Today, the popularity of dishwashers (hereinafter also referred to as dishwashers, PMM) is growing: more and more people are installing them in their kitchens. But not all owners know how to connect a dishwasher to communications.
The new dishwasher saves owners from manually washing dishes
Of course, you can call a specialist who, for a fee, will connect the new equipment to the electrical network, water supply and sewerage. But owners who have a minimum set of tools and certain skills can connect the dishwasher to the water supply and sewer system themselves. The connection is carried out in several stages, including preparatory stages. Let's take a closer look at them.
Useful tips
Here are some useful tips for your attention that will not only allow you to connect your dishwasher correctly, but will also extend the life of the equipment:
- Installing a drain hose into a sink is extremely unsafe, although it makes the connection process much easier. The danger is that the waste water drain may fall out of the sink and flood the neighbors below.
- Electrolux equipment is very demanding in terms of installation rules. The maximum tilt to one side should not exceed 2 degrees, so be sure to check this point with a building level.
- If you decide to buy any model from Siemens, be sure to look at the dimensions of the case and check it with the manufacturing standards of the furniture into which it will be installed. Very often, Siemens neglects technical standards and creates non-standard dimensions, as a result of which difficulties arise when installing a dishwasher in a finished kitchen.
- Do not connect the grounding contact to gas or water pipes under any circumstances. The grounding must be connected to the grounding bus of the apartment panel. We talked about how to make grounding in an apartment in a separate article.
- The air gap between the wall and the back wall of the equipment should be at least 5 cm, which is quite enough for air circulation.
- The kit necessarily contains connection rules and a visual diagram for a specific model. You only need to rely on it, because... All conditions are purely individual, although they have much in common.
- It is not recommended to use surge protectors (extension cords), because they very often cause accidents and fires. If there is no other way to supply power, it is recommended to make an electrical extension cord yourself. This method of connecting a dishwasher via an extension cord can be used as an exception.
- If you decide to place a free-standing dishwasher next to a stove, refrigerator or oven, connect a separate line from the distribution box to each appliance so as not to overload the outlet installed near all devices.

What to look for when choosing dishwashing equipment
The advantages of a built-in dishwasher over a free-standing one are that it significantly saves kitchen space and fits harmoniously into the finished design. All you have to do is decide what size machine you need and correlate the dimensions of the equipment with the location of its intended location.
Choosing a size
Built-in dishwashers come in several sizes, and, accordingly, can accommodate different amounts of dishes.
Table 1. Dimensions of dishwashers
Size | Dimensions in centimeters | Maximum capacity (in number of place settings) |
Mini | 50/50/55 | 5 |
Narrow | 45/55/85 | 8 |
Full size | 60/60/85 | 17 |
Please note: different equipment manufacturers may vary in size by up to 5 cm.
How to plan the installation of installations of various sizes, drawing
Mini dishwashers are convenient because they can be built into a small kitchen, even under a sink or in a pencil case, since it is similar in size to a microwave oven and its location at eye level is quite convenient. Narrow units should only be purchased if you do not have a large family. It is advisable to choose full-size ones if you have a lot of relatives and the house is full of guests. But, you need to understand that such a machine will take up more space in the kitchen.
There are different types of machines, the body dimensions of which may vary.
Energy efficiency classes and labeling
Electricity consumption and energy efficiency are also important points to pay attention to when purchasing. Manufacturers are required to indicate the energy efficiency class for each product.
As a rule, it is indicated on a sticker that is pasted on the device itself or placed in a package with documents for the equipment. Classes are marked with Latin letters: A+++, A++, A+, A, B, C, D (until 2010, the markings were indicated by the letters A, B, C, D, E, F, G), where, respectively, class A +++ – the most economical model in terms of electricity and water consumption.
How energy efficiency classes are marked for various types of dishwashers
But the price for such models will be significantly higher than for a product with a subsequent gradation of classes. The sticker should also indicate:
- product model and brand;
- water consumption in liters per cycle;
- electricity consumption per cycle (kWh);
- drying class (A - G);
- number of sets of dishes;
- class of noise produced in decibels.

Connecting to a water supply: step-by-step instructions
Connecting a dishwasher is not a very difficult procedure. You can do it yourself, the main thing is to carefully study the instructions and follow the installation rules. Let's consider the procedure for connecting the PMM to water supply lines.
To HVS
Before starting work, you need to prepare materials and tools:
- hose of the required length;
- washing machine valve;
- pliers or a small gas wrench;
- FUM tape or plumbing tape.
As a rule, dishwashers are installed in the kitchen, near water pipes. However, there are different situations, so you often first have to draw a line to the installation site of the PMM. It is necessary to ensure free passage of the inlet hose, without tension.
Then do the following:
- Turn off the water (close the common valve).
- Disconnect the flexible supply to the kitchen faucet and install a valve for the washing machine. Then the flexible connection from the tap is connected back. If the valve is closed for now, the water supply can already be resumed so as not to cause inconvenience to family members.
- The inlet hose is screwed onto the PMM inlet pipe. It is recommended to use an element curved at a right angle. This will allow you to move the car closer to the wall.
- The second end of the hose is connected to the outlet of the valve installed at the end of the cold water pipeline (for the washing machine).
This completes the connection procedure. You can connect the machine to the sewer and perform a test run of the machine.
The inlet hose is connected by hand. There is no need to use wrenches for it; the plastic nuts have a sufficient diameter so that they can be tightened tightly by hand.
To DHW
Connecting to the hot water supply, according to the designers, will save energy and eliminate the need to heat water in the machine itself.
There is a certain reason for this, but we must take into account that the price of hot water is much higher than cold water.
If their cost were the same, the savings would be noticeable. And so it turns out that instead of expensive heating, expensive water is used.
The only indisputable advantage is the increase in the service life of the heating element, which turns out to be practically not involved in the operation of the machine. Connecting a machine to a hot water supply line is technologically no different from connecting it to a cold water pipeline. However, there are some nuances.
You need to purchase a hose designed to work with water, the temperature of which can be from 70° and above. There are samples that can withstand temperatures up to 90°. As a rule, such hoses are marked with a red stripe. Alternatively, the plastic nuts may be red.
Otherwise, the procedure is no different from that outlined above, you just need to connect to the DHW line.
Hybrid method
High-level (Premium) dishwashers can be designed for simultaneous use of hot and cold water. They set the desired temperature independently by mixing hot and cold flows in the required proportions.
Experts say that this option is the most economical and convenient, although it also has its drawbacks. For example, an unstable supply of hot water, or the possibility of turning it off.
In addition, the low quality of hot water requires frequent cleaning and replacement of filters, which is not cheap.
The procedure for hybrid connection of a PMM to a water supply system is a sequential connection of the machine to the hot water supply and hot water supply lines.
You will need the same tools and materials, only you will need two hoses and valves for the machine.
When performing work, you need to be careful not to mix up the hoses and not to connect the hot water inlet to the cold pipeline, and vice versa.
It is recommended to complete the connection of one line first, then the other. You can check the operation of the machine only after connecting both lines.
The inlet hose can be equipped with AquaControl or AquaStop elements, which stop the water supply if leaks occur. When using a hybrid connection, it is recommended to choose such hoses, since the risk of leaks doubles.
What materials are facades made of?
Cladding facade panels made of different materials are supplied to the market. Models made from MDF are popular. Medium density fiberboard is resistant to moisture and temperature changes. MDF does not emit toxic substances harmful to health. The plate is durable and reliable. It is necessary to choose a panel that will match the color of other furniture items.
Particleboard is considered the most affordable in terms of cost. But this material has a number of disadvantages, the most important one being its short service life. Chipboard panels quickly deform. When integrity is compromised, hazardous substances are released.
It is very rare that natural wood is chosen for the facade, because the material is expensive and requires special care. For decoration, a thin layer of wood called veneer is often used. This façade gives the structure a solid appearance.
Although some use PVC film, which experts do not recommend. The operation of a dishwasher is associated with the generation of heat, which leads to its rapid peeling and loss of its original properties. The facade can be finished with metal, glass, plastic.
Thanks to the decorative coating, it is possible to hide the structure. Once the surface is finally processed, it is impossible to guess that there is a dishwasher behind it. It looks like an ordinary kitchen cabinet.
If you choose the right fittings and use different decorative elements, you can emphasize the originality of furniture accessories and give the surface a finished look. Before installing the front on the dishwasher, you can watch the video. Be sure to follow all recommendations. If you strictly follow the advice, the decorative panel can be installed in a short time, without spending a lot of effort.

Can it be connected to hot water supply?
There are PMM models designed for connection to hot water supply networks. This feature should be clearly noted in the user manual.
There are also machines that can connect to both lines at once (DHW and cold water). They are called hybrid.
Such machines independently mix flows from different lines to obtain the desired water temperature. This is an economical and convenient way of working, but it also has a lot of disadvantages.
For example, more hoses will be required and additional connection points will appear, increasing the risk of leaks. In addition, the temperature of the hot water in the line is unstable, which creates an unwanted load on the electronics of the machine.
It is also necessary to take into account that the quality of hot water is much worse than cold water. DHW lines contain a large amount of suspended matter and small particles. They clog filters and form limescale deposits on machine parts, shortening their service life.

Location options
Module of a ready-made already assembled wall
If you plan to install standard equipment, its width should not be less than 0.45 m. During installation, you will need to remove all shelves and remove the back wall to connect communications. Sometimes it is necessary to remove the bottom panel. The device must be in a horizontal position. Its position should be checked for level and leveled using the adjustable feet. To assemble the decorative hinged panel, doors removed from the module are used. It can also be made to order. There are models with a front part that does not need to be hidden behind the facade. In this case, the layout of the dishwasher is significantly simplified.

Dimensions
When choosing such equipment, many people pay attention to its size, because it is very important to first determine whether it will suit your interior. This is a narrow model, its width is only 45 cm. Height adjustment allows you to integrate the Siemens SR 64E002 dishwasher into a ready-made kitchen, without the need to do anything to order.

It is for this placement option that built-in dishwashers are valued. After all, they can be easily placed even in a small kitchen and at the same time this will not affect the freedom of space in any way. But still, it is advisable before purchasing a particular model to select a place for its installation and take all the necessary measurements. Only then will you be able to place the equipment in such a way that it will seem as if it has always been there. This model’s dimensions are perfect for any kitchen, so the rating will be maximum – 10 points.
The cost of such equipment is quite high, yet it is specific in its own way and is not particularly in demand on the market. In order to purchase this model from Siemens you will need to pay about 35,000 rubles. But such a purchase will save time and allow you and your family members to pay more attention to each other. Once you buy such a kitchen helper, you will forget for a long time about the need to wash dishes every day. But, given the high-profile brand, the price is somewhat high - you can choose cheaper equipment. Therefore, the score for this item is only 7 points.
Completing the installation
When the communications are connected, we attach a steam protection on the underside of the tabletop: a metal or plastic plate or glue a film - depending on what is included in the kit. In the desktop version, for example, nothing is provided, so we make it ourselves from scrap materials. Next, we connect the dishwasher to the water supply, sewerage, and electricity. Then we “push” the equipment into place.
Horizontal alignment is required. This stage should be taken seriously; the quality of the wash and the duration of operation depend on the quality of the installation. For this purpose, threaded legs are provided. For built-in models, the front ones are freely accessible, the back is usually one - with an adjusting screw, also accessible from the front. It is implemented on almost all models, from prestigious Bosch to less popular brands. For aesthetic reasons, it is necessary to eliminate the gap at the top - the machine is raised to the tabletop and only after that the set is leveled in all positions and planes.
In principle, that’s all – you can do a test run and evaluate the quality of the connection. The final stage for built-in models is hanging the front door from the set. There is a template for this:
We put it “in place” on the dishwasher door. We transfer it to the back side of the facade door and make markings. We mark the holes for the screws with an awl or drill. We degrease the areas for the double-sided self-adhesive facade fasteners and attach the seal. We combine - we put the facade on the dishwasher door. Carefully open it and secure it with 1 self-tapping screw. We close it, evaluate the position of the façade, and adjust it if necessary. We open it and fasten the façade diagonally with a second self-tapping screw. Again, we make sure that the position is correct and tighten the remaining screws - we secure them completely.
After this, we adjust the built-in dishwasher - we clarify the position in the plane of the remaining facades of the set. If the design provides for it, we fasten it with self-tapping screws to the headset and install the base - in most cases it requires trimming it from above.
At this point, the installation of the dishwasher is completely completed. Obviously, you can do everything yourself with a minimal set of tools. Additional difficulties can only be caused by the aesthetics of the kitchen set itself.
Water drainage
Once everything is prepared, you can begin connecting the machine to the sewer system. To do this, you need to install a siphon equipped with a fitting and connect a drain hose to the latter. This, at first glance, simple procedure for organizing a drain requires compliance with two important conditions.
The first condition is that you need to make an upper bend, as shown in the image below, this will prevent water from entering the sink bowl into the PMM.
Illustration of performing an upper bend
The second condition is that the elbow of the water seal on the drain should be as deep as possible with a short bend. This is done to ensure that air from the sewer system does not enter the device. If you do not install a water seal, the dishes may have an unpleasant characteristic odor after washing. The correct water seal is shown below.
An example of organizing a water seal
We do not recommend implementing the method of organizing a drain from a stationary PMM directly into a sink, since the load on the pump increases significantly. We will not even consider options for connecting directly to the sewer, since this is absolutely wrong.
Types of facades, functions
The facade for PMM is decorative cladding that harmonizes with kitchen furniture. Attaches to the car door. MDF panels are practical and durable. They can be laminated, covered with colored film, attached with original fittings and various decorative elements. Hanging chipboard or PVC is a big risk. These materials are easily deformed by vibration, high temperature, and moisture.
Sheathing functions:
- Simplifying the choice of technology. You don’t have to worry about the color of the case, but focus on the technical characteristics, since the dishwasher won’t be visible anyway.
- Child protection. A car hidden behind the door will not become a “victim” of children's curiosity.
- Noise isolation. An additional panel absorbs noise. German built-in models, such as Siemens, Bosch, Miele, Hansa, are equipped with special noise-absorbing gaskets that are inserted between the door and the front panel.
Types of fastenings
The casing can be attached to the door with self-tapping screws (option for fully built-in models), or secured on hinges (for partially built-in models). Slider mounts are often used in Gorenje, Ikea, Electrolux, and Beko modifications.
Sheathing dimensions
Depends on the dimensions of the PMM. The standard width of the machine is 60 cm (full size), 45 cm (narrow). The common height is 82 cm. Dimensions may differ greatly from standards. We recommend purchasing the set after purchasing a dishwasher. So that it can fit perfectly under the countertop and lock into place. For example, Ikea kitchens fit all models of dishwashers; they sell custom-made household appliances. If the façade is larger than the door, it will rest against the plinth when opened.
