Having a shoe rack in the closet can significantly save space
Are you interested in filling your closet like a shoe rack? I propose to consider together the most common variations of such an accessory and become familiar with the features of their installation. Visual photo illustrations will help us with this.
Manufacturing process
Let's take as an example a standard rectangular shelf with parameters 250x300x1100 mm.
- Transfer the measurements from the drawing onto the boards.
We mark the boards according to the required dimensions using a pencil and ruler
- Start cutting. It is advisable to make the cut with a jigsaw; it will ensure even cuts.
We lay the boards on a flat surface and cut out the necessary parts from them along the previously outlined lines
- Sand every detail, cover with stain and varnish.
We coat all parts with two layers of varnish
- Start assembling the shelf. Step back 8 mm from the ends, draw two lines parallel to the cuts.
- On these lines, mark two points at a distance of 6 cm from the edge, drill holes for self-tapping screws on them.
Drill holes at the mounting points
- Do the same with the bottom piece of the structure.
- Attach the side parts to the bottom board and secure with self-tapping screws.
- Attach the second board.
- Attach the brackets to the ends of the side blanks of the structure.
- Drill holes in the wall for dowels, insert screws, and tighten.
- Hang the finished structure.
DIY wooden wardrobe
It is advisable to make open shelves to simplify the search for clothes. As an option, you can make shelves with glass doors.
Basic structural elements
The basic elements used to create a wire closet can be found in building departments. Features of their use are presented in the table. A mesh wardrobe system can be made either from separate parts or be a completely ready-made option with a fixed set of parts and components.
Rail | The main structural element that is attached to the wall with dowels. It has mounting holes for system elements. |
Rack | When installing a spacer system, the rack is the main load-bearing element that is attached to the ceiling, floor or wall. Can also be combined with rail. |
bracket | This element is installed in special grooves in racks or rails. Shelves, baskets, drawers and other wardrobe elements are attached to it. |
Basket | There are 2 varieties: static and retractable. The first is a simple mesh box. The second looks similar, but has a retractable rail design. This greatly simplifies the operation of the type of furniture. Also, such a mechanism does not require lubrication. Both types are attached to the side walls or to a metal base. They also differ in depth and size. |
Hanging basket | It looks like a regular basket, but is attached to the shelves and axles with special grips. This structure can move left and right if the supporting base provides such a possibility. |
Shoe organizer | Mesh inclined shelves are used for dressing rooms and are fixed statically or on a pull-out basis. They are used to store shoes that need to be cleaned first, as dirt can fall onto the lower shelves. |
Mesh shelf | A non-movable element for a dressing room is presented in the form of a mesh platform for things. This part is attached to the side walls, rails, and also with the help of racks. |
Drawers | An analogue of a mesh pull-out basket, but made of wood or plastic, it is most often used in closed wardrobes. |
Facade doors | An optional element in the form of a facade is used as a design solution to give a certain style to the wardrobe. It is also used in closed structures to separate things from the rest of the room. |
Do-it-yourself wardrobes vary in the number of modules used. It can consist not only of the main parts, but also of those that are not provided for by the design of the mechanisms.

Filling your closet
Even a modest-sized dressing room will help rid the room of clutter. The functionality of a dressing room is determined by its contents. Several practical recommendations will help you competently resolve the arrangement issue:
- The number of drawers, shelves and racks is thought out in advance. The more carefully each part of the design is thought out, the more functional the dressing room as a whole will be;
- The internal content directly depends on the area of the complex itself. Shelves and racks are installed taking into account the spaces between them and the overall proportions;
- Pay attention to the location of the hanging rod: on the one hand, it should be easy to reach, and on the other, it should not be located too low so that dresses or skirts touch the floor;
- Don’t be afraid to experiment; thanks to modern filling devices, original and practical storage systems for things and shoes can be created.
If you decide to dedicate an entire room to a wardrobe, you will have to take into account a few more nuances. First of all, provide at least a comfortable passage in the dressing room, because you will have to move around this space. Maximum convenience will be provided by the presence of full-length mirrors, floor hangers and an ironing board.
Convenient filling will allow you to keep dresses and suits always ready for trying on.
Let us dwell in more detail on the description of storage systems for the dressing room.
Boxes
Most people prefer to use closed boxes, as they protect things from dust and other contaminants. Large drawers are used to store bed linen, and smaller options are used for necessary small items. If desired, additional dividers are installed in the drawers for even greater convenience in placing the necessary items. Ideally, drawers should extend to their full depth and ¾ of the size.
Often drawers are additionally equipped with closers.
In order not to get confused about which box contains what, there are models with transparent front panels through which the contents are visible.
Shelves
These elements are retractable and fixed. The width, as a rule, does not exceed 30-40 cm. If the shelf is fixed, then the depth should be no more than 100 cm, otherwise it will be very inconvenient to get anything out. If the design is retractable, choose the parameters that suit you personally.
Maximum comfort can only be achieved by following the principles of ergonomics.
Baskets and boxes
Most often, things intended for ironing are stored in baskets. This is very convenient, because mountains of washed laundry do not lie in plain sight and do not take up precious space. Baskets are made of wood, metal and even fabric.
A design whose purpose is to save space should not take up a single extra centimeter.
If desired, and also provided that the size of the dressing room allows, such baskets are installed separately from the general complex and are equipped with wheels for ease of movement.
Space for shoes
This part of the dressing room depends on the number of shoes, as well as on the dimensions of the complex. If the dressing room is a whole room, then there will be more space for shoes. The simplest and most practical solution in this case is a rack. Racks are made of plastic, metal or wood. Many people make them with their own hands. This design can occupy either an entire wall from floor to ceiling, or be located in a separate compartment.
You can immediately purchase suitable finishing materials and decorative elements or create an original dressing room according to a special project.
Shelves are another way to store shoes conveniently and compactly. They are retractable or stationary. If in your case the dressing room is a spacious room, and many people live in the apartment, then it is advisable to equip a whole closet for shoes. It will contain a place not only for numerous shoes, sneakers and boots, but also for their care products.
The main criterion when choosing size and location is the number of people who will use it.
A walk-in closet is a very convenient way to store clothes and shoes in one place. Such a complex ensures the safety of things and also helps to quickly find what you need or assess what is missing. Unfortunately, not every apartment has the opportunity to set aside a separate room for these purposes. But even in small apartments you can create a convenient structure with systems specifically designed for storing certain things.
The construction of a stylish dressing room will significantly relieve the space of all rooms from bulky wardrobes and little-used items.
Varieties
The design of this product is not limited to several options. The shapes of shoe racks and design features can be both classic and unusual, fully consistent with the Art Nouveau movement. The following varieties are most common in everyday life:
- floor;
- wall;
- shelf-bench;
- rack.
Each apartment owner decides for himself which form to choose, taking into account the size of the room and the required functionality. In any case, before purchasing, you must carefully study the features of each type.
Floor
This is the most popular type of shoe rack in the hallway. Products are offered in a variety of designs with completely different styles. Installation of such models is carried out directly on the floor. Freestanding shelves are easy to move from place to place. It is also quite common to find a shoe stand combined with a wardrobe for clothes. Floor systems can be used to store seasonal pairs of shoes that are not worn for a long time, or for specialized ones, such as dress shoes, that are worn on special occasions.
The floor design can be equipped with drawers, which helps to quickly and easily remove shoes. It is no less convenient to use slim shelves with a folding door system. Their design differs in that the shelf itself is attached to the door with rotary hinges. Models come in different configurations: hinged, sliding, folding, with or without doors. Floor products can be used both in large and small rooms.
Wall-mounted
One of the shelf options for small spaces is wall-mounted. These are narrow devices of small size for storing different pairs of shoes. They can be hung on the wall at any height. Such structures can be stand-alone or combined with a hanger or rack. There are models that harmoniously combine with a bench or seat. The manufacturing material can be metal, plastic, wood.
The design is most often classic - in the form of a narrow rack, but there are also quite unusual models - vertical, wavy, where each pair of shoes has a separate cell, for example, like the Nest company. In addition, modern manufacturers offer plastic shelf holders, but they are more designed for indoor or summer shoes - flip-flops, flip-flops, ballet shoes, low-rise sandals.
Shelf-bench
This look is ideal for those who like to wear comfortable shoes. The design differs in that on top of such a shelf for shoes there is a seat, which can be either soft or hard. The model can be complemented with a backrest, a bedside table or a hanger. Typically, bench shelves for shoes do not have doors, and shoes are stored open. Thanks to this, sneakers, sandals or boots that are worn constantly are ventilated and dry. The dimensions of such furniture are small - it can easily fit into a hallway that is small in square meters. But it should be borne in mind that this design will not accommodate a lot of shoes.
Rack
The structure of the rack is similar to the previous version, but differs in dimensions. This shoe rack is usually quite high, which allows you to fit quite a lot of shoes. The top of the rack can be used as a place to store gloves, hats and other small items. The designs are:
- open - provides quick access to the desired pair;
- closed - the doors prevent dust from getting inside.
In addition, inside they can be equipped with horizontal shelves or separate cells designed for one pair of shoes. The number of tiers can vary from two or three to ten. The depth of any rack is quite narrow, so it will not take up much space.
Variety No. 5: shoe stand
Shoe storage design that requires no side walls or back partition
This option is notable for the fact that no partitions are involved in its installation. This applies to both the sides and the back wall. A small curved metal rod is simply mounted into the bottom of the wardrobe.
But there are still some requirements:
- The width of the compartment must exceed 60 cm.
- The minimum permissible depth of the internal partition is 50 cm.
- The required free space in height is 9.4 cm.
The design can be complicated by adding a base made of chipboard, which in turn will be mounted using retractable guides. In this case, the stand can be pulled out from the depths of the cabinet. This will make it more convenient to use, but will increase the price and add components that are prone to breakage.
Varieties
There are many options for shelving systems. The type of shelving design is usually selected based on the overall dimensions of the room allocated for the wardrobe. If it is possible to arrange a large dressing room with separate shelves for clothes and shoes, it is better to choose wooden furniture of a classic design. Such shelving structures can be both stationary and mobile. If the dressing room has a very small space inside, then shelving placed on the walls is optimal.
Shelving
In rooms for storing clothes, shoes and linen, shelving structures are often built-in. The built-in system involves attaching the entire structure to the walls, ceiling and floor. In this case, the rear wall may not be used. The design solution for a shelved wardrobe can be quite simple. Clothes shelves made of laminate for folded clothes or metal mesh for shoes are attached to a supporting frame made of perforated profiles. It is quite possible to install such a wardrobe system with your own hands.
One-piece shelving models of a conservative shape, installed across the entire wall, allow you to place a large number of shoes in the dressing room. Such racks are made up of cells provided for each pair of shoes. Frames made entirely of wood look good.
Prefabricated
The universal collapsible design of the rack can be quickly assembled at home, perfectly solving the problem of storing a large volume of clothes and shoes in the limited space of a city apartment. This shelving structure has a set of vertical racks of different heights and horizontal shelves of different sizes.
Racks are usually equipped with adjustable supports, allowing the rack to be mounted on an uneven floor. The shelves are fixed in racks using special holders and are equipped with rear walls that prevent things from tipping over. To install shelves in the structure, boltless connections are also used, allowing the shelves to be secured in hooks. Depending on the desire, the racks can be easily mounted upward, in a line, or in the form of multi-level steps.
Modular
Using modular shelving is the most convenient and rational way to organize home storage for wardrobe items. Modular racks have certain advantages over other types:
- at the owner’s request, shelving modules can be easily and quickly transformed, allowing you to create many convenient options;
- modules can be freely swapped and installed in another place, they are easy to care for;
- if the need arises, new ones can be easily added to existing modules.
Roll-out
Roll-out shelving models can be ideal for arranging narrow dressing rooms. Such racks can be high, in the form of retractable display cases, and low, similar to retractable chests of drawers. The rack has the ability to attach the necessary additional modules. For long-lasting use, roll-out racks made of aluminum are recommended.
Roll-out designs can be successfully used for shoes. They allow you to neatly arrange your shoes in several rows and quickly find the right pair. The designs of roll-out shoe sections can be equipped with benches, on which it is easy to try on.
Ready
Large companies engaged in the manufacture and sale of cabinet furniture offer ready-made sets of shelving of various designs and functionality for dressing rooms of different sizes. Wardrobe racks can also be made to order, having previously taken the dimensions of the room. Any consumer will be able to independently think through the design and choose pieces of furniture for the dressing room, taking into account the activity and lifestyle of all family members.
Variety No. 1: mechanisms
Special rotating mechanisms are the basis of the design of the type under consideration
This design consists of two side walls made of plastic, on which there are grooves for mounting shelves and a bottom made of chipboard. The front wall, which can also be made of chipboard or MDF, plays the role of the facade of the shoe rack.
The structure of the mechanism is very simple: side walls and two shelves
Most often, this option can be found in the form of an independent piece of furniture; in this case, the mechanism itself is additionally enclosed in a body and resembles a chest of drawers from the outside.
Shoe mechanisms can be used as independent furniture if they are first installed in frames made of chipboard, MDF or wood
But no one bothers you to build such an accessory into a wardrobe. Let's see how it's done:

Be sure to make sure that the department in which the new accessory is installed is at least 3 cm narrower than the second half of the wardrobe. Otherwise, the compartment doors will not allow the shoe racks to open.
Wardrobe projects
The location of the wardrobe complex in the room must be accurately calculated, since the design, the purpose of which is to save space, should not take up a single extra centimeter. Thanks to zoning, you can fit all summer clothes, shoes, voluminous jackets and fur coats. For each type and size of wardrobe, a different way of delimiting space is suitable. To successfully create your own corner for comfortable storage of things, you need to familiarize yourself with standard wardrobe designs:
- Corner layout. Can be organized in any room of the house or apartment. The main advantage of the model is the ability to place a large number of things without losing space or blocking useless corners. Wardrobes can be built in or placed as free-standing pieces of furniture. The models are filled with shelves and hangers right up to the ceiling;
- Parallel. It is distinguished by functionality and ease of project implementation. You can assemble the model with a frame cabinet and partitions. Ideal for a long, wide corridor and other rooms of a similar type;
- Linear. Looks like a regular wardrobe. It can be placed along any wall. Due to its elongated structure, it has limitations in the placement of additional items (ironing board, table). You can only move along a narrow passage;
- U-shaped. A spacious room is created due to excess space. It can be filled with racks of various sizes, hangers, large baskets and drawers. Such a wardrobe is separated by a traditional partition or interior door.
Arranging a dressing room
When starting to work with your own hands, you need to act in a certain sequence.
To begin with, it is recommended to look at and evaluate photos of dressing rooms that are successfully used.
Designers involved in interior design with their own hands tend to believe that the minimum width of a room can be only one meter.
The wardrobe has approximately the same dimensions. You need to be aware that a dressing room is not a closet or a storage room.

More stringent requirements are imposed on the design of the premises.
It is important to achieve a layout so that the area is used to maximum benefit
Designing a dressing room
Since the dressing room is considered an important element in the apartment, its arrangement must begin with a project.
It is not necessary to prepare drawings that correspond to a unified design documentation system, but you will have to draw a sketch to scale with your own hands.
The first step is choosing the shape of the room layout. Today, designers identify the following wardrobe schemes:
- linear;
- U-shaped;
- parallel;
- corner
The linear layout is similar to a large wardrobe located along a blank wall. The U-shaped option is preferable to use in a long room. Most often, a dressing room of this type is equipped in the bedroom.
A parallel wardrobe system is implemented in a walk-through room or corridor.
A corner dressing room is chosen when there is a free corner in a large room.
You can separate the dressing room from the main room with your own hands in different ways. To hide the room from prying eyes, doors, screens and curtains are used.
It is imperative to choose the design of a dividing element for the common room. In practice, there are solutions when the dressing room is not fenced off from the outside space in any way.
Selection of materials
To provide people living in the apartment with maximum convenience when using the dressing room, there are several zones in it - upper, middle and lower.
The upper zone includes shelves located above the 190 cm mark. Seasonal items are stored here.
In the middle zone, at a height of 60 to 190 cm, the most convenient access is provided. The bottom is designed to accommodate shoes and accessories.
The design of the rack or cabinet must be stable and durable. The wooden frame for the shelves can be assembled and secured with your own hands. During installation, some of the shelves can be replaced with mesh containers.
You can quickly and efficiently make a dressing room from plasterboard. This building material is technologically advanced and is often used in interior decoration.
But it cannot be used for shelves. Wooden structures have sufficient strength.
At the same time, they do not emit harmful substances into the air, like some synthetic materials.
To arrange a dressing room with your own hands, metal products and blanks are often used.
Store-bought parts can be easily assembled yourself without turning to the help of professionals.
Video:
It takes some effort to assemble and secure a cabinet or shelving unit. When decorating pieces of furniture, it is advisable to have imagination.
Sequencing
You can begin installing a dressing room yourself after you have developed a sketch and purchased all the necessary materials. To work, you will need a standard set of tools.
In order to save financial resources, some craftsmen use parts of old furniture to create a wardrobe system.
If the house has cabinets or sideboards that are already, as they say, “an eyesore,” then they can be disassembled into their component elements - disassembled and used again. These works are carried out at the preparatory stage.
After thorough preparation, the first step is to clear the place where the partitions and shelving will be installed, then the supporting frame is assembled and attached to the walls, floor and ceiling of the dressing room.
The next step is to install and secure the wall, if provided for by the project. Shelves, baskets, drawers and other elements are hung on a fixed frame.
After the assembly is completed, it’s time for finishing - the existing cracks and cracks are puttied, then the surface of the walls is painted or covered with wallpaper.
Before placing clothes and other things, drawers and shelves should be thoroughly washed and dried.
Variation No. 4: roll-out shoe stand
The roll-out system is the most technologically complex version of a shoe rack for a sliding wardrobe
In this case, we are talking about a design consisting of three shelves, which are installed on the cabinet wall using full extension ball guides. Such a system is very convenient to use, but has a number of requirements regarding its location:
- The minimum permissible width of the department is 40 cm.
- The depth of the side of the cabinet must be at least 50 cm.
- The height required is a free space of 61.7 cm.
But for its installation, one wall of the cabinet is enough, which is often a very convenient, and sometimes even the only solution.
Calculating the optimal size of the dressing room
You have a small living space in your home and have decided to install a dressing room. You can use a minimum area for such a room, which will be from two to three square meters.
It is worth remembering that small corner wardrobes are more spacious than those designed along the wall.
In this case, it is possible to position the hangers and shelves at any convenient angle. The corner option is suitable for an apartment with a standard ceiling height (without roof slopes and protrusions on the walls).
You can store a lot in such a dressing room:
- Clothes and shoes;
- Various accessories and decorations;
- Small equipment for sports and recreation;
- Ironing board.
Arrange shelves and drawers so that it is convenient for you. This will allow things to stay. The filling and design of the room depends on your imagination and the space used.
Kinds
Depending on the type of structure, the filling for dressing rooms can be:
- cabinet - made of wooden panels;
- mesh - the fillers are mesh baskets;
- loft systems made of aluminum.
There are a lot of ways to fill dressing rooms and they depend only on the size of the budget. These can be either self-designed racks, rods with plastic drawers, baskets, or expensive natural wood facades with glass front panels and drawers.
Options for filling wardrobes can be combined in different ways: wooden shelves with mesh baskets, metal racks and closed wooden drawers. The main thing is that the chosen system for the dressing room makes it easy to maintain order, provides a clear overview, and quick access to things.

Loft
Mesh
Hull
Frame systems are fixed structures and include corner elements. All elements of such a dressing room are rigidly connected to each other and securely attached to the walls. If you want to change something in the location, it will be somewhat difficult to do this
Therefore, when choosing traditional systems, you should pay special attention to planning the room, think through every little detail
Mesh
Such structures are also called cellular structures. The principle of the device: metal mesh shelves are hung on vertical slats attached to the walls, equipped with special mounting holes, and rods are attached. Instead of wooden boxes, mesh baskets are installed on the grids. The main advantage of mesh systems is visibility and transparency. When entering the dressing room, you don’t need to open the drawers yet, everything is immediately visible - where and what is stored.
The second important advantage is mobility: shelves and drawers are easy to hang and rearrange. Therefore, this storage organization option will really appeal to those who like to optimize space through changes and rearrangements. IKEA and Elfa have a wide selection of such designs; they are easy and quick to assemble using improvised means.
One of the disadvantages is that all the parts are presented in strictly defined sizes: the depth of the shelves is 30, 40, 50 centimeters, the baskets are 45 centimeters in size. Also, those who love sophisticated design may not quite like the simplicity of the honeycomb filling. Typically, all parts of mesh structures are made of white or silver metal. When purchasing, you should choose models without unevenness, roughness, or protruding parts that things can cling to or tear.
Loft
The name of the structure comes from the word loft - this is the architectural style of former factory buildings converted into residential premises. It is characterized by an abundance of space and metal parts. By choosing the filling for a room in this style, you will visually expand the room and make it very modern and ergonomic. The structures are represented by metal racks connecting the ceiling and floor, or the upper racks are fastened directly to the walls in the shape of the letter L.
The rods themselves, shelves, shoe racks, and drawers are attached to the racks. This option is also suitable for various rearrangements, but not independently, but with the use of special tools. Not everyone may like to store things so openly, unprotected from dust, but this arrangement option is the most conducive to ideal order. Any boxes or baskets can be installed here: made of plastic, wood, wicker materials. The convenience of the loft system is that it is easy to install modules of various configurations, even the most non-standard shapes.
Options for ready-made shelving
- One-piece. These designs include cabinets with sections for outerwear, things, shoes and shelves for accessories. These also include fabric systems, which consist of a metal frame and a fabric cover. Such systems can also be equipped with shelves for storing various clothes and accessories.
- Modular are the most popular and convenient systems. The rack consists of vertical racks and various drawers and shelves are mounted on them. The size of the modular shelving depends on the size of the dressing room. This option is also more popular because it can easily be made larger or smaller, and is also easy to install and maintain.
- Cabinet structures are modules for arranging a dressing room, consisting of several sections. Sections can be placed close to each other or separately.
- Frame structures. They are a device made of metal racks. Their advantage is ease of assembly, good ventilation of things and the ability to rearrange components. For this design, you can select absolutely any shelves, not only made of metal, but also made of wood.
Any shelving option must have the following departments:
- For storing shoes.
- Accessories.
- Section with a rod for storing shirts and trousers.
- For things.
Open shelves in the dressing room are rarely used, but if you place them near the ceiling, you will have free space that can be taken up with additional storage devices. In addition, rarely used or seasonal items can be stored on such shelves.
Roll-out shelves provide convenient storage space. You can store both things and accessories in them, and you won’t have to look for the necessary thing for a long time, since it will be immediately visible.
Multi-level racks can be of different sizes and can be equipped according to the following principle: insert drawers, baskets, shelves and other fillers into the lower sections, and equip the upper compartment for rarely used accessories. In a large dressing room, you can install two types of racks: with shelves and rods on which clothes are hung, and the upper section can be equipped with a pantograph.
The shape of the racks can be different: from U-shaped to parallel.
Variety No. 2: mesh shoe racks
The dimensions of the basket must match the size of your shoes
This is an even simpler version of the shoe shoe, which consists of shelves made of metal mesh, secured at an angle with brackets.
To have something to attach the baskets to, additionally make a back wall of chipboard in the shoe compartment. It will serve as a reliable support for mesh shelves with shoes.
A chipboard sheet on the cabinet wall will serve as an additional element of stability for mesh shoe racks
