Black, white and more

Black and white colors in the interior, despite the seeming routine and boring, are actually stylish and even daring. It’s not for nothing that they are often used in modern styles – high-tech, minimalism. These two colors work well with clean lines and require minimal embellishment and accessories - in fact, they can become room decorating pieces themselves.

Rooms decorated in black and white do not seem dark or too light. On the contrary, they seem to radiate a special energy, making the rooms lively, even lush. This color combination forces you to focus on the details, and therefore any decorative elements will immediately catch your eye. And, by the way, there are also disadvantages.

Black and white laminate

On a note! White is far from the warmest color. Of course, a room decorated in black and white will look bright, but still this is a rather specific combination that has certain features.

Black and white room design

Black and white colors in the interior, especially for floor decoration, are most often used in “cool” rooms. This is the kitchen, corridor, bathroom. Tile immediately comes to mind, but laminate or engineered wood flooring can also be black and white. Some people think that black and white floors are too difficult to fit into the interior, but this is far from true.

Black and white colors combine well not only with each other, but also with other colors. These can be notes of red, gray or any other shade. However, it is not recommended to use more than 3-4 colors for the main range, otherwise the room will look tasteless and tacky.

The snow-white edging of furniture in the form of a ceiling and walls with double dubbing in black and decor in gray tones looks very creative

By the way, you should not use black and white in equal proportions in the interior - this will cause irritation. However, floors with a checkerboard pattern, where both black and white are used in equal quantities, will look quite harmonious.

Tips for decorating in black and white

black and white floor tiles

If the bathroom is small

They try to decorate small bathrooms in light colors. However, a purely white room is unlikely to seem cozy to us. The eye wants to “catch” on bright, contrasting accents in order to orient itself in space and take a break from the boring monotony. This is why you can introduce quite a bit of black into the interior.

There are several common techniques:

  • With white walls, painted or tiled, the floor is decorated with tiles with a graphic print (or “checkerboard”). A similar solution is often found in Scandinavian-style bathrooms.

The interior turns out to be very harmonious and psychologically comfortable, as in the photo below. Light-colored furniture and plumbing fixtures are usually selected for it.

Advice : if the bathroom is not very small, you should pay attention to the design of the black and white bathtub - it looks very original.

  • Another option is to use wallpaper with an elegant black pattern on a white background. To prevent the room from seeming too colorful, this decoration is used fragmentarily, for example, only the upper part of the walls or some area on which you want to focus is pasted over (see photo ):

  • If the ceiling is very low, a contrasting black floor will help to visually “raise” it. The rest of the room is made white. There is also a reverse technique - in small but very high bathrooms the ceiling is painted dark, thereby visually correcting the poor proportions.

  • Black can also be used for decorative elements. Dark details will stand out effectively, “drawing” a unique spatial pattern. Do not forget about plumbing fixtures and functional accessories, as well as the retro-style shower enclosure, which, according to the latest fashion trends, is made of black painted metal.

Tip : the smaller the bathroom, the more white it should be. Black is added in splashes, two or three strokes, avoiding locally colored surfaces. Sometimes a small monochrome painting or photograph is enough to “revive” the entire interior.

Predominance of black color

If dark colors dominate the bathroom decoration, it may seem gloomy. To prevent this from happening, you can:

  • Make black surfaces reflect light. For example, choose glossy or mirror tiles for the walls, and a stretch fabric with similar properties for the ceiling. The room sparkling like a black diamond will look luxurious, and there will be no trace left of the oppressive atmosphere.
  • Use wallpaper and textiles with a white pattern on a black background.
  • Add a touch of play by laying the floor with large “chess” tiles.
  • Accentuate mirrors. You can take one large one, almost the size of the entire wall, or several small ones, placing them next to each other. The baguette must be original, with an exquisite finish.
  • “Dilute” the black and white tandem with small doses of polychrome colors. Or use natural wood for decoration.
  • If the walls and floor are dark, snow-white plumbing fixtures, furniture and accessories will add the necessary brightness and concentrate attention on themselves, especially when choosing models of unusual shapes.

Decoration of floors, walls, ceilings and black and white floors

Black and white flooring is ideal for the bathroom and kitchen. Therefore, special attention will be paid to these rooms in the apartment. But in fairness it is also worth saying about the bedrooms and halls. Here, black and white floors will also look quite nice if you choose the right flooring material and other finishing materials.

Idea for decorating the floor and ceiling in a black and white kitchen

On a note! If you purchase laminate in dark and light colors, and during installation of the coating alternate the lamellas or lay them in a herringbone pattern, you can get interesting patterns.

Black and white floor in the kitchen photo

In such a room, it is best to decorate the walls with thick wallpaper with a predominance of light colors. A monochromatic light finish on three walls will look good if the fourth has a large dark-colored pattern. It is best to paint the ceiling white.

It is best to use tiles in the bathroom. To make the appearance of the coating non-standard, you can experiment with the shape, size, and masonry pattern. “Zebra” looks very cool in the bathroom - in this case, stripes of black and white colors alternate with each other.

Black and white floor with applique

The black and white drawing, enclosed in a marble frame around the perimeter, looks especially interesting.

In a kitchen with a black and white floor, white furniture with a dark countertop will look good. Black and white combined headsets also look great. It is not advisable to use a completely dark one, as the room may turn out gloomy. But with good lighting, sets and tables can be black. Bright and flashy colors, even with small inclusions, are not advisable to use here.

Black and white glossy kitchen - continued in reflection

Attention! Interior items and wall decoration should not match the pattern of the black and white floor. Otherwise, it will turn out to be “screaming” bad taste. And this combination has a negative effect on a person’s emotional state, causing irritation.

How to soften black and white contrast

The achromatic range is sophisticated and impressive, but is not for everyone. Romantic and cheerful natures will constantly feel the poverty of the color palette, and therefore are unlikely to be able to fully enjoy the minutes spent in a black and white bathroom.

Is it necessary to completely abandon the idea of graphic design in this case? Not at all, because there are several compromise options.

Bright color accents

Small “infusions” of color will benefit both the black and white interior and our psyche. Just a few bright accessories: towels, a toothbrush cup or dispenser, a mirror frame, curtains or a painting - and the whole interior will sparkle with new colors.

Floor design in black and white

Let's say the final decision has been made to use black and white shades in the interior of a room and to finish the floor in the same color scheme. But how to make the latter interesting and memorable, and not just conspicuous? Here you can experiment with styling patterns - the options may be as follows.

  1. Chess - the most familiar and understandable type of black and white pattern (however, not only black and white). It’s as easy as possible to do using regular tiles. Quite often, this floor design is found in the minimalist style. By the way, it is not necessary that the shape of the flooring elements be exactly square. If you lay elongated laminate planks in a checkerboard pattern, you can get a rather unusual composition.

    The tiles are laid in a checkerboard pattern

  2. Chess diagonal – an excellent solution for a small kitchen and bathroom, as visually the rooms will become more spacious and wider.

    Example of a chess diagonal

  3. Herringbone and "running" are performed using narrow or square small tiles. Sometimes these options allow you to hide the architectural flaws of the premises.
  4. A light/dark center and a dark/light perimeter are an excellent option for a corridor, bedroom, kitchen. For premises of any purpose. A fairly simple installation method, but requiring ideal room geometry.

Tile laying schemes

On a note! Various contrasting patterns can be made on the floor. The main thing is that they have clear lines, are harmonious, match the interior and do not look tacky.

Black and white color combo, graphic or geometric patterns

In general, there are a huge number of variations in laying and painting various floor coverings in black and white. You can apply a little imagination, and then the horizons for using these shades will become truly limitless.

Mirror as a design element

At all times, the mirror played a major role when using black and white ceramics in interior design. This is a universal element that can be successfully integrated into any design, complementing it with a practical tool that greatly simplifies the life of those who come to carry out everyday procedures.

Choosing a quality coating

An important condition for creating a beautiful black and white floor is a high-quality floor covering. As such, PVC, ceramic or stone tiles, laminate, parquet or engineered board can be used - in general, almost any type of floor covering.

Advice! For apartments located on the ground floor, as well as for private houses that do not have a heated floor system, it is recommended to use laminate flooring. This is the warmest type of flooring material.

But the most interesting compositions in black and white can be created with tiles.

Options for finishing and using ornaments

Ornament is a common element when decorating bathrooms using black and white tiles. Many solutions to help create a comfortable environment. It may contain Greek motifs or figures inherent in the culture of the ancient Roman Empire.

Laying tiles - preparatory work

Since tiles are the most common type of floor finishing in terms of colors, its installation should be considered. However, before starting work on the installation of the coating, it is important to carry out preparatory measures. They include preparing the necessary tools, as well as cleaning the floor from the old coating and leveling it.

Do-it-yourself floor leveling

To create a black and white floor you will need:

  • rubber and regular hammer;
  • perforator;
  • building level;
  • tape measure and pencil;
  • screwdriver;
  • spatulas - sharp and serrated;
  • tile cutter;
  • cross separators.

Tile laying tools

Types of crosses

Materials needed for laying tiles on the floor:

  • tile adhesive;
  • waterproofing material;
  • self-leveling mixture;
  • floor tiles in black and white colors.

Packaging of ceramic tiles

Only the most basic materials and tools are listed, but some may not be needed. It all depends on the initial condition of the floor, the room as a whole, and some other factors.

The first step is to prepare the subfloor. It is cleaned of old flooring, if any. You can remove it using a hammer, hammer drill and other tools. The corners are especially carefully worked out. Next, all debris is removed from the surface, and all cracks must be sealed. If necessary, the curvature of the floor is corrected - for this it is most convenient to use a self-leveling mixture.

Attention! It is mandatory to install waterproofing if you plan to lay floors with a heating system.

Waterproofing

Main types of tiles

The modern construction industry produces a huge range of different tiles.

Here are some of its types:

  • Ceramic (tile) is a universal material. Used for finishing walls, floors and aprons (wall panels) in the kitchen. Construction stores offer a large selection of tile colors and sizes;

Variety of colors

  • Stone is a natural material used for facing work. Also, stone tiles are used for laying floors. Very reliable and durable material. Mostly matte shades are always available, large sizes are available;

Made of stone

  • PVC or vinyl - self-adhesive, looks like linoleum cut into squares, a large selection of colors, sizes and textures to suit any interior;

Made from polyvinyl chloride

  • Mosaic - small tiles placed on a grid, already with a ready-made pattern or selection of colors. You only need to put it in a certain order.

Mosaic assembled

Note! When choosing ceramic, stone, or mosaic tiles, the floor may be cold. Therefore, heating should be carried out. Floors will be warmer with PVC or vinyl tiles.

It's not cold at all

Laying black and white tiles

After the floors have been prepared, you can begin laying the tiles themselves on the floor.

Step 1. First of all, sketch out on paper the pattern that should appear on the floor after laying the tiles.

Example of a schematic pattern

Step 2. Next, tiles of black and white colors are laid out on a dry, prepared floor according to the selected pattern. Marks are made with a pencil on the subfloor, which will then be convenient to navigate.

Tiles are laid without glue

On a note! There are also types of tiles on sale in which black and white colors are already included in the range of flooring.

Step 3. The tile adhesive is applied evenly to the floor, as well as to the back of the tile, but in a small amount.

Applying adhesive to the base

Tile adhesive is available in a wide range, and it is not at all easy for a novice master to make a choice. But a properly selected composition is a guarantee that the tile will not move under load, and the coating will last for many years. Our special article will help you make the right choice!

Step 4. Next, the surface of the adhesive on the subfloor is leveled using a wide notched trowel.

The glue is leveled with a notched trowel

Step 5. If the glue gets on the previous row of already laid tiles, then carefully remove it before it has time to dry.

Excess glue must be removed immediately

Step 6. The tile is placed on the surface with glue applied.

Laying tiles

Tile laying process

Step 7. The tile is pressed down from above, and separator crosses are inserted into the joints between it and the previous row - left and right.

Plastic separators are inserted into the joints

Step 8. All tiles are laid in the same way. In this case, you need to lay it, carefully aligning all the joints so that there is no distortion or violation of the geometry. After the masonry has dried (after about 3 days), the seams are rubbed with a special sealing compound.

Advice! Before you start laying tiles on the floor, it is best to prime the rough surface. Then the adhesion of the glue to it will be much better. And laying tiles should begin from the corner that is clearly visible when entering the room. Otherwise, there may be scraps of tiles in this place, which will be noticeable and spoil the impression of the renovation.

Floor tiles are an unpretentious coating and, as they say, easy to care for. In a special article we will look in detail at how to clean tiles on the floor and how to deal with dirt on the joints?

Color Contrasts

Contrasting color is acceptable for bathroom decoration in any style direction. Whether it's classic or modern.

  • The combination of shades in the proportion 50 x 50 is the wrong solution to the problem.
  • The proportions 40 x 60 or 30 x 60 look harmonious, where 10% is made up of additional shades.
  • Both black and light backgrounds can become dominant.
  • Black as the main color looks harmonious in large spaces where there is a lot of light and air.

For a small black and white bathroom, the white background should be dominant. White tone creates the illusion of increasing space, while black creates the illusion of narrowing it.

Selecting tile size

Which format is best for the kitchen? Let's start by studying the layout and size of the kitchen. Let's try to choose a tile size that will allow us to make as few cuts as possible.

If the kitchen is connected to the living room, we will begin laying the tiles from the point of contact with the panel or wooden floor.

You need to plan the placement of the tiles so that the cuts are in less noticeable places, for example, under kitchen furniture.

When choosing the size of the tiles, consider the layout of the kitchen. For rectangular interiors, large tiles will look best.

You can often hear the opinion that in small kitchens you need to install smaller tiles. But the small format means more joints. Larger format tiles using a minimum amount of grout create a uniform surface.

Advantages and disadvantages

The advantages of tiles include such characteristics as strength, immunity to temperature changes, high humidity, and exposure to direct sunlight. The tiles have a long service life, which, depending on the materials and production method, can reach 50 years.

Most materials used to make cladding slabs are very dense. Therefore, caring for them is not difficult. For cleaning, you can use quite aggressive detergents and cleaners.

The disadvantages of tile finishing are high thermal conductivity and low noise insulation. Although the problem of cold floors can be solved by installing floor heating systems.

In addition, the tiles require care during transportation, since if chips and cracks appear, they cannot be restored.

If only the top layer of the tile is painted, then the underlying unpainted layer will show through the scratches. This will lead to loss of appearance. The tiles are also sensitive to pinpoint impacts, which can lead to breakage or cracks.

Combination of black floor with other colors in the interior

Black glossy floor tiles will look impressive not only with pure white furniture, but also with furniture painted in beige, light green, gold, red or light gray tones. It is quite appropriate to combine black color even with warm shades, but at the same time there should be no more than three colors in the room so that the interior does not turn out tasteless.

The monochrome combination is the most classic; the black and white pair has always been popular. But this combination may look different depending on the pattern played out in the interior. The chess geometry looks solemn and impressive, which can be achieved not only by black marble floor tiles in combination with white marble, but also by black and white checkered curtains.

An interesting interior can be obtained if the black floor is supplemented with images of animals that have a similar monochrome color (Dalmatian, zebra, tiger). You can use “animal motifs” to imitate the patterns and colors of animal skins.

With the help of black and white floral patterns you can create a calmer, balanced interior. Orchids, roses, and umbrellas will fit perfectly into this color scheme. Against the background of a black wall, the white cap of a faded dandelion will look impressive.

Black floor with gold and silver

Combinations of black with shades of non-ferrous and precious metals always look advantageous. Gold gives the room a touch of palace luxury and at the same time warms it up, while cooler silver metals are closer in spirit to urbanism, hi-tech or minimalism. You can often see that black porcelain tiles for the floor have inserts or cutouts made of similar metals; shiny furniture and door fittings (handle latches, hinges), and plumbing elements (shower heads, taps) are even more common. It is much less common for a washbasin, bathtub or toilet to receive such chic decor.

Examples of combining black flooring with gold:

Black floor with red

Red is one of the main colors in Japanese style. In addition, it is widely used in eclecticism and the avant-garde, which is dominated by designs of geometric shapes. If the carpet is black and the walls are red, then it looks solemn if you add gilding to the interior, or aggressively defiant if you replace the gilding with “animal” designs.

Examples of combining black flooring with red:

Black floor with purple and orange

The combination of these three colors is classic, extremely effective and almost a win-win. These rich and bright two colors, when combined with black, can form slightly mystical combinations; their contrast evokes a stunning mood. And the black floor in the hallway in combination with purple irises on the wallpaper will be a sign of high style.

Examples of combining black flooring with purple and orange:

Selection of finishing material

You can make black floors in an apartment from the following materials.

Tile. It looks ultra-fashionable and expensive. Particular attention should be paid to matte or marbled tiles. To create a bright contrast in the room, you should make light walls and ceiling along with dark tiles.

It is not necessary to choose white; beige, milky and coffee tones will look beautiful. This little trick will visually enlarge the room and give it a stylish appearance.

Porcelain tiles. These floors look modern and tasteful. Black porcelain tiles will add depth to the room and create a calm and attractive interior.

Laminate and parquet. These coatings look very impressive. Dark parquet or laminate will give the room a feeling of reliability and durability. Natural materials will bring a special style and complete appearance to the room.

Installation of laminate and parquet is allowed in residential premises: bedrooms, children's rooms, living rooms. But in rooms with high humidity (bathrooms and kitchens), it is better to avoid parquet and laminate.

Self-leveling floors. This coating is characterized by the absence of seams, joints and irregularities. It is appropriate to install self-leveling floors in rooms with high traffic, such as corridors, living rooms and public places. Self-leveling floors are durable, wear-resistant and last a long time. They are completely easy to care for and have an impeccable appearance.

Carpet. This soft material will make the room as comfortable as possible. It is suitable for almost any room.

Glossy black floors will make the room look unusual and fresh. With a lot of light, a mirrored glossy surface will visually expand the boundaries of the room. And the matte texture will give the room originality and sophistication. This coating will make the room calm and create a soft and interesting accent.

Peculiarities

The design of black tiles is very diverse and allows you to use it in any room, from office, retail, residential, to swimming pools and saunas. It is important to understand that black color visually makes the room smaller, so you need to carefully use it in small areas.

Matte black flooring does not create a sharp contrast with other colored trim pieces, but is more similar to dark precious woods. The matte surface allows you to focus on furniture or other interior items, while the glossy surface draws attention to itself.

Rules for choosing floor tiles for the kitchen

When it comes to the size of kitchen floor tiles, it is common to choose larger ones than for walls. However, they must match in color or be of a certain contrast.

Tiles should be selected in accordance with the style and color scheme of the kitchen furniture.

Safety

An important point is the anti-slip coating, which is indicated by the symbol R and numbers. Kitchen tiles marked below R9 have a slippery surface and should not be used in the kitchen.

For the kitchen, the recommended markings are R9, R10, R11, which provide good safety.

Wear resistance

Another parameter that is important when choosing tiles for the kitchen is wear resistance, indicated by numbers. In this case, the higher the abrasion class of porcelain stoneware, the better.

For the kitchen, wear resistance classes III and IV are most often chosen.

Subtleties in finishing

When starting a bathroom renovation, you need to decide how large the room is planned for black finishing, and based on this data, develop a design project. You should not use exclusively black tiles in a small bathroom .
This color tends to “move” walls. To avoid the effect of pressure, you need to find him a worthy partner. It is best to resort to a classic combination - add white tones to the interior. Look what happens. White tends to expand space, create the appearance of absolute freedom, which means that such tiles can be used to lay out global surfaces. Black inclusions and details here should be given only a decorative role. In a bathroom with a small height, the walls are also tiled with companion-color tiles, and black tiles are placed on the ceiling. Thus, it is very easy to add volume to a limited space. The place of black tiles in a narrow bathroom is on long walls. Short ones are left with a white finish. This move will make the room less cramped, at least visually.

laying tiles in width visually affects the volume of the room

Shades of dark

When choosing a dark floor as the final part of the interior, many owners struggle with choosing the right shade. If everything is quite clear with black, then choosing between chocolate and wenge can be difficult.

There are absolutely working rules here, based on the perception of the color scheme as a whole, its interaction with the main components - walls, furniture:

  • give a boudoir, luxurious look to any room - deep rich purple, blue, anthracite-gray shades that seem black, but are not. One or two dark walls will enhance the effect.
  • For a white interior, the color of the floor is a decisive factor. Sometimes a chocolate floor and wicker furniture are enough to set the main tone. The overall appearance becomes warm and cozy, despite the snow-white walls and ceiling.
  • For silver, soft pink walls, a dark gray floor is chosen as a more sophisticated companion.
  • A play of matte and gloss. On dark brown glossy parquet (laminate) the corrugated upholstery of the soft group and fluffy carpets look impressive.

Any heterogeneity in the form of light veins or inclusions in the floor covering will reduce the degree of contrast, and deficiencies in maintenance will not be noticeable.

Black and white accents

Not everyone is ready for bold experiments and completely transforming the interior. There is a huge selection of black and white accessories for them. A great accent color that can liven up any room. You just need to add striped curtains, pillows, rugs or vases.
