Still haven't decided which ceiling to choose for your kitchen? Information about the decorative capabilities of different materials will help. Everything will be discussed in more detail later in the article. All the nuances that simply cannot be missed.

Features of the material

In the past, such a question did not even arise. Only whitewashing or painting with lime, and later with water-based compositions, was practiced. Today there are more opportunities and harder choices.

The kitchen is characterized by high humidity, the possibility of the formation of soot, condensation, and grease splashes. Therefore, the coverage should be:

  • fireproof;
  • resistant to temperature changes;
  • not susceptible to high levels of humidity;
  • capable of masking flaws and communications;
  • easy to clean.

The ceiling covering must correspond to the characteristics of this room

In addition, the appearance of the structures should be in harmony with other space decor and furniture. Modern materials, thanks to their varied designs, colors, and textures, make it easy to cope with this task.

Whitewash

The simplest, cheapest, and a couple of decades ago the only way of finishing. It is better to use lime whitewash for kitchens, as it has an antiseptic effect and is more hygienic than chalk.

The advantages of whitewashing include:

  • low cost solution;
  • possibility of self-coating;
  • vapor permeability of whitewash.

There are noticeably more disadvantages:

  • quickly deteriorates as it does not tolerate moisture well;
  • does not apply to the surface being cleaned: the whitewash is washed off along with the stain; whitewashing does not hide defects;
  • When temperature changes, lime begins to crack and crumble.

Types of materials and designs

Possibility to implement any design solutions

The modern construction industry allows the use of different technologies and materials for ceiling decoration. To make a decision, you should know the properties of each material, their pros and cons of use. An important criterion is the service life, which determines the lifespan of the decor.

The coating can be in the form:

  • smooth;
  • figured;
  • multi-level;
  • vaulted.

White matte color is always elegant

Depending on the materials, the ceiling can be:

  • tension;
  • panel;
  • tiled;
  • rack;
  • painted;
  • plastered;
  • covered with wallpaper.

Canvas as kitchen decor

Each type has its own characteristics and positive properties. The decision of which decor to choose depends to a large extent on the area and height.

Multi-level structures are only relevant for rooms with high ceilings.

Cassette ceilings (Armstrong type)

No, don’t think that we mean the most ordinary, gray Armstrong, which is used in all supermarkets and offices in the world. A cassette ceiling is exactly the same technology, only the cassettes themselves can be any color you like.

There are some with drawings, some in silver, some in bronze... You name it! The option is not bad, but it all depends on what the cassettes are made of. If they are made of thin plaster, then the option is bad (remember about floods), but if they are made of plastic, you can take them.

The only negative here is that they “eat up” 10 - 15 cm of the wall height. This means that if you have a Khrushchev-era building with a ceiling height of 2.20 meters, then a suspended ceiling is definitely not suitable for you.

Drywall - a couple of disadvantages and many advantages

Thanks to the use of plasterboard, there is no need for plastering work. And this saves time and money.

Smooth surface is easy to decorate

The advantage of plasterboard structures is the ability to achieve a smooth surface and decorate it with any material. With their help, all irregularities are perfectly masked, wires and communications are hidden, and almost any shape is created - bulges, curved lines, niches, arches.

Plus, in the space from the ceiling to the sheets of drywall, you can place a system of original built-in lamps. It will serve as lighting, help to visually increase the verticality of the walls, and serve as an original decoration of the room.

The only negative is the reduction in height

Significant disadvantages of plasterboard shelf covering are the reduction in the height of the space and the complexity of structural work.

No. 9. Plaster

Plaster, despite the emergence of many new types of finishing materials, has not lost its popularity, because it is an excellent option for finishing a small kitchen. Plaster has many advantages:

  • relative cheapness , since most compounds are not that expensive. If you do all the work yourself, the cost of repairs is further reduced;
  • the layer of plaster usually does not exceed 3 cm, so it is not able to noticeably make the room lower ;
  • the ability to apply the solution to any type of surface - you just need to choose the right composition and think through the sequence of work;
  • environmental friendliness and safety for health, because the plaster does not emit any harmful substances or toxins;
  • with the help of decorative plasters you can create a unique interior in the kitchen, and if you use Venetian plaster, the room will be transformed beyond recognition and will acquire a touch of luxury.

But there are also some disadvantages. The process of applying plaster is quite labor-intensive, so if you are not confident in your abilities, it is better to entrust all the work to a master. It is also worth noting that a plastered ceiling is difficult to clean.

TOP 8 advantages of a stretch ceiling

1Excellent camouflage of defects.

2No need to prepare the ceiling surface before installation work.

3It is easy to hide communications and a built-in lighting system behind the film coating.

4The film is resistant to moisture.

5Possibility of implementing various design ideas.

6Long-term operation without special care.

7Appearance.

8Ability to withstand a certain amount of water.

Stretch ceilings are an excellent option for a youthful interior style

The tension structure consists of fabric or film, which is fixed in a profile located around the perimeter of the room. Manufacturers produce matte, glossy, fabric, and transparent coatings.

Glossy stretch ceiling

The reflective surface of the glossy film adds volume to a small room.

Fabric-coated ceilings are more durable than film. They are resistant to mechanical damage, but partially allow water to pass through. If forced dismantling occurs, the entire canvas will have to be replaced.

Glossy surface adds volume to a small room

Film options, unlike fabric ones, are subject to mechanical stress and tear easily when coming into contact with sharp objects. However, they are able to retain water and can be repeatedly dismantled and stretched without replacing the fabric.

It will not be possible to do the tensioning on your own, because you will need special equipment and special skills.

Ceiling colors

Color solutions for ceiling decoration.

Black

The laconic black color is the ideal and luxurious background that makes the interior graphically clear.

White

Gives the room visual space, brings light and freshness into it.

The photo shows a white ceiling surface in a Scandinavian-style kitchen.

Red

Rich red color adds cheerfulness, liveliness and volume to the space, and a burgundy shade makes it more fashionable and impressive.

Brown

Noble and presentable brown, designed to create a cozy, harmonious and comfortable environment.

Green

Light green shades always improve your mood, enliven the room, giving it special brightness and richness.

Yellow

Has a strong personality. Yellow evokes associations with sunlight and brings positive energy to the atmosphere.

Pink

It will allow you to add tenderness and romance to the room and create a sophisticated and sensual design in it.

Grey

Moderate and harmonious gray shades are an indicator of good taste. They contribute to the formation of an elegant and serene interior.

Lilac

Aristocratic and sophisticated lilac makes the atmosphere in the space mysterious and a little mystical.

Violet

Fills the atmosphere with notes of charm and gives the room a special sophisticated beauty.

Beige

The most harmonious and natural beige color is a good design option for many interesting style solutions.

Blue

It is considered a rather original design touch, which creates very effective, winning and stylish accents that allow the interior to sparkle in a new way.

The photo shows a small kitchen with a blue suspended matte ceiling.

Orange

Gives the room brightness, a sunny, positive mood and creates a non-standard and interesting design in it.

Blue

It will add coolness and freshness to the atmosphere. Heavenly or turquoise shades will add airiness and purity to the atmosphere.

Plastic panels - aesthetics, easy installation and maintenance

Plastic panels are easy to install

For a kitchen with poor ventilation, there is no better material than plastic panels. They are easy to install even without experience, do not require much effort, money or time for maintenance, and withstand wet cleaning and condensation.

The variety of colors and sizes of plastic panels allows you to use them to decorate any room. When purchasing, special attention should be paid to the heating parameters and the absence of toxic gases during ignition. In addition, designers claim that plastic emanates “visual coldness.”

Plastic emits “visual coldness”

Plastic products cannot withstand strong pressure and are therefore subject to deformation. When installing yourself, you must be careful when fixing the panels so as not to damage the decorative material.

Seamless tiles

To decorate the kitchen ceiling, you can also use seamless panels, which look very impressive and original from the outside. The main thing in the installation process is to place one tile so close to another that the joints are not noticeable. The softness of the material and perfectly smooth edges allow you to create a visually monolithic ceiling surface.

In the manufacture of tiles, we use environmentally friendly, completely safe polystyrene foam material, on which, in most cases, a relief pattern is applied, reminiscent of decorative stucco. Attaching tiles to the ceiling base is quick and easy, using quick-drying glue.

Advantages of the material:

  • allows you to update the interior with minimal material and time expenses;
  • has excellent soundproofing qualities and good thermal insulation;
  • tiles are lightweight and small in size, installation is quick and does not require special knowledge and skills;
  • various options for relief patterns allow you to complement or combine several styles at the same time;
  • by lowering the slabs a little, it is possible to hide all the defects and unevenness of the ceiling;
  • After yellowing, polystyrene foam can be painted in any color.

The disadvantages include the short service life of the material; over time, stains appear on it. In addition, it is highly flammable, which is why lighting fixtures are installed from the ceiling at a distance of at least 25 centimeters.

This method of decorative finishing is suitable when you need to independently and quickly update the interior of the room. When purchasing a finishing material, it is important to pay attention to its strength, structure and pattern.

Metal panels - decor for centuries

Durability and budget

Metal and aluminum ceilings are popular due to their durability and cost-effectiveness. They differ:

  • practically unlimited service life;
  • resistance to humidity and temperature changes;
  • ease of washing;
  • non-flammability.

This kitchen will surprise you with its originality.

This coating is truly reliable and practical, but it can hardly be called environmentally friendly.

Despite the absence of seams, the metal surface does not protect against flooding.

Ceiling made of polystyrene foam boards

What are the benefits of polystyrene foam boards? The fact that they are very inexpensive, you don’t need to perfectly level the ceiling for them, you can glue them yourself and the ceiling looks good. Even good.

The only thing you should not forget about is that they must be painted on top. Water-based paint is best suited for these purposes. This ceiling smokes just like others, but you don’t have to wash it, it’s enough to refresh it with paint once every couple of years.

If a flood happens, then nothing will happen to the tiles if they are glued with “Dragon” glue and not “planted” on the putty mixture. If they were glued to putty, then they would fall off, of course. But then you can glue them with glue and everything will be fine.

By the way, now there are already slabs that, when fastened, do not have seams. The ceiling looks cast and not made of pieces.

Painting

Variety of shades

Even an inexperienced craftsman can paint the surface. Water-based formulations are recommended to preserve the ability to use detergents to remove stains.

Painted ceiling in the kitchen

A shade chosen to match the interior will give the kitchen space a special atmosphere. A variety of shades allows you to add any tone that will contribute to the luxurious look of any space design solution.

The main advantages of a painted ceiling:

  • ease of use;
  • finances acceptable for the family to purchase paint;
  • durability.

Matte compositions give an original texture

With the help of modern dyes you can give an original texture. Matte compositions are excellent for this, and alkyd paints help get rid of stains. There is one fly in the ointment in this “barrel” of honey. Paint is not able to hide unevenness and defects.

The most advantageous option is a white ceiling, which adds light, air, and spaciousness to the space.

Examples of figured ceilings

Curly designs allow you to radically change the atmosphere of the kitchen space and make it truly individual.

  • Geometric shapes (circles, squares). Always up-to-date geometric shapes have a simple and pleasant perception.
  • Wave-like shapes. Perfect wavy lines significantly soften the geometry of the room, making it more harmonious and thoughtful.
  • Complex figures. With the help of complex figures, you can not only create a bold and extraordinary design in a room, but also place bright accents in it.

Expanded polystyrene tiles - a budget trend in modern decor

Convenient decoration without tools

Decorating with polystyrene foam tiles does not require tools, special skills, or significant finances. This is one of the most budget-friendly claddings. A significant disadvantage of this facing material is the porous base, from which dirt is difficult to remove. The relief of the cladding makes maintenance difficult.

It is difficult to remove dirt from polystyrene foam tiles

This finishing method allows masking minor defects, but small differences on the surface. When heavily soiled, individual tiles can be easily replaced or painted if they cannot be cleaned using conventional methods.

Due to their flammability and ability to absorb moisture, polystyrene foam tiles can only be used in kitchens with a powerful ventilation system; they should only be laid at a distance of 20 cm from the light source.

Original ceiling

Products with lamination are better suited for the kitchen.

Plastering

Plastering a kitchen ceiling couldn't be easier. This decorative finishing option is the cheapest; the work uses a building mixture, which is applied to the surface with an iron spatula. However, this method has lost its relevance in recent years; it is rarely chosen for interior design, since doing it with your own hands is quite difficult, it requires skills and certain knowledge.

In addition, the plaster absorbs moisture well, ensuring a steam effect in the room. A plastered ceiling requires special care; it cannot be cleaned or washed with water; only re-application of the building mixture will help return it to its original appearance.

The main advantage of this coating is that it does not ignite. After applying the putty and using the correct processing technique, the surface looks smooth, fresh and neat. Using the mixture, it is possible to hide all unevenness and defects, it is environmentally friendly, safe for humans, and has a long service life. It is also important that after such decorative finishing the useful space is not reduced; in white or beige it even increases.

Disadvantages of technology:

  • labor-intensive, painstaking work;
  • the need to contact specialists.

To plaster a kitchen ceiling, giving the surface a perfectly smooth and even texture, a special mesh is often required. Only a professional master can realize his goals.

Wallpaper - room for creativity

Moisture-resistant wallpaper for easy cleaning

Moisture-resistant fabrics are used for the kitchen. When dirty, they are easy to clean. Paper products in the kitchen will lose their appeal after a couple of months.

The decoration of the ceiling with wallpaper is different:

  • price of materials;
  • masking minor irregularities and cracks;
  • possibility of painting, wet cleaning;
  • variety of color, texture, pattern.

Wallpaper is a variety of colors and textures

You should not skimp on the quality of wallpaper to avoid quick repairs. In order to save money, you can cover it with an ornament from leftover material. A cheap composition will add personality to the room, but will not last long. Washable wallpaper is quite heavy, so over time it begins to peel off under the influence of hot, damp vapors.

It is better to use plain models. Light-colored products visually expand the space.

Measuring operations

It is necessary to begin the process of wallpapering the ceiling by correctly measuring the required length of wallpaper and the number of rolls.

The main rule for the direction of gluing is the coincidence of the lines of wallpaper joints with the direction of sunlight in the kitchen coming from the windows. Here we decide how we will glue the wallpaper. Either along the length of the room, or along its width. By measuring the original width or length dimensions, we can calculate the desired continuous length of wallpaper in one roll. Correct calculation will allow you to minimize financial costs.

Important! When measuring the length of a strip of wallpaper, it is necessary to take into account an additional 3–5 centimeters on each side for the permissible error that may arise from uneven surfaces of the ceiling and walls.

Manufacturers produce wallpaper in rolls from 10 meters to 25 meters and a width of 0.75 meters. For ease of gluing the ceiling, it is recommended to take wallpaper 0.75 - 0.9 meters wide.

The measurement procedure will be more complicated if you have to combine the relief pattern of the wallpaper with lighting elements. In this case, the calculation begins with the main strip, in which the lighting devices will be located and the amount of wallpaper required for the ceiling design may increase.

Textured plaster - long lasting and beautiful

Decorative plaster in the kitchen

Plastering allows you to avoid the possible appearance of defects due to changes in humidity. In addition, washing will not do any harm. But the plastered ceiling:

  • gets dirty quickly;
  • absorbs fat;
  • absorbs odors;
  • will not protect against flooding from above.

Ceiling decoration and style

An ordinary modern kitchen is the epitome of stylish functionalism. All furniture and household appliances are designed according to the latest technology in the world, while there is nothing superfluous in the kitchens. This approach is not always correct, because it is better to arrange the entire interior of the house as one whole. If the kitchen is planned in a minimalist style, the ceiling is designed strictly, monochromatically and in harmony with the rest of the palette. The stylistics of constructivism and high-tech require sophisticated geometry and high-quality modern materials. In these style directions, a cassette design of an unusual configuration will come in handy. You can decorate it in the English style using soft tones and a complete absence of colorful accents. Decorative plaster and “boring” wallpaper are two acceptable methods of cladding in a neat English style. The color background of the Provence style is saturated with bleached tones, so a slightly careless appearance of the ceiling will be relevant. Just a few false beams will enhance the feeling of a provincial setting.

Ceiling moldings and moldings are compatible with many luxury styles:

  • baroque;
  • rococo;
  • classicism;
  • vintage.

Wood surface – ecology and naturalness

Wood is a fashion trend in the interior

The roots of using natural wood for decoration go back to the distant past. The following is used as cladding:

  • “lining” - planks of the same size, connected tongue and groove;
  • panels made of two layers, the front side of which is covered with valuable wood;
  • slabs impregnated with wax, which protects against moisture, cracking and lamination;
  • plywood treated with a special compound.

The lining is easily installed using the tongue-and-groove system

This cladding retains heat well, has breathability, sound insulation, and is low maintenance. However, it absorbs odors and moisture, is a fire hazard, and reduces the height of the room.

The cheapest and fastest DIY finishing methods

Most homeowners do the decoration of economical housing on their own, without the involvement of specialists.

Painting

The easiest way to repair is painting. The work consists of the following stages:

  1. Remove the old coating.
  2. The uneven surfaces are filled with putty (first the starting one, then the finishing one), after priming them. When the composition dries, sand it with fine sandpaper.
  3. Remove dust from the working surface.
  4. Prime the ceiling.
  5. Painting is being done. Use a roller with a long handle or a spray gun. The composition is applied in 2-3 layers, each subsequent one is performed perpendicular to the previous one.

Foam tiles

Pre-level the ceiling. Sometimes masters believe that this stage can be skipped. But then the material will lie unevenly, making the flaws more visible. Then a laying diagram is drawn up. It is better to stick from the middle. If there will be a suite or mezzanine near a wall, then start from the opposite side.

The work consists of the following stages:

  1. The ceiling is treated with a primer.
  2. Markings are applied. Two perpendicular lines are drawn from the middle of the walls to determine the center of the room. If a chandelier is used as the main light source, gluing begins from there.
  3. Apply adhesive to the edges and center of the panel, then press it to the ceiling. The setting time depends on the glue used and is indicated on the packaging.
  4. Next, in accordance with the chosen pattern, tiles are laid over the entire ceiling area. The outer elements are cut to the required size.
  5. The cracks formed at the joints are masked with acrylic sealant.

Wallpaper

For work you will need: glue, a roller, a plastic spatula, scissors and a stationery knife. At the preparatory stage, the old coating is removed. The wall is cleaned of dust and primed.

Pasting is performed in the following sequence:

  1. Dilute the glue according to the instructions.
  2. Cut the roll into strips with a margin of 20 cm.
  3. Apply the adhesive to the ceiling and/or wallpaper (indicated in the annotation). The edges and corners are especially carefully coated.
  4. Glue the strip and level it with a clean pressure roller (wide for the panel, narrow for the joints). The seams are placed parallel to the window, and not across, so that they are less noticeable.
  5. The wallpaper is placed end to end without overlap. Near the walls, excess material is pressed with a wide spatula and cut off with a stationery knife. It turns out to be a perfect joint. Small flaws will be covered with ceiling plinth.

PVC panels

To line the ceiling with plastic panels in the kitchen, a metal frame is required. Sometimes craftsmen use wooden slats as a base. But this should not be done, such sheathing is afraid of hot air, moisture and temperature changes.

Installation is carried out as follows:

  1. First, the frame is assembled. A guide profile is attached to the walls under the ceiling along the perimeter of the room. A ceiling profile is installed across the planned direction of the panels into the grooves of the previous design. Hangers are attached to the base slab and connected to the overhanging reinforcement.
  2. Next, install three pieces of plastic trim profile: one on the wall from which installation begins, two on the sides. Attach the parts to metal guides around the perimeter of the room.
  3. Then the panels are inserted into them and screwed to the ceiling profile with self-tapping screws and a press washer. In this way, plastic slats are installed up to the opposite wall.
  4. The last element is trimmed if necessary. Put on the trim profile. The lamella is inserted, the profile is attached to the wall using silicone glue.

Exotic - unusual, but impractical

The moisture-absorbing laminate surface is easily susceptible to mold and mildew.

In addition to the common ones, there are unusual designs. For example, from laminate. But such a coating is irrational, because the material has the property of moisture absorption and low resistance to mold and fungal formations.

Laminate ceilings are quite expensive

In addition, this finishing option is quite expensive. The only pro is to emphasize the atmosphere of creativity. You can create an exclusive coating using polystyrene foam.

Rack and pinion look great in the interior

Rack and pinion ones are assembled from individual elements. The design can be either closed or open. They are moisture resistant, thanks to the treatment of the “lining” with special impregnations, they look great in a rustic style interior, but they interfere with the height of the room and exclude partial dismantling.

Wooden lining ceiling

Now this is a very fashionable option. For example, ceilings in the Provence style are entirely made of lining, painted white. It’s beautiful, they can be tinted when they become smoky...

But if your neighbors flood you, the lining will simply warp, it will lose its shape, and cracks will become visible. Replacing such a ceiling is very expensive. Therefore, think.

Two-level and multi-level - complex but effective

Clarity of lines and geometricity

This design is rich in nobility, a range of materials, texture and geometry. Options depend on imagination, taste, and finances.

For multi-level combinations use:

  • drywall;
  • metal;
  • vinyl cloth;
  • tree;
  • rack

Multi-level ceilings will help hide flaws

Finish texture

Various ceiling design textures will help you create the most suitable design:

  • Most of the materials used have a matte structure. It has no shine, looks light and harmonious.
  • The glossy surface perfectly reflects light, thereby adding space and making the room brighter and more elegant. Such materials include certain types of paint and suspended ceilings. Moreover, the latter are capable of becoming a kind of mirror, reflecting everything that happens below. This option creates a “wow” effect, but requires some determination.
  • Satin ceiling is a transition between matte and glossy surfaces. It shimmers unusually in the light, but does not give off bright highlights.

TOP 13 recommendations from decorators

1Hanging ones perfectly mask the gaps between the slabs in old houses.

2Drywall for strength and durability should be covered with fiberglass.

3In multi-level ones, it is rational to place light sources.

4Before painting a yellowed painted ceiling, it is necessary to prime the surface with a matte alkyd compound.

5For a retro-style interior, it is better to replace plaster stucco molding with products made of foam plastic or polyurethane.

6In country and loft interiors, the open roof structure perfectly copes with decorative functions.

7Matte is more suitable for a classic-style kitchen.

8The glossy surface looks better in low, small kitchens.

9Red and black colors are an avant-garde idea for a spacious kitchen with a high ceiling.

10Drawings with different landscapes, flowers, sky and clouds are optimal for kitchen decor.

11Dust is not noticeable on matte ones.

12Glossy inserts on the matte surface of the coating increase the volume of the room.

13If it is necessary to hide defects, you should choose canvases with a contrasting pattern without symmetrical details.

How to choose the right decor for the ceiling

Ceiling in the kitchen: 7 finishing options

There are many ways to finish a kitchen ceiling surface. We will consider in detail the most popular of them:

Whitewashing or painting

The only difference is in the composition that is applied as a finishing coat. In the first case, it is lime or chalk, in the second, any suitable paint. It must be admitted that it is cheaper to whitewash the base, but the result may not be entirely good. Especially if you apply whitewash the old fashioned way, with a brush. If you use a spray bottle or roller, the solution will lie smoothly and beautifully.

Paint is preferable, although more expensive. It provides great decorative possibilities and is easier to apply. Regardless of the type of finishing coating, this method has significant advantages:

  • High maintainability. If necessary, you can paint over the stain or quickly and easily repaint the entire surface.
  • Low cost of work.
  • Safety if an environmentally friendly coloring composition is used.
  • Possibility of wet cleaning, provided that washable paint is selected.

Among the disadvantages, it should be noted the need for careful preparation of the base. It must be smooth, without the slightest defects, since the coloring layer will not be able to cover them. Overall, this is perhaps the best kitchen ceiling decor among the economy class finishing options. At low cost you can get a very attractive result that is suitable for a wide variety of interiors.

Wallpaper

An ambiguous solution that is used quite rarely. It is assumed that the strips are glued to a previously leveled and primed base. If the material is loose and thick, such as foam vinyl, small unevenness may be left. They will be invisible under the wallpaper. Let us list the advantages of this design:

  • Lots of design options. You can choose canvases with a pattern or plain ones, and combine them in various ways.
  • Relatively low cost.
  • Ability to do the work yourself.

Among the disadvantages, it is worth noting low moisture resistance. Even if the manufacturer positions the wallpaper as washable, light wet cleaning is preferable. This may not be enough for the kitchen. If the upstairs neighbors flood, the decoration will most likely be hopelessly ruined. In addition, gluing strips to a vertical base is inconvenient and quite difficult.

If you stick wood-look wallpaper between the false beams, you will get an excellent imitation of a wooden ceiling

Natural wood

Various implementation options are possible: from luxury wooden panels to inexpensive lining. Despite the significant difference in cost, all varieties have common advantages:

  • Environmental friendliness. The tree breathes, collecting excess moisture and releasing it as needed. It is absolutely safe for living organisms.
  • Attractive appearance, especially for expensive wood species.
  • Various ways of decorating.

There are quite a lot of disadvantages. First of all, it is low resistance to moisture. Wood absorbs water and becomes deformed. Damp wood is a favorable environment for the development of mold and fungi. To prevent this from happening, it is necessary to treat the material with special compounds. It is carried out regularly. In addition, the disadvantages include the flammability of wood, difficulty in processing and high cost.

Expanded polystyrene boards

Foam boards, or their more expensive polystyrene foam counterparts, were very popular not too long ago. This had many advantages:

  • They hide small defects in the base due to thickness and relief.
  • Low price, minimal in the economy segment.
  • Maintainability. A damaged plate can be easily replaced.
  • Simple and quick installation, which is quite accessible to a novice master.
  • Wide choice of design.

The solution has many disadvantages. Cleaning tiles is quite difficult, especially if they are cheap, porous foam. The latter also absorbs odors and dirt and turns yellow over time. The plates are flammable and release extremely toxic gas after ignition. A large number of joints does not look very good. True, seamless models are also available, but their cost is slightly higher.

Polystyrene ceiling tiles can be not only white

PVC or MDF panels

A type of suspension system that uses panels made of plastic or MDF. The properties of the structure largely depend on the material of the elements. Thus, plastic is moisture resistant, easy to clean and can imitate almost any coating. But at the same time, it is afraid of mechanical damage, it is flammable, and low-quality lamellas can release toxic substances. MDF plates are durable, easy to maintain and beautiful. But they are quite sensitive to moisture and flammable.

The advantages of both types of panel ceilings include:

  • No need to prepare the base. All defects, even significant ones, will be hidden.
  • Possibility to hide utility lines behind slats.
  • Maintainability. A plate that has become unusable can be easily replaced.
  • Simple installation that you can do yourself. Plastic and MDF plates have special latches, thanks to which they are easily connected into a continuous sheet.

Among the disadvantages, it should be noted that the height of the room is reduced by an average of 100-150 mm and the specific disadvantages inherent in each type of panel.

False ceiling in the kitchen

This is the name of a system that involves fastening profiles that become a frame for installing the ceiling covering. Creation of multi-level structures is allowed. There are several types of suspended structures:

  • from plasterboard;
  • rack and pinion;
  • cassette.

Plasterboard finishing is not very suitable for a kitchen area, especially if it is located in an apartment in a multi-storey building. The material absorbs moisture and under its influence becomes unusable. The moisture-resistant variety of gypsum plasterboard behaves somewhat better, but it is unlikely to withstand water pouring from above in the event of an accident with the neighbors.

Depending on the finish of the gypsum base, which can be painting or wallpaper, the cleaning method is also chosen. Usually dry, rarely wet. This may not be enough for the cooking area. Otherwise, plasterboard is very good for arranging a hanging system. It is easy to process and install, suitable for multi-level structures, and easy to finish.

For the kitchen it is better to choose moisture-resistant drywall, otherwise the structure may suffer from moisture

A slatted ceiling in the kitchen is in demand. In this case, instead of the gypsum plasterboard frame, it is sheathed with narrow panels-slats made of metal or plastic. They are placed close to each other or at some distance. The latter option looks attractive, but is rarely used for cooking areas due to the difficulty of maintenance.

Plastic slats are unpretentious. They are easy to clean, do not absorb odors and dirt, and are available in a variety of colors and textures. Their weak points are sensitivity to mechanical stress and ultraviolet radiation, and flammability. Low quality plastic can be toxic. Metal is superior to PVC in many ways. It is durable, hygienic, resistant to UV radiation and moisture. True, this does not apply to low-quality rack elements.

Rack structures can be used as part of a multi-level structure

Cassette systems are better known under the name of one of the Armstrong brands. Quadrangular cassettes are installed on the frame and form a decorative covering. Its properties depend on the panel material. It can be thin plaster, a type of plastic, or metal. The first one is definitely not suitable for kitchen conditions, but the others are quite suitable. You should not choose cellular and lattice models. They will be very difficult to keep clean.

The common advantages of all suspended structures can be considered:

  • Virtually unlimited decorative possibilities. These can be simple, perfectly flat ceilings or complex multi-level structures of the most bizarre configurations.
  • The ability to disguise utility lines and other systems.
  • No need to level the base.

The main disadvantage is the reduction in the height of the walls. About 100-150 mm is “eaten up”, more for multi-level compositions. Therefore, for Khrushchev houses and other houses with low ceilings, such structures are most often unacceptable.

For cassette systems, it is better to choose metal or plastic panels. Plaster will quickly deteriorate

Tension fabrics

To some extent, this is also a type of suspended structure, with the difference that a durable panel is mounted in the wall-mounted baguettes. It can be of two types: from PVC film or from special durable fabric. Their properties vary significantly.

Fabric cloth

To make it, strong threads are used, from which fabric is produced on a loom. Thanks to this, it has a number of advantages:

  • Significant width, which allows for seamless coating over large areas.
  • Possibility of painting or painting. The fabric can withstand more than 10 dyeings.
  • High strength. Accidental mechanical damage is not scary.

The most significant of the disadvantages is low elasticity. The canvas hardly stretches, so if the neighbors upstairs have an accident, it will not protect against large amounts of water. Moisture spoils the appearance of the fabric, leaving indelible stains on it. It is not recommended to wash such a surface. The choice of design is small.

Expert advice

The choice of ceiling for the kitchen depends on many factors. Before choosing a kitchen ceiling design, it is important to determine the maximum height of the structure, its color scheme, texture and ergonomics.

Ceiling lights should illuminate those areas that are used most often. There is no point in lighting a space where no one is cooking or sitting. It is important to immediately determine the location of the main chandelier and auxiliary elements.

Life hack from experts: The ceiling, which has become part of the wall decoration, looks original. To do this, designers apply to the ceiling some of the wallpaper or decorative panels used to decorate the walls.

In addition, lamps can be a continuation of the kitchen set, matching in style and color scheme.

  • The design of the kitchen ceiling begins with zoning the entire room. The work area, as a rule, is illuminated by small lamps, and the dining set is highlighted by large and bright chandeliers, giving the space a solemn look.
  • The color of the kitchen ceiling depends on the preferences of the home owners: conservatives do not see the ceiling in bright colors, preferring traditional milky and white shades. It is considered more modern to highlight the ceiling in the color of the flooring.

If we talk about kitchens with low ceilings (Khrushchev), designers advise choosing lighter shades for the design of the ceiling canvas. Then the space visually becomes larger, the height of the ceilings increases.

If the height of the ceilings allows, multi-level structures of varying complexity are created, combining plasterboard and PVC ceilings.
