Hanging cocoon chair: how to make it yourself?

Making a cocoon chair is easier than making a regular stationary one. The only thing is that you can’t make it from acrylic, but you can weave it from rattan, sew it from thick fabric, or weld a metal structure. The following will describe how to make a hanging cocoon chair using various methods.

All people love a comfortable holiday in a cozy environment. That’s why they try to decorate their home so that harmony reigns in the house or on their property. A comfortable hanging cocoon chair is precisely such a part of the interior that not only decorates the home, but also contributes to a pleasant pastime, both alone and in good company. You can sit in it very comfortably, because you can relax in it. And hide from everyone for a while. The cocoon chair is made in the shape of an egg and covers a person by 75 percent, thanks to the side walls.

Modern manufacturing companies produce such furniture in different designs. Of course, you can buy a ready-made cocoon hanging chair, but its price will vary depending on what you make yourself. And you can create your own individual design. To cope with this task, consider what types of chairs there are:

Materials for frame and base

For the frame you can use steel, copper or plastic pipes, rods, tree branches. Metal pipes, if you need to bend them into a circle, will have to be rolled on special machines, so it is better to use an old gymnastic hoop of a suitable diameter instead. The rods can be bent by first soaking them in water. Frame parts can also be made from PVC or metal-plastic pipes with a diameter of at least 32 mm.

For the base, you can use round or profiled pipes. In order for the furniture to support the weight of the person sitting, the cross-sectional size of the pipes must be at least 30 mm with a wall thickness of 3-4 mm. The base must be made very stable to prevent the chair from tipping over.

When making a frameless chair from a piece of fabric, you can put a circle of plywood inside to give the seat a comfortable shape. Of course, it needs to be covered with fabric and pillows placed on top.

From the many types of materials, you need to choose the ones most suitable for the conditions of use of the furniture. Fabric chairs, for example, are not advisable to use outdoors, since most such materials fade in the sun. Natural rattan is afraid of moisture, so it is not recommended to leave such furniture in the rain. But indoors it is better to use environmentally friendly natural materials.

Artificial rattan and plastic will withstand humidity, sun and temperature changes well.

To braid the frame, you can use the macrame technique. This is the name of the type of weaving for which textile cords, ribbons, and ropes are used.

Cocoon hanging chair – drawing

When residents arrange their home, they always create a corner where they will be quiet and calm. To do this, sometimes it is enough to simply make a hanging cocoon chair according to the drawing provided below. In this case, you will need the ability to weld iron tubes and create original weaves to get the finished look of the product.

To make the chair perfect, first make a drawing, take all the necessary materials and tools. You may need: accessories, a welding machine, special gloves and overalls, slings, fastenings, pillows, scissors, etc.

Drawing of a cocoon chair

The finished product will be an excellent “tool” for relaxation. In addition, the cocoon chair can be made according to individual sketches, so you will get a designer model. It may have a different shape, be more or less round, and you can also change its size. Those who like privacy can create a 3/4 ball model so that only 1/4 is open. You can braid a rigid frame with any weaving, both openwork and dense.

To manufacture the product, you should use only high-quality materials; in addition to metal tubes, bamboo, rattan, and willow rods are excellent. The cocoon chair, made from natural raw materials, looks great and will serve for a long time.

Weaving techniques

There are a lot of weaving techniques. All of them differ in relief, pitch and density. Conventionally, they can be divided into 2 very large groups:

  • Smooth;
  • Openwork.

The first type includes weaving techniques with a minimum gap between the rods. For example, it is worth noting:

  • General. Basic weaving for beginners. To do this, you will need flat but fairly wide ribbons (about 1 cm wide). They are intertwined in a checkerboard pattern with a 1x1 step. Durable fabric with a good appearance. A good choice for those who do not set out to create a masterpiece right away. It is better to learn from this method;
  • Banded. First, the vertical base is stretched. Use a thin rope for braiding. The horizontal component is woven with a step of 2x1. The drawing comes with an offset. Where the vertical thread was at the top, in the next row it goes down;
  • Fish tail. Diagonal blending with a step of 2x2;
  • Ladder. Step 2x2. The shift occurs in each row in different directions;
  • Herringbone. It is not woven as a continuous fabric. You will have to start several starting positions at once. Step 3x2. Each position moves relative to its row towards the neighboring one. High relief of the canvas with a pronounced central angle.

No less interesting are openwork techniques:

  • Tetrahedral. A very often used beautiful ornament resembling six-pointed stars;
  • Hexagonal. Drawing with a pronounced oriental flavor. Quite a complex weave. Openness is average.

DIY cocoon swing - hanging chair

The cocoon hanging chair differs from other swing-shaped chairs in its closed space. As you can see in the image below, it has high side surfaces that meet at the top into one point. The shape of the cocoon chair can be in the form of a ball or an egg. Sometimes there are teardrop-shaped chairs; they are mostly closed from prying eyes. Making an item at home is not so easy, but craftsmen will be able to do this task.

DIY cocoon chair

You can create a cocoon chair with your own hands from metal hoops. That is why its shape will resemble the shape of a sphere. Check out the image above. Sewing a mattress for a swing chair will not be difficult, the main thing is to stock up on material, threads and padding polyester in advance.

  1. The base should be welded from tubes; steel hoops can also be used. You will need to use about three of these hoops. The product is reinforced with arcs. This is how the cocoon itself turns out. A place for a pleasant pastime.
  2. When the base is ready, you should paint it; you can choose the color yourself, one that will suit you to the overall interior of the room or garden.
  3. For decoration, the hoops are wrapped with steel ropes. Turn to turn. Afterwards they need to be lubricated with special glue to maintain their shape.
  4. In order to get the finished product, use rope, decorative cord, etc. you can weave different types of weaves - both nets and flowers, whatever you like.
  5. All that remains is to attach the cocoon to the stand with a special mount with a chain.
  6. To sit in this chair, install a wooden plank or sew a small mattress from a nice fabric and padding polyester.

As you can see, if you have the desire and the necessary materials, you can make a wonderful item for your interior and have a good time. To do this, you don’t need to allocate huge amounts of money to buy an industrial chair. The product will delight all your guests with its beauty, and you can be proud of your “work.”

Design on two hoops

More often, chairs are made using the macrame weaving technique, like a regular hammock, but not everyone has this skill, and therefore you can make a chair in another way, more common and simpler.

To make such a chair, the list of necessary materials will change:

  • 2 metal hoops of different diameters - 0.7 and 1.1 m;
  • nylon cord 1 m long, thickness not less than 4 mm (can be replaced with linen or jute rope);
  • nylon cord for cables: length – 12 m, thickness – 7 mm;
  • metal pipes: diameter -25 mm, 2 pieces (can be replaced with a rope with a diameter of 12 mm).

Rattan hanging chair - cocoon

The most notable option for making a hanging swing in the shape of an egg is a rattan cocoon chair. Natural material is used for this product and the chair looks beautiful and natural. In the same way, you can make a chair from grapevine, bird cherry, and willow branches.

Tools and materials:

  • Willow twigs with a diameter of 15-20 millimeters
  • Metal hoops, hollow tubes
  • Ruler, knife, pliers, glue, awl
  • Twine, synthetic cord for back
  • Ropes or slings to hang the swing chair.

The product can be woven using different techniques. Depending on the pattern, your cocoon hanging chair will look different. Experienced craftsmen can weave beautiful and complex patterns.

Next, let's look at how to make a rattan chair:

  1. First you will have to make the base of the product; this is what metal rods will be needed for.
  2. It is better to wrap the crosspiece with thin rods, so the product will look neater. Round nose pliers can come in handy in such cases.
  3. It is advisable to tie another layer of rods around the rigid base, then the chair will look aesthetically pleasing.
  4. The last layer should be braided with a special twine with glue, so the wicker rods will not unravel and will lie flat.
  5. The entire back and sides of the product are woven with the patterns you like; you can use “checkerboard”. The remaining end is brought out at the top, so that later the slings can be tied to this cord.
  6. The base for the cocoon chair is made from a hoop to which metal tubes are welded using a welding machine.
  7. A special carabiner is used to secure the cocoon chair.

IMPORTANT : You can place this model in the living room, nursery or hall. Much depends on your desires and the layout of the house.

Forms

Such chairs can be made not only from PVC pipes, but also from wood and profile pipes. There are many options. But the advantage of polypropylene pipes is that they are easy to process and quite inexpensive.

First you need to decide on the form. There is a master class for each case.

  • Ball
    . From the name it is clear that this is a round design. In terms of comfort and convenience, the best model;
  • Cocoon, egg or drop
    . Everyone calls it differently. They are mainly made from rattan, textiles and thick threads;
  • Hammock
    . They cannot be hung from the ceiling. It needs to be pulled between two supports. Mostly trees. Designed for relaxation while lying down rather than sitting.

In fact, only the first option falls under the definition of a hanging chair. Let's dwell on it in more detail.

Step-by-step master class on making the product :

  1. First, make a pattern for the chair. To do this, you will need to make two circles; the diameter may be different; for a child seat, 60 centimeters is enough.
  2. Then build four isosceles triangles, the height of which will be 121 centimeters and the width 47 centimeters. Round the bottom of the figure a little. Also, for beauty and side processing, cut a straight ribbon, the length of which is 2 meters and the width is 25 centimeters.
  3. Now fold the ribbon in half. This will be the ribbon for decorating the sides of the product.
  4. Make a cone out of four triangles by sewing the side parts of the products together, do not sew one part.
  5. Now decorate the base of the cocoon swing. To do this, sew the double bottom to the cone. Form the seams so that they are on the inside.
  6. Turn the product inside out so that the stitches are not visible, and using the ellipse pattern, make an even cutout in the cocoon chair.
  7. Cover this cutout with tape. All that remains is to sew the mount to the chair and put a pillow inside.

To make it comfortable for your child to sit in a cocoon chair, you can sew a hoop inside the bottom instead of an inflatable pillow.

For outdoor use, cushions made from teak, satin or twill are suitable. The color of the material may be different; choose one that matches the external design of the recreation area.

Suitable fillers include latex, foam rubber, and padding polyester. They are resistant to deformation and, if necessary, can be easily washed and cleaned. The shape of the cushion depends on the shape of the seat. It is recommended to use large buttons sewn onto the surface of the pillow as decoration. They need to be sewn in such a way as to fasten both sides of the fabric, passing through the filler. They will serve as an interesting design element and also prevent deformation of the filler. It is better to refuse other decor, because the main thing in a pillow is functionality and comfort of use.
