Glass or ceramic vases, painted and decorated by yourself, can be an excellent gift, wedding decoration or decorative item for your home. Hand painting on glass/ceramics, depending on the desired design and technique, can be either complex, requiring skills, or very simple, accessible to beginners.
Decoration materials
You can decorate the surface of the vase using available materials. However, when choosing consumables, it is important to consider the style in which the product will be made.
The finished craft should fit well into the interior space. Experts recommend taking the choice of consumables seriously.
To create a vase in a classic and ethnic style, choose calm shades and natural materials.
These include:
- Natural wood;
- Thick paper;
- Small pebbles;
- Shells;
- Seeds;
- Cereals.
If the product is made in an antique or colonial style, then a rich palette is selected for this. The design should contain vintage elements with unusual ornaments, images of animals and tropical plants.
To create such crafts choose:
- Gypsum putty;
- Alabaster;
- Special napkins for decoupage;
- Bright colors in warm shades;
- Beads;
- Rhinestones;
- Glitters.
Modern options are based on convenience and comfort. Items should have a simple silhouette, calm colors and a small amount of decor. What is used for this?
To work you will need:
- Scotch tape of different widths;
- Jute rope or twine;
- Pieces of decorative fabric;
- Various stickers;
- Thin lace.
By combining several decorations, it is possible to create exclusive decorations that fit perfectly into any stylistic direction.
Decoration features
You can decorate a glass vase from a variety of materials, from artificial flowers to pasta. Each type of decoration has its own characteristics, execution technique, and degree of complexity. It is interesting that hand made does not exclude a creative approach, a combination of the most incongruous things. So, you can follow the instructions exactly, or you can add something of your own.
The main thing is that the result brings you pleasure.
Vase decor using tape
This option is recommended for use with plain glass containers. Thin tape will help you create an unusual design. To make the lines expressive, you will need to use paint in an aerosol can.
For needlework you will need:
- Tall glass vase;
- Thin tape;
- Gold or silver paint in a can;
- Degreaser;
- Soft fabric.
First, the surface of the vase is thoroughly cleaned with a degreaser. Thanks to this composition, coloring pigments are better fixed on the glass base.
After this, we glue narrow tape around the perimeter of the vase. It is not recommended to maintain a clear drawing. To make the product unusual, we place the sticky lines in a chaotic manner.
Next, paint the entire surface of the vase with spray paint. Each layer should dry for approximately 30 minutes. For a bright interior accessory, on average you will need 2 to 3 layers of bright dye.
When the paint is completely dry, you can remove the tape. The adhesive tape must be removed carefully so as not to deform the colored shell. The photo shows the finished interior decor.
Caring for painted glass objects
Decorative glass objects painted with paints cannot be used in everyday life without following certain rules. Of course, you can coat the products with varnish, which will make them more durable and protect them from scratches (many paints are sold complete with a suitable varnish), but even in this case, adhere to the following care rules:
- Do not place painted glassware in the dishwasher or use detergent.
- Do not soak for a long time, do not wipe with force.
- The best way to clean a painted glass piece is to gently wipe it with a soft cloth dampened in warm water.
- To improve the water and light resistance of the product, apply a thin layer of varnish to the painted surface with a wide brush immediately after the paint has dried.
Pique technique for a vase
This decoration technique dates back to ancient times. The main feature is the use of painting based on dots of different sizes. In addition, the color scheme is taken into account here.
To work, you must use a special acrylic-based enamel. Thanks to her, it is possible to carry out contour painting without artistic skills. What do they use for work?
For the creative process you will need:
- Acrylic dyes for glass;
- Degreaser;
- Soft fabric;
- Sketch of the image.
The creation technique includes the following steps:
- The glass base must first be degreased. To do this, treat the entire area of the vase with a small amount of liquid;
- After this, we proceed to applying the contour dye. The diameter of the dot can be controlled by the amount of coloring pigment and the force of pressure on the container;
- For beginning artists, the technology of using a paper template is suitable. It is fixed inside the glass container with tape. After this, a bright pigment can be applied along the contour;
- If a defect appears on the surface, it must be removed before the dye has time to dry. The fact is that it is quite difficult to remove acrylic-based enamel without using a special composition;
- In the process of applying dotted decor, it is recommended to maintain the interval between elements. The photo shows several options for inspiration.

DIY stained glass
Stained glass painting on the surface of glass parts looks aesthetically pleasing and luxurious. With the right combination of shades, it is possible to obtain an unusual decor using a minimum amount of consumables.
To work, use a special contour on an acrylic base for a glass surface.
- In addition, it is important to choose the right stained glass paints.
- The glass surface must first be degreased so that the coloring pigments are firmly attached to the base.
- After this, a sketch is used, which is located in the inside of the vase.
- Professional artists can improvise on their own.
- Artistic skills allow you to create an exclusive interior for the accessory.
- Each layer of colored contour must dry for 2 hours. A regular hairdryer will help speed up the polymerization rate.
- To do this, it is enough to heat the decorative part for 15 minutes.
After which you can proceed to filling the interior. To do this, you can use acrylic glass pigments. Unlike contour, their drying speed is 1 hour.
If a hairdryer is used for work, the distance between the vase and household appliances should be 40 cm. The hot air flow will spread evenly over the surface of the glass.
Let's talk about some nuances
To paint a vase with acrylic paints, you need to be patient and allocate a certain amount of time for this work. It’s easy to fantasize and bring your ideas to life if you know exactly what you ultimately want to get. Painting is a rather labor-intensive process. It is important to do everything carefully and not to rush. If the vase is floor-standing, then painting will require even more effort and time. But if you use masking tape as a handy stencil, you can decorate it quickly enough. It is necessary to approach the choice of paints that match the color very carefully. Unusual shades: silver, gold, pastel, copper, black and white will turn a completely unremarkable glass vase into a luxurious piece of designer decor.
