What are coupe door systems

Sliding door systems are the main distinguishing feature of a sliding wardrobe.
The compartment door system includes: guides, sets of rollers, door frame profile (handles, horizons, dividers), stoppers, positioners, closers, Schlegel. The variety of configurations depends on the type of system and manufacturer. Systems are available in steel and aluminum. Steel systems have been used less recently due to the clear advantages of aluminum systems and the slight difference in price. There are frameless systems that only include rollers; due to their unimportant quality, we will not consider such systems here.

Hanging system

Suspended systems are called systems that rely on rollers on the upper guide; the lower roller or rod only limits the movement of the door. The entire load in such systems falls on the upper guide. Since doors can weigh 20-40 kg each, special attention is paid when installing such a system in built-in wardrobes, where the top rail is attached to the ceiling. In this case, it is necessary that the ceiling can withstand the load of the doors.

Support system

The support system, on the contrary, rests on the lower guide with rollers; the upper guide does not bear the load. This system can be installed in rooms with suspended ceilings and plasterboard ceilings.

Folding and swing doors

Sometimes there is a need to make swing or folding doors (accordion). They are usually installed in narrow cabinets, including built-ins. The use of sliding doors with a small width is impractical; in this case, swing or folding doors are installed of the same system that is used in the cabinets located in your room, so that all doors look the same style. A separate article is devoted to each system, which contains diagrams, equipment, technical characteristics, and colors.

Is it worth installing hinged doors in a built-in closet?

When choosing a built-in wardrobe, it is important to choose the right door design.
Hinged doors are not used as often as sliding doors, but they have their advantages. Furniture fashion has changed in recent years. It did not bypass built-in wardrobes either, so classic swing doors for built-in wardrobes were often used instead of fashionable sliding doors. To open such a wardrobe, you need more space, but this disadvantage is more than compensated by the advantages.

Components of the kits

In terms of their design, the various mechanisms of sliding doors differ little from each other, except perhaps in the specifics of the displacement of the leaves. Therefore, the kits include almost the same elements; the only difference is in their number and design.

Rails

Profiles are mainly used as guides in sliding door systems.

The difference between them is the number of “tracks”. The specifics of the application depend on how exactly the canvas covers the opening: end-to-end or overlapping. In fact, these are traditional sliding doors, well known to many. When choosing a profile, the metal from which it is made also matters. For massive doors, it is better not to use aluminum (even though it is cheaper); Deformation will cause problems with sliding doors - only steel.

Roller bearings

They also differ in design features.8) The required number of wheels (and the upper mechanisms can have up to them is determined by the weight of the leaf and the type of sliding system. There are also differences in the arrangement of the wheels themselves: symmetrical or offset (asymmetrical). For doors weighing no more than 80 kg, roller mechanisms with two supports can be used But for massive canvases, at least four are installed, which is associated with an increased load on the structure.

Locking elements

They are not basic, but perform important functions. The first is to prevent a “hard” impact of the door on the wall (if the opening is located close to it) or the roller flying out of the guide. Such parts are called motion limiters. The second is fixing the door in a certain position. This is necessary in order to prevent spontaneous movement of the canvas. This is possible, for example, in the event of a strong draft or disruption of the horizontal orientation of the rails due to shrinkage of the structure.

The sliding door mechanism can be additionally equipped with automation elements (closers, mini-electric motors, cables, hooks, etc.). But they do not make any changes to the principle of its functioning; They only increase ease of use, nothing more.

Design features and advantages of the sliding system

There are no standard door sizes for sliding wardrobes: they can be made to the required length and width. But there are dimensions that are most convenient.

  1. Width: within 50-110 cm (optimally 60-90 cm). Narrower doors may warp and pop out of their tracks. Wider ones will be more difficult to move due to the heavy weight, and the shelves will be inconvenient to use (you will have to move the door far to access).
  2. Number of doors: selected based on the width of the cabinet and the width of 1 door. The most important thing is that the doors should not interfere with the use of the contents. This is relevant if there are large, wide compartments inside.

Doors for sliding wardrobes can be sliding or folding. Sliding structures are most often used.

  • Sliding doors, compared to folding ones, are simpler, more difficult to break and easier to repair.
  • Since the door moves along one plane parallel to the wall, there is no need to leave free space in front of the cabinet. This is true for small or narrow rooms (for example, corridors).

Swing systems

This category includes lifting, downward opening mechanisms, as well as those activated by gripping the handle and when pressed.

An important and distinctive feature is that the facade for the systems must be fixed along one of the sides of the furniture body.

Typically, furniture hinges act as attachment points for the movement of sashes.

The opening mechanism can complement the hinges, or replace them completely. The design of the opening mechanism is taken into account here.

Opening down

. A mechanism that complements the capabilities of swing doors. This is a secretory element. Also called a bar limiter. The newest development is considered to be a mechanism called Winch. Mounted in both overhead and mortise ways.

For a folding facade, it is better not to use 4-hinged type hinges. It is better to take mortise ones, mounted at the end. So they will not interfere in situations where the reverse side of the facade will be used as a tabletop.

Tilt mechanism
Tilt and turn lift systems

. The most budget-friendly way to make a rotating facade is to install a gas elevator. More complex and also expensive elements are able to move the door smoothly and silently and close it completely.

The folding mechanism deserves special attention. With its help, the door is raised and fixed in a given position, and can also be wound by the lid. At the same time, there will be no characteristic rotation of the sash, as was true for the first option.

Up opening mechanism

Vertical opening

. Or parallel. Another option is to remove the doors from the closed position, which are parallel to the body, and lift them without changing the plane. This is a vertical lift. The downside is that moving requires free space above the cabinet. And this is not always possible to realize.

Vertical mechanism
Double opening . It folds like an accordion and the doors rise. Looks impressive. Recommended for use on tall cabinets where it is impossible to install one solid hinged door.

Installation of fittings for sliding doors

Installation of mechanisms is carried out in a certain order:

  • measure and install guides according to the manufacturer’s recommendations; the guides should fit tightly in the opening, there should be no cracks or gaps between the opening and the doors;
  • drill holes in the side profile of the sash: the hole should pass through two walls, the diameter of the inner part is 5 mm, the outer part is 10 mm;
  • install the insert sleeve and secure it with a self-tapping screw;
  • mount the plastic support into the track and secure it with a hexagon;
  • place the doors: first in the lower part, then in the upper;
  • adjust the shutters by loosening the screws on the supports.

As a stopper, you can use a magnetic latch, which is attached to the bottom of the door.

Accessories for swing wardrobe doors

You can buy fittings for swing wardrobe doors. The fittings are made of reliable, durable materials: aluminum alloy, wear-resistant plastic. The components are easy to install and carefully thought out.

Advantages of rotary doors

During operation, a pivoting and sliding door exhibits many advantages over swing or sliding type products. One of the main advantages of the design is its versatility. This door works great both in large doorways and when installed in rooms with small dimensions.

In the open position, the door leaf extends beyond the opening by less than half its width. And given the possibility of opening the canvas in any direction, convenient use in narrow spaces is ensured.

If you purchase the door structure assembled, installation takes a minimum of time. Installation measures only include the procedure for securing the leaf in the upper part of the door frame.

Thanks to the presence of special brush-type sealing elements, even this door design provides a high degree of noise and thermal insulation. In addition, due to their ease of use, the products are recommended for use in homes with small children, elderly people, and residents with limited physical capabilities.

Installation of a swing facade on furniture hinges

Today there are the following types of door hinges:

  • hinged;
  • four-hinged (overhead, semi-overhead or inset);
  • products for glass structures;
  • corner;
  • inverse.

How to mount a door leaf on hinges

Before installing hinges on the door and cabinet wall, you need to take into account the material the furniture is made of, and also determine how many door hinges will be needed. The number of products used depends on the size of the door and its weight. For example, with a facade height of about 1500-2000 cm, which weighs up to 13 kg, you will need 3 hinges.

Get ready for work

You should select the following tools with which you can hang swing doors in a closet with your own hands. Prepare:

  • electric drill and drill corresponding to the diameter of the mounting screw;
  • milling machine, nozzle of equal diameter;
  • tape measure, pencil for marking;
  • building level;
  • We screwed it with a regular screwdriver that fits the size of the fasteners.

Procedure

  1. Mark the location on the door to install the hinges. The distance between the loops depends on the height of the fabric, and 8-15 cm should be measured from the edge.
  2. Place the hinge on the door and use a pencil to mark the location for the cup of the fixture.
  3. Drill out niches for the cup using a router with an attachment. Use the sharpest possible tool, drilling to a depth of 13mm.
  4. Insert the loop inside the finished recess, align the device horizontally. Mark the locations for preparing holes for fastenings.
  5. Drill holes for fasteners.
  6. Attach the hinge to the door surface.
  7. Place the door against the cabinet body with your own hands, align the position of the panel, and mark the cabinets where the strike plate should be installed.
  8. Drill through the cabinet at the marked points.
  9. Install the strike plate onto the screws.
  10. Connect both parts of the loops.
  11. Use a screwdriver to adjust the hinge to the correct position.

Design flaws

It is worth understanding that any design has disadvantages. Based on the significance of the shortcomings, the real value of the product and its functionality under certain conditions are determined. Pivoting interior doors have a number of the following disadvantages:

  • Requires the use of only light types of canvas;
  • Complexity of design;
  • High price.

It is not possible to equip a structure of this type with heavy door leaves due to a significant increase in wear of parts. Also, under the weight of the canvas made of natural materials, deformation of the elements of the rotary-motor mechanism is possible. For the manufacture of rotary doors, composite materials in the form of MDF are used, which are lightweight.

Due to the complexity of the design, making a rotary door yourself is an extremely problematic and time-consuming process. The presence of a ready-made rotor mechanism makes the procedure slightly easier.

The high cost of doors of this type of action is due to the presence of a complex mechanism and a complex assembly system. Almost always, the production of rotary doors is carried out using high-precision equipment with program control modes. The assembly procedure is carried out semi-automatically.

Installation Rules

It is not difficult to install a door opening mechanism, the main thing is to follow the basic rules. Depending on the type of structure, these points will differ:

  • sliding doors - first, take measurements of the internal perimeter and draw up a drawing. Next, prepare the floor surface so that it is level; install aluminum guides and mount the door. After the product is built-in, they deal with the internal filling;
  • swing doors - installation occurs from the lower elements, if present. The hinges are screwed on and the façade sashes are installed. After which each door is adjusted;
  • accordion - measurements are taken, after which the lower and upper rails along which the element will move are fixed. Hinges and fittings are installed, and at the end of the procedure the door itself is installed;
  • roller shutters - door guides fit into the opening from the inside, as shown in the photo.

In general, consumers are satisfied with built-in structures with any type of door. It is worth noting that sliding systems are in greatest demand. Choosing a door for a built-in closet must be based on the square footage of the room, the material and access to internal storage.

Accessories

Considering the fact that swing-and-turn doors open by simply pushing forward in either direction, the door leaf does not require special designs for door handles. In fact, you can do without them altogether. If you still want to have a structure equipped with handles, the ideal option for such a door is safe recesses that do not extend beyond the door leaf. Such handles are considered safe due to the minimal risk of injury during operation.

Also, such elements allow, during the process of opening the canvas, to position it as close as possible to the adjacent walls.

The simplest locking system can be based on the operation of ordinary magnets built into the end part and the box. If it is necessary to securely lock the doors, a mortise system is used in the form of a magnetic lock with a protruding push-type handle in the door leaf. The box is equipped with brush sealing elements.

Limited space

A sliding wardrobe is a salvation for elongated rooms where there is not enough space to open standard doors. A narrow corridor, hallway, balcony or loggia - a storage system with such facades will be the only correct solution here.

It should be taken into account that sliding doors “eat up” at least 10 cm of the internal space of the cabinet. When buying a model with a depth of 60 cm, you can count on the effective use of only 50 cm. In products with a traditional door opening system, the entire depth is functionally used.

Varieties

Thanks to a special door opening system, the fittings of a sliding wardrobe will differ significantly from the fittings of its swing counterpart. Today, a standard sliding wardrobe is equipped with the following types of elements:

  • profiles – necessary for the operation of doors;
  • guides - doors move along them;
  • rollers - wheels for moving the sashes;
  • stoppers – position locks;
  • seals - allow the door not to spoil the surface of the body from the inside;
  • sliding system - a type of mechanism for operating the sashes.

Each of the listed types should be considered separately, highlighting the main features.

Profiles

The modern market of furniture fittings for sliding wardrobes classifies profiles into 2 types:

  • steel - has a relatively low cost and is often used for economy class sliding wardrobes or domestic models. Externally, it has a limited color palette, which is why it is gradually losing its popularity;
  • aluminum - presented in two subtypes at once - a profile with an anodized coating, as well as an option in a PVC shell. Such profiles are durable, light in weight and have a wide range. Aluminum parts are produced in a wide range of colors and textures, so choosing a shade for the product is not difficult.

Aluminum

Steel
Profiles for sliding doors made of aluminum with an anodized coating have a particularly hard surface, which is why they are considered durable and resistant to mechanical damage. This product does not scratch or fade in the sun.

If the goal is silent operation of the cabinet and doors, it is better to give preference to an aluminum profile in PVC.

Guides

These parts are supplied in quantities of 2 pieces. for one product. One of them is installed on the top panel of the compartment, the other is mounted on the bottom bar. In the space between the guides there is a door along which it moves. According to the manufacturing materials, the guides are made of plastic, aluminum and steel.

Aluminum guides have excellent characteristics: they are ergonomic and aesthetic, and have a wide range of colors. Despite the relatively high cost, such elements are durable.

Guides for the door mechanism are:

  • single-lane;
  • two-way;
  • three-lane.

This indicator depends on the type of mechanism and the number of doors in the cabinet. The top rails also have several rows according to the number of doors. These parts are installed using wood screws.

Rollers

High-quality rollers are responsible for moving the sashes along the body strip. They consist of a base and wheels that run along guides. The higher the quality of the rollers, the smoother and softer the door will operate. Most elements are equipped with bearings to prevent noise.

Cabinet casters are available in two versions:

  • asymmetry - such a device is used to move the door along the lower guide. The entire support of the sash falls on the lower wheel, the upper one is supporting. This roller is suitable for sliding cabinet doors with an open handle. The part itself can be adjusted in height;
  • symmetry - this option is installed in systems with a closed cabinet handle. Elements can be built into a product with mirror, glass or plastic facades.

When selecting rollers, you should pay attention to their quality: symmetrical elements allow you to install the door without distortions, ensuring its smooth and precise operation.

Asymmetrical

Symmetrical

Stopper

Fittings for coupe models always include stoppers. They are supplied in quantities of 1 piece. for 1 door. A stopper is installed on the lower aluminum guide in order to fix the door in the right place when opening. It is a thin metal bar with mustaches - springs. The part works according to this principle:

  • when the door is opened, the roller moves along the lower guide;
  • the wheel runs into the lower plate of the stopper;
  • the roller falls into the gap between the plates and the door is blocked.

Many owners believe that there is no need to install such accessories, but they turn out to be wrong. For a two-door design, stoppers may not be used, but if there are more than two doors, such an element becomes necessary for convenience.

Buy high-quality steel stoppers, and check them for integrity before installation.

Stopper location

Sealant

This element is installed on the side of compartment doors and ensures a tight fit of the door to the body. Today, seals are made of silicone and polyurethane. It is worth considering the main types of seals for compartment furniture:

  • n-shaped 4 mm - used for cabinet facades equipped with plastic, glass or mirror, 4 mm thick. Suitable for aluminum profile;
  • herringbone type - structurally different from the first option, but also suitable for mirror and glass surfaces;
  • n-shaped 8 mm - used for decorative inserts on facades, 8 mm thick.

In addition to the indicated seals, a schlegel is glued to the end of the door - a soft brush that helps prevent the door from hitting the body. The vertical guide of the fittings for sliding wardrobe doors has grooves for gluing this element. The bristles on the brush are available in thicknesses of 6 and 12 mm, so owners have the opportunity to choose the option according to its intended purpose.

Sliding system

Due to the great popularity of sliding wardrobes, components for them are produced both assembled and separately. The Versailles system is considered the most common on the furniture market, according to which a large number of cabinets are now produced.

Sliding systems are the main important elements of the compartment, the mechanisms through which the doors operate. Today the following options are distinguished:

  • support systems - this option consists of two aluminum guides, rollers and a profile for assembling a stiffening frame. This system is easy to assemble, reliable and applicable to large doors;
  • suspension systems - consist only of an upper guide, a roller carriage and stoppers. The door in the system has completely silent opening, and the components are affordable. In addition, the hanging system is applicable to doors that are not framed with a profile.

It is necessary to choose the type of sliding system in accordance with the weight of the doors, facades and mechanism.

Hanging

Homemade sliding doors

Any door leaf can be installed on rollers and will work as a sliding door. The guide and all other components - rollers (carrying and flag), stoppers, stops - can be purchased. Hang on them at least a piece of plywood or a door assembled from several boards. This will be the simplest and cheapest option. But making the mechanism yourself is a more difficult task. One of the options for a sliding door mechanism made from scrap materials (from round pipes of different diameters) is in the video. The system was intended to be installed in a closet, but judging by the design, it can easily withstand even a solid oak door.
