DIY bench: diagrams, photo ideas and main stages of work. Simple options for making an outdoor bench with a back

Why is wood preferred?

Given the variety of materials used to make garden furniture, the best option is wood. It is preferred for its ease of processing and affordability.

  • In addition, the wooden bench is not heavy, so it can be easily moved around the site.
  • Sitting on a wooden bench while drinking tea is much more comfortable than sitting on a metal or plastic surface.
  • Due to its low thermal conductivity, wood does not heat up or cool down quickly. Even in hot weather, its temperature remains average.

If the technology for assembling wooden parts is correctly followed, the result will be a voluminous, strong and durable structure. All its elements can be easily mechanically affected. Even if you have no experience in making a bench, giving it the desired shape will not be difficult.

Under the influence of precipitation, as well as as a result of damage by various insects and bacteria, the bench can become unusable and rot. Therefore, it is very important to take proper care of it.

Original solutions

Along with the classical approach to the process of making benches, there is also an original one, although solving such a problem requires appropriate materials and tools.

For example, you can also build a bench from a large stone if you attach an appropriate wooden platform to it.

Bench made of stone and boards

If bamboo is available, a seat is also made from it, which will take on a more exotic look.

Or a stone.

Sitting in winter will be unpleasant, but beautiful...

It all depends on the flight of fancy. A real owner does not have unnecessary things or materials in his dacha. With a reasonable approach, you can attach any thing, and it will not just lie around in the country or lie like a dead weight in the garage or shed.

Requirements for a future shop

The constructed bench model should have the following properties:

  • Comfort. To make the bench comfortable, it is better to make it with a back or armrests on which you can lean.
  • Reliability. The bench must be safe when exposed to heavy loads. Therefore, it is necessary to use high-quality wood and fastenings.
  • Moisture resistance and resistance to temperature changes. The bench is usually installed in an open space, so it will have to withstand all seasons of weather. Therefore, it must be free of defects and damage.

To ensure that the product meets all the required characteristics, only high-quality, well-dried material is used in its manufacture. Damp wood is unsuitable.

Making a bench with your own hands from pallets

Making such a product is not difficult. You can use a photograph as a visual aid. It is necessary to use only whole starting material. If you fasten all the elements together correctly, you will get a good bench made of pallets.

There are several manufacturing options:

  • The tray should not be damaged as it will be used as a seat. Using a circular saw, you need to cut it into 2 parts. In this case, one half should be slightly larger than the other. For example, 4 sections are suitable for the seat, and 3 for the backrest.

  • Additional boards serve as legs and frame. The seat and back are nailed to them. For structural strength, planks are screwed to the sides using self-tapping screws.

  • The seat and backrest must be thoroughly cleaned and sanded.

  • The legs are screwed on using a tool. They are fastened together with small bars. This is necessary for the strength of the structure.

  • The final stage is painting. You can apply varnish or stain to a wooden product.

When making wooden benches for your garden with your own hands, you don’t need to be afraid to experiment. The main thing is that the product with a back pleases the owner with its beauty and durability. You can use the simplest way to make a bench and build it yourself. This is both profitable and interesting.

Idea No. 1 - stone base

The most budget bench is made from cheap materials. What could be cheaper than stones lying everywhere? The two most relevant options here are masonry and gabion.

Stonework allows you to experiment with the configuration, curves, armrests and back of the bench. To do this, you can take both uneven blocks and sawn stone. The cobblestones are stacked in random order and secured with concrete mortar.

On such a hard and sometimes cold base, it is better to use soft pillows, which will add not only comfort, but also style and color.

No less interesting is a gobion - a rectangular mesh filled with stone, crushed stone or pebbles. A wooden seat is subsequently placed on top of such a support.

Design ideas

To create a beautiful natural corner of nature on your site, when making a bench with your own hands, various styles are used:

  1. Original design. Homemade benches look wonderful with wicker fences. You can make the back in the form of a dense weave of branches.
  2. Moroccan style The product will be colorful if the details are decorated with carvings;
  3. Chinese style. The design is complemented with bamboo.
  4. British style. Involves making a bench from solid wood species such as oak and ash. They decorate it with intricate patterns.

Any wooden bench can be transformed with textiles. For example, pillows and bedspreads. It will feel like home.

Simple scheme

The easiest bench designs to make are a long seat on two or three legs. Moreover, two wood blocks and several sanded boards of the required width are usually chosen for the base. The algorithm is simple: install the supports at the required distance and fix the seat on them.

To complement the design with a backrest, holders are attached to the seat on two opposite sides, to which light, smooth boards are nailed. After installation, the product is painted and varnished.

By the way, a wooden base is a classic, but it has many variations: folded boards in the shape of the letter “X”, “H”, “P” or an inverted “T”, standard rectangular legs, thick bars or saw cuts.

Bench options

No backrest. This is a simple shop. The manufacturing assembly process includes the following steps:

  • Legs. Cut 4 pieces from the board. Saw off the internal corners to stabilize the bench. Using two bars, the legs are sequentially secured with wood screws.
  • Supports. The legs are connected using a beam made of timber.
  • Seats. Boards are placed on the supports, leaving a gap of one centimeter. Screw them to the ends of the legs. The edges of the seat should protrude by 10 cm.
  • Strengthening. For stability, side strips of arbitrary length are screwed to the bench. To do this, use a marker to mark the points and grooves for the slats. Insert the planks and secure them with nails.

With log legs

Collection is carried out in the following sequence:

  • Boards for sitting are cut to the same length. You can round the edges. Place the boards at equal distances. Make marks at the places where the legs are attached. Do not drill holes through the marks.
  • The logs for the legs are made equal in length. Measure the distance between the holes in the boards for the seat. Measurements are taken on the first row of logs, and non-through holes are made. In all other rows, holes are drilled in a checkerboard pattern, with a mirror image. The logs are connected to each other using wooden pins treated with wood glue. The seat is attached to the legs.

Corner shop

Ideal option for a small area. The bench takes up little space. Made from two separate benches.

The assembly method is as follows:

  • First step. Preparing parts from boards.
  • Second step. Two separate benches are assembled from the parts. The legs are screwed on both sides of the support. The seat is nailed to the frame so that it protrudes about five centimeters from the edge.
  • Third step. The benches are connected in the form of the English letter “L” using steel brackets.

Wooden pallet bench

Such a bench is assembled from pallets as follows:

  • To make the back and seat, the pallet is cut into two parts. A little more for the seat, a little less for the back. They are fastened with self-tapping screws.
  • To increase strength and stability, struts are attached to the resulting structure on both sides.
  • Legs are made from the remaining boards and attached to the base.

How to do it - examples

The design of the bench and the bench are slightly different. A bench is just a place to relax without a back or armrests. The bench looks more presentable; if desired, garden furniture can be decorated with carvings or forged elements, and armrests can be added. Benches with unusual shapes look great.

To build a simple garden bench with a backrest in the simplest way, you can use boards and wooden boxes as support. It is better to pre-paint or varnish the latter to highlight the texture of the wood.

By the way, if you fill the boxes with soil and plant annual flowers, you will get an impromptu flowerbed made with your own hands. Choose unpretentious plants that do not require complex care. How to do:

  1. The boards used for sitting are processed (planed).
  2. If necessary, you can go over the surface with sandpaper to remove all irregularities.

A bench with a base of drawers can easily be turned into a comfortable bench. The structure must be installed against the wall, onto which several narrow slats or boards must be nailed as a backrest.

And now about the shortcomings. The tree requires constant care and does not tolerate moisture. Therefore, it is better to install the supports on a layer of waterproofing material or a base of paving slabs. If this is not possible, it is better to replace wooden boxes with cabinets made of concrete or stone.

Treated wood is suitable for seating. The boards can be painted or simply treated with special protective compounds. The boards are attached to the base using metal corners. As fasteners - dowels (for concrete), self-tapping screws - for wood.

Instead of supports, you can use decorative flowerpots with shrubs or dwarf trees. The main thing is that the pots should be as simple in shape as possible and made of durable material. To make an unusual bench, just cut holes in the boards in the shape of flowerpots, which will also serve as a base.

It is not necessary to attach the seat to the base. The design will still be stable.

Wooden bench made from old chairs

Sometimes there are chairs left on the farm that are useful for making a rather comfortable bench. If you have two identical chairs, you can safely assemble it.

The assembly process is divided into:

  • Disassembling chairs. Only the parts with the back and legs are left.
  • The backs are connected using a box of bars of the required section.
  • They make a frame that will provide the bench with reliability. Install it at a distance of 20 cm from the floor.
  • Cut out the seat.
  • Install the seat on the frame.

You can add interesting ideas to any of the manufacturing methods based on your experience working with wood.

In the end, all that remains is to saturate your creation with special preparations for protection, and then coat it in 2 layers with waterproof wood varnish or oil paint for external work.

Dimensions and drawings

The overall size of a garden bench is calculated based on individual preferences and needs. For a comfortable rest for three adults, the bench size should be about 150 x 40 cm, the seat height is usually 45 cm, the backrest is mounted 90 cm from the ground. It is recommended to install the bench with a slope of 20 degrees.

At the project development stage, it is wise to make a detailed drawing of the intended product.

Finished drawings can serve as the basis for an individual project.
