The most traditional model of hanging chairs is the ceiling-mounted version. This involves some difficulties, but the results will be worth it. Please your household with a cozy “nest” for a comfortable rest.
Features of suspended ceiling chairs
Chairs suspended from the ceiling have a number of features:
- Huge variety of models. They will vary in shape, design, and materials. All of them are united only by the method of fastening;
- An excellent replacement for a swing. In small-sized housing, the issue of children's swings comes to the fore. In this case, you will kill two birds with one stone. Your child will be happy and an original piece of furniture will appear in the house;
- Comfortable holiday with memories of childhood. It will be enjoyable at any age;
- A properly hung chair can withstand high loads;
- A removable soft seat will make the relaxation process more comfortable.
Not all features are nice:
- The models are not suitable for older houses. If you have doubts about the reliability of the ceilings, it is better to immediately choose chairs suspended from a rod;
- A number of construction works will be required. Drilling slabs, cementing the suspension and decorative camouflage have not been canceled;
- The chair loses its mobility completely. It will not be possible to move it to another place. It's too impractical.
Frame
Based on the presence of a frame, the following types are distinguished:
- Frameless. It can be called differently - a hammock chair. Their peculiarity is that they perfectly match the shape of the body. They are suitable only for those people who do not have problems with the musculoskeletal system and back pain.
- Frame. They are distinguished by the presence of a durable frame. Pillows are always included with frame chairs. This helps create a state of comfort and coziness.
Methods for attaching a hanging chair to the ceiling
There are several ways to secure the suspension hook:
- Cementing. The method is suitable for slabs with internal cavities. Your task is to calculate it and drill the slab in exactly this place. This can be done by sound. Next, the cementing composition is squeezed into the cavity using a construction syringe. This can be a ready-made chemical solution or any hardening paste. A suspension with an upper hook is pressed into the fresh composition. The chair can be hung only after both the binding composition and the decorative finish have completely dried;
- Carrier screen. If the previous method does not suit you and the slab cannot be strengthened, then you will have to make longitudinal or transverse tires from metal profiles. Their main task is to take the load on themselves, distributing it evenly. The design is not very attractive. Try to disguise it with false beams or drywall;
- Beam suspension. The simplest option. The coffered type of ceilings requires the presence of internal load-bearing beams. It is to this that the chair is attached. In this case, mobility is partially preserved. The chair can be dismantled or moved without consequences.
None of the existing methods can be used if there is an installed stretch or suspended ceiling.
Interior matching
The appearance of the chair attached to the ceiling gives a clear impression of good taste on its owner. At the same time, it is important not to rush into buying the first model you like, since no interior will accept it harmoniously.
There are a number of recommendations to help you select a suitable hanging chair:
- A strict classic interior basically excludes the possibility of using such structures. At the same time, efforts to adapt the hanging chair to this style continue. The result is simply a repetition of the design of classic furniture, equipped with a specific fastening. Such products must have a comfortable back and wooden armrests. It is clear that we are not talking about any wicker or plastic models here.
- Despite the fact that Baroque, Rocaille or Rococo are also considered classical styles, they allow the presence of swings. In this case, it is advisable to do without plastic, cocoons and rattan models. Options made from natural wood, the lacquered back of which is decorated with beautiful carvings, are perfect: this favorably emphasizes the pomp of the overall design. In these styles, the use of artistic forging is encouraged: given the large weight of forged chairs, it is recommended to install them on frames.
- In cases where the owner of a classic interior still wants to purchase a hanging chair, during its installation there is no need to hide power fasteners (chains, cable, etc.). On the contrary, these details are often highlighted with additional decor.
- The Art Nouveau style is distinguished by its versatility, which makes it possible to use any type of suspended structures. It is important to remember that Art Nouveau is characterized by a riot of bright colors. This opens up wide possibilities for the use of bright wicker cocoons, transparent “Bubble” and fabric mini-hammocks. The main thing is that this furniture is bright and catchy.
- Country and French Provence are perfectly complemented by wicker furniture. The design of the chairs here can be very diverse: the main condition is that they must be wicker. When using fabric models, they try to give preference to rounded shapes. Provence allows the possibility of using forged pendants installed on separate frames.
- It is not advisable to complement the increasingly popular ecological and ethnic interiors with plastic furniture. The ban does not apply to other materials here. It can be an imposing hammock, a wicker cocoon, a fabric or wooden drop.
- Most often in high-tech style they use transparent “Bubble”. It is important to remember that despite the assurances of emancipation and freedom of action, this style has a fairly extensive list of restrictions (almost the same as the strict classics). They try to give preference to furniture made of plastic and nickel-plated metal. Bizarre configurations are encouraged.
- The modern loft is also distinguished by its originality. Considering the fact that the loft is classified as an attic style, knitted and fabric hammocks fit most harmoniously into it. A cloth drop would also be appropriate here. Transparent “Bubble” will come in very handy in the loft style, which cannot be said about wicker lashes.
Models of suspended ceiling chairs
Hanging chairs come in a variety of interior shapes to suit every taste:
- Egg/ball. This is a truncated hemisphere of regular or slightly elongated shape. The standard depth is 50 cm. Chairs with a 2/3 section can reach 85 cm in depth. Suspended strictly vertically. Designed for one person. Provide a complete overview;
- Cocoon. This chair looks more like a “house” and will hide you from prying eyes. The frame can be of any shape, but it will invariably be closed. Only a small “loophole” will allow you to get inside. Although, even the entrance can be equipped with a curtain or door. A great way to find privacy in a large family. Differ in larger dimensions;
- Hammock. This is a type of frameless textile chairs. They can be hung in the form of a drop (the edges are gathered at one point) or on a triangular “hanger” (hanger 2). Most loved by children for their comfort and softness. They are something between a camping tent, a swing and a hammock. The bottom is most often sealed with a special insert.
What are there
Cocoon
Considered a variation on the theme of the very first air chair, designers from Denmark created the Egg model with a comfortable ergonomic shape. Modern manufacturers repeat it in different interpretations, always maintaining cozy rounded outlines in which you can truly relax.
Cocoons are made of metal, fabric or macrame, natural and artificial materials for weaving. Examples of what a hanging cocoon chair might look like are in the photo below.

Weaving is the most common basis for frames of this type. Wicker hanging chairs, as in the photo, are made from wicker, bamboo or rattan. The latter can be natural or artificial, which in terms of technical characteristics is in no way inferior to the original. In addition, it does not require complex care (real rattan must be moistened regularly), and it is also more durable and flexible.
Wicker models combine well with wood and other natural materials. Suitable for ethnic, Scandinavian or eco-interiors.

Ball
Products of this type have a regular ball shape, and the frame is usually made of transparent or translucent material. This creates the feeling of being in a soap bubble or a drop of water. The degree of openness also varies: some models are a hemisphere, and some are almost completely covered with a plastic frame, leaving only a small hole for climbing into the shelter.
Such models are attached directly to the ceiling, most often on a metal chain. Suitable for modern styles, especially hi-tech and minimalism.

Hammock
Some seats are more reminiscent of a hammock than a traditional chair. Such a product does not have a frame at all - it is a dense fabric, the ends of which are turned up, the fabric is attached first to the horizontal crossbar, and then to the ceiling.
This type of furniture is most often found in country houses or in boho interiors, as in the photo. In a city apartment, such an element immediately adds brightness to the atmosphere and is associated with relaxation on the seashore.

Swing chair
Another unusual variation of the standard model, which is attached to the ceiling on two strong cables or ropes. The seat can be flat, like a classic swing, made of wood, metal or plastic, or stylized - for example, a wicker version with sides and a soft lining is suitable for a children's room.

Manufacturing materials
The most favorite materials for manufacturing are:
- Weaving from natural materials. It can be rattan, young willow, raffia. These chairs are very beautiful. Withstands up to 150 kg of weight;
- Macrame. The basis is a nylon or silk cord. The method allows you to decorate a chair with tassels, fringes, braids, twisted strands;
- Plastics;
- Acrylic. Withstands up to 200 kg load. At the same time, it is absolutely transparent. Not resistant to scratches;
- Wood;
- Soft metals or wire made from them. The most decorative options are those in rubberized braiding;
- Textile. It must be dense, durable, resistant to stretching without deformation.
Form
According to their shape, chairs are divided into a number of models:
- Cocoon. This form has gained high popularity among adults. It is this chair that is comfortable to be in because of its size and internal space. All this contributes to relaxation and rest. It has a hook for fastening.
- Egg chair or ball. Mounts exclusively in a vertical position. It has a depth ranging from 50 to 85 centimeters. Only 1 person can fit in this ball.
- A drop. Ideal option for children. Its shape is somewhat similar to an improvised hut for children's fun. If your child likes to play, then you can play this option with a whole castle.
Rules for installing a hanging chair to the ceiling with your own hands
Let's look at the hanging process step by step:
- It is advisable to start with an assessment of the condition of the ceiling by architects. Having a permit is a big deal in terms of security;
- Choose a location. The attachment point should allow the chair body to be freely placed with a margin for swing amplitude. You will need a lot of free space around. There should be no other hanging objects nearby, even with low weight (chandeliers). Previous drilling may have contributed to the formation of microcracks in the slab;
<
>
- Hollow slabs are the standard type of ceiling slabs. The suspension point should coincide with the cavity. This will give you the opportunity to strengthen the ceiling in this place;
- A hole of the required diameter is drilled;
- Using a construction syringe, a polymer anchor or other cementitious composition is pumped into the cavity until it fails;
- The top hook is immediately inserted;
- Excess solution is removed;
- The anchor dries according to the instructions until completely hardened. Usually about 2 – 3 days;
- Putty and plastering are carried out around the hook. The masking must dry;
- Next, a ring with a spring, a suspension chain and the chair itself are attached to the hook.
Do not use double chairs with a pair of suspensions for apartments in multi-storey buildings. Also, do not install several chairs side by side. This is only permissible for large wooden beams in a private house. The slab may begin to crack or crumble. The result can be conflicts with neighbors and expensive repairs.
Where and how to install
The installation of such a structure is simple - you need to determine the place where the chair will be installed, mark the fixation points and attach the suspension. It is much more difficult to find the right place for this piece of furniture and install it correctly.
It is necessary to take into account that you can swing on the chair and this will require free space. For the same reason, when installing such an item in a child’s room, it is necessary to ensure that the child does not swing too much. He may fall out and get injured.
The dimensions of the room also influence the choice of installation location. In large living rooms or bedrooms, you can attach a chair right in the middle of the room if it fits well with the rest of the decor. In rooms of a more modest size, one of the free corners is better suited for installation. At the same time, there is no need to push the chair into the very corner - it will be impossible to swing and you will lose the main advantage of this item.
In the bedroom, it is better to place such things closer to the window. Here you can relax or read before bed. By the way, reading while sitting in such a place is very comfortable and this can contribute to a more complete immersion in reading.
The most favorite places to install such structures are verandas and balconies. If the dimensions of these premises allow, then a better solution cannot be found. Models made of rattan and complemented with plank flooring look great.

A hanging chair will give you many unforgettable hours of relaxation with your favorite book or magazine. It is also a wonderful piece of furniture with an unusual design. The admiring glances of guests will invariably be drawn to the openwork body of the rocking chair with a ceiling mount.
Design and color
When making wicker chairs from natural rattan, they usually prefer to leave the natural shade of the material. If an artificial analogue is chosen, they are painted in different colors. The most popular are white, black, brown and red.
Acrylic products look modern. The material allows you to create chairs of different shapes and colors. The favorite model of world designers is a transparent ball that muffles sounds from the outside, creating an atmosphere for relaxation.
The base of the textile chair looks like a hammock. The choice of textures and colors of fabrics is quite wide. You can choose a suitable option for the interior of any room. Usually preference is given to materials of more consistent tones. Main requirements: abrasion resistance, ease of maintenance, attractive appearance.
To make it more comfortable, you can use a warm blanket. Using throw pillows will help soften the landing. They must match the color of the model. Such furniture can emphasize the balance of clear and smooth lines, which are used as contrast in the interior design. In a classic design, pillows made of noble fabrics (velvet, velor, jacquard) made in restrained colors would be appropriate. For Provence or country style, you can choose a product with a floral print. Modern interiors require a bright color accent - purple, red, yellow, turquoise.
Wicker
These are beautiful and elegant pieces of furniture that are woven from both artificial and natural materials (wicker, rattan). A swing chair of this type is considered a universal option, since this furniture does not burn or sink. She is absolutely not afraid of either high humidity or direct scorching rays of the sun.
Wicker furniture can withstand heavy loads and various external factors. It’s hard to believe, but with fairly intensive use, on average, such pieces of furniture last more than 10 years without restoration or repair. The wicker seat is very comfortable; it is considered the golden mean between soft and hard options.
For the manufacture of wicker furniture, including armchairs, they mainly use reed, rattan or willow. Mostly such products are made by hand, which is what affects their cost.
Other
For a modern interior, a product made of durable plastic or metal is suitable. There are many design options.
Recommendations
When the chair is ready, the only question left is the hanging. Methods for attaching a hanging chair always depend on the type of ceiling. The wooden one requires screwing a metal plate onto self-tapping screws; it can be supplemented with an iron ring. It is better to install an anchor hook with a ring in a concrete ceiling.
If there are voids in the concrete ceiling, then they will initially need to be treated with a chemical anchor; this is a special composition, ready for use. After filling the voids, the anchor is screwed in. The chair hangs up only after 2 days. If you have to mount a hanging chair in a room with a suspended ceiling, then you will initially need to remove it (or expose a certain area) and use a long anchor with a threaded coupling. A ring is screwed into the coupling, and then it is hidden under decorative overlays.
Proper care of furniture will significantly extend its service life; it is better to wipe wooden elements with a cloth and polish, and degrease iron elements and coat them with paint and varnish to avoid corrosion or destruction of the metal.
When planning a location, choose one where there will be a convenient approach to the chair. In the house it should not come into contact with other furniture, but on the street it is better to place it under a canopy or on the veranda. Well, the main requirement for a hanging chair is the ability to swing.
In the next video you will learn how to make a hanging chair for a summer house in 3 hours from improvised materials.
Varieties
When making chairs, the technique of macrame, weaving or cover is usually used.
- The macrame technique is the most airy. The variety of color palette of threads gives you the opportunity to choose any complex color, and the options for fabric density are wider than you might imagine.
- The weaving technique can also be airy, but rods and threads cannot be compared.
- The chair-cover has a quite dense appearance. The double fabric base is stuffed with padding polyester, the frame adds shape, only the manner of placement is preserved.
There are also frameless models; their structure is more reminiscent of a hammock. They use dense rope instead of solid guides.
Mounting method
According to the method of fastening, there are, as mentioned earlier, 2 types of chairs.
- A hanging chair is attached to a beam or ceiling. Their slings are made of chains or dense ropes. They can easily be used instead of swings. Such models are not suitable for rooms with a suspended ceiling, and due to the fastening, the chair will remain in this place until the next repair.
- The model on a stand can be moved according to your wishes, but it takes up more space. Looks good in a large room or due to a narrow seat.
Form
The shape of the chair has so many variations that even the most demanding owner can choose a model.
- A round or hemispherical chair fits perfectly into almost every interior. Typically, such a chair is double, which means it will take up a lot of space.
- The egg-shaped chair is more elongated; it is single-seater and has no armrests.
- The basket shape is usually presented for sitting with legs or “Turkish style”. Has a very small back or lacks it. You won’t be able to recline completely in it; it is made for a reclining position. It looks extremely original.
- The classic form is the most familiar to the average person. It has a back and armrests and will fit perfectly into almost any interior.
- The cocoon is the most closed form. Created for a comfortable stay. An ideal option for children to play or create their own personal space in the absence of a separate room.
- One of the most avant-garde forms of a wicker chair is a swing. It is designed as a seat and backrest, but without a front crossbar to protect against falling forward. This model, attached to the ceiling, takes up the least space and is very popular with children.
