Shelves and racks: transforming space

Shelves and racks make our life more convenient and organized. It’s good if they themselves are beautiful designer pieces, like a three-tier shelf in the shape of a fire escape, which can also be used as a support for climbing houseplants. It's called Fire Escape Shelf.

The Helix modular shelving system from OSW design studio can transform any space. From the original elements you can assemble a cabinet of any shape, fill the entire wall with them and even decorate the ceiling.

The whole family

The “patchwork” technique is familiar, perhaps, to all women. Design studio kith&kin used it in an unusual way - making furniture. Each element of the consoles and chests of drawers was created by combining wooden geometric shapes. And even if assembling furniture is a man’s job, in this case it is impossible to do without a woman’s hand.

The Bounce frameless furniture collection from Veronica Bayer consists of three pieces. They are different in size and are a kind of hybrid of stools with upholstered furniture. The largest representative of the series is, in fact, an armchair. You immerse yourself in it as if in a nest. The springy material allows the furniture to return to its original shape when not in use. According to the designer, it is best to use items together - both from the point of view of design and comfort.

Felt ottomans from Tim Webber also look easy to make. The design of unusual furniture was created following the example of duffel bags. All items have a pleasant, homely color. Small models weigh 8 kg, poufs-tables - 20 kg. However, thanks to the rope handles, the furniture is easy to move around the room.

An uninformed person will suspect you of animal cruelty if he sees this picture: These fluffy chickens and other animals are just unusual footstools. They will be a good addition to a country house. But most of all, children will be delighted with them: they can play with such furniture and have fun jumping on it.

A hammock is a necessary thing in the country. But there is not always something or where to attach it. French designer Laurent Coriot proposed his solution - a mobile hammock that looks like a boat. This design can be placed in the garden and at home.

Agree – sitting on the steps of the stairs is very comfortable. It is no coincidence that many designers propose organizing a home library in this place. By analogy with this design, Canadian designer Geoff Ramsey developed an original place to relax. He suggested using the top “step” as a table, and the other two were equipped as seats. This development has not yet entered mass production. So you have a chance, using the idea, to make furniture that no one else has.

Designer Philippe Aduaz took up the reincarnation of old furniture, remembering an activity known to everyone from childhood - papier-mâché. His furniture collection is striking in its originality and deliberate negligence. And the most important thing is that you can make this yourself with the whole family, applying soaked paper to the frame of old chairs, lamps and other objects.

For greater effect, Philip partially polished his products.

Unusual shape coupled with simplicity

Ordinary furniture in an unusual shape should also be simple. Simplicity and conciseness are also now actively promoted by interior designers around the world.

In general, in modern interior design trends, the following main accents can be distinguished. Both in furniture and in the interior in general.

  • Simplicity, conciseness
  • Eco-friendly (all natural and organic)
  • Non-standard solution, unusual shape

What is environmental friendliness or ecodesign, read on Wikipedia

Boca Do Lobo Newton

Metal bubble table

The extraordinary Boca Do Lobo Newton table is named after Isaac Newton. Looking at the table, it seems as if the spheres and hemispheres are connected to each other only by the force of gravity.

Never before has the law of universal gravitation had such tangible outlines.

As one of the most innovative and exclusive furniture brands in the world, the Portuguese factory Boca do Lobo has always delighted its customers with emotional projects and bold designs.

The spheres and hemispheres are made of aluminum and coated with black glossy varnish. Some elements of the table are gold-plated.

Non-standard materials

First, a couple of general tips:

  • All wooden surfaces should be sanded and varnished.
  • Ready-made decor for every taste is easy to find in stores. However, in some cases additional decoration is inappropriate (for example, if the natural grain of the wood can be emphasized).

Old furniture can be transformed thanks to your ideas.
Do not rush to throw away old broken furniture. In most cases, you can breathe new life into it. And there is no need to rush with other things that have outlived their time.

Use old furniture to bring your original ideas to life.

Some interesting options for using second-hand items:

  1. Stylish chaos. With a slight movement of the hand, a mountain of broken furniture turns... into an elegant storage system. The algorithm is simple: measure, saw off what is unnecessary, combine the rest, install, starting from the bottom tier, sand, coat with a single-color varnish. Unusual, original, interesting.
  2. Sofa from an old bathtub. You don't even need to measure anything. Just cut off the excess and put on the mattress.
  3. Chairs from... magazines. The biggest difficulty is making the bases.
  4. Did you inherit the complete works of Marx, Engels and Lenin from your grandfather? So this is an almost finished sofa! True, you will have to get a little confused with installing books on the same level. You will need a lot of glue. Finishing is varnish.
  5. An original mini-table made from a flower stand and... a vinyl record.

You can implement interesting ideas yourself with a little effort.
And a few ideas for DIY furniture made from pallets, SIP panels and plastic pipes.

Pallet furniture

The fashion for furniture made from pallets was introduced by the architectural studio “MOST Architecture” from the Netherlands. In 2010, the designers were commissioned to design a temporary office in the center of Amsterdam... and did it all using only pallets.

The trend in recent years is creating furniture with your own hands from wooden pallets.

Literally everything is made from them, from stairs and tables to podiums, partitions and wall cladding.

Furniture made from pallets can be installed in the country house.

Furniture fantasies made from pallets look unusual, stylish and original. The main thing is not to forget to clean the pallets and coat them with varnish.

SIP panels in the interior

Are there any unused SIP panels left after construction? Let's put them to work and give free rein to our imagination!

Making furniture with your own hands is a fascinating, creative process that brings stunning results.

The resulting original furniture will have all the advantages of the material: environmental friendliness, good insulating properties, resistance to fungi, mold, and ultraviolet radiation.

From plastic pipes

There are no less original ideas for using plastic pipes.

You can make a shoe rack from plastic pipes.

You can use them to make an unusual coffee table (you will need organic or impact-resistant glass for the tabletop), a shelving unit (all you have to do is take care of the shelves) and even a bunk bed.

Wicker furniture

The passion for weaving can easily be satisfied by making home or garden furniture from wicker and rattan.

It is not necessary to weave small interior items and accessories. Designers have learned to create wicker furniture with foam rubber, including sofas.

It is not necessary to make armchairs or a sofa. You can limit yourself to a hammock and a canopy.

Kartell Masters

Quote chair

The Kartell Masters chair “encrypts” the silhouettes of three legendary models from famous designers of the 20th century: the Series 7 chair from Arne Jacobsen, the Tulip chair from Eero Saarinen and the Eiffel chair from Charles Eames.

The non-trivial Masters model was developed by Philippe Starck together with Eugene Quitlit, who were thus able to pay tribute to the past, intricately reflected in the present. “There is no connection between design and contemporary art. Art is absolutely self-sufficient, it is pure poetry. And the design revolves around increasing functionality and ergonomics. Design wants to be liked, art doesn’t need that ,” says Philippe Starck.

Philippe Starck always takes an ironic approach to many of his interiors and design projects, unexpectedly mixing styles.

The Kartell factory knows how to combine a high-tech approach with original design. Thanks to the founder of the factory, Italian chemical engineering specialist Giulio Castelli, plastic products came into use and continue to enjoy incredible success to this day.

AndTradition Hoof

Table with sharpened legs

In objects andTradition, manufacturing is inextricably linked with art, and functionality with form. Each item in the collection bears the imprint of the Nordic traditions and cultural heritage of Denmark.

The table with sharpened legs andTradition Hoof is one example of the creative approach of designer Samuel Wilkinson. Here's what he says about the Hoof table: “I've always loved painted wooden chairs that had natural legs at the base, so the paint didn't peel or rub off over time. Interestingly, the production of this model changes the usual production process: most furniture pieces, which have painted and unpainted parts, are first turned and then painted. In the case of Hoof, it’s the other way around—the legs are painted first and only then cut down.”

The recognizable style of the andTradition factory can be attributed to minimalism, but not a single item is left without an original detail.

Hocus Pocus: Surprising Guests

Even without any special skills, you can make a bench for a country house. The most basic one will be made from two logs and a plank. But in order to repeat a product from designer Isabella Voloz, more skill will be required. When you see the two-legged product “Leaning Bench,” doubts arise: how can it support a person without falling, but the author assures that the wooden bench is quite reliable and stable. So you can try to make something similar, and at the same time study the theory of balance and surprise your guests.

Do you master the art of tying? The ability to beautifully and securely braid objects with ropes can be useful to everyone. After all, in this way you can create furniture from almost any material, be it a haystack, a blanket folded several times, a box or a large gymnastic ball. But it doesn’t matter if you haven’t learned how to weave sea knots. The Andreu Carulla Studio company offers you a ready-made solution - a blank for making stools “TheStooler”. It is a product with four legs and clamps that secure the material used as a seat.

Wooden fantasies

The “Little Gem Side Table” collection of tables in the form of precious stones was released by the Hinterland studio. Designers have given a second life to unwanted Canadian cedar logs. “Gems” can be used as stools, tables, and home or garden decor. The tabletops of the furniture are made of polished solid materials: brass, steel, black granite and marble.

Designer Maximo Riera created the “The Millennial Console” collection of consoles from the wood of dead olive trees. Over the course of a year, the master dried the material. Then the pieces of wood, stripped of bark, were varnished and placed on fancy metal structures. The designer skillfully turned all the shortcomings of wood - numerous tunnels left by insects, roughness and veins - into advantages.

“Flex” chairs from the AK47 design studio will allow you to store various items, magazines or firewood there. But you will have to work separately on the comfort of the furniture if you want to use such chairs not in the garden, but at home. The original furniture is made of flexible sheets of hardened steel. It turned out stylish, but not soft.

Furniture found in the forest - what could be better for a summer house! We offer you another idea - a table in a rustic style, assembled from birch logs. This project used 34 logs with a diameter of 8-14 cm. You will also need: plywood for the table base, screws, wood glue, putty, wheels (if you are making mobile furniture), tools (saw, spatula, screwdriver).

A square or rectangular base is assembled from plywood. The sides are attached at some distance from the edges of the bottom of the box: on it, along the perimeter, you will glue the logs cleared of knots. Additionally, they can be strengthened with screws from the inside of the box. The top of the box is covered with a table top onto which birch blocks are glued.

At the end, the seams are rubbed down with putty, the excess is removed with a damp cloth. The finished product can be coated with clear wood varnish. Attach wheels to the bottom - and another delightful piece of furniture is ready!

Pine

It is not at all necessary to choose furniture from expensive noble species. Pine is mainly used to furnish other rooms. This material is more whimsical, but in the price category it is more accessible.

Thus, pine is well suited for bedroom interiors due to its light shades and bright, pronounced structure.

And with proper care, pine, which is capricious to temperature changes, can last for many years. Oak, for example, will look heavy for bedrooms.

Domitalia Bouchon

Bar stool-cork

The stylish Bouchon chair has a metal base and a cork seat, reminiscent of a sparkling wine cork. What an obvious, at first glance, but no less bright and original solution! The author of the object, Radice Orlandini, considers a synthesis of irony and functionality mandatory in design. Each of the pieces of furniture he created reflects the selected characteristics, combining emotionality and aesthetics.

Domitalia Bouchon combines bright gaming imagery and ergonomic wonders.

Cherry, ash

You can also pay attention to cherry and ash. The design of furniture made from this array is distinguished by a variety of structures and shades, and the main advantage is the affordable price category.

Among imported products, the predominant species are mahogany and rosewood.
