Unusual hemp stool. Description of the progress of work to make a stool from wood with your own hands with photos and drawings with dimensions Stool from cut wood

Interior design in eco style will probably never lose its relevance. Residents of large cities, with their frantic pace of life, often strive to create an island of calm and relaxation at home, choosing natural materials, a natural color palette and decorative elements created by nature for decoration. A special place is occupied by accessories and furniture made from stumps and tree trunks. Let's look at examples of using solid pieces of wood in the interiors of apartments of different styles.

Furniture made from stumps and solid wood cuts

Stumps are an excellent material for making stylish, inexpensive and completely unique furniture with your own hands, because in nature there are no two absolutely identical trees. Such stump furniture will fit into almost any interior, be it light classic or country, Scandinavian style or minimalism, loft or industrial. If the stump is painted in glossy or metallic shades, then even high-tech can organically accommodate such an object. A processed cut of a tree trunk or stump can become a comfortable coffee table in the living room, a bedside table in the bedroom, stools in the kitchen or a table in the bathroom. Most often in the interior, a stump is used as a cabinet or table.

How to make a table from a stump with your own hands

First, find a suitable tree stump to create a table or cabinet. This is not so difficult even if you are a purely city dweller without a dacha. Firstly, there are a lot of companies that deal with wood - logging, sawmills, and so on; you can purchase cut wood of the desired size from them. Secondly, we advise you to interview all your acquaintances and friends who have dachas or relatives in villages; they probably have supplies for firewood or uprooted stumps. And thirdly, you can take a saw, go into the nearest forest, find a fallen tree and cut it into pieces.

The stump should be dry, but not rotten. If the bark comes away from the trunk easily enough, then such a stump can be used. If you find fresh wood, you need to let it dry. Leave such a stump for a month or two in a warm and dry room.

The bark must be removed from the trunk. To do this, take a chisel or chisel and carefully, using a hammer, remove the bark.

If you plan to use the stump not just as a decorative decoration, but as a functional piece of furniture, you need to level it. Using a building level, check how level your workpiece is. If the surface of the stump is sloped, level it with a plane.

Sand the cut of the stump and the side with a sander or by hand with sandpaper.

It’s good if the stump has an interesting natural texture with knots, cracks and chips. After you have processed and sanded the entire surface of the stump, clean the cracks of small shavings and dust. To do this, you can use both plumbing tools, a cloth, and a regular vacuum cleaner.

Any stump or cut of a log is beautiful in its natural form. But you can paint the stump in any color (after a coat of primer), apply patterns with a brush or using a stencil, or, at a minimum, open it with varnish or apply a water-repellent impregnation for wood. The latter is especially true if your future table will be actively used outdoors or in a room with high humidity, for example, in a bathroom. Remember that even one coat of varnish will darken the wood a little. It is recommended to apply two or three layers of water-based varnish, and after the last layer has dried, polish with a soft abrasive fiber.

Such a table made from a stump can simply be placed on the floor. You can also use shortened legs from old tables or stools, wheels or special stands. By the way, the use of legs, firstly, will protect your floor from scratches, and secondly, will raise the stump and ensure air circulation, which is important for the long service life of such furniture.

Stools and chairs and stumps in the interior

There is practically no difference between a table and a stump stool. But it is obvious that sitting on a stump is not very comfortable. In order to make the stump a comfortable stool or footstool, you can simply put a pillow on it. You can also make soft upholstery with filler and attach it to the surface of the log. The presence of a back will make the stump chair even more comfortable. Designers and carpenters cut such a chair from a single piece of wood using a chainsaw, followed by processing. Some examples of using stumps as seats can be seen below.

Recommendations for decorating with wood cuts

  • The main condition for quality work is a well-prepared and cleaned surface. The wall plane must be leveled and treated with a primer.
  • Decide in advance exactly how you will decorate the surface. A wall with a partially covered saw cut will look good. It is not recommended to lay all the walls of the room with wooden plates, since the room will seem too small and overly cluttered.
  • Partial installation looks natural in bedrooms at the head of the bed, in living rooms near fireplaces or modern electric fireplaces, as well as in the kitchen or hallway.
  • Decorating surfaces with wood cuts is excellent for country and country houses.

Vases made from stumps and tree trunks

Vases made from stumps will be a wonderful addition to any interior. A bouquet of fresh flowers or a houseplant in a pot or vase of natural origin looks very beautiful and harmonious. Parts of the trunk of small trees are often used for vases, and the tree bark is sometimes left in such products for a more natural, earthy appearance.

To make such a vase or flowerpot from wood, find a suitable part of a dry tree trunk. Remove the bark with a chisel or leave it on.

The main task of the entire project is to make a hole in the barrel for the container. Decide what you will put in the middle - a flower pot or a glass jar. Mark a circle on the cut of the log with a diameter 3-5 mm larger than the diameter of the widest part of the container. Next, you have several options for how to make a hole in a log.

You can use a drill attachment for round holes or a hole saw for wood - it's quick and convenient, but the method is suitable for shallow holes, for small jars or candles.

The second method is more labor-intensive. Drill many holes around the circumference with a drill, and then use a chisel and hammer to knock out the core. The hole will not be perfectly round and even, but it will be of any size and depth that you wish.

Wood can be painted, coated with aqua varnish or water-repellent impregnation. If you use a stump as a candlestick, be extremely careful with fire.

Several options for candlesticks and vases made from a tree trunk are below.

Tables and chairs

Untreated wood is an almost ready-made form for creating creative furniture. At the beginning of work, it is advisable to thoroughly dry the wood and carefully process it. Then the products will last you much longer

The simplest option for such fittings is stumps and decks of different sizes. Cut down the stump with an even cut - and the table and chairs are completely ready to perform their direct functions!

The excessive asceticism of hemp stools and benches can be smoothed out by backrests, comfortable seats or soft pillows

In the following photos we will admire the designer handmade collection

Attach the tabletop to a piece of large driftwood and your rustic design will be flawless

For stability, make neat, even cuts on the original stand

If you manage to get a wide log - make a tabletop for a summer kitchen or a surface for a bar counter. Small branches are perfect as components for chairs. Use larger ones for the legs, connecting them into one

Pots made of rotten stumps

Nature itself will give you interesting ideas. Moss and vegetation on the stumps refresh the old tree. Its rotten center inside is an excellent option for a flowerpot. All that remains is to plant your favorite plants, but only in a pot to avoid destruction of the wood

Massive branches with graceful curves give us an idea for fencing

Strength and reliability, together with natural beauty, make wood an ideal environmentally friendly base for paving. The cuts should be smooth, and it is not at all necessary to process them, then the rough surface will not be slippery during rain

Lamps made from stumps

Stumps in the interior can serve as extraordinary lamps. Duncan Meerding, a visually impaired designer and artist from Australia, creates unique lighting systems from wood cuts. LED lamps are placed inside a wooden block with through cracks, emitting warm light. Such lamps made from stumps can simultaneously serve as tables, cabinets, and stools. It is especially important to use such a multifunctional piece of furniture in the bedroom, where dim lighting will act as a night light.

Hi all. This time I suggest you work with wood. And we will make an unusual massive stool. Its unusualness lies in the fact that the stool is made of hemp and is completely monolithic. To give the product a more interesting look, the author made it look like it was twisted. Such furniture looks beautiful and is almost eternal. The author used ash as wood; this wood is very strong and has a beautiful pattern. To make it, you will need a fairly small set of tools, and we have only one material - stump, not counting materials for finishing (oil, epoxy, and so on). So, let's take a closer look at how to make such a stool!

Materials and tools used

List of materials:

- ash stump; - wood oil; - epoxy glue and dye; - ready-made rubber legs or materials for their manufacture.

List of tools:

- chainsaw or electric; — grinder (petal attachments, wood disc with three teeth and Velcro for sanding); — planing machine; - hammer; - measuring instrument and more.

Stool making process:

Step one. Selecting the source material

The author used ash as the source material.
This wood is dense, strong and has a beautiful pattern. It is important to understand that the wood must be dry, otherwise it will still crack after applying the oil, and the oil will not be absorbed. The author's wood took 18 months to dry in the open air. Step two.
Let's start cutting Next, we need to make a square from the hemp.
Here the author decided to use a chainsaw; this can be done manually, but it will take a lot of time and effort. When everything is done, we go over the planes with a planer to remove rough irregularities. Step three.
Cutting out the “screw” part Next, we will need a pencil and a ruler.
We mark on the material where the excess needs to be cut off to create the effect of a twisted tree. Well, then you can start cutting. The author again performed the main work using a chainsaw. The main thing here is not to rush and not to cut off too much, otherwise you can ruin everything. Step four.
We cut with a grinder. Next, we can proceed to finer processing, here we will need a grinder.
With its help we will form the main profile of the stool. For the work, the author used a metal disc with three teeth for cutting wood. It is safe when compared with circular discs, which many people install on angle grinders. Carefully remove excess material from the marked area. How exactly to do this is up to everyone to decide for themselves; this is a creative process. We create a profile to suit your taste. The result is an almost finished product, and you can start sanding. Step five.
Rough sanding You can start rough sanding to remove any imperfections left from cutting.
Here we need a petal attachment for an angle grinder. The grain size will be coarse, since you will need to remove bumps, smooth out depressions, and so on. Step six.
Working with epoxy Next, we arm ourselves with epoxy and begin to eliminate defects.
It can be used to fill cracks, holes, strengthen rotten areas, and so on. You can be creative and add any dye you like to the epoxy. Keep in mind that the resin can be quite fluid, and this will be absorbed into the wood. But if you use quick-drying epoxy, you may not have time to get air bubbles out of it. In order for the air to escape, the epoxy can be heated with a hairdryer after pouring. After all this we leave the epoxy to dry, we will need to sand it later. Step seven Finish sanding
When the epoxy is completely dry, start sanding the entire product.
Here we need a grinder with disc attachments made of sandpaper. The author used 120 grit sandpaper. In general, the finer the abrasive at the final stage of processing, the more beautiful the product will be and the less oil will be needed for coating. Step eight.
We cover it with oil or varnish In general, ideally, wood is covered with oil; this is the best coating. The oil highlights the natural look of the wood well and also protects it well from moisture. But the author decided to use a water-based varnish because he did not have the patience to wait for the oil to dry. For the best effect, you need to apply several layers and lightly sand before each new layer.

An interesting and rather unusual trend - the use of tree stumps in interior design - appeared just a couple of years ago. It was rapidly gaining momentum, and today tree stumps are no longer just a current trend, but a sign of style and taste.

Today, stumps are an incredibly popular, and at the same time inexpensive and environmentally friendly material.

Tree stumps are often used as furniture for the home, not only helping to update the space, but also evoking thoughts about our place in nature. As a rule, the result exceeds all expectations and turns out to be inexpensive, beautiful and unique.

Wood cuts as finishing material for house walls

Wall surfaces are the most convenient and extensive area for decorating a room. Here you can realize the most daring and creative ideas in room decoration. This time we will use wooden slices as a decorative element. They are smooth transverse layers of a tree trunk. Each layer has its own original and unique pattern, which is obtained from the growth rings of wood. Well, are you ready to get to work? First, let's find out how to make wood cuts for the interior. The process is extremely simple and even a beginner can handle it. Often, a transverse cut (also called an end cut) of a log takes part in the design.

  1. We cut tree trunks into plates of the thickness we need. Their diameter can be different - this way the decorated surface will look even more beautiful.
  2. We clean the cut from sawdust and shavings, you can also remove the bark.
  3. We treat the layers with stain or special paint.
  4. We apply an adhesive solution to each cut and place it on the wall.
  5. You can lay out the wall plane partially or completely with cuts.
  6. We wait for the glue to set and finally cover the surface of the glued sections with varnish.

DIY stump table

Especially often, stumps are used in interiors as tables, bedside tables, coffee tables, and also as bathroom furniture.

The stump is natural. The easiest way is to use the stump in its original form as a table, just sand it a little so as not to get a splinter.

Stump painted

Stump painted with gold paint (from a can)

The stump looks great in its natural form, but you can give it even more originality by painting it in any color, applying patterns with a brush or using a stencil.

For the bathroom

If you treat the stump with water-repellent impregnation, it will also be suitable for the bathroom

A stump for a bathroom will become a very original decor. It can be used as a table, placing bath accessories on it near the bathroom, or candles when you want to have a relaxing evening.

Table with glass

The simplest use for a stump is to make a coffee table out of it. A glass top can be added on top for a more elegant look. The stump can also be placed on legs or wheels, resulting in a very convenient mobile table.

An ordinary tree stump will look great as a bedside table. You can decorate it at your own discretion.

You will need: a dry stump, a chainsaw, an axe, a piece of polystyrene foam, a ruler, an antiseptic, paint, soil, sand, flowers (which ones are best to use are described in the master class in paragraph 7).

Master Class

  1. Trim the bottom edge with a chainsaw to create a level base.
  2. Draw contours on the surface of the stump, retreating at least 5 cm.
  3. Make 10-20 cm indentations in the stump using a chainsaw and an axe.
  4. Treat the inner walls of the stump with an antiseptic or paint it. This way the stump will last longer.
  5. Using a chainsaw, drill a hole for drainage to prevent moisture from accumulating, then insert a piece of foam.
  6. Mix store-bought soil with garden soil and add sand, then pour it into the stump.
  7. Plant flowers. Flowers with a small root system are best suited, such as: tulips, begonia, petunia, geranium, daffodils, oxalis, purslane, pansies, primroses, marigolds...
  8. Water your flowers regularly and take care of your flower bed.

Stumps as chairs

Stumps make excellent stools. You can put small pillows on top of them to make it softer to sit on. Hemp can also be used as decorative chairs, which will be an excellent addition to the interior. The presence of a back will make the stump chair even more comfortable.

If you go to a workshop, you can make an original designer chair or bench.

How to treat a stump for the interior

To create a table or cabinet, you need to find a suitable stump and process it correctly. The bark can be removed with a chisel, or you can leave it on.

If the future table is intended for the bathroom, you need to apply a water-repellent impregnation.

Advantages of decorating the interior with wood cuts

Wood cuts surprise at the same time with their visual appeal and the complexity of their creation from a technical point of view.

Now let’s see what advantages wood finishing has:

  • Durability. If the wood can be properly processed and is protected from moisture and various mechanical damage, then it will last quite a long time. If it is a whole wooden wall or floor, then you can save on annual repairs.
  • Thermal insulation. Firewood is a source of heat not only in a fire. The raw material has the ability to maintain temperature, so for a cold concrete apartment this is the best type of insulation, albeit partial. In winter, such an insulated floor will warm any feet.

Decorative tree from branches
Uniqueness. You can, of course, hang wallpaper with images of wood cuts, or lay laminate flooring, but in such pictures a pattern is used - a simple repetition of one module. Natural finishing with saw cuts is a composition where each element is unique. The pattern on the saw cut and its shape are unique.

Other methods of using stumps in the interior

Small stumps can be used as a flower stand, so your home greenhouse will look very aesthetically pleasing.

Vases made from stumps will be a wonderful addition to any interior. Moreover, the tree bark can be left for a more natural, natural appearance.

Hemp can even be used as unusual lighting fixtures. Inside the stump you need to place LED lamps that emit warm light.

You can decorate the wall with sections by sawing stumps into many rings. You can use saw cuts to decorate the entire wall, or a fragment of it, and the result will be a unique panel. To do this, the saw cuts are simply attached to a clean, flat surface using wood glue.

Everyone knows the expression: “simple as a stool.” There is a fair amount of truth in it. This piece of furniture in its classic design is laconic and strict.

It is difficult to do without a stool in the kitchen and workshop, in the garage and in the bathhouse. It is needed wherever cramped conditions do not allow for larger furniture to be placed. For a home craftsman, making such a thing is the best way to gain practical skills in carpentry.

In this article we will introduce you to the varieties of wooden stools and tell you about the features of making them yourself. We hope that after this you will be able to confidently get to work and please your family with this useful piece of furniture.

Before you make a stool with your own hands, you should learn more about what carpentry masters in this area have come up with. First, let's study the sketch of a simple product and remember the names of the main parts. This will help us speak the same language using common terms.

So, a classic stool consists of a seat and four legs. The bars of the upper belt serve as a support for the seat and are called tsarg. The lower stiffening belt connecting the legs also consists of four bars called pro-legs. Through experience, the craftsmen established the optimal dimensions: height 50 cm, seat width 45 cm.

Idea #5 – garden sculptures

Anyone can create garden figurines from stumps, but real artists end up with wonderful works of art that amaze with their realism. If you are driven by the desire to simply decorate your area, then you can create a simple image that does not require special skills.

Of course, this magnificent deer calling out in the spring forest was skillfully carved from an ordinary stump by a high-level professional

Making a simple figurine from a stump is not at all difficult. Those who made snowmen in childhood can apply their accumulated experience in this case. The role of hands will be played by twigs, instead of the nose and mouth we will attach twigs, Eyes can be made from brown bottoms from plastic bottles. The role of the pupil will be played by the cork from the same bottles.

All this is attached to the stump with self-tapping screws. On the horizontal surface of the cut, you can simply lay out pine cones, which will imitate hair. This garden guard, which we whipped up, is ready.

But any schoolchild can make such a funny guard for a dacha, and this is precisely why such a garden sculpture is valued

If it happened that you had to cut down a whole row of country trees, do not be sad. This situation also has its positive side. But you now have a large number of stumps located close to each other. And this is not bad at all. Make them into a fairyland for your children, putting into practice all the information that you have already received in this article.

It will be just a wonderful place to play. First you have to clear each stump of bark. For this you will need a chisel and a hammer. The chisel must be inserted between the bark and the tree trunk, then gently tap it with a hammer. The bark will move away from the trunk and soon the stump will completely lose it. Now it can be thoroughly sanded using medium-grit sandpaper for this purpose.

Such an owl could easily become the companion of Baba Yaga herself and settle in her hut, flying out from time to time to hunt

Be sure to remove wood dust formed during work with a damp cloth. The wood prepared in this way should be treated with an antiseptic, which will protect it from rotting.

Now you can start decorating the stump. Let's choose a large stump to turn it into Baba Yaga's real house. Let's take chalk and outline the location of the future windows and doors of the grandmother's hut. Recesses in wood for doors and windows can be made using a chisel and hammer.

We will need pieces of boards from which we will make doors and window shutters. These parts of the future structure can be painted right now, while they are not yet nailed into place. Doors and shutters should be nailed to the places marked on the stump using nails whose heads have been bitten off. When finishing decorating the hut, you can collect branches and driftwood of unusual shapes from the area to stick them around Baba Yaga’s house. Let them portray dense years.

On smaller stumps you can depict heroes of a variety of folk tales or funny cartoon characters. You can decorate these stumps and draw your intended characters on them using paints for outdoor work. The images outside will wonderfully complement the flowers planted directly inside the stumps. How to do this was described in detail at the beginning of the article. You can limit yourself to pots with plants.

Another wonderful composition, made by a professional artist and sculptor, creates a great mood inherent in a small fairy-tale corner of your garden

We'll turn a couple more stumps into children's chairs. To do this, we won’t even cut out the massive back. If you have old chairs, use their backs for this job. They should be carefully freed from varnish, and then, using ordinary nails, nailed to the stump seats. All that remains is to paint the finished chairs in bright colors that children will definitely like.

Simply turn the small remaining stumps into a flock of fly agarics, using bowls or basins of the appropriate size as their caps. Now you know exactly how such fly agarics can be made. That's it, the improvisation on the theme of the fairy tale is ready.

Stools made of logs, saw cuts and branches

By abandoning the legs, the seat can be made from an ordinary log. By sawing it into several logs and equipping each with a soft pad, we will get an original set for a country holiday.

The disadvantage of this solution is obvious - heavy weight, which creates inconvenience when carrying.

Here's what you can do by combining wooden legs with a massive seat made from a rounded piece of log. This unusual stool claims to be a designer find.

There are no drawers or legs here. The rigidity of the structure is ensured by a massive seat, into which four legs are embedded at 1/3 of its height.

Anyone who is good with a chainsaw can create an original piece of furniture from a log. To do this, you need to make three neat side cuts in a thick block of wood to form the legs. Having made precise markings on the scraps of one trunk, you can cut them out into a set of two stools, nested one inside the other.

Continuing the “forest theme”, let’s see what can be built from the material lying under our feet. A beautiful product can be made from thick branches, freed from bark and polished. This design has one original detail - a drawer for household items located under the seat. The lid is assembled from planed boards mounted on wooden tenons and glue.

This piece of furniture will fit perfectly into a rustic interior style, which is characterized by massive wooden beams, stairs and tables. But it is unlikely to take root in an ordinary kitchen.

Cutting a log makes a ready-made seat for a stool. By cutting three legs from thick branches into it, we get a durable and attractive structure.

Hemp and forks of trunks can be used as bases for the manufacture of original products. Sanded and topped with thick log cuts, they fit perfectly into the interior of a log cabin.

Traditional simple stools

Timeless classics live not only in the facades of buildings. Time-tested solutions are also preserved in the designs of stools. Adding smooth lines to their appearance eliminates boring angularity.

In the photo below we see the classic version. Thanks to the rounded drawers and legs, it looks quite decent. The milled grooves on the legs also improve its appearance.

Simplicity has its own charm. Designers successfully play with this quality, creating deliberately rough, brutal products. Artificially aging furniture is not an easy task. The author had to work a lot on the product, the photo of which we see below.

The category of classic “stool design” includes designs with drawers under the seat. To do this, use wide side frames and hinged lids.

Creating a designer wall

For decoration, it is advisable to choose one side of the room. The design of all planes is a sign of bad taste, and the room will look overloaded. Any room needs to be given air, and it’s not about the windows. It should breathe space, and light empty planes give this effect. Only one “woody” edge of the room will become a kind of accent, which will become its mood. You can lay out the “wood puzzle” yourself, and now we’ll talk about how it’s done.

Floor vases in the interior +51 photos of different styles and shapes

Everyone has a dead tree in their yard that needs to be removed. Now it's time to chop it down. We take a branch and cut it into bars of medium thickness. You can remove the bark from the resulting “pancakes” and then sand it. Thanks to this, you will not drive a thorn when touching the wall. The resulting wood layers should be treated with a special insect repellent, and then placed on glue. It is advisable to varnish the resulting relief - varnished wood can last a long time.

Sophistication and originality

Not everyone likes the hard seat and angular shape of the stool. For fans of aesthetics and comfort, craftsmen offer elegant products with curved legs and soft upholstery.

It is difficult for a beginner to make bent curly legs. Without compromising their beauty, they can be replaced with two pairs of crossed bars connected by a crossbar. But you shouldn’t give up soft foam upholstery.

Let's ask ourselves the question: what is needed to assemble a homemade wooden stool? Four thick boards for the seat, legs and crossbar. By decorating them with carvings, we get an exquisite and high-quality product. You can use it with pleasure at home, and on occasion, make it an exhibit of an exhibition of folk crafts.

When planning to make your first “masterpiece”, do not forget about using firing, stain and varnish for decoration. Even the simplest piece of furniture acquires a noble gloss after finishing with contrast tinting.

In addition to natural wood, stools can be made from chipboard and thick plywood. This solution reduces their weight without losing strength. In the photo below we see an interesting plywood structure. Slotted holes in the seat and legs give it beauty and delicacy.

Square, round and oval seats are yesterday's carpentry art. Today, original solutions are in fashion. From these you can assemble a bench of any length and configuration. Invite your friends to visit and show them this miracle. Among them, there will probably be those who want to play with an unusual furniture “constructor”.

Bar stools

Anyone who believes that a stool must necessarily be low and nondescript is mistaken. Designers successfully prove the opposite. A little imagination and a familiar piece of furniture becomes a “fashionable thing” in the avant-garde style.

The high stool captured in the photo is a bar option. They can decorate the interior of a cafe and the decor of your own apartment. Its lower brother, made in the same style, will take its rightful place at the dining table made of Euro pallets.

These days, bar seats are popular not only in catering establishments, but also in home settings. The tradition of placing bar counters in apartments, which came from overseas, caused a real boom in these products.

A high stool is convenient not only for drinking cocktails at the bar. It can be successfully used as a stand when picking fruit.

Advantages and disadvantages

Chairs made from logs have many advantages:

  • Affordability of the material;
  • Environmental friendliness of the product;
  • High strength and wear resistance of the structure;
  • Ease of manufacture. The work of constructing a chair from a log can be done even by those who do not have carpentry experience. Moreover, the simplest design can be made in less than 1 hour;
  • A broken structure can be easily repaired or disposed of;
  • Ease of product care and restoration;
  • Original appearance of the product. Having a developed imagination, you can build not only a practical, but also an unusual structure.

However, log chairs also have their disadvantages. The disadvantages of products include the following factors:

  • High sensitivity to moisture. Even with careful treatment of the material with water-repellent solutions, a log may crack if exposed to moisture for a long time;
  • The massiveness of the products and their heavy weight;
  • Flammability of the material. Almost any wood is a highly flammable material. Therefore, it is not recommended to use such chairs near an open flame, even after treatment with a fire retardant solution.

Also, the disadvantages of chairs made of natural wood include the specificity of tactile sensations and associations that this type of furniture can provoke.

Folding stools

There are a huge variety of them, from the simplest solutions to very complex transformers.

We present to your attention an original folding design. It consists of two rectangular frame-legs connected in the center by a metal axis. The support frames are attached to the seat with carpentry hinges. When folded, the axle moves along two slots cut into one of the legs. The seat rotates on hinges and stands upright.

Here is another version of a folding stool. His seat is made of two halves. When folded, the legs rotate around an axis and are placed in the same plane. The seat halves are pressed against them on both sides.

Fans of complex folding systems are offered an option consisting of eight pairs of lattice legs connected at the base by a common bar.

The upper ends of the legs on one side are hingedly connected to the seat, which is also made of bars. To fold the structure, take it by the lower slats and move them in the opposite direction. In this case, the lattice legs and seat bars fit into the gaps provided for them, and the stool becomes flat.

Another option is a folding stool with a “crawler” seat. Despite the simplicity of the design, it looks very original. Its two crossed legs are hinged in the center and connected at the top by a wooden segmental seat. By holding the edges, you can easily fold and unfold this stool.

DIY example

Having finished the brief overview, it's time to start the practical part. We offer you a step-by-step guide. Let's say right away that it is better for beginners to avoid tongue-and-groove joints. They require good carpentry skills and the presence of a special tool - a milling machine or, at worst, a hand router.

To work you will need several tools:

  • Tape measure or ruler;
  • Hand saw with fine teeth;
  • Jigsaw for cutting legs and seat;
  • Screwdriver for drilling holes and tightening screws;
  • Belt sander for smoothing sharp edges on parts;
  • PVA glue or wood glue.

Step one

– using a hacksaw from a 30 mm thick planed pine board, we cut blanks for the legs and seat. If there is no board wide enough to make a solid seat, then it can be assembled from several narrow scraps. To do this, you need to mark and drill holes in their side edges for dowels. Having smeared the dowels with glue, they are inserted into the boards, assembled into a single panel and secured with carpentry clamps. After a day, you can start making the seat.

Step two

– cut out the profile of one leg from thick cardboard and transfer it to all the blanks. We do the same with the seat blank.

Step three

– We cut out the legs and seat with a jigsaw, and then sand their sharp edges with a grinder.

Step four

— we assemble the legs in pairs, screwing self-tapping screws into their ends. We also use self-tapping screws to connect pairs of legs together. We arrange them so that they do not meet with previously twisted ones.

Step five

– marking holes for dowels on the legs and seat. Having done this work, lubricate the tenons with wood glue and place the seat on the base.

Anyone who wants to simplify the work a little can refuse to fasten the seat with dowels. Instead, you can screw four screws directly through the lid into the legs from above. To ensure that they do not stand out on a flat surface, drill shallow secret nests for them in advance. After screwing, putty them with wood putty and cover the product with varnish and stain.

When arranging your home and interior, you want to put your soul into it and do something with your own hands. The simplest way is, which is always needed and will remind you that the reader did it himself.

But in order to make a high-quality and reliable piece of furniture, desire alone is not enough. You need to strictly follow the instructions without deviating from them, otherwise the stool will break at the most inopportune moment, and the desire to make a new one will disappear instantly. Let's look at what is useful for this, how to avoid making frequent mistakes, and how to do everything quickly and the first time.

First, let’s determine what the choice of tree affects in principle:

Both cheap and expensive breeds are described here, however, all of them are suitable for the first time. Focus on the price - buy the wood you don’t mind paying for.

Reference

: the cheapest option is linden, the most expensive is oak.

Drawing with dimensions

It is recommended to adhere to standard sizes of stools, since they are calculated on the basis of physical formulas and laws of strength. A stool of arbitrary dimensions will most likely have a displaced center of gravity and several points of stress concentration, which will reduce its service life.

You can go two ways:

  • find a drawing of a stool on the Internet;
  • measure the finished stool after disassembling it.

Dimensions are also important for the selection of fasteners and connecting elements

. All these parts also have their standardized dimensions and are designed for certain loads.

Important

: even simply doubling the scale of the stool, while maintaining the proportions, will result in a completely different design with different operating conditions.

Tools

Basic list:

Consumables:

  1. Stain.
  2. Wood varnish.
  3. Wood putty.

How to make original beautiful furniture?

Important

: After a few days, when the paint and varnish have dried, you may notice a loose surface and ripples. This happens when the room temperature changes suddenly. To prevent this, you need to perform all work at a static temperature and avoid changes.

This defect is eliminated by sanding the coating using fine-caliber sandpaper and then applying an additional layer. If you have a sanding machine at hand, you can create a perfectly smooth reflective surface, although modern trends say that matte varnish and gloss are in fashion these days.

Decorating a homemade structure

A stool made according to the instructions described above will look good in itself. Additionally, it can be decorated using the following methods:

:

The logical question is: what is wood putty used for? First of all, to eliminate cracks and errors that appeared during the work. But it can also be used as a decorative element.

. It is used to draw patterns, create a textured texture, and change color.

Important

: The best way to redesign a stool is to combine all the above methods in the right proportion. This will make the piece of furniture truly original and unique.

An alternative is to varnish only the side surface and leave the top untouched, or apply matte varnish. It all depends solely on the imagination of the master.

Features of operation

Chairs made from pieces of logs can be used both in an apartment or private house, and outdoors as garden furniture. However, in order for the products to last a long time, when using them you must adhere to the following recommendations:

  • Protect furniture items from moisture as much as possible. Do not place chairs on a wet surface and do not wash them with a stream of water;
  • If cleaning is necessary, the product can be wiped with a dry or slightly damp cloth;
  • It is not advisable to place hot items on chairs made from solid logs. This can cause damage to the wood.

When using the product as a piece of garden furniture, in autumn and winter, the chair should be stored in a dry and warm room. It is unacceptable to cover furniture with polyethylene for a long time, as this will lead to a greenhouse effect and damage to the wood.

A log chair should be periodically impregnated with stain

Periodically, the product must be updated by sanding it with sandpaper, impregnating it with stain and opening it with varnish. For home use, this will have to be done once every 3-4 years. For garden wooden chairs, the coating is renewed annually.
