Owners of one-room and small-sized apartments often wonder about organizing a practical and comfortable area for living and relaxing in limited space. The ideal solution would be to purchase transformable furniture. A popular product in this segment is the wardrobe bed - a standard bed placed in a special wardrobe.
What are the different types of wardrobe bed models?
<
>
The market for transformable furniture is constantly evolving, offering consumers improved and multifunctional solutions. In addition to standard wardrobe beds, which are 2-in-1 furniture, the furniture market offers models that combine the functions of three or more items. 3 in 1 furniture is often used in the arrangement of children's rooms, living rooms and offices.
The 3 in 1 category includes models that combine such transformation schemes as:
- wardrobe-bed-sofa;
- wardrobe-bed-table;
- bunk wardrobe bed.
In the first option, when folding the transformable bed, the lower part of the furniture is transformed into a cozy sofa. In the second option, the design provides for a table built into the cabinet. During transformation, the tabletop does not change its position, and accordingly, the objects located on the table do not change their position.
Bunk wardrobe beds are two single transformers connected to each other by hinges that provide synchronous folding and unfolding of beds.
Advantages and disadvantages of a bed with a lifting mechanism
A small room no longer feels cramped if the bed is hidden in a closet
Advantages:
- Rational use of free space . The unfolded bed is used only when there is a need for it, and the rest of the time it is folded. As a result, during the daytime the room remains uncluttered.
- The furniture fits harmoniously into the interior . When folded, the lifting bed is perceived as a wardrobe. When designing a bed, the facade can be selected in accordance with the interior design.
- Saving on mattress cleaning and bed linen washing . While the bed is raised, the mattress and bedding are protected from dust, so you will need to use dry cleaning services less often.
- Possibility of self-production . Despite the apparent complexity of the design of a transformable bed, you can find on sale all the parts and materials necessary for its self-assembly.
Flaws:
- The resource is less than that of a bed with a static bed . This is explained by the fact that the lifting mechanism, when folding and unfolding the bed, is subjected to significant loads, which are transferred to the supporting frame.
- The price is higher than the cost of static analogues . This is due to the fact that a bed with a lifting mechanism is a complex device, the assembly of which requires a greater number of parts than in the manufacture of conventional beds.
Where and how can you put a pull-out or folding bed
Transformer in the design of the office
There are no restrictions on the installation of the transformer. The only condition for placement is that there should be at least half a meter from the foot to the wall when the bed is unfolded. This distance is necessary so that you can unfold the bed and, if necessary, move around it.
Another recommendation: the folded transformer should fit harmoniously into the interior of the room. How the furniture fits into the interior largely depends on what fronts will be used when assembling the cabinet.
The front part of the wardrobe bed - what are the finishing options?
A chipboard facade is the most common option, which is not surprising, since the material is inexpensive and looks great
Chipboard facades covered with vinyl film are one of the most affordable, but also the most attractive options
A facade made of chipboard with overhead mirror inserts is a common solution, as it fits into most modern interiors, where the presence of mirrors is a mandatory decorative element
A solid mirror facade is a stylish, but not cheap solution, since a mirror the size of a bed will not be cheap
Combined facades with painted glass inserts can be matched to the walls covered with combined wallpaper, as shown in the photo
The door facade of the bed made of lining is a practical solution for the interior of a country house or cottage
A facade made of furniture board is a solution designed for a connoisseur, since this option will not be cheap, and externally such a bed looks no better than products made from chipboard
How the sleeping area of a bed is arranged in a closet - dimensions and methods of transformation

Folding models . In such a system, the bed folds back on itself and the result is a full-fledged bed. The mattress and bed linen in this design do not need to be removed during transformation; for this purpose, special fixing belts are provided.
Retractable (roll-out) models . When folded, such structures take up much less space than full-size bed cabinets. The disadvantage of such furniture is that the mattress will have to be removed from the bed before folding. |

Horizontal rise of the bed . In this scheme, the stock is adjacent to the supporting body with its long side. This scheme is good because there is little load on the transformation mechanism. As a result, the mechanism will last longer without the need to replace springs or gas struts.
Vertical rise of the bed . In this design, the lifting part is attached to the supporting frame with a transverse end. This method of raising the bed is the most common, but it cannot be used on two-tier models.
Wardrobe bed and sofa - 3 in 1 . When folded, such a system looks like an ordinary sofa in a room. When unfolded, the structure looks like a bed with soft armrests. |
Illustrations | Types of transformers by number of beds |
Double (from 160×190 mm to 200×200 mm). A bed of this size can comfortably accommodate two adults. It is advisable to place such transformers in the bedroom or living room.
One-and-a-half (from 120×190 mm to 145×200 mm). A bed with this size is a good option for an adult. You can install and use such a bed in a bedroom, office or in a teenager’s room. This furniture can comfortably accommodate one adult.
Single beds . (from 70×190 mm, to 90×200 mm). This is a great option for installing in a teenager's room or children's room.
Two-tier . In bunk structures, two single beds are used, since larger beds will require significantly more space when folded. |
Where to start assembling the bed-wardrobe structure
A simple drawing of a double transformer with dimensions
Assembling a bed with a lifting mechanism is a multi-stage job, with each stage performed in a certain sequence. At the initial stage, a drawing is selected that must correspond to the selected dimensions and configuration. Taking into account the developed drawing, the materials from which the planned structure is assembled are prepared and cut.
Tools and materials
What materials are the lift beds made from? There are many options, but if the assembly is being done for the first time, I recommend chipboard.
Vinyl-coated chipboard is an inexpensive, easy-to-process material
The advantage of using particle board over other lumber is obvious - it is low cost with strength comparable to the strength of a solid wood board. To assemble the supporting frame of the cabinet and the bed, I recommend using a plate with a thickness of 18 mm.
Board 20x60 mm is the best solution for lamellas - mattress holders
For lamellas - mattress holders, we use a board with a thickness of 20 mm. We will use standard confirmats and glued dowels as fasteners for assembling the housings. To strengthen corner joints, you can use L-shaped metal strips and self-tapping screws.
Now the most important point is the choice of transformation mechanism. If we need to assemble a lifting bed, we use one of two types of lifting mechanisms.
Illustrations | Types of lifting mechanisms and their descriptions |
Spring mechanism . One part of the mechanism is attached to the supporting body, while the second part is mounted to the frame of the stock. When the stock is lowered, the springs stretch, creating a force that prevents sharp reclining. If the bed needs to be transformed into a closet, it is enough to apply a little force, after which the tensioned springs will begin to contract, lifting the bed upward.
Mechanism with gas lift struts . This device works on the same principle as a spring unit, with the difference that the gas elevator does not make squeaks and works for a long time. Over time, the pressure in the racks weakens and then the fittings need to be replaced.
Electrically driven mechanism . This system is assembled on the basis of gas lifts, which are controlled by an electric drive. The advantage of the solution is the ability to control it from the remote control. The disadvantage is the high cost of the system. |
Preparing elements for the structure
Professional cutting of chipboard - short deadlines and high cutting accuracy are guaranteed
You can prepare the structural elements of the bed cabinet with your own hands, or you can purchase the necessary materials and order their cutting from specialized organizations.
In the first case, you will have to cut the particle board yourself using a saw tool that is available. If you have the necessary tools and experience in cutting chipboard, you can do this work yourself.
In the second case, you and your drawing contact one of the many small furniture factories, where they will cut the slab into separate pieces to order with a guaranteed high quality of cut.
Installation of a wardrobe-bed in details and pictures
Illustrations | Assembly Description |
Preparing the workspace . We clear the assembly area so that nothing interferes with the installation.
Assembling the wardrobe-bed box . We assemble the supporting frame horizontally - on the floor. When assembling, check the angles, they should be 90 degrees.
Attaching the frame to the wall . We lift the assembled outer casing into a vertical position and move it close to the wall. Using L-shaped hardware, we fix the structure to the wall.
Frame and lifting mechanism of the bed-wardrobe . At this stage we attach the lifting mechanism to the stock frame. Given the significant load on the unit, fastening is carried out using bolts and nuts.
Attaching the stock frame to the body . To build the bed frame inside the outer body, you need to fix the counter part of the lifting mechanism on the wardrobe frame. In this part of the assembly the load is less intense than where the mechanism is attached to the internal frame. Therefore, the lifting mechanism is fastened with self-tapping screws.
Installation of mattress holders . A longitudinal beam is installed inside the frame of the bed, which will divide the bed into two equal parts (relevant for double structures). We fasten the same beams on the sides of the drama with a distance of 50 mm from the upper edge of the bed. We install lamellas across the frame with longitudinal beams one at a time and fix them with self-tapping screws, 2 pieces on the edge of each lamella.
Facade installation . A solid facade is attached to the inside of the stock, imitating a wardrobe door. Handles are also attached to the top for easy tilting of the structure. At the foot of the bed we attach a solid strip of chipboard, which will serve as a support for the bed. |
