Old Soviet doors are increasingly being replaced. Although they are not too damaged and even function smoothly, they cause aesthetic damage to the room. Bar hinge: what kind of fittings is this?

The bar hinge belongs to the category of modern types of fittings used for installing doors that open in any direction. A spring mechanism mounted in the hinge allows the door to close automatically and smoothly.

The bar hinge received another name - pendulum or spring - due to the type of mechanism that allows the door to be closed. To some extent this explains the principle of the loop, but not completely.

Structurally, the bar hinge (the photo clearly illustrates this) consists of two spring mechanisms that rotate around an axis in the opposite direction to each other, thereby allowing the door to open in any direction and easily return to its original position, that is, the closed state.

Types and features

Based on the features of the device, bar fasteners on springs differ:

• practicality, they allow you to open doors in and out without using your hands;
• ergonomics, inconspicuous appearance, ease of installation;
• narrow specificity, used for installation of technical doors in special places with high traffic: in a hospital, restaurant, store, shopping center, etc.

Another advantage is their ability to provide good heat and sound insulation, as well as protect against drafts.

In addition to stainless steel, spring hinges can be made of brass, bronze, aluminum or with the addition of zinc, which determines the type of their external decoration. For example, brass door stops are most often plated with chrome to protect the surface from mechanical damage and make it more durable.

Galvanized fasteners, on the other hand, are treated with brass on top to achieve an attractive appearance: smooth, with a golden tint. The abundance of external decorative treatments, as well as color variations, allows you to choose a hinge option for any interior style or type of fabric covering.

Based on the type of adjustment, door mechanisms are divided into:

• left-sided;
• right-sided;
• universal.

Species diversity may include the ability to adjust the position and speed of closing the door leaf. Pendulum fasteners in the form of loops can be manufactured with or without bearings. • Opening direction. This has already been mentioned above.
• Dimensions. First of all, the width of the cards, which should not be greater than the thickness of the door leaf.

The loops also differ in length.

• Permissible load. It is unlikely that every canopy comes with an instruction manual, but the seller should have information about the maximum load on it.

Advice. Please note that the load is per loop. Knowing the mass of the door leaf, you can calculate the required number of canopies.

• Appearance. This is also a shape that may differ from the standard rectangular one. And a color that matches the door or other interior details. The choice is quite large: gold, chrome, brass, bronze in matte and polished versions. There are also canopies coated with powder paint in different colors.

The main feature of hinge installation is the specific design of the fittings. Installation of bar hinges requires preliminary preparation of fasteners. To do this you will need to loosen the springs. If you purchased a set of fittings in a specialized store, then a special pin suitable for this purpose is included with the hinges. After preparing the fasteners, they can be installed.

How can it be installed on the door?

The spring door hinge is installed using a mortise. The number of fasteners is selected based on the size of the door leaf and its weight. Typically use 2 loops for every 25 kg of weight.

Installation sequence of double-sided hinges:

1. At the installation sites, markings for fastening are drawn.
2. In the marked areas, make 2 mm indentations.
3. The spring retainer is removed from the fastener. It is located on the sleeve.
4. The opened loop is tried on the markings. Fixation is carried out with screws.
5. The latch is secured. To do this, perform circular movements of the key on the sleeve.

Installation is easy and no special skills are required. The swing hinge can be installed before assembling the door frame. To do this, you need to place the box on a flat surface. Then the loops are inserted. Fasteners are adjusted to eliminate cracks and various distortions. The canvas must be removed and the box mounted. After installing the box in the doorway, check for correct operation. A laser level is used for this. If everything is smooth, then at the last stage the canvas is hung.

There are doors with non-standard dimensions and large weight. In this case, it is allowed to use the overhead installation method rather than the mortise one. This option is also acceptable when using non-standard materials. For overhead installation, use 4-5 loops.

Stages of fittings installation

1. Make marks on the door frame and the end of the door where the hinge will be attached.
2. You can make recesses for the hinges (if there is such a need) using a drill. Craftsmen still recommend not to miss this moment, since without applying notches, the gap between the frame and the door structure itself can be from 1 to 12 mm, and this is already a serious error.
3. After marking, the hinges are applied to the fastening points and mounted using self-tapping screws.
4. Once you have finished installing the hinges, do not forget to adjust the spring mechanism: rotate the adjustment wheel clockwise. The adjustment is performed in the following order: first, tighten the spring on the sash attached to the frame, and then tighten the spring mechanism located on the door itself.

Once the bar hinge is adjusted, the installation of the door fasteners is complete.

As the name suggests, window hinges (another name is overhead) hinges are installed on windows, and door hinges, respectively, on doors. Let's imagine their main differences:

• Vent hinges are smaller in size and less massive. They are not suitable for holding a heavy target. Doors, due to their stronger construction, can cope with heavy loads.

Such designs make them suitable for window and balcony sashes, but not door sashes.

3. Marking on the hinge beam without taking into account the upper gap. If you do not provide a gap of 3 mm and measure 20 cm from the top of the counter, then the door will rub against the top bar and close with difficulty.
4. A too tight fit of the hinge cylinder to the door leaf leads to poor closing of the door.
5. Screwing in self-tapping screws without first drilling a hole for them. In this case, the canvas may crack and split.
6. Installing the loop and fixing it with self-tapping screws at the location of the knot. You cannot screw screws into a knot, because the wood in this place may crack. If a knot is found on the canvas, then the loop is slightly moved to a safe place.
