Proper serving is always a sign of attention to guests, a way to create a festive atmosphere, and also an indicator of the artistic taste of the hostess.
- In this material we will look at the rules of informal serving, that is, those that are appropriate for receiving guests at home in everyday life and on holidays.
- Serving at home depends on the occasion, time of day, theme and menu, but in all cases the purpose of serving is the same - to arrange the dishes and cutlery so that it is convenient and pleasant for the diners to eat.
Based on this goal, table setting rules were invented. In everyday life, all these canons need to be observed only on the most solemn occasions, but once you have mastered their essence, you will be able to set the table with your own hands for any occasion - from a romantic dinner to a family New Year celebration.
Before you begin, take a look at two sample table settings. As you can see, setting a home holiday table for guests is much easier than setting a formal reception!
So, how to set the table? We have compiled step-by-step instructions in a certain sequence, describing each of the stages. In short, the most convenient procedure is as follows:
- Tablecloth – Plates – Cutlery – Glasses – Napkins – Decor (vase with flowers, candles, themed decorations).
Keep in mind that a few days before the event you need to resolve all organizational issues and prepare:
- Decide on the number of people, create a menu, tidy up the tablecloth, check the quantity and quality of napkins, dishes, cutlery, and think about the decor.
On the day of receiving guests, wipe all dishes and cutlery clean, and then start setting the table.

Sequence of table setting
The table should be set according to the following plan: tablecloth; dishes; cutlery; glasses, wine glasses, glasses; napkins; table decoration. To begin with, table setting may seem like a really complicated science to some, but after some time, when setting the table according to the rules becomes a habit, it will seem to you that this task is easier than ever!
The tablecloth must be perfectly ironed and have a presentable appearance. There is nothing good about setting the table with a crumpled tablecloth or oilcloth. The smoothed tablecloth, or rather its corners, should fall opposite the table legs, covering them evenly.
Breakfast
A beautifully set table can turn breakfast into a small celebration.
Appliances are added and removed depending on the dishes prepared
They start with the tablecloth. It should be clean, ironed and suitable in style to the interior. For breakfast, bright and muted colors are acceptable.
Then the plates are placed. Place a serving plate at a distance of 2.5 cm from the edge of the table, a main plate on it, and then a deep bowl for porridge or cereal. On the left, diagonally, a dessert plate with a butter knife is placed, and egg cups on small saucers are placed on it.
The next step is instruments. To the left of the main plate, place a fork with the teeth up, to the right - a knife (with the tip inward), a tablespoon, and then a teaspoon. Dessert cutlery is placed above the plate, parallel to the edge of the table.
Table setting at home. Simple breakfast
Next are cups and glasses. A cup for a hot drink is placed on a saucer and placed to the right diagonally from the main plate. The glasses are placed a little further. Their number is determined as needed. Correct order: glass for water, juice, then milk.
In the center of the table there is a coffee pot, a milk jug, rosettes with jam and saucers with slices of fruit. Granulated sugar is served in a sugar bowl with a special spoon, and tongs are used for refined sugar. Oil dishes, poachers and snacks are also placed here.
Cheese and bacon served on a cutting board or plate along with cutlery
Complete the serving with napkins and decorations. Cloth napkins are placed on or next to the snack plate; paper napkins are placed only in napkin holders. Small vases with flowers are placed in the center of the table - they create a special mood.
An unusually set table will be a pleasant surprise for your household and will certainly not allow them to miss breakfast

How to hold a spoon correctly
The spoon should lie on the hand with its convex side facing the table, the handle in place between the index and thumb, its thinnest part at the very end of the index phalanx, held with the tip of the thumb.
It is preferable to constantly give it a horizontal position, not allowing the elbows to participate in the process, only the hands.
Arranging cutlery
Cutlery should be 10mm apart from each other and the plate.
• The fork is on the left and the knife is on the right, as is the spoon. • The fork should be with its teeth up and the knife with the blade facing the plate. • If there are more than three dishes on the menu, then you do not need to lay out all the cutlery; they should be taken out when needed. • With the plate there should be a fork and a knife, after them for fish, then a knife and fork for various salads. • A spoon can be placed instead of a fish fork.
Features of choosing beautiful plates
When choosing plates for the holiday table, first of all you need to pay attention to the following points.
Tableware requires a special approach in terms of proper placement.
Plates made from these materials are beautiful and environmentally friendly, although they do not withstand mechanical stress well.
Advice! If you plan to use dishes every day, then you should take a closer look at plates made of heat-resistant glass. They can be heated in a microwave oven, and these containers are also quite durable.
- Color. For adherents of the classics, we can recommend pure white dishes. Food on white plates always looks attractive. For youth parties, colored dishes are suitable, and for special events where people of different ages will be present - white with an unobtrusive pattern or thin gilding.
For a hall or room in the Provence style, plates with a characteristic floral pattern in purple, blue, and lilac tones would be good.
- Form. Round or oval containers are not the only option for a feast. Nowadays you can buy dishes of various shapes.
Dinner
Dinner is served according to the same principle. The table is covered with a well-ironed tablecloth: for a formal dinner, choose a plain one; for a family or friendly dinner, choose a tablecloth with a pattern or border around the edges.
You can replace the serving plate with a round mat, which will serve a decorative function
You can turn the glasses upside down if you are setting the table in advance or outdoors. This is what restaurants located on the street do.
The main dish, appetizer and fish plate are placed on the serving plate. On the left diagonally there is space for a bread and dessert plate (it is served directly with dessert and fruit). For a home dinner in a narrow circle, 1-2 plates are enough, for example, a main plate and a snack plate.
Serving a light dinner
The number of utensils is determined by the number of dishes. The order is the same: on the right is a table knife for hot dishes, followed by fish and snack knives. A tablespoon is placed above the main plate (if there is dessert, the spoon is moved to the right knife, and dessert utensils are placed above the plate). Forks are placed on the left: closer to the plate there is a fork for hot food, then a fork for fish and then a fork. All dishes and snacks that are not served individually are served with tongs and spoons.
Classic dinner setting
In most countries, the following order of dishes is accepted at official dinners: appetizers, soup (broth), fish dish, meat dish, dessert, fruit, coffee. Dishes are changed every 15-20 minutes.
Table setting at home. Scheme for dinner
Glasses and glasses for drinks are placed to the right of the main plate in the order in which drinks are served: for water, for aperitifs, for wines, for spirits. The glass for the main drink remains on the table throughout the meal, the rest can be removed when changing dishes.
For an everyday dinner and meeting with friends, 1-3 glasses are enough: for water, for wine or beer, for strong alcohol. The beer glass is placed on a stand to protect the tablecloth from beer foam.
For dinner with friends or a party at the dacha, the table can be set in a more democratic home style
Dishes with hot dishes, salads and snacks are placed in the center of the table, and closer to the edge of the table - a bread box, sauce boats, jugs and bottles of drinks.
Napkins for dinner can be decorated with special rings or folded into shapes.
