Main characteristics of hanging chair
The design of hanging chairs is similar to a rocking chair or a hammock. This product can be made from several materials: plastic, wicker, rattan or raffia. They are attached either to the ceiling or with a hook to a metal structure.
You can often hear this chair called a cocoon chair. And indeed it is. In appearance it looks like a cocoon. The chair gained popularity due to its ability to swing. Due to its size, the chair can be purchased even for a small apartment.
If we consider the weight of a person that this structure can support, it can range from 120 to 150 kilograms, depending on the material chosen. The cocoon model for hanging on a bracket from the ceiling weighs a little, about 20 kilograms. Therefore, it can be easily attached to the ceiling in any apartment.
Frameless hammock
To make it we will need: a cord, thick fabric with a diameter of one and a half by one and a half meters, a strip of wood and thread and a needle.
Once you have prepared everything you need, you can start working.
We make a fold on both sides of the fabric and stitch it. We thread the cord into the resulting hole. We attach its ends to the bar. We first make two holes in the edges of the bar and thread a cord through them. We tie it tightly into knots. We tie slings to the bar and hang the resulting structure.

Fastening
According to the fastening, the chairs are divided into the following types:
- Chairs that are supported on a counter. Such options are most often made from rattan. The chair comes with a mattress and pillows of various colors.
- Chairs that are held on the ceiling using a bracket. There are also different shapes and colors available here. When choosing such models, it is important to observe the maximum permissible weight.
There are several ways to attach chairs to the ceiling:
- Chemical anchor. It is a special paste that is injected into the hole in the structure and hardens. After complete hardening, the anchor is securely fixed. This method of fastening is considered by experts to be the most reliable and durable.
- Hook. It is attached in exactly the same way as the first option. It is necessary to make a hole in the ceiling and fill it with a special compound so that the hook is firmly fixed.
- Tire. If you do not have the opportunity to make the ceiling stronger, then you need to resort to using a tire or a special screen. The tire itself is mounted on the ceiling using a metal profile. Decorative panels will help close the finished bracket.
DIY cocoon swing
To install a swing on the balcony, a wicker cocoon chair would be a good solution. It is not necessary to adhere to generally known forms. The main thing is creativity, imagination, the desire to do it yourself. So, here is a list of necessary materials:
- Metal ring with a cross section of 35mm and a diameter of 1.2 meters. It will be needed for the back.
- Another ring with the same cross-section, but with a diameter of 0.8 meters for the seat.
- Strong thread. Color to choose from. The length of the thread is 10 meters.
- Rope.
- Strong ropes for connecting hoops.
These are only approximate dimensions of the required materials. During the manufacturing process, dimensions may change based on dimensions.
Next is the step-by-step process of making the chair itself.
- The first step is braiding the seat hoop. It is important to remember that to braid 1 meter of hoop pipe you will need 4 meters of thread. The braid should be kept straight, thread to thread. Each meter of thread must be completed with a knot, having previously tensioned the entire thread. The braid should be tight and even.
- Next you need to weave the seat mesh. The mesh is woven using a double thread. It is necessary to start weaving not from a knot, but from a loop. Having completed weaving one section, secure the thread with a knot. There is no need to be afraid of deformation of the hoop from the tight tension of the threads. After weaving and securing all the threads, the hoop straightens itself. There is no need to trim the remaining threads. They can serve as fringe.
- The third step will be to collect the two hoops together. Having connected both hoops along one of the edges, we intertwine them together with a strong thread or rope. On the other hand, 2 rods are placed. They will separate the seat and backrest in height. The size of the rods must be taken based on the selected height of the structure.
- The next step is weaving the back of the chair. You can weave according to the example of the seat or by choosing other methods. The ends of the threads are also fastened with a knot, and the remaining threads can be woven into tassels.
- The last stage is attaching the slings. Two slings are attached to the front of the seat. The distance between them should be selected based on the size of family members. In parallel, we attach 2 more slings to them, but to the back.
- Next, we attach the chair to the ceiling. Here you should choose both the mount itself and the location. On the balcony, it is more convenient to first secure the intermediate beam between the walls, and then attach the chair itself to it.
Frame
Based on the presence of a frame, the following types are distinguished:
- Frameless. It can be called differently - a hammock chair. Their peculiarity is that they perfectly match the shape of the body. They are suitable only for those people who do not have problems with the musculoskeletal system and back pain.
- Frame. They are distinguished by the presence of a durable frame. Pillows are always included with frame chairs. This helps create a state of comfort and coziness.
Form
According to their shape, chairs are divided into a number of models:
- Cocoon. This form has gained high popularity among adults. It is this chair that is comfortable to be in because of its size and internal space. All this contributes to relaxation and rest. It has a hook for fastening.
- Egg chair or ball. Mounts exclusively in a vertical position. It has a depth ranging from 50 to 85 centimeters. Only 1 person can fit in this ball.
- A drop. Ideal option for children. Its shape is somewhat similar to an improvised hut for children's fun. If your child likes to play, then you can play this option with a whole castle.
Egg/ball
A hanging chair for a balcony in the form of a part of a ball looks very original. Most often it is half a ball or egg, or even a little more. When compared to a regular ball chair, it has a greater seat depth, which reaches 70–85 cm. While the standard model has 50–60 cm. It must be borne in mind that a ball chair will require more space, this must be taken into account. It can be mounted on the ceiling, a support stand or a rod that is fixed to the wall.
The egg chair has a more elongated shape. This model has a high back, so tall people feel great in this chair. An egg-shaped chair takes up less space because its seat depth is 60 cm.
Size
Hanging chairs also come in different sizes. It all depends on the chosen model and its design. Basically, hanging chairs have a round shape with a diameter of up to 140 centimeters and a depth of up to 50 centimeters. Those chairs that resemble the shape of a ball can have a depth of up to 80 centimeters.
If we consider the chairs on the counter, they will be distinguished by their massiveness. The height of the stand is approximately 1.5-2 meters. Basically, all chairs are designed to accommodate 1 person, but if you look carefully, you can also find double options. This is most often used in rooms where two children live.
