Hurry up and start reading today’s issue and then you will learn in detail about how and what you can use to make wreaths for the New Year and Christmas.
In addition to doors, wreaths can be hung on walls and shelves.
What do we need
Christmas or New Year's wreaths can be made from anything: from branches and cones, from tinsel, felt, paper, balls and burlap, sweets and vines.
It makes absolutely no difference which design you choose, it’s a matter of your taste, imagination and availability of available materials.
The most important thing is that the creation process gives you a festive mood and brightens up the anticipation of the celebration. Involve children in creativity and you will not only get a unique creation, but also spend time together for good.
Stock up:
- The basis. There are several options for what it can be: from cardboard, polystyrene foam, a metal clothes hanger, or a ready-made wire hanger specifically for these purposes;
- Scissors;
- Glue gun;
- Various decor.
Think in advance about how you will mount or where to place the finished product: if you want to hang it on the door, it is definitely important to attach some kind of fastening, for example, tape.
Prepare a workplace where you will feel comfortable and spacious to work. It is advisable to cover it with newspaper or paper so that glue and dirt from branches and cones do not spoil the surface. Well, are you ready to create?
Go!
Fixation
The finished craft looks great on the front door. To do this, you will need to build special hangers with suction cups, with which you can easily secure the craft.
This is easy to do - a maximum of two hooks to hook the top and bottom of the decoration. It’s easier to take high-quality double-sided tape that will securely fasten your creation in the right place.If you are the happy owner of a door peephole, then you can secure the product in another way. Tie a long piece of fishing line to the wreath, and then throw it over the door, thread it through the peephole and tie it to the beginning of the fishing line.
You can also make two wreaths of the same size and tie them with rope or decorative ribbon. By throwing one wreath over the door, you will get a doubly beautiful decoration.
Now you know how to create one of the main decorations for the winter holidays, and you can create a festive atmosphere and a bright mood in your home.
New Year's wreath of pine cones
Pine cones are an ideal natural decoration that can be used for a New Year's theme in any way you like. But a wreath made from pine cones turns out so natural, fragrant, and fabulous.
You will need:
- Base made of strong wire (hangers;
- Jute twine;
- Glue gun;
- Christmas tree garland (optional);
- Pine cones: from 60 to 75 pcs. sort them into groups: large, medium, small, 20-25 in each.
Let's get to work.
First, you need to wrap the metal base with twine for better adhesion between the cones and the base. Walk the twine around the entire perimeter of the circle.
Now you can move on to gluing the cones. Start with the outer radius and the largest buds. Apply glue to the twine using a hot gun and immediately press the pine cone on top, hold for a few seconds until it hardens. Don't skimp on the glue!
Once the outer circle is completely covered in pine cones, move on to the middle level and size. Place the pine cones as close together as possible to avoid leaving gaps. However, don’t worry if there is still free space somewhere, we will fill it with additional decor later.
It's time to move on to small details that can complete the inner circle.
After all the cones are glued, you can use your imagination and decorate the wreath to your taste.
Fill the free space between the cones with coniferous branches: pine, fir, cypress, cedar. This way you will get a chic wreath of branches and cones, and to make it even brighter, add viburnum or rowan berries - it will be a chic decoration.
Berries can be replaced with an LED garland.
Here is our luxurious wreath of pine cones is ready. Now you can hang it on the door, wall, place it on a table or cabinet, and place a candle in the center of the composition.
Tips from needlewomen
A wreath made of tinsel seems to be a very simple craft, the creation process of which has no difficulties. But experienced craftswomen can still give some advice:
- To prevent unsightly cardboard from showing through the decor, the base can be painted green with acrylic paints or gouache.
- To give the tinsel the look of snow-covered fir branches, you can buy rain with light tips or sprinkle the finished work with artificial snow.
- The craft will delight not only with its appearance, but also with its aroma if you apply a few drops of pine aroma oil to it.
- A product of small diameter can not only be hung on a door or wall, but also used to create a horizontal composition with candles.
Do not leave a lit element unattended to avoid a fire.
DIY New Year's wreath made of tinsel
It will take you no more than 5 minutes to create such beauty.
You will need a round foam base and 3-5 m of tinsel. For a lush and voluminous product, choose a thicker “rain”.
Secure the end of the tinsel in the middle of the circle using a glue gun and wrap evenly around the entire base. If the entire perimeter of the circle is filled, and there is still a length of tinsel left, wrap around the second circle.
Materials and tools for work
Depending on the chosen craft model, you need to select materials. You will need a round base. It can be plastic, metal, foam, wood, or you can assemble it from spruce branches.
Decoration will also come in handy: bells, ribbons, pine cones, candles, artificial snow. Tools: regular and garden scissors, pliers, glue gun, wire, thread.
New Year's wreath made of felt
Blanks: foam circle, green felt, scissors, pins, hot glue and red felt wool balls.
Instructions:
Cut out felt leaves that are approximately the same size. To do this, you can prepare a stencil.
Fold the sheet in half and insert a pin into the base.
Insert a pin into the wreath shape so that all the leaves point in the same direction.
Repeat until the wreath is full.
Use hot glue to attach the red felted wool balls.
Another option for a felt product:
You will need felt balls and an embroidery hoop.
Glue the balls to the base one by one using hot glue.
From balls of yarn
A wreath made from balls of yarn is an unusual and labor-intensive creation. To make it you will need a solid base and a sufficient number of foam balls. On each of them, you need to wind a certain amount of yarn so that the balls begin to resemble balls of thread.
It is important to secure the end of each thread. Using hot glue, you need to glue the “balls” to the base. It is best to use yarn of no more than three colors.
If there are not enough foam balls, you can use Christmas balls, which you can simply alternate with “balls”, or you can wrap them with yarn. The craft turns out bright and rich - you shouldn’t use too much decor. A few textile snowflakes or ribbons will be enough.
DIY New Year's wreath made of paper
A great idea for co-creation with children. This product made from paper loops will serve you for a long time and will be an original decoration for the holidays.
Necessary materials:
- 6 sheets of A4 paper of different colors;
- 2 dark green sheets for the base;
- Glue or double-sided tape;
- Scissors.
Instructions:
Cut each of the 6 sheets of paper into equal strips.
Next, each strip must be folded in half and its ends secured with glue or tape.
Cut out the base circle.
Attach the loops to the base using glue or tape. They should be placed fairly close to each other.
Continue filling the entire circle with loops.
Made from cardboard tapes
A very simple and elegant example is made from ribbons. To do the work, take a thick sheet of cardboard. A round base resembling a donut is cut out of it. Next - according to your imagination.
You can simply wrap the base with ribbons. You can first string the ribbons onto a thread and make an “accordion” - this will make the wreath more voluminous.
You can secure the tapes with pins, threads or hot glue. Flowers made from ribbons and beads are suitable as decoration. You can also wrap the foam base with ribbons - this will make the wreath more voluminous.
And by playing with the colors of the ribbons and the decor, you can use the wreath for year-round use - decorating it for the spring holidays or using the gifts of autumn.
New Year's wreath made of fir branches
Perhaps this is the most authentic type of wreath of all those we have discussed here. Such beauty can be a full-fledged replacement for a Christmas tree, if suddenly you don’t want to bother with it.
Before making the wreath, trim the tip of each branch at an angle and soak them in a bucket of water for 24 hours to freshen the foliage and extend the life of the wreath. If the cut has dry areas or jagged edges, you can trim them back.
Decorative items can include ribbons, bows, artificial birds, painted twigs, dried seeds, Christmas ornaments and whatever else you want.
- Trim the branches into manageable pieces. Be sure to remove all bare branches and dead spots to ensure the final product looks as full as possible.
- Place the wreath form on a flat surface with the concave side facing up. Twist a few pieces of florist's wire around the crosspieces to keep them from slipping.
- Place the branch on the base. I recommend using evergreens with large needles (such as pine) first. If all your branches are the same size, use the variety you have the most.
- Wrap the green wire around the branch and secure it to the base.
- Place another branch so that it covers the bottom of the first branch. Secure with wire.
- Continue laying out the branches and make sure they are all moving in the same direction.
Turn the pan over from time to time to make sure nothing falls out.
- Once the wreath form is filled, gather and secure any loose or overhanging parts with wire.
- Once the wreath is covered with your evergreen base, add other plants or any decorations.
Autumn wreath
A handmade autumn wreath can decorate your front door or window. Sometimes it is placed in the center of the dining table, and several small candles are placed inside. From their warmth, natural materials emit a pleasant forest aroma, which adds charm to the festive feast.
What tools and materials will be needed:
- a piece of red polymer clay;
- clear acrylic varnish;
- black acrylic paint;
- transparent glue;
- thin brushes for painting;
- toothpicks;
- a coil of thin copper wire;
- green floral wire;
- sisal;
- baking foil;
- acorns;
- large yellowed leaves;
- willow branches.
Algorithm of actions:
- Roll several small balls from polymer clay, imitating rowan berries.
- Use a toothpick to squeeze out a star on each berry.
- Roll the foil into a small oval. Stick toothpicks with strung berries into it. Dry the pieces in the oven at 50 degrees for an hour.
- Remove the berries and let cool. Using a thin brush, paint over the extruded “stars” with black.
- Drop transparent glue into the recesses left by the toothpicks and secure pieces of green floral wire about 6 cm long inside.
- Then you need to twist the wire, forming berry bunches. 1 bunch can contain from 4 to 7 berries.
- Coat each berry with varnish using brushes.
- Wash the leaves, dry and coat with acrylic varnish.
- Sometimes acorns fall to the ground losing their caps. They can be assembled separately and then attached with glue. Coat all acorns with varnish.
- Before weaving, you should make breaks on the branches every 3 cm, without damaging the bark. This step will help make the branches softer and more pliable.
- Weaving is done in a circle. The ends of the first branches should be held with your fingers. You can secure them with wire. First, a circle is formed from the thickest branches, then thinner ones are placed on top of them.
- Berry bunches need to be woven in a circle, at a short distance from each other.
- Acorns are attached to the branches using transparent glue.
- By analogy, you need to fix several leaves.
The number of decorative elements depends on the taste and wishes of the master.
Finally, the wreath is decorated with sisal. Now you can use it to decorate any room.
DIY New Year's wreath made of balls
This option is quick and easy to do. You need to find a wire hanger and use pliers to bend it into a circle-like shape. Also stock up on Christmas tree balls of different sizes. You will need 50-60 pieces. The rest of the decor is optional.
You need to string all the balls onto the wire. Alternate them according to size, color and texture. For strength, you can fasten the balls here and there with hot glue.
You can complete the wreath with a beautiful composition of a pine twig with a pine cone.
Process of creation
If there is no blank for the frame, then we take the wire (rods) and connect it into a circle of the required diameter. For volume, you can wrap paper on top.
Almost everyone can find an old and dusty artificial fir tree at home, from which you can separate voluminous branches and combine them into small bouquets. Then attach them to the base with wire or thread so that the lush bouquets overlap each other, completely covering the frame.
An alternative would be to wrap the branches around the base. In this way we fill the entire circle and get a beautiful Christmas “Christmas tree circle”.
New Year's wreath made of burlap
Necessary materials:
- 2 rolls of burlap;
- Wire base for a wreath;
- Floral wire;
- Additional decor.
Start by folding your burlap in half. Select one part of the wire wreath where the beginning will be. Pass the tip of the roll through the wreath. Pull it in a wavy pattern under each turn of wire. Leave a small loose end for tucking.
Now it’s time to move in the opposite direction using the same pattern, pulling the burlap under and over each turn of the base. Don't tighten too tightly. The matter should flow freely, forming soft waves.
Wrap the entire wire base in this manner, securing where necessary with hot glue.
Now you can hang bright elements, such as artificial berries and twigs, on the burlap wreath.
Christmas wreath
Ready-made Christmas wreaths are similar to New Year's ones, but the algorithm of actions and the set of materials are slightly different.
What you will need for work:
- straw wreath blank;
- Christmas balls;
- artificial bunches of rowan;
- red satin ribbon;
- pine cones of different sizes;
- thin spruce branches;
- thick pine legs;
- scissors;
- floral wire;
- red and gold decorative flowers.
Algorithm of actions:
- You can buy the base or make it yourself. Wrap dry grass in cling film and secure with tape.
- Assemble a base of pine branches, placing their needles up. Attach them to the workpiece, tightening it tightly with floral wire.
- Fill all the gaps with spruce branches. They can be fixed with wire or hot glue.
- If the branches become very brittle, you can wrap them with wire again.
- Tie a lush bow from a red ribbon. Burn the edges with a lighter and secure the bow with glue at the top of the wreath.
- Secure the pine cones.
- Flowers for decoration should be alternated with each other. For example: 1 red, 1 white, red again. Secure the berry bunches between the flowers.
The Christmas wreath is ready. The decor can be supplemented with paper angel figurines.
DIY New Year's wreath made of grapevine
All you need is pruning shears, scissors and some twine.
Gather 4-5 pieces of branch or wood, with all ends cut off.
Holding the bundle near the cut ends, bend it in a circle. Leave about a quarter of the branches sticking out at the end of the circle.
Holding the wreath firmly where the circle joins, reach your other hand through the wreath, grab the extra branches and pull them through, wrapping them around the wreath.
Continue repeating the process until the Christmas wreath reaches the size you want. The wreath is held together with bunches of twigs wrapped around it, but you can also tie it with twine if you prefer.
You can add decorations, lights, greenery or flowers - or keep it simple.
History of origin
There are several theories about the origin of the wreath. In ancient times, pagans made them from twigs, nuts, and berries. But a more common version says that the German theologian invented the wreath so that his students could determine the time of the beginning of Christmas.
He decorated his wheel, carved from wood, with red and white candles. Day after day, he lit a candle, and when the last red one remained, the children realized that a bright holiday was coming.
Product made from branches
Such consumables can be easily found in any yard and supplemented at your discretion.
First, build a base out of cardboard. Cut out a circle with a diameter of 25 cm.
Now you can glue the sticks. Start with the longer ones, filling the entire space evenly with them. Then insert shorter ones.
Make pom poms from yarn. To make a small pom pom, simply wrap some yarn around a fork, then tie a knot in the middle of the fork (including all the loops you made). Remove the loops from the fork and cut them off with sharp scissors. Trim and fluff the pom pom until you are happy with how it looks.
Once you have enough pom poms to cover the inner circle of the wreath, glue them in place.
Interesting Facts
The round shape of the wreath has a certain meaning. It reflects the presence of God, seasonality (change of seasons), faith, hope.
In ancient times, a wreath was used to decorate a door as a symbol of victory, emphasizing the status of the owner in society.
