Decorating a mirror step by step with your own hands - learn how to make beautiful decor according to instructions, photo review of original ideas and examples

Variety of design methods

The photo of the mirror decor shows several options on how you can interestingly and quickly decorate an object of any size and shape.

The decoration technique appeared a long time ago, is a popular craft and is divided into two main areas:

  • Glass decorations along the edge, right along the mirror. Accessories and jewelry are glued to the canvas, leaving free space for viewing. The design is applied with special paints along the rim, evenly or asymmetrically, and individual elements are drawn throughout the entire canvas;
  • Decorating the substrate on which the mirror cloth is attached. It can be a flat or three-dimensional structure made of wood, plasterboard, plywood, thick paper;
  • Drawing up an individual composition taking into account the design of the room, where the main part is taken by auxiliary materials.

Several wooden frames combined together and only one will contain glass, an installation made from scraps of plastic pipe with mirror mosaic elements.

Note: To make a mirror look harmonious in the interior, you need to choose the right size, take into account the color scheme of the room and style.

Mirror decoration options

There are a great many decor ideas suitable for different styles, here are just a few of them:

  • for the loft style, the frame for the mirror is made from leftover laminate flooring and pieces of brick;
  • in a marine style interior it is decorated with seashells and flat pebbles;
  • for ethnic - the frame is woven from straw, decorated with dried flowers, varnished, and dry reed tubes;
  • in Provence, light linen fabric and ropes are used;
  • an embroidered picture can become a decoration for a mirror in a classic style;
  • the industrial interior is decorated with colored broken glass and plastic spoons and forks;
  • for art, believe me, the mirror will be perfectly decorated with tubes of colored paper;
  • frame for a mirror in hi-tech style, mounted from pieces of chromed metal, tubes, bolts.

Paper sticks or tubes

Paper, one way or another, is in every home. For decorating mirrors the following are most often used:

  • glossy magazines - you don’t even have to paint them;
  • newspapers;
  • cigarette paper;
  • cardboard egg trays;
  • napkins for decoupage.

To make a frame from tubes, they are rolled out of newspaper, making them the desired length and thickness. They are laid out on an unnecessary substrate and painted with acrylic from a spray can on all sides. Afterwards, glue is applied to the back of the mirror, preferably a round one - the silicone you buy must be neutral, acidic can easily destroy the thin mirror coating. Paper tubes are laid out in the shape of a sun or a flower, dried for a day in a horizontal position, and a new piece of decor is hung on the wall. This design is not suitable for rooms with high humidity.

Sometimes plastic straws and pen refills are used instead of paper tubes.

Plastic spoons

The larger the mirror, the more spoons will be required. You need to cut off the scoops from them, which will later become the “petals” of the flower mirror, and paint them the same color or different ones, if desired. Next, a piece of fiberboard or thick cardboard is cut out, the main decoration item is placed in the middle, which should be outlined with a pencil or marker - parts in three or four or more rows are glued between this line and the edge of the frame. The frame is dried, a mirror is glued to the center, and every other day it is hung on the wall. This mirror will fit perfectly into the interior of a bright Art Nouveau style bathroom or romantic bedroom.

If you use the wide part of forks instead of spoons, the design will be no less interesting, but prickly. Using the same technique, a frame is made from buttons, small CDs, and parts of a children's construction set.

Rope

The rope or lace chosen is thicker; for a large mirror, a real rope is suitable; for a small mirror, thin but strong twine or paracord is suitable. The base is cut out of cardboard or fiberboard, glue is applied to it, and the lace is laid out turn by turn. You can glue the mirror at the very beginning, then glue the rope around it. For minimalism they use a bright, not too textured rope, for traditional - linen.

If you use threads and ropes of different colors, you will get a “rainbow”, striped frame.

Made of wood

A wooden frame will fit perfectly into any modern interior; it can be made from:

  • wooden clothespins;
  • Chinese food sticks, ice cream sticks;
  • oblique wood cuts;
  • slats, planks;
  • branches.

If clothespins can simply be attached around the perimeter of a thin mirror, then other options will require a little more time and effort. When you have access to woodworking machines and tools, the profile necessary for a beautiful design is cut from solid timber yourself. Wooden planks and slats are bought in a store that has everything for repairs. They also sometimes provide services for cutting timber - you can ask that the planks be cut at an angle to a certain length. At home, all that remains is to fasten them together, paint them, hand-paint them, and complete them with carvings. For a figured wooden frame you will need a jigsaw.

For eco style, a piece of plywood or cardboard is cut out, larger than the mirror itself, which is glued into the middle. Around, on the base, pieces of wood, pegs, sticks, large chips, thin cuts of branches, driftwood are glued and nailed - the mirror turns out to be recessed in the frame. If the decoration item is small in size, then it can be glued to a large cut of wood coated with varnish - it is better if it has bark. When ice cream sticks are used for decoration, they should first be varnished, painted, and painted.

A carved wooden frame is suitable for the Baroque style, decorated with driftwood - oriental, ethnic - decoration from thin branches intertwined with each other, wooden clothespins with folk patterns.

Seashells

Shells brought from the sea and the “shells” of snails used in the preparation of certain dishes can become an original decorative element. Most often they are used to decorate a marine-style mirror - then it is hung against the background of photo wallpaper depicting a sea sunrise or sunset. Sinks painted with bright colors will fit well into a futuristic or modern interior. Such a frame is most often placed in the bathroom, in the nursery.

If sea, river, or lake shells have lost their color, they are soaked in ordinary bleach, then washed, dried, greased with sunflower oil, and varnished. Next, take a mirror that has a frame or a plywood or wooden base. The shells are glued symmetrically, in random order - first the large ones, then, between them, the smaller ones. The frame is dried and varnished.

To complement shells, many people use pearls, beads, beads, and beautiful pebbles.

Mosaics, broken dishes

There is no need to rush to throw away broken dishes, especially if they were beautiful “in life” - the pieces can easily be used as decoration.

Usually used:

  • broken colored glass, crystal;
  • mirror fragments;
  • pieces of aluminum foil;
  • clay, porcelain shards;
  • broken ceramic tiles.

With special equipment, glass is cut into pieces of any desired shape. Decorations are glued onto a previously prepared surface according to the required pattern, the voids between the parts are filled with any grout, and decorated with pebbles, sparkles, and mother-of-pearl.

For the ecological style they use clay shards, Provence - earthenware, the high-tech hallway is decorated with fragments of audio discs.

Gold leaf

An artificially aged frame is the best decor for a living room, bedroom, expensive classic interior, pompous Baroque, Gothic styles.

Options for “antique” design:

  • gilding;
  • bronzing;
  • silvering;
  • patination.

Decorating the frame with gold leaf allows you to create a unique, luxurious item. Leaf is the thinnest gold film that is glued to the surface of an object for decorative purposes. It is produced in the form of squares with a side of 91.5 mm, but there are different thicknesses. To decorate furniture items, the thinnest is used - with a ligature weight of 1-2 grams.

The color of gold leaf is:

  • white - contains palladium, silver;
  • lemon - has a high percentage of silver;
  • green - an alloy of silver and gold;
  • yellow - contains 75% gold, silver, copper;
  • orange - an alloy of copper and silver;
  • red - has a lot of copper in its composition;
  • pure - almost one hundred percent.

The material is sold in notebooks, packs, rolls, lined with tissue paper. Created gold is produced in the form of a powder, which must be diluted by combining it with tinsel.

Materials and tools you will need:

  • wooden frame - best carved, the size of a mirror;
  • gold leaves;
  • glue - flesh, oil-based, alcohol-based;
  • paint for the background - if the gold coating is not continuous.

First, paint is applied to the frame, dried, carefully covered with gold sheets, polished so that there are no seams, and a mirror is fixed in the middle.

If you need to save a lot, instead of sheets of gold, use potal - thin foil that looks like gold, but without precious metals in its composition.

What can be used for crafts

Sometimes novice craftsmen ask the question of where to buy decor for a mirror and how to decorate the canvas. First of all, it depends on the method, the chosen material, and the complexity of the craft.

Absolutely any material is suitable to create a unique composition:

  • Matches,
  • Plastic bottles and broken glassware,
  • New Year's balls,
  • tubes,
  • Textile,
  • Natural material (shells, cones, twigs, flowers, eggshells),
  • Pasta,
  • Wire,
  • Beads,
  • Beads,
  • Buttons,
  • Rhinestones,
  • Paints,
  • Leg-split,
  • Colored paper.
  • For fixation and reliable fastening, use a glue gun, PVA, silicone, or superglue.

To give a glossy look, the product is coated with varnish with different effects (glitter, matte, tinted).

You can purchase the material at any hardware store, stationery, handicraft and creative shops, or find it yourself while on vacation at sea, in the park, or outside the city.

If there is a need for industrial decoration, engraving, etching, or enamel application, then you should contact a company providing such services.

Flowers

For a shabby chic bedroom, you can make a mirror frame strewn with artificial flowers. For this purpose, you can either use flowers and petals purchased for this purpose or make them yourself.

Flowers made from foamiran or satin ribbons are well suited for this purpose. You can also decorate the mirror with a scattering of multi-colored or plain large beads.

How to decorate a bathroom in an original way

At home, the most commonly used decor is a wall mirror. When decorating, it is important to consider where the item will be placed and its purpose.

A discreet, classic style with a large view will suit the hallway; in the bedroom you can hang a mirror painted with floral patterns; in the nursery, a frame made from old toys and scraps would look appropriate.

To decorate a canvas in a marine style you will need:

  • Wooden, flat baguette (slats) without patterns;
  • Glue gun;
  • Sinks;
  • Leg-split;
  • Scissors, ruler, pencil, brushes;
  • Acrylic lacquer.

Painting with paints

Everyone has seen beautiful stained glass windows made of multi-colored glass; this method of decoration is for those who dream of such a mirror. Here the choice of pattern is also limited by taste and imagination.

Tools.

  • Circuit;
  • Stained glass paints;
  • Brushes and acrylic varnish;

All this can be purchased at a stationery store.

Pattern application method:
  1. First, draw a drawing with a marker. You must have a ready-made, thoughtful sketch;
  2. We draw the outline next to the lines of the drawing; if it covers the marker, the pattern will be untidy. It is impossible to wash off the marker from under the outline;
  3. We erase the marker after applying and drying the outline. After drying, if necessary, remove unnecessary parts with a blade;
  4. Fill the stained glass paints, diluting them with a solvent for transparency, according to the sketch;
  5. After drying, we open it with purchased varnish. The decor is ready.

Detailed master class on manufacturing

The decor of the mirror frame is carried out using natural materials, fits organically into the interior, does not get boring, and serves as a beautiful decoration.

  1. Decorate the frame separately, then insert the mirror. The baguette will be alternately covered with dense rows of rope and shells on top, followed by varnishing.
  2. Cover the table with newspaper and prepare all the necessary tools.
  3. To use seashells, they must first be cleaned, degreased, and selected by shape and size.
  4. The purchased material can be immediately used for crafts; the found ones need to be soaked overnight in a solution of bleach (1 tbsp of product per 1 liter of water), rinsed well, dried, and sharpened edges.
  5. Glue the twine to the frame starting from the inner edge, moving along the perimeter to the outside. The rows fit tightly together without gaps.
  6. Glue shells onto the dried frame. Lay out a pattern of shells on the table, take one at a time and attach it to the base from the center to the edges.
  7. The decor looks neat if small details are laid out in the center and large ones on the sides.
  8. Unusual elements (starfish, spiral shells) can be glued on top.
  9. Cover the composition with several layers of varnish, insert a mirror, and hang it on the wall.

The original design will refresh the interior and add comfort.

Cold porcelain jewelry

The special plasticity of this material allows you to create very stylish buds, animal figures, stars and other three-dimensional images for decorating a mirror frame.

There are a huge variety of recipes for preparing cold porcelain (without cooking and with cooking the working mass). Modeling of products is carried out on a cutting board wrapped in cling film.

Completely frozen figures are covered with paints and transparent varnish. Flower buds and other decorative elements are attached using glue.

Wall mirror panel

Mirrors of various shapes are used in everyday life: rectangular, square, round, diamond-shaped, polygonal. You can give the workpiece any shape using a glass cutter.

The decor of a round mirror is no different from the usual design. The same materials and tools are used.

How to make a frame with your own hands

You can make an original frame from the remains of a plastic pipe. The composition does not overload the design and does not look too cumbersome.

To complete the work you will need:

  • glue gun,
  • Acrylic paints,
  • Tassels,
  • Stationery knife,
  • Sandpaper,
  • PVC pipe with a diameter of 5-10 cm.

Operating procedure:

  1. Cut the prepared material into rings 1 cm wide.
  2. Paint the blanks with white paint outside and inside and let dry.
  3. Prepare a sketch of the assembly on paper, taking into account the dimensions of the glass. Assemble the ornament by connecting the rings with glue.
  4. Attach the mirror to the dried base. In one room you can install several similar objects on a similar basis.
  5. They will only emphasize the style of the room.

Remake, cannot be thrown away

When you have a large mirror, the decor of which is based on altering the frame, it’s simple. But a different situation happens - an impressively sized mirror without a frame or with a thin metal rim.

You can’t stick it on cardboard, there’s nowhere to sculpt cardboard bricks, and porcelain on a mirror canvas is a so-so idea. The output is epoxy resin.

This option is not exactly budget-friendly and requires minimal creative skills. But the result is worth it.

To work you will need:

  • Thick epoxy resin;
  • Glass chips, beads or any decorative stones;
  • Brush;

Algorithm:

  1. Pour resin onto a clean, grease-free mirror and spread with a brush. Apply epoxy where you plan to place the decor. Stones look impressive in the corner if it is sharp, and at the bottom side if the mirror is oval or round in shape.
  2. Thickly sprinkle decor on top - crumbs, rhinestones, etc. Distribute and press with your fingers so that each pebble sinks into the resin. Add a few loose stones to the side. It should look as if the stones were scattered from the main mass. Leave to dry for at least 24 hours.
  3. After complete drying, fill the composition with another layer of resin so that the entire decor is completely drowned in it. And dry again. Ready!
