The bed plays an important role in the life of any person. The choice of design should be approached with all responsibility. A comfortable sleeping place is the key to sound sleep, reliable support for the spine and a guarantee of good health. Today there are many design options, the cost of which depends on the type, shape and material of the product. If you want to save money, you can make the bed yourself.

Making a bed yourself will allow you to create a unique model that matches the design of the room in which it will be located.

Bed design: components of the bed

The main elements of any type of bed are the frame and base. The design has two side panels and two supporting walls or two side panels and one supporting wall. The bed does not have to be equipped with side elements; it can stand on four legs, the height of which varies from 20 cm.

The main elements of the bed design are the frame and the base

If the product rests on the side walls, drawers for storing linen are usually located under the mattress. They can slide out from the side of the structure, or the storage area opens up by lifting the mattress from the foot side. This mechanism is called gas lift.

A do-it-yourself bed frame is represented by a box consisting of two supporting backrests with drawers or four load-bearing side panels with hinged backrests. In the case of the second option, the design includes wooden or metal legs.

A base is attached to the frame, which serves as a support for the mattress. The element can be made in the form of a spring structure, a metal mesh, a slatted movable or fixed base. The most popular are slatted bed bottoms in the form of slats, which are characterized by strength, reliability, convenience and durability. They are made from birch or beech.

The headboard can be rectangular, round, curved or any other shape, or may be absent

Important! The more slats the bed base is equipped with, the stronger and more durable the structure.

The headboard is a decorative element. It can be flat, curved, solid, openwork, wicker, lattice, vertical, inclined, upholstered in fabric or leather, decorated with carvings or paintings, as demonstrated by photos of do-it-yourself beds made of wood.

The presence of a footboard is determined by the model of the bed. Many people prefer products without this element, which does not create a barrier for the legs, which is especially important for a tall person.

When choosing a height for a future bed, you should also consider the size of the mattress

Mattress

Most beds are sold complete with a mattress, but there are situations when the mattress has to be purchased separately. When choosing, you should decide which option you need.

  • Anatomical. These mattresses take the shape of your body. With the right density, they perfectly support the body, pressing only at certain points. Such mattresses are the most common.
  • Orthopedic. It is characterized by increased rigidity and provides excellent support to the spine. Recommended for people who have back or spine problems.

To correctly answer the question of how to choose a double bed, you need to take into account the fillings. The following groups are distinguished:

  • springless;
  • spring.

The best option would be to use mattresses based on a spring block; it can be dependent or independent. An independent spring block is considered the most convenient and safe for the spine.

When choosing a mattress, it is worth remembering the following rules.

  • If the weight of one of the spouses is more than 40 kilograms, it is worth choosing an anatomical mattress.
  • Pay attention to hardness; for young people, a hard mattress is better; the older the users, the softer the bed should be.
  • If you have problems with the spine, you should give preference to the orthopedic variety.

What material can a bed frame be made from?

The bed frame can be made of wood, metal, MDF, chipboard or rattan. Wood is still the most popular. This is due to its high technical and operational characteristics. The material is durable, environmentally friendly and durable. Wooden products have a presentable and luxurious appearance.

Elite expensive products are made of mahogany or teak wood. More affordable beds are made from solid beech, oak, ash, pine, cherry, alder or birch. The specific type of wood determines the cost of the structure. A bed made of logs looks unusual and original.

A metal bed is not only durable and wear-resistant, but can also become a bedroom decoration

Chipboard or MDF are also often used to make beds. This is due to the affordable cost of the material compared to the price of solid wood. Pressed wood slabs are distinguished by a rich color palette. The surface can be plain or imitating wood shades.

The disadvantage of the material is some toxicity, which occurs due to the presence of formaldehyde in the composition of the products. There are also options for plywood beds, characterized by strength and durability.

Metal beds have firmly established themselves in modern interiors. The material is characterized by high strength, wear resistance and durability. Metal structures are made with gilding or silver, imitate the appearance of an aged product, and can be covered with leather or fabric. Such designs fit perfectly into rooms decorated in country, modern or high-tech styles.

Material selection

Question of choice
Materials for making a bed:

  1. Metal corner.
  2. Profile or round pipe.
  3. Solid wood.
  4. Plywood.
  5. Chipboard.
  6. Pallets.

The above materials can be used either individually or in combination. Thus, a metal bed can be equipped with wooden backs, and a plywood product is assembled on a frame made of timber. There can be many options, and you can understand this in more detail by reading the article.

What are the sizes of double, single and one-and-a-half beds?

The dimensions of the sleeping place, which are indicated on the drawings of the beds, are selected based on the parameters of the person, the size of the room, the number of people who will sleep on it, and the specific habits of the owners. There are also two ways to measure the dimensions of a structure. In European countries, the metric system is used, i.e. the size of the product is indicated in meters. In the USA, UK and Australia the basic unit of measurement is feet.

Important! The dimensions of the bed and mattress should be calculated using the same measurement system, since meters may not correspond to feet.

Drawing of a single bed, where A – 50 cm, B – 98 cm, C – 211 cm, D – 66 cm, E – 21.5 cm, F – 7.5 cm

The length of the sleeping place should be selected taking into account the height of the person with a margin of at least 20 cm. The standard size of the product is in the range of 180-200 cm.

The width is selected based on the person’s physique and the number of people sleeping on the bed. Depending on this criterion, products can be single, double, one-and-a-half and children's.

The single-bed design is characterized by a standard width of 100-150 cm. Single-bed products are chosen by those who love space. Such designs will have a width of 120-160 cm. European manufacturers produce products with sizes up to 140 cm, and American ones - 120-137 cm.

Double bed sizes usually range from 140 to 160 cm wide

The double bed is 160 cm wide, which is enough to comfortably accommodate two people of average build. For thin owners of a sleeping bed, there are models characterized by a parameter of 140 cm. Those who like to spread their arms while sleeping are recommended to use a bed with a width of up to 200 cm.

The height of the bed can vary from 20 to 90 cm, depending on the type of structure. Low products are produced with a height of 20-30 cm, standard - 40-60 cm, high - 70-90 cm.

The latter design option is often installed in small rooms, where it is important to rationally use every centimeter of space. Here you can equip a spacious storage system in the under-bed area.

It is recommended to make the length of the bed 15-20 cm greater than the height of the person for whom it is made

The bed can have not only a rectangular, but also a round shape. The standard size of such a product is diameter 220 cm.

Useful tips

  • When choosing a bed, you need to carefully examine all the elements, including the mattress. Fasteners must be firmly connected. The surface must be smooth without visible scratches, chips or cracks. The coating in the form of paint or varnish should be uniform and without sagging.
  • It is very important that the bed is made from environmentally friendly materials. To confirm this fact, it is necessary to request a certificate of conformity from the seller, as well as a guarantee for the quality and assembly of the bed. It is very easy to check the strength of the bed and mattress; just lie down on the bed. In this case, the product should not make unpleasant sounds or squeaks. You should feel comfortable on the bed and fit comfortably on it. The mattress is suitable for you when your hand has difficulty getting between your back and the mattress itself. You should not choose a product that is too springy or soft, because the weight on such a product will not be distributed evenly.

  • For a mattress to last for a long time, it must be properly cared for. An innerspring mattress must be turned over several times a month to prevent it from becoming deformed. Turn the mattress over only with the help of special handles that will not cause the fabric to be pulled.
  • It is better not to turn foam products over. To ensure cleanliness, it is better to use covers that can be washed. Dust and accumulated lint are removed with a vacuum cleaner.
  • Spring mattresses should not be twisted or compressed. It is also not recommended to sit in the same place, otherwise dents may form. Sudden movements, as well as jumping, also render the mattress unusable.

DIY single bed made of wood

Making a single bed with your own hands at home begins with determining its dimensions. Most often, the structure has a width of 80-100 cm and a length of 200 cm. To make the frame, 25x4 cm boards are used. For the sides, elements should be 200 cm long, for the ends - 100 cm.

Experts recommend using glue to better strengthen the connection between parts and material.

How to make a bed out of wood with your own hands? Components of a structure can be connected in several ways. The simplest method is to fix the boards using self-tapping screws. To create a more durable structure, metal corners should be used.

The second option involves connecting elements using lugs and wooden spikes. The nests are made using a jigsaw or chisel. They should have a depth of 5 cm and a width of 2-3 cm. The prepared joints are lubricated with glue and assembled.

Important! The corners of the grooves should be aligned to 90 degrees.

The next step in making a single bed with your own hands is installing the slats. To do this, support strips are attached to the longitudinal beams of the structure, which must support the weight of a person. They are made from square wooden beams measuring 4x4 cm and are attached to the inside of the sidewalls using self-tapping screws.

Next, slats are fixed to these slats parallel to each other at the same distance using metal corners.

Helpful advice! You can use a sheet of plywood or thick boards as a base for the mattress.

Next, the headboard and footboard of the bed are made. For this purpose, furniture board, chipboard, and MDF are used. Products can have different configurations and heights. The final stage is the installation of the legs for the bed. They are usually made from logs or bars. Products can be a continuation of the vertical posts of the headboard and footboard of the bed. Their optimal height is 25 cm. They are attached using metal corners and self-tapping screws.

Material, types, stylistic direction

The external design of the beds is selected to match a certain interior style - when all the rooms are decorated in different styles, the beds are also purchased differently. It is important that the appearance of this piece of furniture matches the rest of the interior - bedside tables, wardrobe, dressing table, textiles on it - other fabric trim.

The design of children's beds will be different for girls and boys, babies and teenagers. For the little ones, miniature cradles and cribs with wooden rods are made. If there is more than one child, a two- to three-tier “building” is suitable. The colors of bed linen, blankets, and the structure itself for spacious rooms with windows facing south are chosen in dark, rich colors; if the room is small and the windows are narrow and face north, then warm, light shades are preferred.

Cribs are also differentiated by the availability of storage space. They are equipped with side drawers, drawers, sections, niches in which small items of clothing, books, bed linen, accessories, cosmetics, etc. are stored.

Upholstered

A crib, the back and base of which are upholstered in bright, textured fabric, is suitable for boho, Venetian, retro, and baroque styles.

Advantages of soft upholstery:

  • sound insulation;
  • cosiness;
  • sharp corners are hidden;
  • original accent;
  • many color solutions.

Minuses:

  • difficulty of cleaning;
  • volumetric structure;
  • high price.

Wrought iron beds

An elegant forged design will decorate interiors in the style of Art Nouveau, classic, Scandinavian, rougher ones - industrial, loft, brutalism, voluminous asymmetrical patterns painted in bright colors are suitable for futuristic interiors.

The design can be forged curls with anti-curls, monograms, plant elements, or simply straight vertical rods of various thicknesses connected at the top and bottom, and at the corners of the bed - smooth shiny balls and voluminous flowers. The design is as strong as possible and is difficult to loosen, which is most important for young married couples. Additional wooden elements will add softness to the interior.

Made from solid wood

A rough, good-quality bed will fit perfectly into a loft interior, modern, rustic, Scandinavian, Provence, and a more sophisticated one, with graceful legs, a carved back - English, Baroque, Gothic. The most commonly used:

  • oak;
  • nut;
  • beech;
  • wenge;
  • cedar;
  • hornbeam;
  • birch;
  • maple;
  • ash.

Craftsmen sometimes use timber from several types of wood at the same time or decorate the structure with veneer from many types - this is how a unique design is created.

Often the entire bedroom is decorated with wood - bed, wardrobe, bedside tables, etc.

With canopy

Suitable for expensive, luxurious interiors - classic, empire, art deco, shabby chic, country, African. Initially, it protected the sleeper from annoying insects in hot countries or from cold and drafts in northern countries. Modern canopies protect from daylight and partly from noise. The openwork canopy is knitted with your own hands using a hook or knitting needles, or woven from macrame. Thin, transparent textiles will allow you to create a romantic interior in an adult bedroom, and in a nursery - create a secluded place for each of the children.

The canopy is attached to a large or small, round or rectangular frame under the ceiling. It will add coziness to a huge bedroom with high ceilings, but will make a small one feel cramped. The canopy should also be washed frequently - it can collect a lot of dust, which can be dangerous for allergy sufferers. At the same time, the canopy also traps pollen flying from the street.

The canopy is often combined with a valance at the bottom of the bed; the dressing table is decorated in the same way, and less often – the wardrobe.

Hanging

The stock does not have to be firmly on the floor. The structure suspended from the ceiling will decorate an avant-garde, modern, grunge, or loft interior. It is attached to four ropes, cables, chains, and is capable of swinging, but is only suitable for spacious rooms in which there is enough space for “swinging” without fear of demolishing the surrounding furniture.

The convenience of this solution is that any restrictions on covering the floor disappear, because there is no pressure on it, but the ceiling is made as durable as possible. The design with a lifting mechanism is convenient for cramped rooms - during the day it is pulled to the ceiling, freeing up space, and at night it is lowered down.

With a protrusion at the base

The bed on the podium has a protrusion that extends far beyond the mattress - several tens of centimeters. The mattress itself is placed in a special slot in the middle. The pedestal itself contains drawers for storing bedding, underwear, etc. Another option is to insert a bed frame into an improvised podium, and the mattress itself into it.

The protrusion is covered with fabric or used as a table, and is decorated with an LED strip along the contour, which allows you to avoid injuries when moving in the dark. The platform is installed directly on the floor, being solid or on several low legs.

Folding built-in beds

This design is indispensable in one-room apartments, cramped studios where several people live. It will suit high-tech, minimalism, and modern styles. This bed is combined with a transforming wardrobe, where it is put away during the day and lowered at night. It is available as a single, one-and-a-half, or double.

The sofa bed also saves space, becoming a sleeping place for two people when unfolded, and used as a seat during the day. For children's rooms, a variety of designs with a sleeping place are created, allowing for maximum space saving for games and sports activities. The crib tilts away from the wall, pulls out from under the closet, transforms from a narrow sofa, is located at the very top, like an attic, etc.

When choosing, special attention is paid to the lifting mechanism, which should easily lift the bed to the wall. This is most important when decorating a nursery - the structure smoothly rises and falls with the press of one key, which is accessible even to a child.

Making a double bed with your own hands

Before assembling a double bed, you should measure the dimensions of the mattress. In this case, an element measuring 160x200 cm is taken as the basis. To manufacture the structure, you will need the following materials:

  • timber with a section of 50x50 mm - for making the frame and legs of the bed;
  • boards 30x30 mm - for support beams under the slatted base;
  • metal corner with a shelf width of 50 mm;
  • self-tapping screws 40-65 mm long.

The first step is to assemble a frame for the mattress, with internal dimensions of 170x210 cm and a height of 20 cm. Four beams are glued together on each side and held together with clamps. You should get two blanks 180 cm long and two 220 cm long. They are connected to each other into a lock. To do this, a 5 cm long recess is cut in the middle with a jigsaw on short elements. Tenons are made on long workpieces. To do this, 5 cm of timber is sawn off on both sides.

The formed grooves and spikes are coated with glue and connected at right angles. In the middle part of the frame, a longitudinal jumper with additional support is fixed using a metal corner. Legs made of timber 40 cm high are attached to the corners of the frame; glue and screws are used for this purpose.

Drawing of a double bed, where A – 40 cm, B – 147 cm, C – 205 cm, D – 82 cm, E – 13.8 cm, F – 5 cm

For structural reliability, the legs can be made of thicker timber. To give them an elegant shape, use a miter box to chamfer the inside at an angle of 45 degrees. To install the legs, use long bolts with heads and countersunk washers.

Helpful advice! To prevent deformation of the structure, it is recommended to place triangular inserts at the bottom of each corner.

Beams under the slatted base are attached along the long frame elements on the inside. Their upper edge (this is clearly visible in the drawing of a double bed) is located in the same plane with the upper edge of the lintel. Slats 170 cm long are made from boards 20x100 mm. They must be laid and secured across the lintels and longitudinal support beams in increments of 3 cm. The first and last elements must fit tightly to the front and rear walls of the bed frame.

Helpful advice! To prevent the slats from creaking, the elements should be made 1 cm shorter than the frame frame.

How to make a double bed with your own hands: making a headboard

After assembly, the frame should be sanded using medium-grain sandpaper. A stain is applied to the surface, after which the frame dries and is coated with several layers of varnish.

The wall-mounted headboard for a bunk bed is made of 3 boards measuring 25x100x1800 mm and 12 bars measuring 25x100x450 mm. For the first row, which will be in contact with the back, short products are used. Hidden fasteners are equipped on the reverse side. Metal plates are screwed to the appropriate places on the headboard using self-tapping screws. When hanging, their free edge will be inserted into the grooves of the tires.

A headboard can be the highlight of your bedroom.

You can make a soft headboard for a bed made of timber with your own hands, consisting of the following layers:

  • plywood or chipboard (1 cm);
  • foam rubber (3 cm);
  • batting;
  • upholstery fabric with a pattern.

A base measuring 45x180 cm is cut out of plywood. The edges should be chamfered, and then the edges should be carefully processed so as not to damage the batting and upholstery.

A blank matching in shape and dimensions is cut out of foam rubber or expanded polystyrene. It is applied to a wooden product, several holes are made for decorative buttons. The batting and upholstery fabric are cut according to the parameters of the workpiece with an allowance, the size of which should be equal to the sum of the thickness of all layers multiplied by two.

The foam rubber is glued to the wooden base. Batting is stretched over the workpiece, the folded edges of which are fixed with a furniture stapler. The number of staples can be unlimited, since they will still be invisible. The operation is repeated with the upholstery.

After sewing on the buttons, the finished headboard is hung on the wall

Helpful advice! To prevent the fabric from wrinkling, it must be ironed well and tensioned using a clamp, which is screwed to the middle of the workpiece.

The final stage is sewing on the sofa buttons using a large shoe needle and coarse thick thread. The upholstered headboard is hung on the wall using wall rails.

Design features

You can also have a good night's sleep on a comfortable orthopedic base with a mattress attached to the legs. But a “naked” bed will not be comfortable or attractive in appearance. For this reason, a bed frame has several significant advantages and minor disadvantages:

  • Aesthetic function is the most important for any frame. It disguises the frame of the bed (one might say the metal base), and is capable of hiding drawers intended for storing certain things;
  • On the frame there is a base where the mattress is placed. It is not designed to withstand the weight of the mattress and the person lying on it, does not transfer the load to the floor, and it does not have orthopedic qualities, but without it the bed will not be a full-fledged one;
  • Frame 160x200 cm can be used as a horizontal cabinet;
  • Sometimes it is made soft, this is important for families with small children;
  • If necessary, it can be replaced, for example, if it is damaged, or you can choose a product with a different design. Everything else - the base and the mattress laid on it - does not need to be changed;
  • This is the shell of the bed -
    its face, it is made of any material, it can have the desired color, or be made of fabric (upholstered with textiles). A bed without a frame is not without its drawbacks.

People can save some money and buy a good comfortable bed 1600x2000 mm, without a frame with a slatted bottom or mesh and a reliable metal or aluminum frame, but such a design cannot be a full replacement for a familiar bed with a beautiful finish.

When we say “frame”, we mean the safest design for a person - a leg or hand will not be able to get through and get stuck between the individual slats of the bottom, various (often necessary) objects will not be able to roll under the base, and the entire room with such a piece of furniture will sparkle with new shades.

How to make a round bed with your own hands

You can make a round bed with your own hands. It will be an unusual element of the room, capable of not only decorating it, but also solving the problematic issues of space with curved walls. In modern interiors, this design is installed in the center of a spacious room, giving it royal luxury.

A round bed is a non-standard solution for the bedroom

To create the base of a round homemade bed, a sheet of plywood 35 mm thick is used. The mattress is laid on it in such a way that no part of it overlaps the sheet. A round blank is cut out using a jigsaw along the outline, the front part of which is sanded. A cross-shaped frame with a diameter equal to the size of the plywood blank is made from 40x40 mm boards. The products are connected using self-tapping screws.

Helpful advice! To create wooden products, special wood screws with a large thread pitch are used.

Wooden blocks are attached to the edges of the cross, the length of which corresponds to the height of the structure. They are connected by a second floor of cross-shaped beams. Stiffening ribs are fixed between the legs.

The end part of the bed made of boards and plywood can be decorated with hardboard, which is attached around the perimeter using a stapler. Foam rubber is laid on top, which is covered with eco-leather. The surface is decorated with sofa buttons arranged in a checkerboard pattern.

Why do you need a headboard?

What determines the comfort of a bed? Of course, it depends on its design and mattress, no doubt. But the headboard also plays an important role in this. Why do we think this way? Well, firstly, this is confirmed by practice, a bed without a headboard is not so comfortable. So let's see what functions this headboard performs.

  1. It’s convenient: leaning on it, you can read a book or watch TV before going to bed.
  2. It prevents the pillow from sliding down; if you have a bed without a headboard, then you probably appreciated this.
  3. A headboard will prevent damage to the wall behind the bed.
  4. The headboard decorates the bedroom and gives the interior completeness.
  1. This is practical and functional - the headboard can be equipped with storage space, if it has shelves, then you can do without a bedside table - saving money and space.

The head of the bed is a very important element that helps our comfort and shapes the interior of the bedroom. Therefore, we devote this article to this important detail - the headboard.

How to make a podium for a bed with your own hands

Before you make a bed with a podium yourself, you need to decide on the installation location of the product. The space should allow drawers or a bed to be pulled out. A drawing of the finished structure is created, after which the corresponding markings are made on the walls and floor of the room.

Drawing for making a wooden podium bed with dimensions

Helpful advice! If the podium is located close to the wall, it is necessary to remove the baseboard in this place.

How to make a podium bed? To create the frame you will need a beam with a section of 50x50 mm. For rough finishing, chipboard or plywood with a thickness of at least 12 mm is used. Laminated chipboard is used for the finishing cladding of the structure. Drawers are made of plywood.

After all the elements are made according to the created drawing of the bed with your own hands, the structure is assembled. Vertical posts are attached to the floor along the perimeter of the future podium, which are fixed on 4 sides using galvanized corners and dowel nails. The height of the elements should be less than the height of the podium by the thickness of the timber used to make the frame.

After all the parts are made, the bed is assembled

If a double bed is created, a partition made of timber or boards is made in the middle, which rests on an additional row of posts. On top of the racks to create the top of the frame frame, it is necessary to lay beams, fix them with corners and wood screws. It is required that the racks be positioned strictly perpendicular to the floor, and their upper part must be in a horizontal plane.

DIY podium bed: the final stage

The next stage of making a podium bed with your own hands is making markings for the drawers. The slats that form their frames must be attached to the bottom of the posts. Partitions are attached to them. A base for the mattress is created, which is a lattice surface.

Then the podium is covered. If the bed is installed on it, then it is finished with laminated chipboard. To create a headboard, you can use furniture board, MDF or chipboard. This element is made in the form of a tall product that turns into a backrest.

If the bed extends from the podium, laminated chipboard is not suitable as a material for manufacturing, since the structure will be subject to significant load. In this case, a rough sheathing is created from OSB or thick plywood, which is sheathed on top with laminate, carpet or other material. The plywood is attached to the frame with self-tapping screws.

A pull-out bed is made in the form of a large rectangular box, inside of which the mattress will be located. The simplest solution is to purchase a ready-made slatted bottom. The sides of the frame are lined with plywood sides. Wheels are attached to the bottom of the frame.

Using a podium bed you can zone the space in a small room

With or without decorative trim

A headboard with decorative trim is the opposite of simple headrests. Even in gray tones it attracts attention. We'll tell you why.

  • The capitonné technique, or carriage screed , gives the bed a royal look. Previously, carriage screeds were used to decorate furniture and carriages of noble people, so this decorative technique serves as an indicator of luxurious life.
  • Square, diamond-shaped and other types of picks “break” the headboard into elements of the correct shape. Straight lines give the furniture a strict look and help play with the geometry of the bedroom. If the board is “broken” into vertical lines, then the ceiling can be made visually higher.
  • Brass inserts are another decorative technique that helps give furniture a noble look, and at the same time the bedroom. Most often, designers use inserts in the form of vertical and horizontal stripes of different widths.
  • Gold piping and furniture studs around the perimeter of the headboard continue the theme of refined furniture. These decorative elements help to highlight the headrest against the wall and make it more attractive.
  • An additional “side” along the edge of the headboard creates a more comfortable environment. In addition, this decorative technique helps to retain heat if the bed is located near a cold wall.

An additional “side” with a edging made of furniture nails may seem pretentious, but in a classic interior these details look harmonious

Do-it-yourself wardrobe-bed made of wood: photos of drawings and progress of work

A DIY wardrobe bed at home has an unusual look. The bed is put away in a special storage area that is not visible from the outside. This model fully allows you to save free space, since the assembled structure is included in the cabinet and does not take up space.

To make a transforming bed with your own hands, you can take an old design. The frame is freed from the slats. A cabinet frame is created under it. To do this, you should use 40x50 mm bars, with the help of which a rectangular structure is assembled. Using the corners, the base of the frame is fixed to the wall.

Next, the lifting mechanism and gas springs are attached to the sides of the cabinet. The first element connects to the bed frame. To fix the elements, it is very important to use strong bolts, which allow you to carefully screw the parts to each other, since this place will bear the maximum loads.

Slats are installed on the frame of a floating bed, made with your own hands. The base of the structure is made from a sheet of chipboard, which must be decorated with wallpaper or special paper, creating an imitation of a cabinet. In the upper part on the outside of the base you need to attach handles, by pulling which you can unfold the bed. It is advisable to supplement the design with side cabinets for storing clothes, open shelves or lamps.

Installing and replacing slats in a bed

Provided that all requirements regarding assembly rules have been met, the only thing that can be damaged over time is the slats themselves. Even a novice master can carry out repairs. Modern holders vaguely resemble rubber products, which over time may lose some elasticity and break. After a short squeak, the slats themselves fall out of the fastenings. After replacing individual elements, you should be prepared for the fact that the remaining slats will soon also fall out. It is possible to improve the design yourself.

Preliminary manipulations consist of preparing the necessary components and tools. You will need:

  • edge tapes;
  • knife;
  • furniture footer;
  • nuts, bolts and engravers;
  • electric drills;
  • roulette;
  • chisel;
  • screwdriver;
  • construction stapler.

Sequencing:

  1. All damaged and old tips are removed. To do this, the elements are pryed off with a chisel.
  2. Loose connections are adjusted with a screwdriver at all connection points.
  3. The slats are laid downwards in a curve after removing foreign elements from the frame in the places where they were previously located.
  4. The end of the edge tape is fixed with two staples, directly to the first strip. The distance from the side will be 6 cm.

DIY technology for making a wooden bed with a lifting mechanism

To create a bed with a lifting mechanism with your own hands, you should prepare a detailed drawing of the furniture assembly, and you can also find a similar diagram on specialized websites on the Internet. This will avoid many design errors that will subsequently negatively affect the functionality of the structure.

You can choose a gas or mechanical device as a lifting mechanism. The operation of the first option is based on the use of gas shock absorber springs. The mechanism is either equipped with a lock or does not have a lock. The main advantages are soft finishing, silent operation and ease of operation.

The mechanical element operates using metal springs. It is characterized by the ability to adjust the operation of the lifting system by removing, adding, tightening or loosening springs.

Beds with a lifting mechanism are practical, functional and easy to use

Using a do-it-yourself drawing of a wooden bed, drawer frames, sides, headboards and bottoms of drawers are made from chipboard or MDF. The base frame is made from wooden blocks. The bottom for the drawers is attached to it. Tsars and side elements are installed on the frame, on top of which the slatted flooring under the mattress is laid. A chipboard headboard is fixed to the base.

According to the instructions, the lifting mechanism is installed. The lower steel strip is attached to the timber frame of the base, and the upper one is attached to the side part. After the bed structure is assembled, it is covered. To do this, sheet foam rubber is laid on the base in several layers. On top it is covered with upholstery material made of fabric, dermantine or leather. The sheathing is attached to the frame using a furniture stapler. The sides of the bed are processed in the same way.

Important! In places where the finishing touches the lifting mechanism, small spacers are inserted under the main material.

The final stage is the installation of finishing accessories in the form of rollers, wheels or support legs.

Deciding on additional options

Modern beds can be equipped with additional functions:

  • storage systems: drawers for bedding, shelves for things or built-in cabinets;
  • backlight. It can perform both its direct function and a decorative one;
  • canopies - fabric canopies that provide a feeling of comfort and security while sleeping.

Using the rules and recommendations outlined above, you can easily choose a bed for your bedroom. A correctly selected product will not only ensure high quality sleep and a good mood during the day, but can also become a highlight in the interior of your bedroom. And remember: you shouldn’t skimp on buying a bed, because statistics show that most spinal diseases are caused by an uncomfortable bed.
