Placing closets on either side of the bed is a popular bedroom furnishing plan. It is considered rational and practical, and therefore is often recommended for small spaces.
You can, of course, move the bed to the left or right, and put one wide wardrobe in the free space. But this is not always reasonable. According to ergonomic requirements, both berths must be provided with passages. (If we are talking about a bedroom for two, of course). In this case, it is advisable to install two narrower cabinets, placing the head of the bed between them. This solves two problems at once: creating passages and creating storage areas.
However, this scheme is chosen not only for rational furnishing of tiny bedrooms. It also has other positive aspects.
Firstly, this furniture composition is built on clear symmetry. Symmetry here is not just expressed - it is at the core, the focus is on it. And we know that symmetry is an integral feature of the classics. Not only traditional, but also freely modern. When decorating interiors in this style, designers often deliberately choose this scheme, even if the bedroom area can hardly be called modest.
Secondly, cabinets placed at intervals form a shallow alcove . A good old tradition is to deepen the head of the bed into a niche. Many people find it cute and cozy.
Children really like this arrangement of beds, so this plan is also often implemented in children’s rooms.
In general, there are many reasons to choose the scheme in question. And there are many options for its implementation.
Wall cabinets above the bed in the bedroom
Dimensions
Most often, the compactness of the design is emphasized by the dimensions - these are cabinets or a series of shelves, the external compactness of which is combined with their spaciousness. The choice depends on the size of the room, and since most apartments are small in size, the emphasis is on modern and compact wall cabinets and shelves.
Cabinets and shelves should not only perform their basic functions, but also fit well into the room.
The wall above the head of the bed is the area that immediately attracts attention
When decorating your bedroom, you should consider not only the size and style of the bed, but also what should be right behind it. Thanks to the thoughtful placement of the area behind the back of the furniture, the bedroom can be visually enlarged, adding emphasis to the room or making it more cozy. There are several win-win options for finishing the area above the head of the bed that should be considered.
Types of wall cabinets
- Angular.
- Coupe.
- Hesitation.
- Book.
The best solution would be cabinets that will also decorate this interior.
Angular
This is the best option for a built-in wardrobe for a bedroom with a small area. You can place such a structure in different parts of the room, the functionality will not change.
Proponents argue that such designs are functional, ergonomic and affordable.
The positive features of this type include the following.
- The ability to install a corner cabinet in any part of the room without “overlapping” the outside or taking up space.
- Corner wardrobe designs usually store clothes, bed linen and other things that are conveniently placed there due to their spaciousness.
- In the corner ensemble outside, you can install shelves for vases, photo frames, and flower pots.
- The design can be of absolutely any shape and color, so choosing something to suit every style and taste will not be difficult.
For safety, it is enough to think through the entire structure and securely secure cabinets or shelves, observing all building codes.
Closet
Another suitable type, characterized by spaciousness and different design solutions. The complex can be placed in most areas of the room: in front, above the bed or on the side.
It is important that shelves and cabinets are securely fastened.
Before purchasing this type of design, you need to consider its features:
- the doors open in front of the cabinet, that is, they do not need to be opened, you can simply push them so that they move away;
- extensive internal space - inside the structure there are many drawers of different sizes that can be pulled out and fixed, where things and clothes are stored;
- the model can be equipped with an additional external rack suitable for storing books and accessories (paintings, vases);
- decoration of the external surface of the doors: they can be painted with patterns or mirrors, which suits well modern interior design styles.
Full cabinets are a more serious design than shelves. The installation quality requirements are appropriate.
Hinged wardrobe
it is similar to a coupe, but there is a difference in size: coupes have up to 5 doors, and swing doors have no more than 3, which does not prevent them from enjoying equal popularity due to their comparative spaciousness...with other models.
Wall cabinets allow you to design many more options for mounting them above the bed than simple shelves, and they provide more storage space.
The positive characteristics include the following.
- Excellent ability to remember many things. They can be divided into several sections, each of which will have enough storage space.
- Easy to use: The doors can be easily pushed back even with slight pressure.
- Outdoor shelving is ideal for storing small accessories, photo frames and books.
- Many design options, from mirror surfaces to a variety of patterns, from classic to innovative styles.
One of the most successful options is cabinets that form a niche at the head of the bed - they look more beautiful and are much more reliable.
Bookshelf
Externally, these are square or rectangular shaped structures with shelves and shelves. They usually have transparent glass doors on one side, and sometimes additionally have small cabinets for bedding, clothes, and other things.
A popular option recently in the interior.
Wardrobes on both sides of the bed: a variety of solutions
Purpose of cabinets
The bed alcove can be formed from both clothing and bookcases.
Cabinets can look like classic wardrobes with blank or glazed facades, or like modern shelving, fully or partially open. The choice is determined by the needs of the owners.
Design options
Cabinets can be separate from each other. But there is another solution - an over-bed component that combines the cabinets into a single whole. This is usually a wall cabinet that acts as a bridge between larger cabinets.
This U-design makes the alcove more clearly defined. Additional storage space appears. But not everyone likes to sleep under an overhanging piece of furniture.
To create a U-structure, you can, however, do without a unifying cabinet, limiting yourself to a common lid for both cabinets.
The design of the side bedside elements deserves special attention. It is highly desirable that there is a surface on the side of the bed on which you can put something: a phone, a book, cream, a glass of water, etc. Usually, bedside tables or tables are installed on both sides of the bed. How is this issue resolved if the bed is planned to be placed between the cabinets?
If the length of the wall allows, you can place cabinets near the bed, and then wardrobes. No room for cabinets? Perhaps small wall shelves will suffice.
If cabinets are being custom built, there are a number of alternatives. Firstly, you can make niches in the end of the cabinets. The resulting shelf will cope with the role of a bedside element.
Secondly, you can divide the sections closest to the bed into upper and lower components with free space between them. The lower part will serve as a bedside table.
The third solution is to have open shelves in the cabinet design at approximately the same height as the bed. It's less convenient, but better than nothing.
An option for those who like non-standard solutions is to equip cabinets with roll-out shelves-tables located at the same height as the bed or so. Before going to bed, we rolled out the shelf and put everything we needed on it. Getting up, we rolled it back so as not to interfere.
You should not leave the bed without any bedside element. This significantly reduces the level of convenience, comfort and ergonomics of the bedroom. It may be a very small shelf, but it is important.
Installation method
There are two types of installation: cabinets can be built-in or free-standing. Someone installs full-fledged niches under cabinets. Someone simply builds a sub-ceiling box into which the cabinet roof rests.
What is the purpose of embedding? Built-in wardrobes do not protrude, but seem to merge with the walls into a single whole. Built-in structures may look more organic.
But this is an optional option. Small parallel cabinets that stand alone will also not overload the space or create disharmony. It's more a matter of preference and opportunity.
Design and finishing
Of course, the wardrobes must correspond to the leading concept of the bedroom. Each interior is unique, so there can be no general recommendations. But there are several common solutions that can be adopted.
The wall behind the bed and the ends of the cabinets (or niches built for them) can be finished identically. For example, paint it the same color, cover it with the same wallpaper, or cover it with boards from the same collection. The alcove will appear deeper and more expressive.
Another popular move is to choose a single color for both the wall and the furniture fronts. Even the headboard can match in color. This allows you to create a single continuous line, which visually lengthens the wall. Or at least it doesn’t visually reduce it with color division. This is a good technique for a small bedroom.
To visually increase the space, there is another trick - mirror facades.
Cabinets can also be made to contrast with the headboard area. This highlights the sleeping area and creates an emphasis on parallelism and symmetry. But visually the wall may shorten.
When arranging classic and minimalist interiors, an attempt is often made to disguise the wardrobes. It may be just a partial disguise, but the perception is changing. To visually “smooth out” the cabinets, you need to use discreet, almost invisible handles or abandon them altogether. Another way is to give the facades the appearance of wall panels, wooden or perhaps mirrored.
There are a great many design options for bedside cabinets. Look at the photos, get inspired, and come up with your own ideas.
Leave room for passage
For convenient and comfortable movement around the room, it is necessary to take into account the size of the corridors. The distance from the edge of the bed to the wall or closet with sliding doors should be at least 70 cm; this passage to the bed will allow you to undress and lie down comfortably. If the bed is a double, leave these steps on both sides. Making the bed and changing clothes will be easier in this case.
If the room does not allow such an arrangement, place the double bed with one side facing the wall. At the same time, there should be free space at the feet so that the person sleeping against the wall does not have to step over the partner, disturbing his sleep.
What to hang above the bed according to Feng Shui rules
The bedroom is considered one of the most significant places in the house, and therefore the rules of Feng Shui particularly strictly regulate the arrangement of objects in the room.
A properly organized bedroom is a safe space where a person gets better sleep, recovers strength faster and relaxes after a hard day.
One of the most popular Feng Shui decorations is paintings that can be successfully placed at the head of the bed. The paintings should contain stable images that will nourish a person with peace of mind and give him confidence.
Such image options include, for example, mountains. At the same time, you should not choose paintings with water for the bedroom, since the energy of the water element is quite restless.
In addition, you should remove from the bedroom all images that bring excessive dynamics: pictures of public holidays, sporting events, images of vehicles, etc. All this constantly keeps a person in suspense and prevents him from resting peacefully.
Pictures that depict negative emotions should be completely excluded not only from the bedroom, but also from the house, as they set the residents in a bad mood.
Also, Feng Shui does not prohibit the use of more functional items, such as lamps.
Placing identical night lights in the area above the bed will help harmonize family relationships - the main thing is that the items are paired. This has a beneficial effect on attracting positive energy and has practical applications.
If the head of the bed is directly opposite the door, you should not hang a mirror there. Mirrors become a way to attract other people's energy, and therefore they can negatively affect family relationships, creating problems in a couple.
Bedside wardrobes for the bedroom - design options
Bedside tables for the bedroom are a special decorative area for organizing and storing things and creating a cozy atmosphere in the room. In addition, this typology allows you to save on the sleeping area, since the design elements can be located on the sides, in accordance with the headboard or, as already mentioned, above the bed.
Bedside tables are installed both for storing things and for decorating a room in various styles.
Note! An important point of choice: material. It must be of the highest quality and from a reliable manufacturer.
When considering bedrooms with an area of 10-15 square meters, you must remember that not all interior styles are suitable for the room and especially for bedside tables, so we will present the most suitable and applicable interior styles.
There are few restrictions on the use of such lockers: the weight of the contents and the humidity in the room.
Provence. Interiors in this style have pastel colors, flowers, natural wood cabinets and many other beautiful but useless accessories on the shelves. A light style that expands the space outward, blending the furniture into the overall look of the room and thereby creating a cozy atmosphere.
Classical. The main accent in the bedroom is a bed with a decorated headboard, which should create a single composition with it.
Furniture manufacturers could not stay away from the trends of the times and offered their own solution for placing cabinets above the bed - a ready-made furniture wall with a niche under the headboard.
Important! In a small room, a classic-style interior will create a feeling of untidiness, so such a project should be treated with caution and attention.
Minimalism. Characteristic features: rejection of complex forms and excesses, the desire to emphasize free space. The most concise and organized design, suitable for small apartments. It visually “frees up” space, and using, for example, cabinets with glass doors will only increase it.
Wardrobes above the bed change and decorate the interior.
What types of beds are there?
Beds are divided according to the number of beds and functionality:
- Single bed - width 80-120 cm and length 190-210 cm.
- Double bed - width 160-230 cm and length - 200-220 cm.
- Single bed - width 120-160 cm and length 190-220 cm.
- A platform bed with a pull-out storage system can replace numerous chests of drawers in a small room and free up space.
- A sofa bed is an excellent option for studios, where the bed is a sleeping place and the sofa is a sitting area in the living room.
- A transforming bed is perhaps the most compact of all existing options; in a few seconds the bed turns into a wall.
- A bunk bed is a bed with two floors and two sleeping places, most often used in children's rooms.
Tip:
To choose the right size bed, you need to add 15-20 cm to a person’s height.

Types of facades
Wardrobes above the bed change and decorate the interior. Their design is different:
- Swing doors. Everything is in the familiar and classic version. In a small bedroom, it may not be the best choice due to lack of space.

Decorating the wall above the head of the bed using brick and concrete
Contrary to appearance, brick adds a pleasant coziness to the interior. Thus, the wall above the bed can be laid with special brick tiles. Thanks to this design, the material goes well with bright, smooth surfaces, as well as wooden or metal parts of the bed and interior. You can also try special halogen lighting, which will highlight the beautiful texture of the brick.
Concrete over the bed? Why not! This material is associated with something harsh and cold, but in the company of soft pillows it looks very attractive. There are several ways to achieve the concrete wall effect:
- the use of paint that imitates plaster;
- applying a special solution to impregnated concrete slabs;
- investing in gypsum panels.
Wardrobe at the head of the bed in the bedroom
you can also place cabinets around the sofa in the bedroom to save space. Between the cabinets it is enough to hang shelves, which together form a complete ensemble for books and things.
Wall blocks and structures are made of wood, MDF, plasterboard or polymer materials.
Remember! Each shelf must be secured every 60 cm.
To add greater beauty and practicality, you can install a wall lamp on the wall between the back of the sofa and the furniture set. Instead of installing lighting, you can place paintings by artists.
The façade materials of curtain wall structures may be the same as or different from the cabinets themselves.
This solution is used by many designers working in different styles from vintage to classic. The style is easy to determine by choosing a particular type of shelving and color palette.
What to hang on the wall above the bed
Decorative elements are an important part of any interior, as they allow you to create the necessary accents without much effort. The decor creates a feeling of completeness and formation of the interior and is an integral part of any design.
In the bedroom, such decorative elements can be various objects placed above the bed. For some ideas for decorating the above-bed area, watch this video.
Let's take a closer look at what else you can hang above the bed.
Paintings and posters
If previously the classic decoration option was massive paintings in gilded frames, now they have begun to be abandoned in favor of more modern options.
These, for example, include macro photography - a painting or poster with an image of a large object and a blurred background creates a special mood in the bedroom and gives it dynamism or, on the contrary, calmness, depending on the theme of the picture.
You can give preference to both budget options, for example, posters or paintings printed on canvas, and more complex ones - purchase famous reproductions, originals, or even draw a picture yourself.
Modular pictures
One of the popular types of decor, which consists of several separate images combined into one module.
The paintings may differ in shape and size, but they are connected by a common style or idea. Modular paintings should consist of no more than 4 parts, otherwise there will be a feeling of clutter in space.
Mirror
Using a mirror to create accents is a technique that makes the bedroom more stylish and modern. This helps change the visual perception of the room.
You need to select an appropriate frame for the mirror, which will be an additional design element and emphasize the overall style of the bedroom.
It is important to understand that a mirror at the headboard is not a very functional item. Therefore, it will mainly have a decorative purpose.
Carpet
In Soviet times, decorating with carpets was a popular decor option, as carpets had good sound and heat insulation properties. For a long time it was considered a relic of the past, but at the moment carpets are back in trend.
They are not suitable for modern rooms with a minimalist design, but will fit perfectly into the interior of bedrooms designed in oriental, Indian or art deco styles.
For example, natural carpets with geometric, heavily colored patterns are becoming increasingly popular.
Photos
Decorating a wall with photographs is a budget option that can make a room look stylish at an affordable price.
Unlike painting in the interior, photo decor looks like a harmless, non-binding element that, with the right approach, will look optimal in any style.
Photos on an accent wall should be united by a common theme to create a unified design in the room.
The choice of visuals should be based on the overall concept of the room. For example, vintage photographs are not suitable for high-tech style, and panoramic landscapes will look inappropriate in a small bedroom.
Photos printed on canvas are becoming a modern way of transferring specific images or graphic elements onto a textured surface. Instead of standard photo paper, a canvas is used that resembles the one on which real paintings are painted.
Stickers and stencils
Volumetric stickers placed on the wall will become an unusual design element. Such images look just like life, attract attention and make the interior of the room unique.
Often, stickers with flowers and birds are used to decorate bedrooms, which adds naturalness to the room. The market offers extremely realistic images with a 3D effect, which, with the right choice of colors and light and shade, become an appropriate addition to the interior.
Also, to decorate the head of the bed, stencils are used - templates that make it possible to apply the necessary design to any surface. Its peculiarity is that with the help of such a stencil it is possible to form a repeating decorative element to create a bedroom in the same style.
Shelves
This is an option for designing a bed headboard for practical people who prefer to create an interior from the most functional elements. The following materials are usually used to create shelves:
- drywall;
- tree;
- chipboard;
- glass;
- plastic;
- metal.
The choice of material should be determined by the characteristics of the interior. For example, glass or metal would look good in a minimalist design.
For safety reasons, it is not recommended to hang shelves directly above the sleeping bed.
Watch
Wall clocks are a universal decorative element whose functionality is not lost in any room. An elegant clock becomes a small accent spot that can be placed in any room, complementing the interior with an unusual solution.
It is important that the design of the clock matches the overall style of the bedroom. In addition, if the clock is located at the head of the bed, you should not place other accent elements there, as this will look like a clutter of decor.
Lamps
Wall lights are an important element for the entire room due to the functions they perform. They provide the right lighting, help highlight details in the bedroom and create a cozy, calm atmosphere.
If the wall on which the lamps are located is white, you should choose dark sconces. And, on the contrary, for dark walls you need lamps with light shades.
A large bedroom requires lighting in all corners, so you should not focus solely on placing lamps near the bed. Lighting should be combined: one basic light source on the ceiling and local light sources located next to the bed.
A special effect can be achieved by using decorative lighting, which provides spot lighting.
Panel
This is a DIY wall composition that can become an excellent decorative element in the bedroom. The panel is made in different styles and techniques. Often it is made voluminous.
Images placed above the bed should not be too flashy or bright.
To create a panel, you should use colors that go well with the basic design. However, for this you should choose not a similar option, but a lighter shade.
How to protect the wall next to the bed?
When choosing wall decoration in the bedroom, you should think about protecting the surface above the head of the bed. Wallpaper, wall paintings, stickers, wood panels - all these wall decoration ideas will completely protect the surface from dirt. The area behind the bed in the bedroom is very delicate and therefore requires extra care. Thus, decorating the walls in the bedroom can not only give character to the interior, but also make the use of the room more practical.
You can decorate the area above the head of the bed in different ways. The main thing is that the chosen option is not only aesthetically beautiful for you, but also contributes to pleasant rest and relaxation.
Wall painting in the area above the head of the bed
Gone are the days when wall paintings were considered a failed design experiment. Today, stylish wall decoration is ideal for a small bedroom. Thanks to her, the room will gain depth. The colors and character of the decoration should be harmoniously combined with the style of the interior. For example, a lavender field is perfect for a Provençal bedroom! Wall painting imitating wooden beams is an excellent solution for a chalet style, but a forest edge will complement the classics.
