Modern apartments cannot be imagined without folding sofas. Their advantage is undeniable: they are comfortable, save precious square meters and provide sleeping space.

Eurobook sofa extension mechanism.

Furniture stores offer folding sofas in a large assortment, and Eurobook sofas are the leaders among them. Most people prefer to buy a sofa in a store. However, some may be interested in how to make a Eurobook sofa with your own hands.

This sofa consists of a seat, back and armrests. Its base can be used as a storage compartment. The design of the Eurobook sofa is simple. To unfold such a sofa, turning it into a full-fledged sleeping place, just pull the special loop towards you and pull the seat forward, and lower the backrest to the free space.

how to make a Eurobook sofa

Instructions with video tutorials, drawings, dimensions and parts list.
I will tell you how to make the simplest Eurobook folding sofa. This time in the form of video instructions with comments, drawings for assembling the sofa and a complete list of parts.

This sofa has a sleeping area measuring 2 x 1.5 meters. You can do it yourself, without transformation mechanisms, without expensive tools. All materials for production are available to everyone. We will make the most economical and ascetic sofa, but we will not forget about quality. When purchasing materials, I spent 6 thousand rubles (at that time about $85). In the first video I will talk about the advantages of this sofa, the materials and tools.

Based on my instructions, you can easily change the appearance of the sofa to your liking. For example, it won’t be difficult to make a sofa in the following options (top option in the video):

If you make more significant changes (enlarge the drawer), you can make a sofa with armrests. And even on the basis of a Eurobook, adding an ottoman, you can make a corner sofa. We have already discussed how to make armrests and an ottoman in the instructions for the corner sofa. In addition, there is also a project for an armrest with a shelf for books.

Below you can see how much and what material was needed to make the sofa. The cost of all materials was less than 6,000 rubles or $85 at that time ($1 = 70 rubles).

Wood or pallet frame?

Having decided to make a corner sofa, people must competently approach the choice of materials. They must be environmentally friendly, safe, durable and easy to use.

Advice: for beginners in carpentry, you should avoid materials such as laminated boards and large-section timber. Because they are expensive and difficult to process.

As for the variety of materials from which a sofa frame can be made, these include:

  • Pallets. This material is budget-friendly. The process of making a corner sofa from pallets will take a minimum of free time. As a result, you will get an original model that harmoniously fits into loft, Provence or minimalism styles.
  • Beam. It is used in the manufacture of load-bearing parts of the frame. Glued laminated timber is most often used to create sidewalls. Its advantages include a perfectly smooth surface, ease of use and high technical performance.
  • Plywood. It is of high quality, durable and easy to use. The unique properties of plywood are directly related to its production. Thanks to a special technology for gluing veneer sheets, the material has high strength. Plywood is much stronger than timber. Frames made from it do not deform during long-term use, do not absorb moisture, and do not dry out.
  • Natural array. This type of furniture is a classic and is in great demand. Wooden furniture looks harmonious in different interiors. It is distinguished by its naturalness, environmental friendliness, aesthetics and long service life. You can make a sofa frame from different types of wood: birch, pine, oak, larch, beech, walnut, ash. Each individual option has its own advantages and technical characteristics.

    The frame of a pine sofa, although it has an affordable price, will not please its owners with its high quality. It is quite difficult to find high quality wood on the market. Because of this, the sofa will quickly fail and lose its attractive appearance. To prevent mold and fungi from appearing on the product, you must choose well-dried wood. Birch in the manufacture of frames is also affordable in terms of price, but has higher quality indicators. Such products will turn out to be quite durable and reliable.

Reference: the most reliable and durable are sofas whose frame is made of timber and plywood or only plywood. If you plan to make a large model, then it is recommended to make the bottom bar of the product from wood or chipboard.

  • Foam rubber 10 mm or batting - at your discretion for the back (see stage Upholstery of the seat and back)
  • Drawing development

    The quality of the manufactured structure directly depends on how well the drawings and diagrams are drawn up.

    It is extremely important that the sketches are as clear and simple as possible. They are created according to the following principle: the location of each part and its size are indicated (described)

    After drawing the drawing, they begin to create an assembly diagram, which indicates the location of fasteners, reinforcing parts and partitions.

    The master should adhere to these simple recommendations:

    • when choosing the dimensions of furniture, you must first of all decide on its location and take measurements;
    • the diagram must necessarily include the length of the two halves of the structure, the height and depth of the back;
    • to determine the width of the frame being created, you need to calculate the difference between the sum of the length of a pair of halves and the depth.

    When making soft folding or kitchen furniture, you should consider the following nuances when creating a drawing:

    • at what angle the back will be tilted;
    • what are the dimensions of the structure as a whole and its individual components;
    • Is it necessary to install a folding mechanism;
    • Are storage boxes necessary?

    Description of the Eurobook sofa

    The type of furniture in question refers to transformable sofas: when folded, it is a comfortable place to sit, which, if necessary, through simple manipulations turns into a sleeping place.
    The base is a storage box for rarely used household items or linens.

    A special feature of the models is the absence of a complex lifting mechanism :

    • the seat extends along guides; rollers are used to facilitate sliding;
    • The backrest folds down using regular door hinges.

    There are sofa designs :

    • for one or two people;
    • straight retractable, rotary or corner;
    • with armrests or pillows performing their role.

    The choice of option depends on the budget, room configuration, required size and skills of the master.

    Folding mechanism

    The mechanism of this model is quite simple. The lower part smoothly moves forward, making a semicircle in the air, and the backrest folds out, forming a fairly comfortable sleeping place. The assembled sofa does not take up too much space, so it is perfect for small rooms, and the disassembly mechanism allows you not to spoil the floor covering when unfolding it regularly.

    Project preparation

    Performers who are well acquainted with carpentry draw a sketch and gradually adjust the remaining parts to the dimensions of the base. Craftsmen who are starting to make furniture for the first time need to have an accurate drawing, which is needed mainly for calculating the material.

    Those who are ready to go through the entire design stage must do the following:

    1. Create a sketch drawing. It is necessary to draw the furniture indicating the dimensions. The surroundings are drawn onto the sketch so that the sofa fits harmoniously into the space between the walls, window, and other furniture in the room.
    2. Make a drawing in four projections : front, side, top and back. This will help you not to forget any details, for example, the rear reinforcing bar, or the crossbars that provide rigidity to the base and back.
    3. Make separate drawings of the frame, back, seat and sides. All dimensions must match the general drawing (assembled).
    4. Draw an exact diagram of cutting/cutting materials.

    When drawing up drawings of individual components, be sure to indicate the dimensions of the parts, the method of fastening, the nomenclature and quantity of fittings.

    The correct drawing must include all structural elements, including reinforcing bars in the places where the opening mechanisms are attached, legs, and support parts in the unfolded position.

    How to calculate material consumption for upholstery of furniture

    When ordering furniture reupholstery, you should know that a large share of your costs will be the cost of upholstery material. Our recommendations will help you more accurately calculate the consumption of furniture fabric, which will allow you to avoid buying excess material.

    Features of cutting various fabrics

    1. The first thing you should start with when calculating material consumption is to decide on the texture of the fabric and its pattern. There are several rules when working with modern materials:

    • When cutting pile fabrics, it is necessary to ensure that the pile faces the same direction on all furniture, since the fabric has different shades along the pile and against it. This imposes certain restrictions on the location of patterns. The use of such materials does not increase material consumption significantly - approximately 10-15%

    • Materials with a directional pattern must also be cut in one direction.

    • A large pattern on the fabric is usually located in the center of the furniture. To combine patterns, you have to make fairly large cuts, which increases the consumption of material, sometimes very significantly. Therefore, if there is a need to upholster furniture with the least amount of material consumed, then try to avoid choosing material with a large pattern, as its overconsumption can reach up to 30%.

    Preparation of tools and materials

    To make a homemade sofa you will need tools :

    • drill or screwdriver with a set of drills and screwdriver bits;
    • jigsaw or wood saw;
    • grinder or plane;
    • furniture stapler with hardened staples of various sizes;
    • adjustable wrench;
    • hammer, chisel;
    • ruler, tape measure, knife, scissors, pencil and chalk.

    Having calculated the quantity, purchase the necessary material :

    • boards, bars, plywood or chipboard, depending on the chosen design;

    • furniture fabric;
    • lining, an intermediate layer between the filler and the outer covering;
    • furniture foam rubber;
    • fittings (corners, rollers, hinges, legs or supports);
    • fastening elements (euro screws, self-tapping screws, self-tapping screws).

    Based on the chosen design, you may need padding polyester, batting, and other consumables.

    Possible problems and their solutions

    The most common problem when moving an apartment is the need to transport a large, heavy sofa without a freight elevator. In such cases, you simply cannot do without the services of professional movers who have the necessary rigging equipment at their disposal.

    A significant difficulty is the lack of suitable transport. You should definitely not try to transport a sofa in a passenger car or in any other vehicle not equipped for this purpose. Only when transported in a specialized furniture van can you guarantee the safety of furniture during transportation!

    And finally, it can be a problem not to hit the door frame or corner when moving the sofa out of the room. To avoid damage to property, it is worth measuring the size of doorways in advance and securing the narrowest areas with thin polystyrene foam.

    Nuances of the work

    Any work process has its own subtleties that it is advisable to take into account. When assembling furniture yourself, you should pay attention to a number of recommendations:

    1. It is recommended to assemble the furniture with an assistant, due to the bulkiness of the structure.
    2. After delivery of the sofa, all elements are carefully inspected for defects (scratches, manufacturing defects), the color tones of the elements must be compared based on similarity, and the external condition of the material must be checked. Check the number of components stated in the instructions with their actual availability. Check the operation and strength of all movable mechanisms; there should also be no squeaking.
    3. If you are installing a corner sofa (right-sided, left-sided), additionally mark the frame, armrests, seats, and backrest.
    4. During assembly work, the fastening nuts only need to be “tightened”; after a full check of the functioning of the folding mechanism, the fasteners should be firmly pulled through with a screwdriver.
    5. During assembly, do not sit down or place heavy objects on the original structure.
    6. Be careful and precise in connections and fasteners. If parts are distorted or lack symmetry, they may not be used correctly. Additional weight load during further use will aggravate the situation, resulting in breakage.

    IMPORTANT! There should be no children in the assembly area. Tools and small fasteners can fall into the hands of a child!

    Other book variations

    The classic version of the book sofa is described above, but now there are more advanced models on sale.
    This is a click-clack and a Eurobook. The click-klyak is an almost traditional book, but has the ability to be installed reclining. However, its transformation mechanism is very unreliable. It unfolds in the same way as a regular book. There are no joints or height differences in the sleeping area.

    Sofa click-clack

    The Eurobook has a roll-out part. That is, to unfold it, you need to move the seat forward and then lower the backrest down. A simple option that folds out easily and has such a simple mechanism that it is extremely difficult to disable it. It is considered very reliable and durable, usually lasting longer than an ordinary classic book. Even a child can lay it out.

    Assembly sequence

    How to assemble a Eurobook sofa?
    After inspection and confidence in the suitability of the components of the sofa with the Eurobook mechanism, you can proceed to the main stages of installation. The process is labor-intensive and requires special care. Guaranteed quality furniture assembly can be provided by an independent craftsman for a fee. But, if you have temporary financial difficulties, or you are absolutely confident in your professionalism, then feel free to start the process.

    The first stage begins with the assembly of the lower part (base), which is considered the support. You should first screw on the legs and rotating wheels. When the base is ready, we proceed to the remaining parts.

    The second stage is the assembly of the armrests and the main part. The armrests are assembled sequentially and secured using self-tapping screws. Then we fix the finished elements to the base. Next, the frame is assembled and the seat is placed.

    The third stage is the final one. The back of the sofa is secured with bolts and nuts. Afterwards the seat and pillows are installed. The main seat is installed strictly at a right angle, while it is fixed to the sides.

    The article outlines the nuances that you need to pay attention to when assembling a sofa with the Eurobook mechanism yourself, as well as the correct sequence of actions.

    Self-assembly of a sofa
    This method is suitable for people who do not have skills in working with wood. This option is a little simpler and to implement it you need to stock up:

    • two used door leaves;
    • metal staples;
    • wood hemp;
    • foam;
    • upholstery material.

    Wooden version

    The base and back of this sofa model will be two used wooden door leaves. You will need to first clean them of old coatings and dirt, and then treat them with a grinding machine.

    Next, the doors are painted in the color of your choice, while trying to ensure that it matches the overall interior of the room in which the sofa will be installed in the future. You may prefer finishing the wooden surface with veneer.

    Using nails, fasten one sash to a wooden stump of the appropriate size, and then use metal staples and glue to secure the second part (the back) to it.

    After this, start making the mattress: cut out the foam rubber of the same size as the seat and cover it with thick fabric (matting is ideal for this). Already on top of this material a bright fabric of good quality will be stretched.

    The main requirement is the construction of the most durable and reliable frame foundation. It bears the entire main load, and if you neglect this requirement, you can get injured during operation, and it will not last long. Based on this, you can choose a different base material that meets the requirements.

    You can play with the finished design in any way you like, it all depends on your preferences and imagination.

    How to fold a Eurobook sofa: a detailed review of furniture

    The sofa is considered one of the central elements of the apartment. Yes, this type of furniture is designed for comfortable sitting in front of the TV or reading a book, but many use it as a full-fledged sleeping place. This is especially true in small apartments. There are many types of mechanisms that make it possible to turn an ordinary sofa into a double bed. The most common type is the Eurobook. This furniture has a number of features and different transformation methods. In this article we will talk about how to assemble a Eurobook sofa, plus we will add detailed transformation diagrams.

    What to look for?

    If you have purchased a new sofa and plan to assemble it yourself, then first carefully inspect all the mechanisms. If they show signs of corrosion, are loose and generally look used, then you have definitely been provided with defective products. There is no point in assembling such a product, otherwise you will soon have to think about how to properly disassemble it in order to change parts at your own expense.

    For example, the Reloti Silver sofa has become one of the most popular models today. Specialists always try to assemble it, because it requires precision in every connection. If you do not have any experience in assembling furniture, but really want to carry out this procedure yourself, then use the drawings offered by the manufacturer. They give a very cloudy view of the assembly, but still, if you understand them, you can get all the data on how to assemble correctly.

    Features of the Eurobook

    A sofa with a folding mechanism is used both for relaxation and for sleeping. Everything is simple here: the sofa has several parts - the front part and the back, which lowers in a couple of movements. Because of such a simple mechanism, such a sofa is in demand, especially in one-room apartments. Read more about the benefits.

    1. Space saving - the assembled sofa takes up little space. This type of furniture can also be placed close to the wall.
    2. Comfort - if you unfold such furniture, then two adults can fit on it and at the same time it will be comfortable.
    3. A simple mechanism - to unfold the Eurobook sofa, it will take a few minutes and a minimum of effort. Everything is simple and elementary.
    4. Additional compartment - this type of furniture has an additional compartment in which you can store both bed linen and clothes.
    5. A wide range of assortments - you can buy a Eurobook in any color, with or without armrests, with different types of filling.
    6. Long service life - due to the absence of complex parts, the mechanism of such a sofa will last for more than one year.

    Recommendations for working with materials

    1. Instead of fiberboard, it is quite possible to use 6 mm thick plywood. Then the cross-section of the bars can be smaller, 30x30.
    2. The bars can be glued to the plywood with glue and secured with 25-30 mm staples using a construction stapler.
    3. It is better to make the soft part of the sofa from foam rubber, the density of which is more than 30 kg/m2. Foam rubber with a thickness of 100 mm is suitable for the front part of the backrest, and 20 mm for the back part.
    4. The upholstery on the back can be done with a zipper or simply secured to the beam at the bottom using a stapler.

    Making a Eurobook sofa yourself may not be much cheaper than buying it in a store, but its convenience, quality and reliability will justify your patience and diligence.

    Transformation of the sofa

    Before laying out the Eurobook sofa, study our recommendations in order to avoid mistakes in the future. Let's start, perhaps, with the classic two-section version .

    1. Remove pillows and ottomans from the bed.
    2. Grab the center of the seat and pull it towards you. In some models it is necessary to slightly lift the lower part, and then pull it out. The mechanism is made of guides and regular rollers, and because of this, the lower part easily extends. Make sure that the sofa slides out smoothly, otherwise if you only pull it on the left side, you won’t succeed.
    3. Pull the bottom of the sofa until the casters rest against the stops.
    4. Now lower the headboard towards you. This part should fall perfectly evenly onto the additional compartment below.

    Done, this way you will have a sleeping place in a few minutes. The situation is similar with the corner Eurobook. More detailed instructions can be found in the photo.

    Three-section eurobook

    In addition to the standard double model, there is also a three-section model, which differs in only one additional section. When folded, the element is located under the seat, and when the sofa is unfolded, it will serve as an additional sleeping place. The result is a large and wide full bed. More details on how to do this:

    • remove the bedding and pillows from the sofa;
    • pull out the lower support and pull it towards you.

    When you unfold the lower segment, the third section will unfold automatically.

    Next, lower the backrest.

    Examples of do-it-yourself corner sofas

    An example of a do-it-yourself corner sofa would be a design with a side part that rises upward. It is convenient to store any things in it. If there are often guests in the house who stay overnight, then a sofa that turns into a bed with one easy movement of the hand is suitable. For this purpose, special retractable mechanisms are installed.

    Follow the instructions when assembling the sofa!

    It can be very difficult to select the necessary sofa model in a store, since most often they offer standard models. And the instructions for assembling a corner sofa yourself are simple and even a beginner can handle it. The main thing is to study it carefully and without haste, because the future design will always be in plain sight and flaws will definitely not decorate it. This way you can easily make a completely suitable model for the interior.

    Recommendations

    The Eurobook sofa is a universal piece of furniture that can perform its tasks for a long time and without interruption. But in order to achieve this, you need to take into account some recommendations. More details:

    • If the frame of the sofa is made of wood, then you should not install it near heating appliances. The minimum distance from the radiator is half a meter;
    • unfold the sofa carefully and without sudden movements, especially if the guides are made of wood, otherwise you may damage the retractable mechanism;
    • if the flooring is uneven, the sofa can be adjusted using the legs;
    • try to wash the sofa more often and vacuum the internal compartment for things;
    • pull out the sofa only in the center or use a special hinge.

    What do you need to have for assembly?

    Assembling a modern Eurobook sofa will not take much time if you prepare all the necessary tools in advance. It’s not a fact that you will need everything, but assembly schemes are different and therefore it is better to play it safe in advance and keep it on hand:

    • scotch;
    • construction stapler;
    • adjustable wrench or wrench;
    • screwdriver

    There are many different videos on the Internet, as well as assembly diagrams that help you see the process live. Also, we all know that upholstered furniture is quite massive, so it is better not to start the process of assembling the mechanism alone, since in this case the help of a partner is practically necessary.

    Why is self-assembly better?

    So you can order assembly and the problem will solve itself. Indeed, this is the simplest and physically least expensive option (you don’t have to cover yourself with drawings and diagrams, select the necessary screws, look for holes for fastenings under the upholstery - a master will do all this).

    There are at least two things to consider here:

    • first, they assemble sofas for free in isolated cases (not all stores can afford such a function or this is a very simple sofa model);
    • second, between delivery and the visit of the furniture assembler, it can take from one to several days (and while you wait, the sofa will take up space in your apartment disassembled).

    But don't be upset. You can assemble the sofa with your own hands. It is not difficult.
