We knit potholders with knitting needles of different shapes and colors according to diagrams and descriptions

Do you think that knitted potholders are a thing of the past, that no one decorates the kitchen with such accessories anymore? But you are mistaken, on the Internet we found many beautiful potholders, potholders of unusual shape, the kind that any needlewoman would not be ashamed to show off. We bring to your attention a selection of the most interesting models of knitted potholders.

What materials should I knit a potholder from?

The purpose of any oven mitt in the kitchen, in addition to aesthetic beauty, is to protect the housewife’s hands from hot pots and pans. Therefore, when knitting potholders, choose threads of medium thickness; they are most suitable for our purpose.

It is better to make the tack two-layer, i.e. you need to knit the front and back sides and sew them together. If, in your opinion, the resulting potholder is a bit thin, then insert a layer of 2 layers of flannel or 1 layer of padding polyester inside for compaction.

Don't forget that each potholder must have a loop. It can be knitted with knitting needles from a hollow cord and sewn to the main part.

Techniques for knitting potholders:

  • knit or purl stitch, so you can knit potholders from fashionable T-yarn;
  • jacquard potholders (look especially impressive with New Year's patterns);
  • potholders with shadow patterns;
  • potholders knitted in a circle;
  • potholders with arans and braids;
  • potholders combined with fabric.

We do not urge you to knit potholders, because now such a selection of different kitchen accessories is available in stores. We just want to emphasize that knitted accessories in the apartment emphasize the unique style of each housewife and create coziness in the house.

Square potholder in patchwork style

When creating potholders with your own hands from fabric with patchwork-style patterns, you can use fabrics of various shades. It all depends on what colors predominate in the kitchen. If it is beige, caramel or gray, then pastel colors are used. However, brighter options are also appropriate and are often used. Especially in an ensemble of a decorative element, such as a painting or a vase.

The materials are simple:

  • 2 pieces of linen fabric 24*24 cm.
  • 24 strips of the same fabric 2.5*24 cm.
  • 2 pieces of wool or cotton batting 24*24 cm.
  • Take the borders 25cm (so that it matches the main fabric). You can also make it yourself.
  • And, of course, scissors, needles, iron, thread, sewing machine - all available tools.

Linen fabric is placed under the batting, and stripes are placed on top, which will need to be sewn to the batting. Two strips are applied to each other, folded in the center of the main part, and sewn on one side. The top strip will subsequently need to be folded back and the seam ironed.

Then another strip is taken, placed on top of the ironed one and sewn on according to the same principle, and at the end it is turned away and ironed. As a result, the part should be completely covered with stripes. The second main fabric of the same type should be treated in the same way. Then a border is sewn onto these strips. The raw edge of the border must be connected to the raw edge of the potholder. First, from one corner it is sewn to one side of the clamp, and before each new corner the border is bent by 24 degrees. The result is that it is stitched around the entire perimeter.

At the end, it is worth returning to the starting corner and bending the border to the front side. Then, pinning it with pins, the tip becomes a “loop” and the rest is tucked inside.

The finishing touch is to sew the border to the front part.

In fact, in practice, you only need to try it once - and the patchwork style will seem the simplest of all.

Circle in patchwork style

Patchwork style accessories look very original

I offer you another interesting option for creating an oven mitt for the kitchen.

Patchwork potholder - original, stylish and unique

  1. Create a pattern with a circle of arbitrary diameter.
  2. Using the template you made, make a blank from the internal filler, and one solid piece for the outer side of the potholder.
  3. Cut out several scraps of randomly patterned fabrics.

Individual flaps will form the basis of one side of the potholder

  1. Connect all the previously created flaps together, using a sewing machine, stitch them into a single fabric.
  2. Press all seams thoroughly.
  3. Connect the circle of scraps to the corresponding piece of filler. Next, apply another layer of filler, and a piece of decorative fabric on top of it.
  4. Sew the entire potholder in a circle, carefully trim the remaining threads and pieces of fabric. Enjoy the results.

Check all seams carefully

Create a kitchen accessory in the shape of a Star

A chic and very original decor for the kitchen is an asterisk-shaped potholder. It looks like a real work of art. Many housewives even feel sorry for using them for their intended purpose; they hang them for beauty. By looking at the following photo, you can see that this accessory really looks great. Pot holders in the shape of flowers also look very beautiful, choose your option in the article CROCHETING FLOWERS FOR BEGINNERS WITH PATTERNS

Detailed master class describing the work process

To knit such a potholder you will need hook No. 2, 100% cotton thread, 50 g each, in two colors. Alternate threads by color according to your taste. The star potholder should be knitted in 2 threads so that it holds its shape well and does not turn out too thin.

Knit a chain of 8 vp. and close it in a ring.

1 row. 18th century s/n.

2nd row. *1 tbsp. b/n., 23 century. p.*, repeat *-* 9 times (scheme No. 1). Continue knitting according to pattern No. 2, while knitting the 3rd and 4th rows, change the thread to a different color and knit the 5th and 6th rows, then knit 2 more rows with the thread of the previous color. After this, wrap each petal and perform 2 rows of tying. Tie a loop from the 20th century. p., tied in one row of st. b/n.

Crocheted oven mitts for the kitchen

Good afternoon, dear needlewomen, all readers and friends of the blog!

I haven’t had any new ideas for knitted potholders for a long time, but we often need them for the kitchen, since the old ones quickly become unusable if used for their intended purpose.

Today I have an interesting selection for you: crocheted potholders. They are made of circles, completely simple, but so cute, funny and cheerful: these are potholders in the form of fruits, berries and citrus fruits, as well as in the form of animals.

I found the photo in various Internet sources, and knitted the potholder in the shape of a frog myself.

They are so easy to knit that you don’t even need patterns. And I will describe some points.

Crocheted oven mitts for the kitchen: a description of the general principles of knitting

You can knit potholders from any yarn: thin or medium thickness; usually we use the leftovers we have accumulated, since the consumption is not at all large.

What can be made from leftover yarn?

  • We choose the color of the yarn to match the natural color of a particular fruit.
  • The hook naturally matches the thickness of the thread.
  • As you can see in the photo, the basis of all such crocheted potholders is a circle.

You can knit in single crochets or single crochets at your discretion. It is better to tie the last row with single crochets, at the same time making a loop: a chain of VP and connecting ones along it.

And although I’m talking about potholders, such products are also suitable for hot pads.

How to knit a round part of a potholder

Everyone probably knows the rules for knitting a circle. But not everyone, especially beginners, knows one small nuance of a perfectly even circle.

  1. The principle most often used is that when knitting a circle, increments are made evenly, first in each stitch, then through one stitch, in the next row - through two stitches, through 3, 4, 5, and so on.
  2. At the same time, if you adhere to generally accepted patterns and always make increases in the same place, then the circle will not be round at all, but with wedges, since between the places of increases, knitting in a straight line will increase.
  3. Therefore, I would advise making increases row by row in different places: either at the beginning of the row, or in the middle part between the places of increases.
  4. In other words: we start one row immediately with an increase, and in the next row we do the increase not immediately, but through several knitted single stitches.
  5. Let's say, if the 3rd row began like this: 2VP, 2SC in one column of the previous row (increase), 1 SC and so on, then in the 4th row you should knit like this:
  6. 2VP, 1 RLS without increase, 2 RLS (increase), 2 RLS.
  7. 5th row: 2 VP, 2 RLS (increase), 3 RLS.
  8. 6th row: 2 VP, 2 RLS without increase, 2 RLS (increase), 4 RLS.
  9. 7th row: 2 VP, 2 RLS (increase), 5 RLS.
  10. 8th row: 2 VP, 3 RLS without increase, 2 RLS (increase), 6 RLS.
  11. 7th row: 2 VP, 2 RLS (increase), 7 RLS.
  12. 9th row: 2 VP, 4 RLS without increase, 2 RLS (increase), 8 RLS.
  13. With this knitting the circle will turn out even, exactly round.

Leaves

You can knit simple leaves to all potholders using the same pattern:

Here we collect a chain, knit single crochets and double crochets along it according to the pattern on one side, then turn the knitting and knit stitches on the other side.

Knitted citrus and fruit potholders

  • Potholders in the form of slices of citrus fruits or fruits and berries are knitted with threads of different colors.
  • For example, for a watermelon the center is red, then rows of crimson, white and green.
  • In the photo shown, when knitting potholders, rows of single crochets and rows of single crochets alternate.
  • For kiwi, you can use pistachio, white and green.
  • After the circle is knitted, seeds are embroidered on it with black or brown threads.
  • Using the same principle, you can knit an orange, lemon, grapefruit and other potholders by embroidering “vein” lines on them.

How to correctly attach a thread of a different color

I would like to immediately recommend that you correctly carry out the transition from one color to another.

If you attach a thread of a new color at the beginning of knitting the corresponding row, then at the junction there will be an unsightly “protrusion” of the color of the previous row (circled in red in the photo).

To prevent this from happening, we do the following.

At the end of knitting a row, before connecting the last stitch with the first one in the circle, attach a thread of a different color, insert the hook under the chain loop of the beginning of the row, grab a new thread and pull it through the loops on the hook.

Oven slices of orange, lemon

Such cute slices. I imagined how beautiful they would look in the kitchen, such decor made from different citrus fruits.

  1. For tack in the shape of an orange, use threads of light orange, white and bright orange; for lemon – two shades of yellow and white.
  2. After the circle is knitted, it is folded in half diagonally and connected by tying it with single crochets.
  3. For the “veins,” chains of air loops are knitted and sewn.

Funny potholders with eyes

Crocheted potholders can be decorated not only with leaves and embroidered seeds, but also to create a fairy-tale image by sewing or gluing eyes, a nose and even blush on the cheeks.

The first way to create crocheted potholders with patterns

We invite you to knit these fun potholders with your own hands.

For two potholders you will need 150 g of white yarn, 150 g of green and 100 g of light green. Take 100% cotton thread. Hook No. 4.

Making useful household items with your own hands is a delightful hobby!

It is advisable to knit such potholders in 2 threads, otherwise they will turn out thin and will heat up quickly. Knitting potholders is carried out only by one type of loops - single crochet. Each next row is turned 1 vp.

Model No. 1 “Small cage”. Using green thread, knit a chain of 35 chain stitches. plus 1 v.p. rise. Knit in b/n stitches.

Rows 1 - 5: *5 loops with green thread, 5 loops with white thread* - 3 times. Finish row 5 stitches with green thread.

6 – 10 rows: * 5 loops with white thread, 5 loops with light green thread * - 3 times. Finish row 5 stitches with white thread.

Repeat from rows 1 to 10 until you have a total of 35 rows. You can clearly see how to change colors in the photo. Decorate the binding with green thread in 1 circular row of b/n columns. In each corner, knit 3 tbsp from one corner loop of the previous row. b/n. For the loop at the end of the tying circle, perform 15 ch. and tie them st. b/n.

Model No. 2 “Large cage”. Dial 15 v.p. green and white thread and knit 19 rows st. b/n. On the 20th row, swap the color of the threads - green to white, and white to light green. Knit in single crochets for another 19 rows and finish knitting. Perform the binding and loop in the same way as in the description for model No. 1.

As you can see, everything is very simple. By spending just a couple of hours of your time, you can knit delicate and beautiful potholders.

Potholder knitted in the round

Every housewife in the kitchen must have 1 or 2 potholders for hot items. You can buy potholders in a store, or you can knit them yourself. We found an interesting master class on knitting potholders with knitting needles in the round. In addition, you will learn an interesting way of knitting, which may be useful for knitting round parts of products or hats.

Potholders knitting patterns

Pot holder in the shape of an orange

Bright towels in the shape of a juicy orange, lime or lemon will be an excellent decoration for your kitchen. It is very easy to knit such a potholder; even a novice needlewoman can cope with this task. It is recommended to use yarn made from natural fibers such as cotton, linen or bamboo. The main type of knitting is garter stitch.

Dimensions of potholders: diameter 20.5 cm.

Patterns and manufacturing diagrams

The main task is to come up with and implement the design of the future craft. Not only beautiful textile remnants are suitable for this purpose, but also various shapes - circles, hearts, squares, mittens, pumpkins, butterflies.

The sizes of the product vary depending on functionality, so it is preferable to make a solid set for all occasions: several circles or squares, a mitten, decorative cute things that lift your spirits.

To sew a mitten, prepare a pattern of the required size in advance so that after finishing the work your hand can fit freely inside. For square and round crafts, pieces of canvas measuring 20x20 cm (or others according to your desire and taste) are suitable. A strip of fabric for the loop is required - 8x12 cm.

When making potholders, it is important to accurately select textiles and heat insulators in order to protect your hands from burns. The right solution would be to use natural materials - linen, poplin, chintz, soft flannel

As an internal heat insulator, you can use synthetic winterizer, batting or an old terry cloth. When sewing a textile item, it is necessary to leave 6-10 mm on the seam.

Crochet square potholders: how to crochet an accessory

Square potholders are very convenient to use. They are also quite simple to knit.

There is no need to calculate increases and decreases, because the fabric is knitted in a straight line, and they can be no less beautiful.

Any square motif can be used as a pattern for a square potholder

A square potholder can also be associated with a flower.

Using simple single crochet stitches according to the pattern, you can crochet original square potholders with patterns.

If you want to use potholders for their intended purpose, then it is better to knit the second side of each potholder, or sew a second layer of fabric.

Square crochet potholder with geometric pattern

Geometric patterns have become popular recently. In the kitchen we often use square tiles with patterns, so this option for potholders can be universal.

Materials:

  • Yarn LanaGrossaCotone 100% cotton, 125m/50g: 50g green, 50g grey, 50g brown, 50g blue, 50g dark blue. Yarn colors can vary depending on your wishes.
  • Hook No. 3.

We knit a chain of 4 VPs, connecting it into a ring. Make 2 dc, 2 ch, 2 dc into ring.

We continue to knit in straight and reverse rows of STBN behind the back wall. The row begins with 1 VP lifting.

To create a square shape, we make 1 STBN, 2 VP, 1 SC into the corner arch.

You need to knit 23 rows.

The color rotation goes like this:

  1. 8 rows in brown, 7 rows in gray, 8 rows in green.
  2. 8 rows in brown, 7 rows in blue, 8 rows in blue.
  3. 5 rows in brown, 6 rows in blue, 6 rows in light gray, 6 rows in dark blue.
  4. 5 rows in blue, 6 rows in brown, 6 rows in dark blue, 6 rows in gray.

To knit the first potholder, we need to make two squares alternating colors 1) and 2), for the second - 2 squares alternating 3) and 4)

Sew 4 squares according to the pattern. Tie the potholder in a crayfish step.

Owl potholder

For the craft you will need textiles in three colors, a sealant, edging, and a sewing kit.

We mark the templates on the material. Cut out the resulting elements:

  • wings – 4 fabric, 2 padding polyester parts;
  • 2 dark and light eye parts from a dense piece;
  • body – 2 pieces of fabric, 1 gasket;
  • beak – 1 piece.

Let's start making:

  • We assemble the body patterns with the front surface facing each other, adding a seal. We attach the beak. Having fixed the layers, we attach it on both sides. We sew all parts of the material together.
  • Add light elements of the eyes and stitch around the circumference. We chop off the dark elements and attach them.
  • We fold the fabric patterns of the wings inside out, laying layers of sealant. We make a decorative seam in the middle. We trim the edges of the wings with edging.
  • We collect the owl. We attach the edging to the wrong side of the craft, leaving the upper area. We unfold the trim to the front side and grind it.
  • Cut off 30cm of the edging and mark the half. Aligning this point with the center of the open edge, sew on the piping. We turn it away.
  • Then we process the rest of the figure.
  • We form the ends of the edging into loops - ears and attach them to the body.

Kitchen oven mitts Bell

Such original caps are very useful for a teapot.

They can be made stylized as a Christmas tree, eggplant, or pear.

Let's sew a bell - a strawberry.

We will need:

green and red fabric;

  • fabric for lining;
  • heat-resistant gasket;
  • finished narrow binding;
  • threads, sewing equipment.

How to sew unusual potholders

Cut out the pattern according to the proposed drawing

Please note the required allowance of 5 mm

We cut out the blanks.

Sew on the sepals using an appliqué stitch. You can simply sew a zigzag seam.

Then we collect all the layers of the bell and quilt it.

We outline the top of the bell.

Using a compass we draw a circle from it (see pattern).

Trim the excess fabric around the circumference.

We process the cuts with binding. If you do not have a suitable ready-made trim in color, you can cut out the desired strip of fabric. Just keep in mind that cutting must be done on a bias.

We trim the edge of the product by cutting off the excess trim.

Fold the piece in half, after inserting a loop of braid into the corner. We sew a machine seam.

We sew the cuts.

Turn the finished bell inside out.

Round potholders

If you are just starting to master the skill of knitting, you will find useful diagrams with descriptions of round crocheted potholders for beginners.

Crochet potholders, photo

They are great for pots and can even be used as convenient trivets.

It is very important that DIY crocheted oven mitts are wide and have good density. Because their patterns don't involve moving from row to row (round shapes are created by spiral knitting), you won't spend a lot of time on this work

So, let's start crocheting kitchen potholders for March 8th in several techniques with diagrams and descriptions.

But first, a few recommendations for crocheting a round potholder for the kitchen with patterns:

  • When knitting, make increases in such a way that there are no waves, bends or other defects that distort the shape on the surface of the product. The potholder should lie completely on a flat surface;
  • To prevent homemade potholders from looking boring, use several rich shades. You can choose a gradient palette, that is, use yarn of colors that differ from each other by several levels;
  • If you have been knitting for a long time and know interesting techniques, you can knit drawings of animals, flowers and other motifs on a round base. Well, or sew them on a knitted potholder;
  • One of the latest fashion trends is lace home decorations. We crochet potholders for the kitchen using this technique - and this area will definitely look stylish!

Tip: you can tie additional elements to a round potholder. For example, it’s easy to make a ladybug potholder: modify the head and black circles for red or other bright wings.

Despite their simple shape, round potholders turn out to be very impressive: you can get design ideas from photos and diagrams, and video tutorials on crocheting potholders will help you understand the process itself.

Potholders made from old jeans

A very interesting option. And they are easier to sew than others because even padding polyester is not always needed. Denim fabric folded in two layers is itself very dense and will not allow any heat to pass through. The picture below shows the most basic and convenient model:

You just need to cut out the pockets with allowances, sew them together and stitch them to the same shaped back part made of fabric.

In addition to this option, you can make a very simple potholder out of jeans, which doesn’t even require a sewing machine.

To do this, you just need to cut out 3-4 squares and pull out the threads along their edges, forming a fringe.

Then simply sew the parts together using a regular seam, using a bright and thick thread.

That's all! Simple, fast and no heat to your hands.

Nuances of practice

To make this kitchen accessory with your own hands in home crafts, forget for a while about the existence of synthetic yarn. It melts from the high temperature of the metal frying pan from the oven and may not protect your hands, but will severely burn them due to the melting of the yarn.

For this reason, also put aside balls of woolen thread of any density and thin cotton thread. After all, a crocheted item must be super dense so that the hot surface that is touched does not burn your palms.

As you can see, the correct selection of yarn is the main beginning of individual handmade.

The description of knitting potholders is important in the technology of this needlework. The better and clearer the instructions and diagrams are, the faster you will master the process and avoid mistakes.

Sit, relax, tie a potholder

Mittens sewn from dense fabrics, knitted from all kinds of threads of various shapes and colors. Look at the photo of knitted potholders at the entire assortment: your eyes will run away from the shapes in the form of Tutti Frutti, all kinds of fruits, bees, flowers, and so on. But this is all alien.

Even during a short period of time at home, a woman relieves both stress and fatigue with a ball of thread, knitting needles and crochet. She will choose the design and color she likes.

The openwork and practicality of use for the kitchen will take very little time.

Potholders with colored patterns and jacquard

The simplest version of potholders, ideal for beginning needlewomen, are square products made with any type of satin stitch. These potholders are very attractive and will suit any style of kitchen due to the play of knitting with colors and shades.

Color changes can be done in vertical or horizontal stripes. Or you can make it a little more complicated and change the shades with squares, performing, for example, such a simple motif as “Chess.” It is obtained by alternating 4 knit stitches with 4 purl stitches. Having knitted 4 rows, we knit the second ones in place of the first ones and vice versa. Each of the squares is made in its chosen color.

In this case, the main background is knitted with knit stitches (stocking stitch), and the “frame” of the product and the pattern itself are knitted with purl stitches. Only one shade is used.

You can create patterns for such things yourself from any simple pattern, breaking it into squares, or use a simple cross-stitch pattern.

Potholder in the shape of a strawberry

Fruit and berry themes are the most popular among needlewomen. Its shape and color scheme prolongs the summer: in autumn and in frosts there remains a feeling of sun, warmth and freshness of the garden.

What you will need for needlework:

  • hook 2.5-3.0;

Flower potholder

Probably the most popular type of tack, made using a hook and floss. Configurations of flower patterns are quite common, it is very easy to find them on the Internet. Such popularity and popular love is explained by the fact that the floral motifs of beautiful potholders are in harmony with many types of design and interior solutions.

As a tool, it is best to take hook No. 2. You should also review the possible color combinations in advance and choose the tones that suit your taste: it is best to base it on the contrast of the two threads. In the example, red and white floss is used.

Heart

This pot holder would make a nice gift for Valentine's Day.

To make it you need to take:

  • fabric with a “heart” print in two colors - for the central part and the sides;
  • plain fabric - for the lower parts;
  • synthetic winterizer, thermal synthetic winterizer or flannel;
  • ready-made binding or strip of fabric (4 cm wide) for its manufacture;

We cut out the templates according to the proposed sample.

We mark and cut out the blank according to pattern A. To do this, fold the fabric in half and apply the pattern to the fold line. If desired, you can make the pattern in a full spread and cut the fabric in one layer

Please note that there is no need to provide allowances when cutting. It is advisable to take into account the direction of the grain thread indicated on the patterns.

Similarly, we cut out the second blank from a plain fabric.

Using the same template, we cut out a blank from padding polyester.

We fold the top and bottom parts with the wrong sides facing each other, placing padding polyester between them.

Using the second template, we cut out blanks for the upper side parts from printed fabric, and from plain fabric for the lower side parts.

Having folded the side parts in pairs with the wrong side facing each other, we secure them with pins.

We process the straight edges with bias tape. To perform this operation, it is better to use a decorative stitch.

Step-by-step instruction

Your potholder has two separate parts knitted; you need to sew them on with the same thread. All lines of strawberries are arranged in columns without a cape - consider their increase and decrease in the counting diagram.

We came to the third line, step back equally vertically and horizontally and knit, without separating, six stitches with a cape in the loop at the base. Each yarn over is made on the fourth row according to the pattern.

As soon as the berry is ready, you will immediately understand that you have mastered crocheting potholders. Take on other crochet items. And follow our series.

If you choose English-language instructions and patterns, remember some American terms in their patterns (pattern, template, chart): dc - double crochet, sl st - slip stitch and ch - chain. They have an interesting home crafts theme.

It does not differ much from those adopted in Russian examples. A four-millimeter hook is often used. And there is this expression: “slip a stitch.” And the products will bring you new satisfaction. Good luck!

Strawberry potholder

The next master class on crocheting is creating a product in the shape of a strawberry. The classic pattern of this type of crochet - strawberry - is made with red and green yarn using a No. 5.5 hook.

Preparing for work

It is advisable to carry out all preparatory activities in advance. This will save time during creativity: during the work process, everything you need will already be at hand. You won’t have to be distracted by searching for this or that material.

Yarn selection

It is important to pay attention to the color of the yarn and its density. Too thick will be difficult to work with, and thin will allow heat to pass through. The color is chosen taking into account the type of product or the wishes of the kitchen owner. Experienced craftswomen select the shade of the threads so that the finished product matches the rest of the interior details.

Handicraft stores are replete with a variety of yarns. For knitting potholders, it is best to choose:

  • Cotton – has been used for over 150 years. The products are durable, such potholders are not afraid of frequent washing. High-quality threads retain bright color for a long time.
  • Linen is a durable natural material, but difficult to dye. These threads are suitable for lovers of natural colors.
  • Bamboo is a pleasant thread with good strength. Working with such threads is pleasant and easy, but the cost may seem high.

Synthetic and woolen threads can be used to knit potholders. In the case of synthetics, it is worth buying threads from trusted manufacturers. A product made from low-quality yarn may become covered with pellets over time.

Types of hooks

The hook number is chosen depending on the thickness of the yarn. Manufacturers usually indicate the number of the suitable knitting tool on the label. For example, for wool No. 7-8, a hook No. 4-5 is suitable for yarn with a double thread of medium thickness.

Scheme

The schemes allow you to get the job done quickly and efficiently. If desired, you can deviate from the existing requirements. Finding patterns is not difficult; today there are many options for knitting patterns for almost any item. All you need to do is find the one you like and start crafting. Even a beginner can crochet potholders with diagrams and descriptions.

Simple diagrams describing the technology of work depending on the type

There are a huge variety of patterns for crocheting potholders. Below are the most popular ones.

Round

The easiest way to knit a round potholder. This model is suitable for those who have just begun to learn the basics of working with crochet. First, 3-4 air loops are collected, connecting into a ring. Then, by adding them, each row is knitted with any of the columns.

Add 1 loop after 3 knitted ones. Thus, each new circle of loops will be wider than the previous one. The process continues until the desired size of the product is obtained. A round potholder can be plain or colored.

It looks beautiful when a plain circle is tied with a brightly colored thread.

Square

Square potholders are even easier to knit with your own hands than round potholders. First you need to decide on the size. Square shaped oven mitts are easy to use.

The pattern looks like this: the desired number of air loops is cast on (focus on the size of the thread so that it is enough), and then, followed by alternating or repeating the stitches, knit until the product follows the pattern, with the same width and height.

When looking for information on how to crochet a potholder for beginners, you should pay attention to the square model, and specifically to the variety of its colors.

Flower

Beautiful potholders are easy to crochet in the shape of a flower. Even a beginner can successfully handle this model. Schemes with descriptions are presented in the table below. By alternating yellow, white and black threads you will get a daisy.

Loop designations:

  • B – air;
  • 1H – with 1 double crochet;
  • 2H – with 2 yarn overs;
  • B - without a crochet.

Heart

Do-it-yourself potholders in the shape of a heart are knitted mainly with double crochets and single crochets. Original potholders are made on the basis of 30-34 air loops. This interesting thing is knitted according to the following pattern:

  1. We cast on 34 air loops.
  2. Then we tie 15 with a single crochet, skip 5 and finish the rest with a single crochet.
  3. At the turn of the arc, we make 7 double crochets so that the hook turns in the opposite direction.
  4. Using the same pattern, we continue knitting on the other side until the desired size of the item is obtained.
  5. You should add 5 air loops from the bottom and the same number from the top of each row.
  6. The product is made in 6 or 7 rows.

Handicraft will become more interesting if you use red and white threads in combination with the step-by-step instructions provided. To ensure reliable items, knit with thick threads and crochet number 3-4.

We knit three identical plies

We knit two products with different shades. We connect the elements in a checkerboard pattern.

Strawberry

The strawberry potholder is knitted with three colors of thread: red, white, green. The berry itself is made from red thread. The seeds in the strawberry are embroidered with white thread in the form of small dots over the entire area of the product. The pattern for crocheting a strawberry potholder is presented in the table.

Green thread will be needed for the tail. Leaves can be knitted in the shape of triangles, connecting them together. A more difficult option is to make a paper pattern of a leaf. Using it, knit several identical parts and sew them. The finished leaves need to be sewn onto the strawberry.

Sheet

Knitted potholders in the shape of a leaf are best decorated in any shade of green, yellow, orange or red. This product can be used to complement a flower pot holder or any other pot holder for hot dishes. The sheet is not knitted with thick threads; its pattern is presented in the table.

Watermelon

Beautiful potholders are made in the shape of berries. To create an interesting “watermelon” product, you will need round blanks. How to make a potholder in the shape of a watermelon:

  1. It is necessary to knit a circle of red yarn until the desired size is obtained.
  2. Then you should disconnect the red thread, tie a white one and knit 2 rows of stitches in a circle. Oven mitts may involve changing threads.
  3. Then you need to tie a white circle with two or three rows of green thread, this will be the watermelon peel.
  4. All operations can be performed using a crochet hook of the same number. The main thing is that the thickness of the colored threads is approximately the same
  5. Then we will make black grains. They can be multi-colored - black and brown. The best grains are simply elongated drops knitted with dark thread, located between the middle and the edges.

You can sew a potholder for the kitchen with your own hands using this pattern if you have threads of the desired colors and a sufficient number of knitted parts. Sewing potholders will not take much time, you just need to make the correct and beautiful stitches.

Sunflower

Knitting potholders of different models is very similar. We also make sunflowers in the shape of a black circle. Then, along the entire perimeter, we crochet patchwork inserts in the form of petals with yellow thread. They should be short and consist of three to four loops in one row.

Piglet

An original and funny pig potholder, knitted in any shade of pink. To create a product in the shape of piglets, a large circle is made of yarn. It creates the outline of the pigs' faces. Then they knit a small circle - this is the future patch.

Eyes and ears can be cut out from the fabric of the desired color, and then sew them to an already knitted face. If desired, the ears can be knitted by first cutting out a template of the desired shape from paper. Before sewing all the parts, it is recommended to wash this patchwork potholder. This is necessary so that all parts fit equally.

Afterwards, the parts are sewn together, and the nickel is tied with light pink thread.

Mitten potholder

Sewing a mitten potholder is done using patterns. A sheet of paper should be cut into squares. You will need two figures. To make a mitten in the required size, we cut out the mittens.

General approach to the topic

We will not say that potholders are easier to knit than simpler things with which women begin crocheting. And knitting potholders for the kitchen is no more annoying than large things - like a tablecloth.

You can lay down for the future a set of handmade kitchen accessories in the same style or a variety of knitting techniques

In this process, everything is important: the choice of pattern, crochet hook number, color and thickness of yarn

Which patterns to choose

To make the potholders truly original and beautiful, it is important to choose the right knitting patterns. Let's consider this issue in more detail.

Potholders knitted with knitting needles can be knitted:

  • using patterns,
  • colored stripes,
  • using ornament.

The easiest way is to knit potholders in stripes of different colors. In this case, either a simple purl stitch is used or the simplest patterns are taken, such as elastic, English elastic. If ornamented potholders are knitted, then yarn of different colors is used. The knitting technique here is purl stitch. No patterns can be used anymore. If the potholder is knitted using patterns, then it is best to choose those that give a beautiful convex relief.

Braids and variations on the theme of crossed loops, checkerboard patterns, and the Estonian Viking pattern are welcome. It is better not to use openwork patterns - the potholders must be tight, but the openwork does not allow this to be done.

For potholders using ornaments, yarn of different colors is used

The simplest knitting method is to make potholders with colored stripes.

For potholders with patterns, it is better to use relief patterns

Selection and preparation of materials for potholders in the kitchen

The main thing in our work is to choose the right material and filler so that the oven mitts last as long as possible and do not cause trouble to the housewife.

PHOTO: vash.market Potholders should match the style of the kitchen

Fabric and felt

For potholders, thick cotton fabrics are best suited, such as:

  • chintz and linen;
  • cotton and felt;
  • jeans

You can use fabrics with a small content of synthetic fibers. It is not necessary to buy new fabrics; even old jeans, skirts and jackets will do.

PHOTO: izfoamirana.su It’s safer to use natural materials

Filler

Additionally, you need to prepare a filler, since without a layer, tacks do not provide any benefit. Suitable for work:

  • felt and fleece;
  • batting and felt;
  • terry towels and drape.

It is advisable not to use synthetic winterizer, as it has low thermal conductivity.

It’s impossible not to look at the lace potholders shown in the next photo. I don't even want to use these accessories. These are real works of art.

The good news is that every knitter can create these beautiful accessories.

Sequence of work for beginners

To knit a potholder, you will need the remains of any yarn and a hook that matches the thickness of the thread. The potholder consists of two parts - upper and lower.

Why use oven mitts in the kitchen

Decorating a kitchen with textiles is customary in past centuries, when there was not such a variety of all kinds of decor.

At the same time, such products, even in modern kitchens, perform not only a decorative role, but are also used for their intended purpose, protecting the hands of children and adults.

Such compliance with safety rules is especially important if the kitchen is regularly used for its intended purpose, for preparing food, and these accessories are necessary:

  • protecting fingers and palms from mechanical damage and temperature effects when in contact with hot kitchen utensils, dishes and other surfaces;
  • the ability to use potholders as hot pads, while the design of such a multifunctional accessory must meet a number of simple requirements and will require a special pattern;
  • the ability to create compositions with other textile accessories, such as kitchen towels and beautiful coasters for hot dishes, serving napkins and an apron or tablecloth;
  • decorative potholders are usually decorated with interesting decorations using all sorts of techniques, and if you think through their intricate design correctly and stitch it correctly, they can be used in practice.

The process of sewing and making useful kitchen accessories must be approached carefully and thoughtfully.

The wear resistance and service life of finished products sewn with your own hands depend on the chosen material and design, the quality of tailoring and the processing of all seams.

In this case, a certain fabric and filler are selected, attention is paid to the choice of design, which can be different and the overall design style of the finished products depends on it

Little tricks

If you don’t have the skill to knit an ornament yet, you can cheat and imitate the ornament by using embroidery techniques. In this way you can get real tartan and very complex checkered patterns. Initially, a fabric consisting of alternating colored stripes is knitted. Then, tracks imitating loops are embroidered on top of the canvas in a vertical direction.

Using embroidery - a secret method for beginners

By alternating the “face” and “wrong side”, you can get any ornament

In the same way, you can simply knit the fabric with purl stitch. Then a pattern is embroidered on top - be it a Norwegian star, animal figures, flowers. It turns out very beautiful and very simple. If everything is done carefully, the thing will look like a real ornament.

Heart

This pot holder would make a nice gift for Valentine's Day.

Potholders with shadow patterns

Kitchen items with the so-called shadow pattern look very interesting.

By matching it to the color palette of your kitchen or home, you can get a very harmonious design. In addition, the same potholders can be made using a simple hosiery method by changing the color of the yarn to create a pattern.

Video: Shadow pattern “Sponges”

Fabric potholders

To begin with, we will give you some preliminary recommendations regarding the process itself. They will come in handy in any case, no matter what pattern you choose.

So, what do you need to remember when starting to make this kitchen accessory?

1 You need to choose a fabric that does not fray and is easily washed off. A cotton base or linen is the best option. 2 Do not use flammable fabrics: synthetics, satin. Still, sometimes you have to take dishes from an open fire and you can accidentally touch it. Cotton will not catch immediately, but synthetic fabrics will instantly catch fire. 3 Be sure to make some kind of layer between the two layers of fabric, since otherwise they will only perform a decorative function, and they will not be able to get hot. 4 Before cutting, be sure to prepare the selected flaps: wash and iron. If this is not done, then after the product is ready and you wash it, it may simply shrink. 5 Check if the fabric is fading. To do this, soak the flap in hot water. If the water is stained, then do not use this material, no matter how beautiful it is.

This is especially important when you sew a potholder from several types of fabric. It’s such a shame to wash something once and then throw away an item that has lost its appearance. 6 Don’t forget to make a loop for easy storage of potholders. 7 When making a pattern, be sure to leave 1 cm at the edges for hemming.

Here, in general, are all the rules that you need to remember. Do-it-yourself potholders are not like sewing a coat, after all!

Potholder "Mitten"

This is the most standard option that never goes out of style. A mitten-shaped potholder not only looks cute, but is also very practical.

It is almost impossible to burn your hands in it. You can make the pattern yourself, using your own hand as a basis.

Trace it on paper, and then step back 5-6 cm from the edges of the drawing and form a rounded outline. If you don’t want to do this, then you can use our ready-made solution.

We present to you an option with a pattern, which in our opinion looks very decent, and it is not at all difficult to sew.

To make it you need:

  • Textile
  • Some kind of sealant, for example synthetic winterizer
  • Non-woven adhesive
  • Metal rings for decoration

Step 1. Then make a pattern, which is presented in the picture below. What size it is can be clearly seen on the ruler on the side.

Step 2. Place it on the fabric and cut out 4 parts for each mitten, 8 pieces in total: one straight, and the second in a mirror form. Then cut out a non-woven lining for each piece, 4 pieces in total.

Step 3. Now you need to cut out strips for the edging and loops for each mitten. Their size:

  • Edging - 7.5 cm by 32.5 cm
  • Loops – 10cm by 4cm

Step 4. Cut out the same elements from non-woven fabric. Glue the edging. Assemble the parts as shown in the picture and quilt.

Step 5. Then sew them together and turn them inside out. Sew on the edging and the loop. You can baste the details, or you can pin them with pins before stitching.

There you go! Not difficult, right?

Potholder "Butterfly"

This is a very convenient potholder, which is no worse than a mitten in terms of practicality. But her appearance is not so standard, but very interesting.

It looks like this:

And it is taken into the hand in the same way as in the picture. Many housewives who have sewn such oven mitts with their own hands note that after making them they don’t want to use a standard mitten at all, since this option is much more practical and it is easier to grab the hot part of the cookware.

Here is her pattern. In the same way as in the case of a mitten, calculate the number of parts.

Potholder "Mouse"

Mice are unacceptable in the kitchen of any self-respecting housewife! But not these cuties, in the form of potholders.

And here is their simple pattern. You don’t need a lot of parts here, just 2 for each and a lining. You can choose absolutely any colors, the main thing is that they combine with each other.
