A great variety of patterns are knitted using knitting needles. And in combination with the enterlac technique, unique knitted fabrics with an expressive texture are obtained. In this style, the ornament consists of weaving clear shapes - squares, rhombuses, triangles and stripes.

The enterlac technique with knitting needles is suitable for both plain and multi-colored knitting. The usual interweaving of squares of identical threads creates a full-fledged pattern in the form of a diagonal chocolate bar. It does not involve breaking the threads during the knitting process. If necessary, the part can be unraveled and bandaged.
But enterlac made from yarn of different colors looks more impressive and brighter.
Due to the contrast created, the texture of the enterlac fabric is clearer and more convex and resembles a wicker basket. It can consist of several colors, creating a rich contrasting or rainbow pattern. It is also possible to randomly alternate colors, without maintaining symmetry, as well as using melange yarn. Then a motley pattern is superimposed on the resulting texture of the canvas.
The enterlac knitting technique allows you to experiment not only with the color of the yarn. To add individuality, it is combined with various types of knitting. Most often used:
- facial surface;
- garter stitch;
- pearl knitting
Sometimes, for additional decoration, enterlak is decorated with knitting needles with knitted braids and leaves. The fabric is knitted diagonally, in vertical and horizontal directions. Depending on the pattern repeat, a small braided pattern or a braided pattern made from large wide stripes is selected.
You can knit absolutely any shape using the enterlac technique: hats, scarves, socks, warm jackets and vests, stylish bags and various interior decor items.
Have you already mastered traditional knitting methods and are ready to learn something new? Then a selection of products and items knitted using the enterlac technique with knitting needles will be useful to you. They are provided with a detailed description of technological techniques. Diagrams and photographs will help to visually represent the knitting processes and sequence of actions.
What is enterlac knitting?
"Enterlak" is an interesting and unusual knitting technique. With its help you can knit a beautiful fabric that seems to be woven from colored stripes. This technique is easy to master; the main thing is to remember a few knitting rules.
The origin of the name of this technique is from the English entrelac; accordingly, in Russian it is correctly called entrelac. But the word enterlak is used much more often on the Russian-language Internet. We will also use this particular form of writing.
If you know how to crochet or knit, you can easily master a new knitting technique. Europe has long loved things made in this way, but our needlewomen have already learned how to knit an unusual pattern. By knitting several items, you will demonstrate your original style.
Enterlac is a pattern that consists of stripes of different widths.
Most often, needlewomen cast on 10 stitches. The pattern is knitted in a continuous fabric, the rows of which first lie in one direction, then in the other.
The braid can be knitted with threads of the same color, then they do not have to be torn off. To get a more interesting collage, you should use different colors of thread either in each row or through the desired number of rows. See what kind of hat you can make!
Here is another model of a delicately colored cap for spring.
An extraordinary rainbow of colors decorated the socks. These products are knitted with knitting needles with a set of loops in the amount of 5.
If you prefer to crochet, the products will turn out more airy and voluminous. Choose yarn with mohair to treat yourself to a cozy soft jacket or sweater.
Features of the enterlac technique
Similar to things sewn from individual scraps of material, knitted fabric is actually made with a whole thread, without breaks on each new square. The rows move sequentially, but the knitting pattern turns first in one direction and then in the opposite direction.
A fabric made from yarn of the same color is knitted without breaks, but when two or more colors alternate, each subsequent row of squares will begin with a new piece of thread of a different tone.
Thus, a relief pattern of the canvas is obtained, similar to intertwined multi-colored ribbons or birch bark baskets.
Knitting enterlak with knitting needles for beginners
At first glance, it seems very difficult, but once you figure it out, the idea of knitting will captivate you.
Enterlac knitting pattern
Next, look at the description of fashion technology.
Where to begin
- We start knitting with triangles. We cast on 18 loops for 3 triangles of 6 loops.
- Then we knit in stockinette stitch, gradually adding 1 stitch in each row, starting with 2 knit stitches.
- Then unfold the yarn and knit 2 purl stitches. In the next row, hook 1 stitch from the set, knit in one direction and the other.
- This way you will knit 6 stitches and return to the base of the new triangle.
- It also starts with 2 sts. Leave the knitted triangle loops unknitted.
- Complete all 3 triangles, starting to knit the fabric.
- Knitting the next rows begins from the side sides of the triangles and the central ones - a square shape.
And we knit further...
- To form a neat fabric, one edge loop is knitted, which separates the squares from each other. This is the main point of the basics of the enterlac technique.
- The side triangle is knitted from turning parts: 2 purl parts - turn; 3 knits - turn. Then the edge is removed, a yarn over is made and 2 loops are knitted together. There are three in total.
- Continue the process until you get six.
- The square in the center is knitted from loops that were cast along the edge of the initial triangle, located at the bottom from the bottom to the top.
- Knit together 1 stitch of the second triangle until you have used each of them and have a new square of 5 stitches. Do not touch the loops of the side triangle.
- Knit the fabric of the size you need.
The final line consists of lateral and trailing triangles. Knit the side fragment according to the pattern, but in the final row, which is directed towards the center of the fabric, close all the loops, knitting 2 one after another.
After this, cast on another 6 along the wall of the square that is at the base and knit as described above. But the final two in the last row must also be closed.
Mastering knitting techniques for beginners
To master the initial stage on the path to mastery, you need to be patient and master the techniques of knitting, starting needlework with the simplest samples.
- If a beginner already knows how to knit knit and purl stitches, then it will be easier to perform not the most difficult of techniques - enterlac.
- The right side of the knitting consists of even squares that adjoin each other's sides at an angle of 45 degrees.
- In this case, all geometric shapes are connected by facial loops, have the same size, but alternate in colors, of which there can be 2 or more.
To master the technique, it is better to start with a simple square or rectangle, which can be used as an oven mitt or a small mat for a stool.

How to knit a fashionable snood? Very simple, just like knitting in regular stitch. Snood has neither beginning nor end, so knitting will not be difficult.
Be sure to tie a double snood to keep warm!
Getting the triangles of the first row
To obtain the first triangle, you need to knit the first knit stitch, then turn the knitting needle with the beginning of the fabric and knit the same loop purl.
- Then return the work to its original position and knit 2 knit stitches, doing the same with them from the wrong side.
- Turning the knitting needle again, add another knit stitch, and having knitted all 3 from the wrong side, return for the 4th knit stitch.
- Since the repeat of this pattern is taken to be 10 loops, a triangle will be obtained when they are knitted alternately.
Leaving the first resulting triangle on the knitting needle in your right hand, you can begin knitting the second similar figure, in the given sequence. The row will end when all tens of loops that make up the bases of the triangles are knitted in it.

Tunisian enterlac is crocheted. The result is very beautiful things that will give their owner a unique charm.
Master Class
- Cast on 13 air loops (12 stitches are square loops, and 13 are corner stitches), insert the hook one by one into 8 stitches of the chain, you should get 8 loops on the hook.
- Turn the knitting over, grab the working thread, knit all the loops on the hook, two at a time, to the end of the row.
- Cast on a new row of the square by inserting the hook behind the vertical jumpers that appear in front of each loop of the 1st row, grab the working thread and pull the loops onto the hook. At the same time, pull 6 p. from the loops of the 1st row, and the 7th from the loop of the chain. Knit the second reverse row like the 1st.
- We knit the next 4 rows in the same way, that is, we pull out 6 loops from the previous row, and the 7th from the loops of the original chain, then we knit the row in the opposite direction, 2 stitches each.
- The square consists of 7 rows. We knit the final 7th row like this: insert the hook immediately behind the jumper and half-loop, grabbing the thread and knitting a connecting post. We knit this way to the end of the row 7 times, fasten and cut the thread.
Knitting a small rug
To knit a dense and voluminous item, use thick yarn, and the knitting will consist of wide strips of different colors intertwined in a pattern. For experience and familiarity with the technique, you should start with the simplest shape, which is a square or rectangular rug.
Having selected the correct number of knitting needles for the yarn, you can begin to work.
- First, you need to cast on the number of loops, which is divisible by 10 without a remainder, since in this knitting technique there are no 2 edge stitches.
- The first row is performed with facial loops, but not immediately, but as triangles are knitted, which will set the direction for the entire pattern.
Knitting garments
Having studied the procedure for knitting intersecting squares on a straight fabric, you can start working on various stylish clothes. Using the enterlak method, hats, dresses, sweaters, snoods, leg warmers and even socks are knitted on knitting needles.
It is much easier to knit voluminous items on circular knitting needles, with which you can immediately start working with a square of one color, which is supplemented with new elements to the top, and continue it without the outer triangles, since there are no edges in knitting in the round.
What does entrelak and its basics look like?
An intertwined ornament knitted in the “entrelak” style is a self-sufficient color pattern that has a decorative function. By choosing a harmonious combination of yarn, you will get a unique product with a beautiful texture. The resulting knitting pattern consists of squares, diamonds or stripes. It resembles basket weaving.
In addition to contrasting yarn, plain threads are also used for work. When knitting entrelak, it becomes possible to place the patches perpendicularly relative to each other. Such bright knitted products will appeal to many and will definitely attract admiring glances.
Entrelak can be knitted either using knitting needles or using a crochet hook. This pattern is used as a basis for knitting a wallet, dress, scarf, blanket and many other products and accessories. This technology looks original both in small products with small details and in larger works.
At first glance, you might think that reproducing such an ornament would be quite difficult to repeat. In this case, you should study a visual master class for beginners with photos and videos. At the first stage, you will need to learn how to knit stocking fabric. In addition, it is worth studying issues related to rotary knitting (creating the fabric diagonally). It is this small list that will allow you to quickly master entrelak.
If you decide to take up this technique, at first use old yarn. Since during the first attempts to repeat an intricate pattern, craftswomen often make mistakes. It is possible to correct these errors, but due to the fact that the yarn will unravel from time to time and then knit again, the finished product will lose its visual appeal.
Ideas for using the Enterlac pattern
Entrelak gives a very interesting surface structure; if knitted in small squares, it is somewhat reminiscent of a chocolate bar. Entrelak allows you to work with color, shape and different types of yarn in one fabric. In addition, it allows you to knit things without seams - not only a snood pipe, but also, for example, a sweater.
And this is what the reverse side looks like, which is not inferior in beauty to the front side.

I learned to knit various items on knitting needles back in my university years, when I had a lot of free time, but I really wanted to be fashionable. We often redrew or rewrote knitting patterns, since we couldn’t afford to subscribe to a magazine. My friends and I swapped not only patterns, but also leftover yarn. One day I came across a “basket” pattern in a needlework newspaper. Everything was described in detail there, so I decided to try to knit it. The “trick” of this pattern was that it was possible to combine several types of squares and triangles in a single canvas. In this case, it was possible to use various leftover threads. Nowadays this technique is called enterlac. I didn’t manage to knit using this pattern the first time, since each element of the fabric required a separate pattern. I mean the outermost and lateral figures in the canvas. When I completely figured out what was going on, I decided to knit a knitted pillowcase for a small pillow using this technology. It turned out nice. I chose two types of threads - red and black. Now this pillow still serves us in everyday life at the dacha. The main thing is not to give up and learn new knitting techniques.

I consider Enterlak one of the most difficult knitting techniques, especially if a sweater is knitted using this technique. I felt this from my own experience. I had to sit for a couple of evenings to fully calculate the required number of loops for individual elements of the sweater. As a result, I succeeded, of course, I could not do without Internet help. I had to ask around and find out something new, since I haven’t thought about knitting for more than two years. But the girls on the forums explained and explained everything to me. We, one might say, worked together to calculate the loops for the back, sleeves, etc. The most difficult thing was at the beginning, when you just start making the initial rows and alternating triangles with squares. I have an adult daughter, so she really liked this sweater, especially since she follows fashion trends in fashion. I ordered the same one for myself, all that remains is to decide on the color scheme. After looking through the Internet, we realized that now fashion has come to more pastel and natural colors, so we are thinking of choosing coffee, pink and white. I think that for a young girl, this color scheme will be just what she needs.

Last year I became a grandmother. Therefore, I tried my best to please my daughter-in-law during pregnancy. My granddaughter knitted various warm things for her future. I managed to knit the envelope especially beautifully. I knitted it from thick white and blue threads. I decided to choose not a simple pattern, but the currently popular enterlac. I looked for similar schemes on the Internet and found them. The result was a very soft and warm envelope. In the first months after birth, we even took my granddaughter out for walks in a stroller, swaddling him in this envelope. I knitted a delicate and snow-white hat to the envelope. Now I have to finish knitting the hat, as my granddaughters are growing. My daughter-in-law really liked this gift, especially since I know that the prices for such products are very high on the market. By the way, it is not yet known what quality of yarn is chosen by unscrupulous manufacturers. It turns out that we not only saved money, but also took care of the baby’s health. Moreover, many modern threads are colored with harmful dyes. I selected the most natural wool yarn that would not cause discomfort when touching the child’s body. Simply put, it should not have been “prickly”, since the child’s skin is very delicate.
