How to paint a louvered door

(based on materials from the site https://www.ehow.com) When painting shuttered doors, you need to avoid 2 main mistakes: these are drops and smudges, since there is a lot of splashes due to the slats; due to the thick layer of paint, the air spaces between the slats are blocked, which means the louvered doors lose their purpose. So let's get to the process. 1. Using masking paper, protect the floor and walls from drops and splashes. If you don't want to paint all the parts of the shutter door, use masking tape to hide them. 2. Using a flat 3-inch (7.5 cm) paint brush, coat the horizontal slats with latex primer first. Hold the brush horizontally. Apply the primer (and then the paint) in a very thin layer so as not to block the ventilation holes. After you have coated the grille, you can coat the remaining parts of the door with primer. 3. Using a dry, flat 2-inch (5 cm) paint brush, quickly, before the primer has dried, remove excess primer, or, conversely, fill in untreated areas. 4. Allow the primer to dry thoroughly. 5. Clean both brushes and apply paint in the same order. Allow the paint to dry, then apply a second coat of paint if necessary. Let it dry.

And here are the doors the user Chernichkin
has: “These are the doors I hung in one of my closets. They were purchased, sanded, covered with stain and varnish.”

Painting wooden doors

A door made of wood can be painted with different compositions, but you need to decide on the solid material; perhaps you need to preserve the structure of the wood or, on the contrary, hide the pattern, make artificial wood fiber on the door leaf. Wood surface paint can be used:

  1. Opaque.
  2. Acrylic.
  3. Polyurethane.
  4. Alkyd.
  5. Oily.
  6. Water based.

Painted wooden doors
You can also use other compositions in the form of varnish or stain. Experts advise:

  1. For the canvas, use a water-based acrylic composition. You can use a brush to work; they cover the surface well.
  2. Alkyd compounds dry quickly, have no odor, repel water well and are not subject to heat. Recommended for use in baths and saunas. Suitable for front and interior doors. Painting is carried out with a brush or using a spray gun.

Alkyd-based enamel should only be applied to a dry surface. If wood or steel material is wet, the enamel will peel and peel off. Painting is carried out in several steps, usually using two types of paints. Initially, impregnation is applied to give a certain color, then the enamel itself is applied.

Application area

The scope of use of louvered doors is determined by their properties. They are indispensable in rooms that require constant ventilation. At the same time, the degree of sound insulation should not be important for these rooms. There are several such rooms in our houses and apartments:

  • Technical rooms - storage rooms, laundries, wardrobes. In the case of dressing rooms, it is worth thinking about the feasibility of this option. After all, it is advisable to protect clothes from dust. A compromise is possible: make a louvered grille in the upper part, where there is less dust and the warmest air accumulates.
  • Bathroom. In the bathroom, it is desirable to quickly remove excess moisture and louvered doors will help with this. But this option is only good if the bathroom is separate, since a combined bathroom will become a source of not very pleasant sounds and smells.

Louvered doors to technical rooms are an excellent option to achieve ventilation without organizing a special air duct

In addition to serving as doors between rooms, louvered structures can be used in furniture. They are good:

  • In kitchen cabinets, both floor and wall mounted. In the dryer and the cupboard with cereals they provide quick ventilation, in the rest - more like decorative ones.
  • In cabinets that cover the pipes in the toilet as an enclosing structure. You can hang them on hinges, or you can put them on magnets.

In bathrooms, toilets, kitchen cabinets can be used as cabinet doors

Another area of application is as shading structures with a large glazing area. On terraces, winter gardens, large balconies and loggias with continuous glazing. Why are louvered doors better than regular blinds? The fact that “fixed doors can be opened while leaving shutter doors closed. There will be free air access and there will be no too bright light.

Louvre doors can be used as shading

As a partition that delimits a room. For example, fencing off the sleeping area in a studio apartment. This option is ideal if there is no window in the fenced off area. Such a partition will provide air access, let in sufficient light and create privacy.

A partition made of blinds to separate the sleeping area

In principle, louvered grilles can be used for other purposes than their intended purpose - as a notice board, a screen, covering or separating something.

How to paint a wooden door correctly?

In order to properly paint any material, veneer, MDF, metal or wood, you need to remove them from the hinges of the door frame. Next, the material is placed on a table or bench and it is better to carry out the work outside so that the dyes do not smell indoors, and drying will be faster. The dismantled canvas is installed so that there is access to any place. You can paint the door handle or remove all the fittings, including the handle.

How to paint a wooden door

If the material cannot be dismantled, all elements must be covered with film to prevent dye from getting on them. You can use paper or tape. If there is glass, it is better to remove it or simply paste it over; you also need to close the casing. Often there is dermantine on the front door; in general, the door trim can be painted, or you can simply remove it and replace it with new material.

What to look for when choosing

When choosing shutter doors in a store, you need to pay attention, first, to the quality of the wood. There should be no knots at all, or there should be few of them. They should be dense, brown in color (not black and without cracks).

The second point is geometry. The entire door leaf should lie in the same plane. This is the first thing - no longitudinal bends or “twisting” of the elements and the entire door as a whole. Next, you need to check the length/width/thickness. They must match to within a millimeter.

You need to choose shutter doors carefully

And the last thing is the quality of wood processing. Wooden louvered doors are sold unpainted. You will have to do the painting yourself. But the wood must be well processed. It is desirable that there are no roughness, unevenness and other defects that will then have to be eliminated with your own hands.

Surface preparation

Before painting, the canvas must be prepared, the material is cleaned, if the material is iron, then the rusty coating is removed, then a layer of primer or anti-rust agent is applied. Veneered material requires additional processing, removing unevenness with putty. The preparatory process looks like this:

Old paint, putty and other materials are removed. For DIY work, use medium-grit sandpaper or a grinder. The swollen paint is removed with a hair dryer and spatula.
Using washes:You can clean the surface faster, but more expensive. It is often used if a three-layer layer is applied to the material. You buy a special remover, apply it to wood or other material, and after a while the paint peels off the surface on its own.
Grinding:This stage consists of removing irregularities, defects and other flaws. This step is necessary if the material simply needs to be updated.
Primer and putty:Next, the canvas should be coated with a primer, wood or metal putty. The mixtures need to cover all the cracks, even where there is a decorative element, and saturate the material where the jamb is.
Re-sanding:When the putty dries, you need to sand the canvas again. Initially, medium grain is used, and then fine grain.

There are several important tips on how to process the material:

  1. Large dents can be repaired with car putty, preferably fiberglass-based.
  2. If the material on the door is old and has become dark over time, then it is recommended to simply lighten the paint using bleach and water in a ratio of 1:3. When sanding is finished, the dust must be removed and the canvas wiped with a damp sponge.

In general, surface preparation is suitable for any type of door; this method is universal, but if the door is iron, then rust is additionally removed. After preparation, the coloring technology begins.

Possible finishing methods

Wooden louvered doors can be decorated in almost a dozen different ways. There are traditional ones and not so traditional ones. You can do the following:

  • Cover with stain. The effect and appearance are known to everyone.
  • Soak in wood oil. It is usually sold with color, but there are also wooden products that preserve the natural color. These compositions have antiseptic properties, and some can be used in baths and swimming pools. As a result of this treatment, the grain of the wood appears more clearly, and water is not absorbed into it. There may even be puddles. At the same time, there is no film on the surface; it is absolutely “natural” in appearance and touch.

Paint, varnish, wood oil - the most popular finishing options

These are all the ways to finish wooden lattice doors. In any case, it is worth remembering that before finishing it is necessary to fill all uneven areas with wood putty and let them dry. Afterwards, smooth out all the unevenness with sandpaper. And those that remained after putty, and those that were allowed during the production process. After this, we cover all the planks and frame with wood primer. The type of primer is selected for finishing. After drying, you can carry out finishing work - paint, varnish, etc.

Staining order

The coloring option can be different, for example, you can make the canvas look old yourself by artificially aging it, as shown in the view. Some use a textured painting option to match the door to the desired style. The painting method can be used. All this can be done, but the downside is the difficulty of doing the work yourself. Therefore, below will be the usual painting option.

Preparing doors for painting

The work must be carried out efficiently so that there are no smudges or stains on the surface, otherwise restoration of the material will be required. For work, use a roller or brush, but even better is a professional spray gun. Of course, if you need to paint 1-2 canvases, then it is better not to waste money and use a regular roller or paneled brush. When using a brush, it is recommended to fluff them up, and it is better to remove all hairs that are poorly fixed so that they do not remain on the door. The coloring of the door leaf will depend on certain features.

For example, panel doors and painting a louvered door are carried out in three steps. A roller is used for work. Its advantage is that there is no lint left behind, like with a brush, and the paint applies evenly. The surface must be degreased and the dye must first be applied to the end. From the left side of the end at the top you need to move to the right. When the blind material is painted, you need to leave the canvas to dry, and the amount of time it takes for the paint to dry is indicated in the instructions.

Painting a wooden door with a brush

The next step is to color the longitudinal lines. When the side dries, you can move on to the third part. The last step will be to process not the entire area, but individual parts of the blinds, where there are recesses and fittings. Painting the door this way will allow you to obtain optimal paint density, which will protect the door itself from damage.

Features, advantages and disadvantages

The properties of louvered doors are determined by their design - the presence of transverse slats. They have the following advantages:

  • Good ventilation. Louvre doors offer little obstruction to air movement, so there are no problems with high humidity or stale air. Even in closed, rarely used rooms.
  • Better heat distribution. It is difficult to ensure normal air conditions in unheated rooms with ordinary doors. The presence of blinds solves this problem. In storage rooms and technical rooms separated by louvered doors, the temperature is automatically equalized.

Louvered doors create almost no barriers to air movement

Doors with a large number of slats and gaps between them are more technologically complex. Their production requires attention, precision, and accuracy. Only under such conditions will the result be good - it will be pleasant to use and look at. This is why louvered doors are much more expensive than regular doors. And this despite the fact that only the frame is made from solid wood. Partitions-lamellas are made of laminated wood. This is due to the fact that thin wooden planks will “twist” when humidity changes. The presence of several layers with multidirectional fibers interspersed with layers of glue allows us to solve the problem.

Other disadvantages:

  • Lack of sound insulation. The presence of a large number of gaps between the slats negates all soundproofing characteristics. In this regard, it doesn’t matter whether these doors exist or not.
  • Free movement of dust. One area where roller doors can be used is in wardrobes. But the clothes placed in them are in no way protected from dust, which is more than enough in our homes.

When using blinds on cabinet doors, dust easily penetrates inside

The disadvantages of louvered doors are quite serious. Before installation, you should think seriously and decide what is more important to you: their advantages or disadvantages.

Painting doors with stain

In some cases, stain is used. It is applied to a clean canvas, after slightly wetting the wood. The stain applies better to a damp door; the finishing is carried out initially along the grain of the wood, after which it is painted across. The last layer is laid in the direction of the fibers. The doorway itself, the trim, the jamb and other parts do not need to be removed; they are opened with stain in place, applying the stain from the bottom up.

Painting a door with stain

When the stain dries, the wood is sanded, because the fibers will rise. For grinding, special equipment or sandpaper is used. Then the dust is removed and the final layer of stain is applied, which will highlight the wood grain and change the shade of the door.

When using alcohol stains, the color can be changed, but a repeated sanding process is not necessary, because such a composition does not lift the fibers. Aqueous formulations have an undoubted advantage: they do not smell and also do not have toxins. Before the door dries, it will be darker; after complete drying, the desired shade will be obtained.

What are the features of slatted doors for mezzanines in Leroy Merlin

The lattice door design is perfect for equipping home shelves and mezzanines with it. Often it is the permeability factor that is decisive, because in such places things or products are often stored that do not accept an airtight space. For example, a dressing room or a shelf for dishes in the kitchen, where permeability for moisture evaporation through open slats is desired.

Advantages and disadvantages of slatted doors for mezzanines:

  • Save space;
  • Installation does not require much effort or knowledge, and the weight of the structures often allows the use of cheap materials and hinges;
  • If handled properly, they have a long service life;
  • Quite a difficult DIY repair in case of breakdown;
  • In the long term, maintenance is difficult, because to clean the slatted holes you will have to resort to special devices for collecting dust or dodge with a cloth.

It is also very difficult to carry out any work with this structure, because even the slightest intervention may require its complete disassembly. Therefore, especially painted models can cost quite a lot of money. In the Leroy Merlin service catalog you can find a variety of door models. This may also include a stacked structure from Ikea or Obi, which includes separate doors, a riser, and fasteners.

Artificial creation of door fiber

Not all people have wooden doors at home, so a design move is used, namely the artificial creation of door fiber on almost any surface:

  1. Fiberboard.
  2. Plywood.
  3. Chipboard.
  4. Metal.
  5. MDF.
  6. PVC.
  7. Plastic.
  8. Eco-veneer
  9. Other.

Painting MDF doors
Painting MDF doors with your own hands can be done according to the standard principle, locally or partially, or you can use the method of creating wood fibers. The process will be like this:

  1. Gray, white and other light colors are applied to the surface of the door.
  2. When the surface is dry, apply liquid soap to the doors.
  3. Next, dark paint is applied and the soap is washed off.

This combination will allow you to achieve the look of real wood on any surface. There is another unusual option for painting wood:

  1. A comb-brush is used, which is carried along the veneer fibers.
  2. This gives the material a wood structure.
  3. Then matte material or gloss paint is applied in several layers.
  4. The surface is polished.

Advice! Everyone must choose the method themselves, for their own apartment or room. If the material is external, then a composition for external use is used. Entrance doors are even painted from a bottle containing hammer paint. Patination can be used, but the patina itself is difficult to apply and requires a special tool. Powder coating of doors is often used, but the powder composition requires equipment, although the method is good and modern.

The powder adheres perfectly to the surface and makes the home warm. At the end, the canvas is installed, the slope is lined, you can use plastic materials for finishing, glue wallpaper if the width allows you to hang pictures with a marine or other theme. It is better to paint while the renovation is underway, so that the passage structure is in one color or in one design; the front door looks good in gilding, a color called wenga.

Opening with varnish

It is better to paint wooden doors, trims, trims and other elements with varnish. The varnished material will be reliably protected from damage and other factors. The varnish can be polished when you need to create the desired pattern or make the canvas look antique. You can use varnish to open up oak and this idea will best highlight the wood.

In order to understand the choice of painting and methods, it is better to look at photos from catalogs of design magazines and choose the right idea. It is recommended to buy paints and varnishes in accordance with GOST. Painting rules are presented in the video:

As you can see, the size range of louvered doors is quite large

Dimensions

Supermarkets like OBI and Leroy Marlene usually have pine louvered doors in stock. They are usually presented in one or two lines in different sizes. Most often the parameters are as follows:

  • width - 294 mm, 394 mm, 494 mm, 594 mm;
  • height - 606 mm, 720 mm, 993 mm, 1100 mm, 1700 mm, 2013 mm, 2422 mm.

There is a certain set of standard sizes

These standard sizes can be adjusted a little - trim a couple of centimeters in height and width. If you need a completely non-standard option, there are companies or private owners who will make doors to order - according to your dimensions.

Painted louvered doors

If necessary, we can paint the louvered doors in the color you need, which you can choose from the RAL palette.

Painting time : 5-10 days.

Cost of painting : 3,000 rub. per sq./m.

Where does this price come from for painting? It's all about the complexity of the process:

  1. the door is sanded;
  2. paint is applied;
  3. the door is sanded again, since after painting the pine, lint “gets up” on it, which needs to be removed;
  4. After this, repainting is done.

As you can see, the painting process requires many specialist man-hours, especially considering that each lamella (slat) of the door must be painted and sanded by hand.

Color without interruption

Now that you are ready to start painting, do everything at once without taking a break. If you stop within a coat for even a few minutes, the paint may dry unevenly and cause blemishes. Latex paints can dry and be ready for a second coat in about four hours. Oil paints must dry for 24 hours before applying a second coat. After the first coat has dried, professionals often recommend sanding again using 320-grit sandpaper. Remove any remaining paint dust with a clean cloth and apply a second coat.

Louvered doors for closets (straw doors)

Louvered doors for closets (straw doors)

Grandma decided to renovate her apartment. No matter how much I persuade her to buy a wardrobe with mirrors, she won’t mind, she wants foam blocks and doors for them. And the doors are not simple, I kept remembering what they are called, she says, “Well, they are like straws, with a hole, a stripe.” I immediately realized that she was talking about louvered doors.

They started looking. Of course, I don't like it at all. Two hours were spent arguing. As a result, a louvered door costs 1,500 rubles. in Leroy I won a mirror or sandblasting from a wardrobe for 20,000 rubles.

We started going through the options - I’ll post them here, maybe it will be useful to someone. I'm placing louvered doors for the closet.

As it turns out, if you buy Merlin at Leroy, they are unpainted and undried. They advise you to buy it, lay it horizontally, let it dry for a month (!), so you can sand it and paint it, you can use a brush, but some people paint it on the street with a spray can.

First, I will place a louvered door from Leroy Merlin -

Well, and other examples, of which there are not many.

The nicest one I've ever seen

If anyone has a really decent version of how it looks in their apartment, please take a photo, I’ll be very glad!

I also haven’t figured out yet how and what they are attached to. More precisely, fasteners - it’s clear, there are a lot of them, but whether platbands are sold specifically for them or I don’t know what is needed there is a question.

And I completely forgot to bring up lighting as an argument. The room turns out to be voluminous - the wall is 3.4 meters long and the depth of the dressing room is 1 meter. All this should probably be illuminated somehow? True, there is an outlet there, probably it will be necessary to run a cord and a light bulb from it to the top? Of course, it will look very poor, but we do the repairs without wiring.

The order is placed on the condition of prepayment and the delivery time for the standard size is 3-4 weeks, and non-standard - 6-8 weeks (minimum size (H*W) 250*210mm, and maximum (H*W) 2500*700mm)

Door Description:

In the production of louvered doors, coniferous timber of class “AA” is used, on which knots, resin pockets, blue stains and other defects are not allowed. The lamella is made of MDF

Blade thickness: 21mm

A unique feature of the production is the production of the side strip (stand) using the bar splicing method, which prevents longitudinal deformation of louvered doors with a height of 1700 mm to 2500 mm. It is these features that make further work with our product easier and ensure its long-term operation.

The side strip (riser) is made using the fusion method, preventing longitudinal deformation. The transverse strips are attached to the side strips using dowels. Width 41mm

The bottom crossbar has a standard width of 70 mm and serves as a guide for installation. The width of other cross bars is in the range of 60-80 mm and depends on the height of the door and the number of slats.

MDF lamella is 5 mm thick, 31 mm wide and is placed in the grooves of the side strip, stationary at a depth of 10 mm at each end. The slats are located at a distance of 28 mm and at an angle of 70 degrees - which allows air to circulate freely

Intermediate crossbar - for louvered doors with a height of 1500mm or more they have one crossbar, if the height is more than 2500mm then two.

An important role is played by the fact that, despite their high quality and environmental friendliness, louvered doors have a fairly low price.
