Handmade furniture is becoming increasingly popular. Factory options often turn out to be of poor quality, inconvenient and unsuitable for the parameters required by the customer. When assembling furniture with your own hands, you can choose high-quality material, give it any shape, make the required dimensions and select the fittings you like. In addition, the cost of furniture is significantly less than its final cost from the seller. The main task in making furniture is to choose the right material and carefully study all stages of furniture assembly.
Possible difficulties at work
The process of assembling a bed itself is not difficult for a person who has already worked with metal before. You must have basic skills in cutting and welding metal, drilling holes in it, and fastening bolts. If you do not have such skills, it is better to practice in advance on individual pipes, rehearsing their cutting and welding.
The fact is that the bed is a three-dimensional structure, all parts of which are easy to assemble separately, but installing them together can create some difficulties. For example, welding the last corner is considered the most difficult step in assembling a frame. At the same time, three corners are already ready, the structure is quite weighty and voluminous.
Another challenge is painting the bed. All its sides should look aesthetically pleasing. To do this, you either need to paint each part separately, which will take a lot of time, and then dry all the parts and only then assemble them. Or you can paint the finished structure, but then you will have to protect the slats, if any, as well as the floor, walls and surrounding surfaces from paint.
A beginner in assembling furniture may encounter problems such as a lack of necessary parts, lack of necessary tools, and incorrectly selected dimensions of each part. For example, there is a danger of cutting off a larger section of pipe than necessary. The part will already be damaged.
Section No. 4: sheathing
The steel “skeleton” is certainly very strong and stable, but it cannot be called particularly beautiful. It lacks coziness, and I used particle board to give it to the finished structure. For the purpose of decoration, this material will cope quite well, since the load-bearing functions have been removed from it.
Range of laminated particle boards with finished edges
My actions:
Scope of work on decorating a metal bed
- I screwed elongated thin laminated chipboard panels to the sides of the frame with M6 furniture bolts 7 cm long . At the same time, their finished edges were raised above the structure by several centimeters, due to which small walls were formed;
- A wider panel was similarly attached to the front part of the frame in such a way that its lower edge dropped almost to the floor;
- At the back, where the pillows would presumably lie, I installed a wide canvas, which also forms the headboard of the bed;
I recommend pre-upholstering the back panel with foam rubber and covering it with fabric. This will make it much more convenient for you to lean on it during operation.
- placed an orthopedic mattress in the resulting box , on which all the work on assembling the bed from a profile pipe was completed.
Frame covered with laminated chipboard panels, with an orthopedic mattress placed inside
Of course, you can choose other materials for cladding, or even leave the steel uncovered and simply decorate it using other methods. Everything is in your hands, and the manifestation of originality in this case is only welcome.
A profile pipe can make an aesthetically pleasing bed even without particle board covering

The production of metal products of this type has come a long way compared to the last century. The types of systems are very diverse and differ both in their purpose and in the number of sleeping places (tiers), and the design dimensions and design also have many differences.
Factory-made metal beds are most often intended for two categories of people: children and adults. Depending on who the design is intended for, it has its own features and characteristics.
Kinds
Depending on the installation method and shape, headboards come in two types: with an inclined back and a simple vertical panel design.
Among the advantages of the panel, one can highlight the saving of space in the room (unlike an inclined backrest, when used, the length of the bed increases, taking up additional space on the floor, a straight panel takes up only non-functional space on the wall).
The inclined headboard can be made manually from a wooden profile up to 20 mm thick or from a chipboard profile. Details are drawn on the sheet, blanks are cut out, which are carefully sanded and smoothed with a file. All parts are fastened together using wooden dowels and epoxy glue.
After checking the strength of the gluing, you can begin finishing the structure: use both self-adhesive decorative wood-like film and cladding panels and upholstery fabrics. The backrest is attached to the bed frame using screws or bolts with nuts.
DIY metal loft bed
Here we show how to make a do-it-yourself loft bed from metal pipes for a children's room. Basic frame and structural fittings are used as support. A great option to maximize space. Under the bed is an ideal place for a table. The two sides of the bed frame are attached to wall studs, so you just need to find support for the corner. Stairs can also serve as structural support. You can see the main fastening details in the gallery with step-by-step photos. Read the full instructions describing the procedure for assembling a loft bed with your own hands on the website.

Loft bed with metal post
This loft bed option is ideal for a boy.
Featuring a metal stand that can be used as a fireman's pole, a convenient table underneath, and a climbing wall, the industrial style will appeal to any boy. The instructions that you can read on the website do not indicate the exact dimensions for this bed because it is made to fit the specific space and decor of the author's room.

Folding table made of profile pipe
There are many versions of this style of table, but you can make it more modern. This table has folding legs made of profile pipe and a top made of solid wood that folds easily. Of course, you can design and build a table to suit your space, so all materials should be tailored to what's available to you. After you look at the step-by-step photos and start planning how to make a folding table from a profile pipe, it is advisable to visit the website of the author of this project (link below) and watch the video.
3d modeling. Usually in any design it all starts with sketches to refine your idea, but since this table is already well established in design, we can go straight to CAD (computer aided design and drafting) to get the dimensions we need. You need a 1350mm long top , 600mm wide and 700mm working height from the ground. So this is actually the only tricky part (where CAD is useful) and it determines how long the legs should be. This will depend on the planned height and the angle of the legs. Here the angle is approximately 12 degrees, and therefore if you want the height to be approximately 700 mm, the length of the legs should be 613 mm.
Then set the height of the lower shelves - here they are at a distance of 100 mm from the floor, and the width is determined by the distance between the corners of the legs. Then mark the dimensions on the materials. The author of the project used 20 mm mild steel and wood approximately 20 mm thick after processing. When starting assembly, start by dividing the profile pipes into parts and cutting them with a grinder.
Then clamp the pieces into position and glue on both sides. You need to make four frames.
Connect the two pairs of frames by welding the hinges on top, and then sand the flat seams with a file. When finished welding, apply 2 coats of clean spray paint. This will be useful for metal in a low humidity area. Basically, this entire process can be replaced with wooden parts instead of metal pipes if you don't have access to welding.
When preparing the wood, use a template to prevent the boards from bending when gluing.
Then prepare the boards. It depends on the condition of the wood, if necessary, cut to size and sand. If you bought ready-made ones, you can start assembling. For ease of gluing, pair the boards first and then glue them all together. Once the glue has dried, cut the top to length. Then sand and treat with Danish oil to highlight the natural texture and create a durable matte finish.
The final step is to install clamps to secure the shelves to the metal trestle frame. The clamps are made from 25mm angle iron. This used four clamps on the outer corners of the shelves, sandwiched between the table and the bottom clamp. The clamps on the underside of the table work a little easier, they simply fit into the slots at the top of the scaffold.

Types of metal bed designs
The number of metal bed options on the market can satisfy any request.
Two types of structures can be distinguished:
- Forged. Their base consists entirely of pipes. They are relatively light: the weight is always no more than 50–55 kg. There are two types of forging: cold and hot. In the first case, a person does practically nothing: the machine does everything necessary, so the assembly is vaguely reminiscent of stamping. If we are talking about another method, then the master does the main work. It heats metal products to a temperature of 600 degrees, after which, during forging, it gives the necessary shapes to the parts.
- Welded. The main difference from the previous type is the method of connecting the parts, i.e. welding.
Preparing for work
If you want to create something unique, but don’t want to spend a lot of money, you can try to assemble the bed yourself. To do this, you need to prepare consumables, tools, calculate dimensions, and draw a drawing.

Materials and tools
List of required tools:
- welding machine with electrodes;
- grinder with metal discs;
- measuring instruments, building level;
- drill with a set of drills;
- file, hammer, pliers;
- different types of sandpaper;
- varnish, paint for metal;
- brushes of different sizes.
Required materials:
- metal corners;
- channels, reinforcement of different sections;
- square profile pipes;
- steel tubes.
Before assembling the shaped structure, the pipes must be bent. To do this, the material is preheated to high temperatures, then bent on special hand-held machines that you can make yourself.
Sizing
The dimensions of a homemade bed should be chosen depending on the dimensions of the mattress. Typical sizes of mattresses that can be found in the store are 190, 195, 200, 205 cm in length. Width: 80, 90, 120, 140, 180, 200 cm.

Drawings and diagrams
To accurately calculate the amount of consumables for assembling a homemade metal bed, you need to prepare a drawing. It must indicate:
- length, width, height of the frame;
- main parts;
- connection points.
The drawing helps to more accurately visualize the future structure and present it in conjunction with other interior elements.
Varieties
All metal double beds are divided into two types: forged and stamped. They differ in the manufacturing method, materials used, and cost. What are the features and advantages of each option:
- Stamped products come off the factory assembly line, that is, they are mass-produced products. For their manufacture, iron is mainly used, and sometimes alloys of brass or copper are used. The structure is assembled from hollow tubes and a profile with a thickness of 1.5 mm. The main advantage of finished products is their lightness, while the weight they can withstand reaches 200 kilograms.
- Forged beds are made by hand. This is a piece product that is made according to individual or ready-made sketches, often made to order. This method involves high heat treatment of the metal, which adds additional strength to it. Forged products can also easily withstand weights of over 200 kilograms. Each model is unique in its own way, revealing the individual handwriting of the master.
The cost of the product is directly affected by the manufacturing method; it is clear that handmade work is always valued more highly. In addition, the metal used to make the bed is important.

Section No. 2: preparatory work
Before starting the assembly itself, I did a number of preliminary steps, for which I needed the following supplies:
Name | Purpose |
Paper and pencil | Create a drawing |
Angle grinder | Cutting pipes and processing their ends |
Drill | Drilling the required holes |
Acetone | Removing factory grease |
And here are the steps themselves:
Schematic instructions for preparatory work
- First of all, I made a drawing with an exact indication of all dimensions . This will be your guide in all future work, so give it due attention. In addition, if you are not very familiar with descriptive geometry, then keep in mind that the Internet is full of ready-made diagrams that can be used in their original form or after making your own adjustments;
Example of a suitable drawing showing all the necessary data
- I purchased pipes with the following parameters:
Purpose | Section, mm | Wall thickness, mm |
Creating Basic Structural Elements | 60 to 30 | 2 |
Creating auxiliary structural elements | 40 to 20 | 1,5 |
Pipes with a rectangular cross-section 60 by 30 mm
- I took a “grinder” and cut the required number of sections from solid pipe pieces in accordance with the drawn up drawing;
In order for the cuts to be as smooth as possible, I recommend fixing the angle grinder in a special device, as shown in the photo below. Such equipment is sold in construction stores.
A grinder securely fixed in the machine will make even cuts
- Then I changed the cutting wheel on the grinder to a flap grinder and carefully processed the ends of the created workpieces with it in order to remove burrs;
Example of a flap wheel
- Next, I took acetone, soaked a rag in it and wiped the surface of all the pipes, removing the factory grease. If this is not done, then it will be inconvenient to assemble the structure, and it will not be possible to paint it at all;
- Now I took up the drill and drilled the necessary holes , also strictly adhering to the drawing diagram. If you plan to cook the frame, then of course this step is eliminated.
Advantages and disadvantages of iron models
Like any other material, metal has its own set of advantages and disadvantages. Speaking about the advantages of a metal frame, first of all it is worth mentioning that metal beds are as durable and reliable as possible in comparison with models made from other materials. This bed prevents loosening and is as wear-resistant as possible. In addition to wear resistance, we can say that metal has the ability to withstand any load, which is why double beds with a forged frame are so popular.
Metal is a non-flammable material, which means it is as safe as possible for use in an apartment; in addition, this material is absolutely hypoallergenic and environmentally friendly. An additional positive quality of these models is the huge range of design options; you can choose the appropriate design for almost any interior solution.
Today there are many types of metal beds.
All of them can be divided into several classifications:
- For example, all models can be divided by class into economy and luxury models. They will differ in the quality of the material, the method of applying the dye and, of course, the price.
- According to their shape, all models can be divided into standard ones - these are ordinary rectangular models of various sizes, as well as non-standard ones. This type includes models such as round, square or other unusual design solutions.
- By the number of seats, the most common options are: single, double, and king size or triple.
- In addition, the beds can be divided into groups according to the owner. This can be a model for adults, as well as for children. Such beds will differ primarily in size and shape. Children's models, as a rule, are produced with three backs or are also equipped with a fourth for very young children.
- There are models that will become real helpers in small rooms; they can provide a comfortable sleep, but do not take up much space, as they can be transformed into other interior items. So, a folding bed can rise towards the wall and turn into a closet. A pouf bed can easily be transformed from a full bed into a small pouf on which you can sit, and a sofa bed is an ideal folding model that can transform from a seating area into a double full bed. In addition, many models have a roll-out system for storing linen and other things.
- Beds may differ in the material of the base of the niche with the mattress. For example, an orthopedic model most often has a base made of wooden slats - lamellas; there are also models with laminated chipboard, as well as with a metal armored mesh, however, they are becoming increasingly rare. The reinforced model has a metal frame at the base, to which the base for the mattress is attached.
- The design of the bed model can be either consisting of one type of material or combined, for example, with a metal frame and a wooden headboard. In addition, the wooden back can have a carved structure, which will allow the bed to be used in various interiors.
Wide selection of materials for making a bed with a headboard
A variety of materials are used in the production of beds, such as wood, metal, fibreboard, chipboard, MDF. The list of raw materials for making headboards is even longer. This factor makes it much easier to create a backrest yourself. Most popular materials:
The headboard can be made of one material or be combined from several
- natural wood opens up many possibilities for realizing your imagination; you can use both smooth polished boards and rough forms of wood with knots and snags;
- particle boards and plywood are used to create shaped headboards or as decorative panels;
- plastic can also be used to decorate a panel headboard; this option does not require additional accessories and is used in minimalist style directions;
- laminate is also used as panels, which allows you to create an original room design;
- metal is a classic of the genre when it comes to the design of a bed headboard; forged products are most often found in the design of a classic interior;
- mosaic and stone are used as an alternative to forged products in classical and ethnic styles;
Most often, headboards are made of wood materials, metal, leather or fabric.
- almost any textile (from simple cotton, satin to exquisite plush and velvet) is quite often used to decorate beds, thereby adding coziness and comfort to the atmosphere of the room;
- genuine leather is an element of luxury; a more budget-friendly alternative is eco-leather; with the help of these materials, harmonious and stylish interiors are created.
You can also use mirrors, paintings, and decorative moldings to create a bed headboard. Photos of various options clearly demonstrate this.
Tips for choosing
When choosing a beautiful and comfortable single bed, you must rely on the following criteria:
Price. Solid wood products are high quality and environmentally friendly. However, such options are quite expensive
If you don’t want to overpay for a natural wooden bed, you should pay attention to economy class models - made of iron, MDF and chipboard.
Size. You need to first measure the bedroom so that you can choose a bed of suitable dimensions
For a small apartment, a compact model is suitable, not burdened with unnecessary decorative details (sides, shelves, cabinets, etc.).
Design. The appearance of the bed should be in harmony with the interior of the bedroom and not stand out from the overall ensemble. Simple and beautiful furniture in a positive color is ideal for a children's bedroom. There is no need to burden such a space with a luxurious bed in an elaborate design.
Manufacturer. High-quality and durable single beds are produced not only by domestic ones, but also by Belarusian, Italian factories, and manufacturers from Malaysia. The most expensive are Malaysian and Italian designer models. These imported products are made from natural wood and have stunning designs.
Take into account a variety of nuances. Only in this case will you be completely satisfied with the purchase.
Now it's time to start decorating the product.
If pine boards are used to assemble the product, then there is no need to use stain. Due to the high resin content, pine may change its appearance - called tiger stripes will appear on it. It is enough to treat wood of this type with varnish.
If the master plans to upholster the bed with soft fabric, then for the work he will need the appropriate material, a furniture stapler, and staples. It is advisable to place thin foam rubber under the fabric and attach it with curly nails. You can cover not only the external, but also the internal elements of a wooden structure with fabric, this will reduce the likelihood of contamination of the mattress.
Advantages disadvantages
Wrought iron interiors have always been prized. In all ages. Distinguished by its reliability, elegance, and smooth lines, metal furniture has become an excellent solution to many modern design problems.
Iron products have a number of advantages:
- Resistant to scratches and damage. Strength and durability are not affected by temperature changes.
- They can withstand increased loads, which is important for buyers of any weight, even overweight.
- Match various modern interior design styles.
- Environmental friendliness of metal products.
- Increased stability, difficult to move to the side.
Minor disadvantages of metal furniture:
- Not resistant to moisture (periodically needs to be painted so that rust does not spoil the aesthetic appearance or destroy the structure of the product).
- Metal is cold to the touch. Many people don't like it.
We approach the production of bedroom furniture responsibly. So that later when buying a mattress there will be no unforeseen problems.
What tools and materials are needed
First, you should make a sketch drawing and decide on the size and type of the future bed. It is advisable that you already have a mattress available before starting work. Knowing the actual size of the mattress, you will need to adjust the parameters of the bed frame.
In order for a homemade wooden bed to please you with its quality and beauty, you need to prepare high-quality source material:
- planed timber 40 x 50 mm;
- planed edged board 100 x 22 mm;
- furniture glue;
- wood screws;
- steel corners;
- stain, colorless varnish;
All these materials can be purchased at a large hardware store.
When purchasing wood materials, you need to pay attention to the presence of chips and through knots.
This material should not be purchased and used to make a wooden bed yourself. To work with wood you will need:
- electric hand drill;
- wooden carpentry corner;
- electric hand grinder;
- tape measure, pencil, chisel.
You should strictly adhere to safety requirements when working with hand-held power tools. The workplace for assembling furniture should have sufficient lighting and the room should be well ventilated.
Dimensions
The dimensions of standard beds include three main dimensions - width, length and height of the bed. Thus, there are 4 main groups of size ranges based on width. The width depends on the number of people using the bed and on their build:
- Single models. These beds are ideal for a small apartment, studio apartment, for one adult or child. The width of single models ranges from 70 to 90 cm.
- One-and-a-half-sleeper. The most comfortable models for one adult. The width of such models usually ranges from 100 to 140 cm.
- Beds with a larger width from 150 to 200 cm are double models.
- Models with increased bed width. Here the width exceeds 200 cm and such options have a name - king size beds.
As for the length of a standard bed, it can range from 160 cm for teenage models to 200-220 cm for adults. The correct selection of the required length will be facilitated by a special formula, in which the length of the bed will consist of the height of the sleeper and 20-30 cm of reserve. Thus, among the most common bed options, the following bed sizes are found: 800x1900 mm, 90x190, 90x200, 120x190, 120x200, 140x190, 140x200, 160x200 cm. There are also models with non-round intermediate sizes, they fit well into non-standard designs: 1450x650, 1650x1950, 1450x1950 mm and others. The two-story structure can withstand the same dimensions, regardless of the floor, the beds have a standard size, like regular stationary options.
The last dimension of a sleeping area is its height. There are three main options for measuring height:
- Low. Here the height will range from 20 to 40 cm; it should be borne in mind that these models are not suitable for an elderly person and people with joint problems, since this will be too low and uncomfortable, which, if there are certain problems, can provoke their development. However, a healthy person should not be afraid of such a height and can safely choose a low bed for an interior in Japanese style or minimalism.
- Medium height, most comfortable and suitable for any person. This height ranges from 40 to 60 cm. If you stand at the edge of the bed, the correct average height should reach just to the middle of the kneecap.
- High. It has a height of 70 to 90 cm. Not the most convenient option, however, it looks very advantageous, which allows you to neglect a certain degree of convenience for the sake of a beautiful interior.
Manufacturing process
Before you begin assembling the individual parts of a homemade metal bed, you need to prepare consumables for connecting them. To do this, you need to cut metal parts according to the dimensions indicated in the drawing. Sand the ends with sandpaper. After this, you can begin assembly.
Frame and base
When the details of the future structure are ready, you can begin assembling the base and frame. Assembly steps:
- Lay out the cut channels, angles, profiled pipes, and fasteners.
- Align the parts relative to each other so that the angles between them are 90°. In this case, you need to use a special corner. After alignment, the parts must be welded together.
- Drill holes in the frame for attaching the brackets.
- Weld the legs to the base. They can be made from large diameter fittings or sections of pipes. To prevent the metal from scratching the flooring, you need to attach rubber pads to the ends of the legs.
The assembly of the frame is completed, you can proceed to making the headboard.
Double bed frame (Photo: Instagram / industrialloftspb)
Headboard
Manufacturing process:
- To create a headboard you will need a solid pipe. Several separate cross members need to be welded to it at an angle of 90°.
- When the crossbars are ready, side posts are welded to the end of the upper pipe, which are attached to the bed frame from below.
Assembly
When the headboard and frame are ready, you can begin the general assembly of the bed:
- Weld the bases with the headboard.
- Weld the legs to the bottom of the frame.
- Install the inner part of the frame. It will consist of metal jumpers on which the mattress will later rest. The more jumpers, the better.
After completing the assembly, you need to process the joints of the individual parts of the structure. To do this, you can use a file, sandpaper, or sanding machine.
It is important to go through all joints to get rid of irregularities and metal burrs

No. 2. Bed frame design
The bed consists of a base where the mattress is placed, and a frame on which the base rests. The frame may include headboard and footboard backs, supports (legs, podium) and drawers (these are the side panels of the bed).
The frame can be one of these two types:
- two supporting backs and two side drawers;
- four drawers and one or two hanging backs. The supports in this case are legs or wheels.
It is difficult to say for sure which type of frame is better. If the bed is made of high quality, then it will in any case be durable, and low-quality specimens will soon begin to creak. However, samples with supporting backs perform slightly better than models with legs. Supports of a larger area break much less often than legs, but a bed with legs looks more airy and weightless.
Assembly diagram for children's version
In general, a crib for a baby is assembled in the same order as an adult, albeit with a few subtleties. Cots for babies come in several types and have two levels of support for the mattress, parts that allow the cradle to be rocked, as well as additional drawers or a changing table with a chest of drawers.
In order to assemble a bed for a baby yourself, you need a drawing or design, design details, a screwdriver, screws and plugs.
- first we assemble the parts of the fixed fence together
- we attach the movable part of the side grille and install the bottom itself
- we fasten the structure with screws or confirmats
Lastly, we install the wheels on the legs or parts of the pendulum that allow the cradle to swing.
If the crib is equipped with a chest of drawers or a drawer, then it is time to assemble the structure according to the diagram or sketch. First the drawers, then the base, check the correct assembly and install the retractable hinges. Secure the drawers to the hinges. And you can use it with pleasure.
Cribs are a bit more difficult to assemble
Iron beds
Home > Home interior > Iron beds
The iron bed immediately evokes associations with the unpretentious interior of the times of socialism. Such beds were everywhere - in kindergartens, in pioneer camps, in hospitals. institutions, in army barracks.
Whoever tried to jump on the spring mesh of such a bed lost a piece of his childhood. A folding bed is also a type of metal bed that has taken root well in Khrushchev-era buildings and dormitories. But it turns out that the metal iron bed was not invented in the USSR, but much earlier. The first iron beds probably appeared in ancient Greece during another crisis.
The fashion for iron beds has come and gone many times. In old Europe, metal beds took root due to the fact that there was nowhere for bedbugs to hide in them. It was, so to speak, hygienic furniture. In addition, the iron bed had the necessary strength and it was believed that it gave the man “iron” strength in bed. Some beds were made by master blacksmiths and were an excellent interior decoration.
A metal bed can be associated with English, French, Italian or Mediterranean style. Goes well with decorative textiles, textured walls, and voluminous cornices.
The brass bed “Brass bed”, made at the end of the 19th century in Europe, is really good and beautiful furniture:
The fashion for metal beds increased in Europe at the beginning of the 20th century, during the era of aviation and automobiles. But in the second half of the century, the wooden bed again took its place. The beginning of the new 21st century is reviving the lost positions of iron “bed making”. These beautiful metal masterpieces began to be in demand and appear in stores in Europe:

Features of professional pipes
Corrugated pipe is a material that has a high hardness index, but is easy to process even at home. It has many advantages that allow it to be considered one of the most popular and frequently used. But there are also some disadvantages that must be taken into account when making products from professional pipes with your own hands.
Manufacturing process
Before you start manufacturing any structure, you need to study the production technology of profile pipes. This process is carried out on an industrial scale in specialized enterprises. However, if you have the necessary equipment, you can make a small batch yourself.
This video shows how to make a swing from a profile pipe:
Procedure for creating source material:
- The metal sheet is unwound and leveled.
- A cylindrical product is formed from it.
- After this, the workpiece is welded using a seamless method.
- Once the finished pipe is cooled to a certain temperature, it is given the desired size.
- At the next stage of work, it straightens.
- At the very end, the pipe is cut into pieces of the required length and undergoes heat treatment.
Main advantages
To choose what can be made from a profile pipe, you need to take into account the features of working with it and the main advantages. Thanks to this, you can choose the highest quality material that is suitable for a specific type of product.
The strength of the future structure depends on the quality of the selected profile pipes.
The advantages of a professional pipe include:
- Very high strength values. Thanks to them, it is possible to produce structures that must withstand enormous loads and not deform under their influence.
- Cheapness. Despite the many manufacturing stages, corrugated pipes have a relatively low cost and can be afforded even by financially strapped builders.
- Ease of processing and installation. The easiest way to connect two profile pipes together is by welding. However, they do not require special pre-treatment.
- High reliability. This type of product goes through many stages of heat treatment, so it becomes incredibly strong. Thanks to this, structures made from them are distinguished by their reliability.
- Durability. With proper care and appropriate corrosion protection, this material can last for decades. At the same time, it will remain just as durable and retain all its characteristics.
Profile pipes are protected from corrosion, which makes them a very durable material
Negative sides
In addition to the large number of positive aspects of professional pipes, there are also negative ones. All of them are in one way or another associated with financial costs and difficulties of manufacturing at home. The disadvantages include the following:
- The need to use expensive equipment to create pipes yourself.
- The whole process requires large free areas.
- High weight of finished products.
What is a bed base?
The base serves as a support for the mattress. A person’s sleep depends on how well it is chosen. In general, an error in selection affects the strength and performance capabilities of the model, even if the best orthopedic mattress is selected.
Metal, wood or particle boards (chipboards) are used to make the frame or bed base. The standard sizes of a double bed are: width – 1.4–2 m, length – 2–2.2 m. For single models: width – within 0.7–0.9 m, length – 1.9–2 m. Children's beds are made with a sleeping area of 0.7 x 1.8 m. Today, it is also not difficult to order furniture from manufacturers, providing your dimensions.
The following types of bases exist:
- in the form of a solid board glued together from sheets of plywood or wooden boards;
- frame with transverse wooden slats of different widths.

Manufacturing slatted bases is more difficult and expensive. Manufacturers use different methods for securing slats. Concave-shaped wooden slats are connected to the frame next to each other in the middle and on the sides. They softly spring and thereby improve the orthopedic qualities of the mattress.
To understand which bed base is better (slats or plywood/chipboard), consider the characteristics of the orthopedic base:
- The materials for such bases are wood and metal. For the frame, MDF is often used, which is reinforced in several places. The upholstery of the headboard is made of natural or eco-leather. The frame to which the lamellas are attached is assembled from metal pipes of round or rectangular cross-section, its diameter is about 15 mm, so it is very strong and reliable.
- The slats are wide (5–12 mm) or narrow (3–4 mm), made of laminated wood and attached 5–7 mm apart to the frame.
- The lamellas are fastened using lath holders, the material for which is rubber, plastic or metal. High-quality fittings securely hold the slats, allowing them to slightly absorb the weight of a person. They are not fixed rigidly, but can bend slightly to create an orthopedic effect.
- More expensive bed models are equipped with plastic pads to increase rigidity.
Typically, approximately 15 wooden slats are used to make the base. Beech is considered the best material for them. The rigidity of the sleeping area depends on the distance between the slats.
Bed assembly instructions
Having in front of you a working drawing for making a bed from boards yourself, step by step you need to follow the proposed instructions:
First you need to assemble the frame so that the internal dimensions of the rectangle match the size of the mattress. The bars are coated with furniture glue and connected to each other with screws.
With the help of a carpenter's corner it will be possible to maintain the right angle of the frame. In the center of the short side of the rectangle you need to install a crossbar made of timber. This will help prevent the central part of the bed from sagging in the future.
Now the timber legs are attached to the inside of the frame. For greater stability of the structure, a fifth leg made of the same timber is installed in the center. The leg is made from two bars connected with glue. In this case, one block is made with a bevel of 30 degrees to the surface of the base.
The bars are tightened with a clamp, excess glue is removed from the surface with a rag. After the glue has dried, use a steel angle to connect the side walls of the frame and the legs with screws.
The inside of the rectangular frame is covered with edged planed boards. Before this operation, the boards should be carefully treated with a sanding machine so that the surface does not have any roughness. The boards are laid on the frame's fixing strip and secured with screws, leaving a gap of twenty millimeters for ventilation of the mattress.
The headboard is made from edged boards. You can attach the head of the bed firmly to the wall or hang it from the frame on hinges. A reliable option would be to attach it to the frame using screws. The boards of the headboard can be attached to the bars at intervals of fifty millimeters, this will make the entire structure presentable.
The next stage of assembly is coating with stain and clear varnish. The surface should be coated with varnish several times to achieve the desired result. After covering the first layer, you need to wait until it dries completely and sand the entire surface with a sander.
How to choose furniture?
The choice must be taken with full responsibility, because such a purchase usually involves long-term use:
The first thing you need to pay attention to is, of course, the size of the bed. For a child, sizes can be specially reduced
For the youngest, the length can be 90-100 centimeters, for older children the length can reach 160 centimeters, for teenagers and adults the most correct size would be a bed with a length of 190-200 centimeters. In any case, the following formula will help you choose based on this parameter: human height + 30 cm = ideal length of a sleeping place.
- As for the width, there is no specific formula, however, this parameter can be easily determined experimentally. To do this, you need to lie down on a bed, turn to your side and bend your knees. If the legs remain on the bed and the knees do not protrude beyond the edge, then this width is correct and most suitable. If we highlight the most popular options, then among single beds this width is 90 cm; for double beds the most popular option, which is suitable for most people and fits into the dimensions of standard Russian rooms, is 160 cm.
- Another important criterion for a successful purchase is the right choice of mattress. It is this that will allow you to create the most convenient and comfortable place to sleep. It will help get rid of lack of sleep and spinal problems caused by sedentary work and inconvenient sleep. A mattress must be expensive; you absolutely cannot skimp on this component. You need to choose a mattress with hypoallergenic filling, especially for a children's room.
So, a mattress with coconut fiber will be as hard as possible, and latex and holofiber in the composition, on the contrary, will soften it. The mattress cover should contain the maximum percentage of cotton in its composition, so that the linen will not slip, air will easily pass through the material, and dust will not linger in it. In addition, you can choose a special mattress cover that will protect the mattress cover: for children, there are mattress covers with different prints, often different for girls and boys.
The bed frame may also be a selection criterion. The most convenient and durable options are those where the base consists of wooden slats, which must be located at an equal distance from each other. Another convenient and most durable option is a base made of metal tubes soldered to the frame frame; such a base is most often used in metal models.
How to make your own hard backrest?
If you decide to make the headboard of the bed yourself, then the first thing you need to decide on is the material from which the frame will be made, upholstery materials, appearance and rigidity. Hard headboards are made from wood, laminate, prefabricated wall panels, plastic, metal and even ceramic. If you choose a wooden headboard without facing materials, then the finishing version of the product should be smooth, even, without cracks or natural depressions in the wood.
To make a hard wooden headboard you will need:
- wooden base up to 20 mm thick;
- fastening elements (bolts, nuts, screws, hinges);
- a sheet of sandpaper;
- electric drill;
- wood pencil;
- screwdriver;
- hammer;
- construction tape.
First, you need to draw a sketch on the wooden profile of the future product with a simple pencil and mark the points where the fastener holes will be located.
After this, carefully checking all the dimensions, cut the product along the contour, make holes (two or more for each side).
Carefully sand all roughness using sandpaper. If desired, the product blank can be varnished. After the surface has completely dried, this structure is attached to the bed frame using self-tapping screws or bolts, or hung on hinges on the bedside wall.
How much does it weigh?
The weight of metal models directly depends on the size, the number of sleeping places on the bed, and the chosen method of creating the model. Depending on the design and additional decor, the weight of the final product may also change.
A fairly heavy design can be both an advantage and a disadvantage of a sleeping place. High weight ensures a strong structure as well as stability. The bed will not move on the floor as if it were made of chipboard. And the same weight can also be a disadvantage; the bed will be difficult to move in space, and if it needs to be transported to another apartment, you will need special companies involved in freight transportation. At the same time, metal versions can withstand loads of up to 300 kilograms.
The simplest forged models without special decoration can weigh from 20 to 50 kg. Double models with voluminous decor, additional elements, and special design solutions can reach a weight of 100 kilograms or more.
How to make a forged product
Here are the main stages of the work:
Executing work processes in order is important to obtain a positive result
Create a sketch or drawing
Take the dimensions seriously, this is important for making the correct adjustments to the equipment and calculating the required amount of material. Creating patterns is not limited by your imagination, but by what tools you use. Counting and purchasing materials
Don't get carried away with patterns made from thick rods. The cold forging method is not omnipotent. Manufacturing of elements. The error is difficult to correct, be extremely careful. Fastening parts. When welding thin-walled tubes, do not overdo it; holes in them are burned very easily. Final processing. We sand the product and paint it. You can prime it with automotive primer and then apply high-quality paint.
Metal bed design and production technology
Typical frame for a metal bed.
If we talk about modern factory production of metal beds, they are manufactured at metal processing enterprises, furniture companies, as well as in private workshops that have the ability to produce forged furniture.
- The materials for making beds are straight-seam thin-walled pipes, various kinds of rods and wire. They can be made of brass, iron, carbon steel or galvanized metal.
- There are two main methods for manufacturing metal structures: welded and forged. The use of welding involves the connection of component parts under the influence of high temperature and the use of solder.
- The forging method can be carried out using both hot and cold methods. Cold manufacturing is performed from metal blanks on a special conveyor press under high pressure. In this way, the desired shape of the part is achieved. And the hot method involves heating to a certain temperature and then giving it the desired shape using a hammer. This procedure is performed manually or using mechanics.
- The final stage of manufacturing work includes the finishing process. This is the application of a polymer coating that gives the surface of the product color and performs a protective function. Typically, powder paint is used for these purposes. What does this treatment give? Firstly, it is resistant to corrosion processes, secondly, it prevents the occurrence of fungal infections, and thirdly, the metal acquires an attractive appearance.

What parts are included in a metal structure? This:
A metal bunk bed would be an excellent option for a child's room.
- frame;
- backrests;
- frame and base;
- legs;
- fasteners.
The frame for a metal bed is most often made in the shape of a rectangle, but sometimes, although quite rarely, you can also find a round version. The frame (base) is filled with: a mesh made of steel wire, lamellas (again made of metal), springs and wooden battens.
The bed legs (supports) are placed at the corners of the base. As for the headboards, the options may vary. Sometimes it is one back, and sometimes two. The backrest located at the head of the bed is usually higher in height than the backrest at the feet.
How to design a table from a profile pipe
For finishing work on homemade furniture made from steel profiles and wood, the same set of materials is almost always used.
Metal parts are painted with a dark varnish that imitates powder paint or blued coating. This recognized style and technique allows not only to decorate the metal, but also to effectively protect black steel from corrosion.
For wood, furniture polishes, varnishes, and toners are used. Almost always they strive to preserve the pattern of wood fibers, to make it more expressive and rich.
Paints and plastics for wood in combination with a profile pipe are practically not used. Even if the countertop is lined with plastic, the surface is sealed with a film with a pattern that imitates valuable wood species.
Styles
Thanks to the abundance of different options, a metal bed can fit into almost any style of space. You just have to choose the right backrest design and the right accessories.
You can fit a metal bed into a retro style, Provence or any other:
- Modern styles of minimalism, hi-tech, loft accept the simplest models with straight crossbars on the back, which form something like a lattice. Such a bed can be made in white, black or steel colors, and in addition it is acceptable to use bright accents in the form of pillows or bedspreads.
- White metal beds with patterned headboards will help add romance to the room; a light canopy in light colors will be an excellent addition here.
- Exquisite ornamentation, rich decor, and the colors of noble metals will be an excellent option for a bedroom in the Art Nouveau or Baroque style.
Color solutions
First of all, you need to be guided by how wrought iron beds will look in the bedroom interior, as shown in the photo. Traditionally, metal is painted black, bronze or gray. But sometimes you can find pink, red, silver, lilac or emerald colors.
The pastel colors of the decoration will remind you of the spirit of romantic France.
The most popular coloring of ordinary metal is more noble shades: gold, bronze or silver plated.
Curves that gracefully intertwine with each other look good.
Finishing
To give the bed a noble appearance, finishing is carried out. An anti-corrosion coating is applied to the metal, all seams are cleaned of slag using a metal brush or grinder .
Next, the product is polished and primed. Primer treatment improves the adhesion of paints and varnishes to surfaces. Next, the product is varnished or painted. The choice of paint largely depends on the overall interior.
If the room is designed in a high-tech or minimalist style, you should give preference to monochrome colors. For classic motifs, dark or light shades are more suitable.

Conclusion
Now we know how to choose the right bed for the bedroom.
- First, let’s make sure of the strength of its frame and the reliability of the fasteners.
- Only environmentally friendly materials are acceptable, for this we will familiarize ourselves with the certificate.
- A guarantee of assembly and subsequent operation is required.
When choosing a bed, let's lie down on it. If at the same time it does not creak or crack, and we feel free, then the frame and foundation are good. If it’s easy for us to turn over, the mattress is suitable for us (see also the article “Pelmets for the bedroom: models and useful tips for choosing them”).

Painting the finished structure
After the metal bed is assembled, it is necessary to begin work on preparing its decorative design. There are a huge number of decoration options. Typically, metal structures are painted; the color is selected based on the general situation. To do this you need to follow these simple steps:
Scheme for painting metal with a brush.
- The metal surface is cleaned with a special hard brush and then processed with a grinding machine. This allows you to remove traces of slag from the surface, making it even and smooth.
- For a flat surface, special discs are used, the thickness of which is greater than that of standard cutting discs; all of them are designed to withstand lateral loads. With the help of such discs, even the most convex welds are perfectly removed.
- After the initial processing is completed, it is necessary to finely grind the metal and polish all surfaces of the bed. The quality of preparation for painting will depend on this.
Any color can be used for painting, but attention should be paid to the overall situation. For example, if the interior is modern and strict, then it is best to choose monochrome and soft shades for the bed.
If there are a large number of dark tones in the decoration, the bed is also painted with a dark paint and varnish composition.
Before painting, the metal should be coated with a layer of primer, which will ensure better adhesion of the paint to the surface of the structure. The primer mixture is selected of a type that is suitable for working with metal; the primer is applied with a brush. When this layer has dried, you need to sand the surface to remove all the irregularities.
Scheme for painting a metal bed with a spray gun.
It is recommended to paint a metal bed using an airbrush, setting the diameter of the torch to the required size. In this case, the painting will be completed in the shortest possible time, it will turn out to be of high quality, and paint consumption will be reduced several times. But if you don’t have an airbrush, you can paint the structure with a thin brush. The number of layers is 2-3, the thickness of each should not be too large. You need to choose only a high-quality brush, otherwise during work hairs will fall out of it, which will greatly spoil the appearance of the furniture. Each layer must dry before applying the next one. If necessary, apply a layer of varnish after the paint has dried.
When using polymer coatings to paint a bed, the sequence of work will be as follows:
- coating with liquid cold zinc;
- pre-impregnation;
- primer layer;
- a layer of paint, which is a mixture of acrylic and polymer fluorine-containing rubber;
- a layer of printed inks (acrylic and polymer);
- finishing layer of acrylic-polymer paint.
