Interior - interior space: design styles, classification and features

Interior (from the Latin interior - “inner world”) is the internal space of a building or a separate room with elements of the surrounding environment. Interior is also called the artistic and architectural design of rooms or halls, created for a comfortable human stay.

The interior consists of two main parts: building structures (floor, walls and ceiling) and filling items (furniture and decor). The choice of finishing materials directly depends on the size and type of room, as well as the personal preferences of the owner of the apartment (private home, commercial building).

How to choose decor

We have looked at the main decorative elements in the interior, and now we will look at the general rules for purchasing home decorations.

  • Consider the style of the space. This is the main rule that will help create a balanced design. To better understand whether an item is suitable or not, look at photos of professional interiors (this develops observation) or create collages with decor against the background of your apartment.
  • Take your time with the purchase. Even if you are now at the final stage of renovation, do not rush to storm home decor stores. Give yourself time to live in the “bare” interior and understand what should be in what places.
  • Choose a “decorative minimum” without which the apartment looks completely empty and in which you are confident. It may include curtains, several pillows, a couple of posters and a vase. It will be easier to choose decorations later because you know what to layer them with.
  • Don't buy too much. An abundance of decorations creates a visual mess, and over time will make you want to hide some of it in boxes. We will have to resolve the issue of storing all these little things.
  • Don't chase too popular items from the mass market. It is possible and even necessary to buy home decorations from budget brands, but avoid overly replicated models - the whole Instagram is full of them, and your home will not get individuality.
  • Collect 2-3 small sets of seasonal themed decor. For example, winter-New Year (in white, red, green colors), spring-summer (lighter, lighter, brighter) and autumn (with pleasant textures and deep shades).

1.Introduction. Tasks.

In today's lesson we will continue to study the topic of Environment Design. It is one of the four types of design along with industrial, graphic and human image design.

In the last lesson, we talked about the role of architectural design in shaping the urban environment and you created sketches of layouts of pedestrian zones in the city.

Today we turn to design as a means of creating the spatial and material environment of the interior. The result of the work should be a design - an interior project for one of the public places in a certain style.

  1. During the classes.

2.1. Definition of design.

Design (from the English design - to project, draw, conceive, as well as project, plan, drawing) - the activity of designing the aesthetic properties of industrial products (“artistic design”), as well as the result of this activity (for example, in such phrases as “ car design"

2.2. Definition of the interior.

Interior (fr. intérieur <lat. interior - internal, antonym exterior) - architecturally and artistically designed internal space of a building, providing a person with aesthetic perception and favorable living conditions; the internal space of a building or a separate room, the architectural design of which is determined by its functional purpose.

2.3. Requirements for the interior :

  • functional - each room serves its purpose. Rational layout of rooms and conveniently arranged furniture make housing more comfortable.

hygienic - sound insulation, air exchange, heat-protective qualities, operation of sanitary and hygienic equipment, etc. •

aesthetic - harmony of things and space, their integrity and consistency

2.4. Interior composition.

Interior composition is the special arrangement and relationship of its components: furniture, lamps, household equipment

2.5. Functional areas.

Functional zones are a separate area of the room where certain life processes take place: sleep, personal hygiene, nutrition, training, rest.

ZONING is the division of space into separate zones

2.6. Color in the interior.

  • Wall decoration should be combined with the color of furniture, curtains and correspond to the purpose of the premises. For example, for bedrooms it is recommended to choose calm colors, since variegation is irritating. A color that is too dark is also not suitable - the room seems gloomy.
  • In rooms with north-facing windows, cream, orange-pink, yellow, golden, and light green tones look good. Cool tones - bluish-green, bluish-gray, greenish-gray - are good for rooms with windows facing south.

2.7. Interior drawing.

Interior drawing is based on the laws of perspective depiction of simple geometric volumes, primarily the cube and similar rectangular shapes. Any interior, no matter how complex in configuration, is always close to these volumes, since the vast majority of rooms are rectangular in plan. The floor, ceiling, walls are the planes of a cube or parallelepiped delimiting a closed space. The rounded interior can be mistaken for a cylinder or sphere. The practical ability to depict geometric shapes in perspective will greatly help in correctly depicting interiors both from life and from imagination.

Any image begins with defining the horizon line • In the interior of a room, it is usually depicted at the eye level of a standing person (about 1.5 m from the floor), i.e. approximately in the middle of the image (depending on the height of the ceilings).

The internal structure of the interior space has its own characteristic features. First of all, this is a closed internal space, which includes various spatial plans and lighting sources that create a special light characteristic of this space, as well as objects that make up the interior of different colors and textures. All this once again confirms the specifics and features of the interior design as an architectural object. At the same time, due to the presence of various objects that distract perception, it is much more difficult to see the geometry of a closed space (the contours of the floor, ceiling, walls).

In interior drawing, the method of linear-constructive image construction and knowledge of the laws of perspective are of particular importance. The linear-constructive method of depiction and linear perspective allow you to clearly follow the progress of constructing the image of objects in the drawing. Drawing an interior is essentially no different from drawing object forms; it also requires a certain amount of knowledge and skills necessary in the art of drawing.

And one more important circumstance. Each house is a personal project. It should reflect the status of the owner and emphasize his individuality. Things selected taking into account the character and habits of its inhabitants are the highest aerobatics in the art of design. If the family likes to gather around the TV in the evening, there should be a large number of pillows. If household members are passionate about reading printed books, the house should have interesting shelves and unusual book holders. When a housewife is proud of fresh flowers grown with her own hands, she should have a single set of vases and stands. The collector must have an exhibition space. There is no need to save on the design of such trifles.

Home interior details from scratch: design and space planning

When decorating your interior, you should draw up a clear plan of what you want to achieve. You need to carefully consider the functions of each room and determine your requirements. If you have enough space, it is worth dividing the house into two zones:

  1. private;
  2. public

When each family member has their own four corners in which to feel at home, it will be easier to create and take care of a common space.

Entrance area

Guests are most often greeted in the entryway or hallway, so you should ensure proper lighting and adequate space in these areas. The entrance area to the apartment must be clean and tidy. Limit the amount of furniture to avoid the appearance of clutter and overload. A closet and/or clothes hanger and a shoe cabinet are enough.

If you have a small hall, you can make the apartment more spacious from the entrance. Two large mirrors hanging opposite each other or two identical lamps reflecting soft light will make the space feel more spacious and welcoming. A good idea when arranging the entrance area is also to use the second floor, that is, the stairs. This will be a stylistic boundary and will clearly separate the area from the rest of the house.

Important interior details - eliminating unnecessary equipment

There is a reason for wanting to create spacious space in your home - more space is associated with prestige, wealth and success. Just look at the high ceilings in pre-war apartment buildings. Of course, not everyone can afford a large area, so it is worth resorting to several proven methods of optical expansion of houses and apartments. The simplest of them would be to eliminate unnecessary equipment or replace it with smaller equipment. Although bulky furniture is roomy, it dominates too easily and comfort suffers.

Decor that can become a bright accent

What specific products for home interiors are best to purchase largely depends on the size of the rooms and the selected color scheme of the finish. Experts advise carefully reading the compiled list and dividing the entire decor into two large groups: stationary (the one that will be used to decorate walls, shelves, consoles, chests of drawers) and thematic. The last group includes accessories that will have to be used temporarily to create a certain atmosphere (New Year's Eve, romantic evening, dinner party, meeting with a business partner). It will be easier.

The process of filling space can be compared to painting an artistic painting. You need to start creating it by marking the canvas and designating key elements. The accessories used must be proportionate to the size of the room: large items cannot be used in a small room.

If you want to visually increase the area of the room, the number of small parts should be reduced to a minimum. In such a situation, you need to decorate the house with modest decor (only two or three items), but it must have an unusual shape or texture. Experts recommend placing the elements used at a considerable distance from each other. You can pick up pillows for the sofa, one unusually shaped vase, put a lamp on the coffee table - this will be quite enough.

Individuality of space

There is no need to make an exact copy of a picture that you saw somewhere in your home. This design option can certainly be quite stylish. However, it will look incredibly like a hotel room. In addition, it will be difficult to maintain order in a room where there are not only your items.

As already mentioned, if you have imagination, you can decorate the interior in a variety of ways. That is why you can safely display your favorite collections by choosing a beautiful frame and hanging family photos on the walls, and your home library can become the center of your interior.

At the same time, the most important thing is to do everything carefully, in accordance with the style and color design. It is also important to adhere to measures.

And remember, home decor accessories don't have to be incredibly expensive to sit around collecting dust. Many options for items can be used in accordance with their intended purpose. For example, this applies to dishes, decorative candles, vases, sofa cushions, writing boards and more.

Classification of interiors

Interiors can be divided according to design styles into three large groups:

  • Classical (antique, gothic, renaissance, classicism, baroque, rococo, Biedermeier, empire, art deco, modern)
  • Ethnic (African, Arabic, Japanese, Chinese, Indian, Russian, Scandinavian, French, English, American)
  • Modern (high-tech, fusion, country, grunge, minimalism, eclecticism, functionalism, pop art, loft, techno, shabby chic, kitsch, boho).

Classic types of interiors have gradually evolved throughout the existence of human civilization. Many of them have names consonant with the styles of painting, sculpture and architecture.

Ethnic styles clearly reflect the cultural traditions of a particular nation. Characteristic folk motifs are used in the decoration of the premises.

The number of modern interior styles is growing steadily every year. Designers constantly offer people innovative solutions for arranging the interior space of premises. The most successful options quickly gain popularity, and after some time become new full-fledged design styles.

Natural lighting is an important detail of a modern interior

Light is an important interior detail. Be sure to let him inside and, if possible, install large-format windows that will make the room appear larger than it actually is. However, if we do not have space for large windows, try to make the most of small ones. Leave them open during the day. Skip heavy curtains and blinds, as light, bright curtains that softly let in sunlight are much better.

Interior items in the form of animals

Today you can find such decor on sale, made of metal, wood, glass, and ceramics. Everyone can easily find something to suit their taste and show off to everyone that they follow the latest trends.

Interior details in one direction style

While personal interior preferences are very important in room design, you shouldn't forget to create the space with a cohesive, uniform aesthetic. Even if you dream of a variety of interiors, it is better not to practice stylistic juggling - stick to one style and avoid chaos.

Do you like industrial style? Paint the walls beige and brown and highlight purely functional elements such as pipes. Fans of the colonial style are advised to use dark exotic wood furniture and designs popular in the nineteenth century. Minimalism will work great in many apartments, especially smaller ones. Stick to one direction with a few bright accents added. Interiors decorated in this way can be enhanced by a piece of furniture or accessories with an appropriate accent, such as asymmetrically hung paintings, which will immediately bring a little energy.

Successful interior design combines correctly selected details. In this mix you cannot forget about moderation, harmony and balance, but also a touch of extravagance. Approach the finishing process patiently and carefully so that the interiors will captivate with their harmony and beauty.

Stone and marble

Everything that is made from this natural material or is a skillful imitation of it is in fashion. Each of us is accustomed to seeing marble countertops in the kitchen and wall decoration in the bathroom. Today, designers have taken the design of the stone as a basis and began to use it in the manufacture of decorative items. This is how marble plates, boxes, and table lamps were born. They look very impressive. Decorative elements made from the stones themselves give the home a special atmosphere.
