setting up the lock bar
The door did not slam, but the lock does not function, because it was installed after the fact, it needs to be adjusted.
We twist the bar and close the door, look where the tongue of the lock is directed; if this is not possible, then we smear the tongue of the lock with paste, pull back the handle, close the door and sharply release the handle. Next, click on the handle and open the door. The surface where the lock tongue rests will be immediately detected by the paste mark.
It is for this purpose that when installing a door and installing a lock, it is usually always recommended to install sealing material, and after that install a strike plate under the lock.
